I had no idea that there were leper institutes and people suffering from this disease were forced to live there. This read follows Mirielle West, wife of a famous movie star, who discovers she has leprosy. She is forced to leave her family and reside in a place in Louisiana. As you can assume, it is a bit of a culture shock for the rich wife used to having everything at her disposal. You meet many characters on her journey that you can't help but fall in love with. Mirielle's struggle with who she used to be and who she is now is heartbreaking and inspirational. Recommend!...more

A book has to grab me fast to make me hang in there. So I struggled for a few chapters because it was all about fishing. I mean, it is The Fisherman. Is a giant fish going to jump out of the river and eat people? Zombie fishes? Then the story unfolded and off we went all the way to the end, holding my breath. It makes the question of what would you do if you could get your loved back from the dead? Could you sacrifice your life? Become something not human? Would it be worth it?
Excellent plot (besides the fishing) heart pounding moments. However, not one zombie fish! Highly recommend....more

Georgia Tann has been called the "Mother of Adoption" however she was a child thief and murderer that has caused generational tragedy. In this book, we follow Rill and her siblings as they are ripped from their parents by fraud, suffered abuse in a children's home before being adopted. It is a heartbreaking story. I read the nonfiction account of Tann, her crimes, and the fallout the victims feel to this day. Babies were left outside in the blazing sun for hours in order to get rid of them. I hope there is a basement in hell and Tann is there. Excellent read. ...more

South China Sea, the steam frigate HMS Charger pursues a fleet of pirates that have been terrorizing the waters surrounding Hong Kong. In their hull are crates of opium, which are transferred as spoils of war. Suddenly a dark mass appears way above the stars. It looks like a comet, but maybe a dark star. Days later, the crew are experiencing hallucinations and calling them to come to an island for all their dreams to come true. Murders and mutiny on the high sea, with a boatload of horror to keep the pages turning. This was one hell of a good book. Recommend!...more

So needlessI love historical fiction, but I usually stay away from this time period. I end up crying all the way through it and mad at the ignorance. So needless to say, yes, I cried over these pages. A mother's love is endless. It will go through the depths of hell to provide safety for our children. For even a sliver of hope for it. Pheby did what she had to survive. To make sure her children survived. I can't wrap my mind around on how it would be in her position. I wouldn't disrespect her by pretending too. The real question is why these women dealt with them. I was not disappointed with his death. He needed more bullets. I love the bonds of friendship and family these women had. The struggles of being a lesbian, Jordan went through, were sad. The shame and the hiding because in those times it was considered deviant behavior. A wonderful read....more

This is a parallel timeline of Caroline Parcewell present day and Nella who sells poisons from her apothecary shop many moons ago. Honestly, I would have preferred to have this book be all about Nella and her tasty, deadly poisons. All Caroline did was cry over her cheating husband. Like girl, we get it. Channel your inner Nella and serve that husband a poisoned meal with a smile on your face. If you can get past the pity party, it was an okay read....more

On this journey back in time, we are told the story of Titanic from revolving viewpoints. From a first class passenger on down to a member of the crew, we are a witness to the courageous acts and the fear that grips the dying. I love that the stories didn't stop there. The ones that survive that horrifying night, their stories carry on. We stay with our survivors all the way to the end. It was a beautiful, sometimes heartbreaking read. Bring your tissues!...more

Also, this marks the time Henry VII finally kicks the bucket and probably ends up in hell. Which of course brings Henry VIII to the throne. Henry becomes a one-man wrecking ball, destroys his own country and beheads a few wives. The curse lives on. No male child survives yet to become an heir. Poor Margaret has spent the last few books in utter ruin, I was happy to see her prosper. Then Henry of course just like his raggedy father becomes a tyrant that ends with Margaret's head on the block. Sis couldn't catch a break. Excellent read....more

In the 1860s, Annie is young, alone and not a dollar to her name. Few options being available, she resorts to prostitution in a boardinghouse. She goes by the name of Bessie and soon becomes high in demand among the gentlemen callers. Bessie has expensive clothes, accessories, and diamond rings. What she really wants is a proper husband to change her life to reputable. She thinks she has found that in Abe. Bessie soon finds out Abe is a cad who ends up murdering her. Bessie's ghost remains, fueled by revenge and the desire to see her husband hang at the end of a noose.
This was a good ghost story. Bessie's life short as it was full of heartache. Recommend for the lovers of a ghost tale with no horror involved....more

It was interesting to see how Madeleine Force captured the heart of John Jacob “Jack” Astor. How society snubbed her because her family didn't come from money, and she was the "second" wife. The Titanic part brought tears to my eyes because I knew how it was going to end. So many good people died while cowards were overtaking the boats. Astor's son was heartbroken. Never truly accepting his father died at sea. Tissues all around. An excellent read!...more

They are to be the next King and Queen of England. Alas, Arthur dies five months into the marriage, leaving Katherine adrift in the English court. Unable to return home but now a widow, she has to find a way to marry second son Henry, who will now be King.
This was a rough read. I didn't care for the format at all. The story didn't flow as easily as it did in the previous books. At least I didn't have to deal with King Henry being an ass too much in this book. Though, the fact, he wanted to marry his widowed daughter-in-law was gross. So now we are on to King Henry the VIII and his many wives....more

King Edward 1483, Westminster Princess Cecily York, daughter of the dead King Edmund York, has to learn how to survive as her rivals take the throne. King Edward Tudor VII marries her sister Elizabeth York to combine the two houses. Sister to the Queen of England, surrounded by enemies, she has to learn to keep her distaste in check. I really enjoyed seeing things from Cecily's point of view. You have to wonder how it was being the sister to the Queen and was going to be used as a spare if the Queen was barren. Cecily led an interesting but dishearten life. Recommend!...more

I enjoyed the Princess Charlotte diary entries. The Princess Diana parts were horrible. More than once the phrase, "thick as two planks of wood" were used. Inferring Princess Diana was not smart really made me mad. Then the constant implication that Princess Diana was some shrinking violet that spent most of her time purging was disgusting. This author tried to make Diana look vapid. If I could, I would demand a refund for the money I spent on this book.
