Catherine Sorgeiul is an orphan secluded in her uncle's home. Lonely, she becomes obsessed with the Man of Crows, a serial killer haunting the streets, killing women. We are introduced to a host of different women. The upper class daughter who is a sociopath. The victims as they are hunted down. The maid in love with her former employee seeking revenge. The "fairies" the weird dude next paints nude. As Catherine gets closer to revealing the killer, she confronts her dark past and the evil inside her.
This is a gritty, dark look into the lives of women in the 1840s. It also shows how times have changed for us women, but how much remains the same when it comes to the opposite sex. I had to go with a 3 rating because the ending left too many unanswered questions. We know what happens to Catherine, but everyone else's story remains a mystery!...more

On the heels of two miscarriages and a suicide attempt, Heather is barely holding on to life. Upon moving in, Alan finds out about a "healing lake" located deep in the woods behind his house. His neighbor warns him that the lake doesn't always heal. It can cause insanity and destruction. Well, you already, know Alan pays little mind to the warning and proceeds to go skinny-dipping. He starts to bring water back for his wife to heal her mental health. Things go good for a hot minute, then Heather finds out she is pregnant again. As Alan descends into madness, the lake waits patiently for its revenge.
Whew that was a wild crazy ride. That is how a horror story is written. I was absolutely terrified for the wife, Heather. The house was creepy as hell. Throw in some determined buzzards, and now we have a party. The ending is tragic, but damn, what a ride to get there!...more

Soon Why did it take me so long to read this wonderful book? It has history, mystery, horror, suspense, creepy cutout dolls, and a silent evil child. Soon as the companions entered the story, I was beyond scared. Why? I hate dolls. I hate anything that resembles dolls. Those weird staring eyes and painted faces. Just no. My oldest daughter terrorized me with her model wooden doll as a teenager until it mysterious caught on fire.
Did I know what was going to happen at the end? Yep, I pretty much guessed it. However, I didn't care. I was so involved in the story and these characters, I wanted more. Poor Anne created a monster that cursed her own family, didn't she? Highly recommend. Seriously go now!...more

Especially when the mention of the Salem Witch Trials has something loosely do with the background story. It is told in two timelines, Margaret a witch in the 1800s and her descendant Augusta in the present day.
Margaret Harlowe, the only daughter from a well off family, has always been different. Different from her family and the townspeople. She has the power of witchcraft and uses it to help women in secret. She falls in love with a pretty boy with pretty words who breaks her heart. So what do you do when your heart is broken and the need for revenge takes you over? Apparently, you spend 150 years waiting around for your blood relative, so you can steal their soul.
Augusta in the present day has settled for a "safe" life. She is never one to make a fuss and just goes with the flow. Until she gets a new job at the historical Harlowe House. Strange things began happening to her. She is haunted by a spirit named Margaret and her story. Little does she know, Maraget as a plan for her descendant.
It is a story of love, betrayal, obsession and revenge. Definitely a great witching book. Recommend reading within a salt circle....more

Life is bliss. Or those are things that Laura believes. Truth is, Laura doesn't wish to save anyone. She wants them to die, hopefully with her on the phone. Ryan's pregnant wife is one of those people that Laura helps usher to the other side. He is mad and wants revenge. It turns into a mouse and cat game with no winners. Just death and the truth about Laura's existence.
What did I just read? I am dumbstruck with the character Laura. The audacity she had and how deluded she is. Mars, wrote the heck out of one psychotic woman, that is for sure. Recommend. You might need therapy afterwards....more

The scriptures are the rules to live by. Immanuelle Moore was born into this world after her mother died giving birth to her after running off into the Darkwoods. Her father being burnt on the pyre for his sins, she is left to the mercy of her family. All her life she has been told to stay out of the Darkwood, the forest surrounding the city, where evil and the souls of the witches live. Years later, Immanuelle is lured into the woods, starting a bloody chain of plaques onto the land. She has to find a way to stop the plaques and the prophet before it is too late.
I hated the ending of this book. That is why it only got four stars. Immanuelle is better than I. I would have left all their butts to die. I am petty like that. I might have saved my man depending on how I felt about that day....more

A few weeks after arriving, Christopher enters the woods and disappears for six days. Then he is found dirty, wandering the streets with no knowledge of what happened to him, except that "the nice man" saved him. Upon his return, the nice man who only Christopher can hear insists that he builds a treehouse in the woods before Christmas. So he enlists his friends to build the treehouse of all treehouse. Unfortunately, the treehouse is a portal to another place that will bring hell on Earth.
That is the basic rundown. The plot is way more complicated than that. It is hard to explain it all in one review post since there is so much going on. My only complaint is that it is so long. Did we really need over 700 pages, Chbosky? Regardless, this book is flipping awesome. If I am wrong, God let me hit a deer....more

However, is it really fair to slap a label on him because technically the victims were not victims nor human. Any way you slice it, Dread’s Hand, Alaska is a place to avoid. The locals are unfriendly, the one-room hotel owner's father is stabby, and there is something inhuman stalking people in the snow.

There has been speculation over the years if she was the first victim of Ted Bundy, who would have been 14 at the time. Bundy remained defiant until the end. Never fully claiming all his victims and spinning lies all the way to the electric chair.
Going by what is known about serial killers, I don't think she was killed by Bundy. He was still in the peeping in windows and killing animals stages. Once they work up to murder, that is what drives them from that point. I don't see him going back to just peeping for years until he kicks off his serial killing spree.
Ann's case is still open, even though half the case file is now missing. Her parents died never knowing what happened to their little girl....more
