I love the characters and the scenic backdrop but my lord how long can you discuss people on vacation at the beach with a creepy house next door. I started getting bored around 40%.
Pros - Creepy house of sand. Relatable characters. I finished it.
Cons - Nothing really happens until the end of the book. Bunch of filler content that is tedious. ...more

What I thought witchy historical fiction turned into something else completely. What sorcery is this? No matter, I still enjoyed this tale immensely. Usually I would be mad at the sudden turn of events, but I was willing to go where the author took me. I was so caught up in the story, I had to know how it ended for my new character friends. Excellent read! Recommend....more

Dear Ms. Anne Heltel,
I would like to bring to your attention the book you have written will have me having nightmares at least for a week. Was it necessary to include dolls with AI intelligence? Dolls are already creepy, but you had to turn it up a few notches. Then to throw in a Motherhood cult is well played, ma'am. Enclosed you will find my cash app tag in which I demand payment for the upcoming therapy I will now need.

On a lovely evening, 2 teens decide to break into a lab to free the animals. Awesome right? Unfortunately, they released the animals with a new strain of rabies that can be transmitted to humans. Lyssa, Greek word for rabies, is now loose in a small town and the race for a cure is on. One scratch, bite, or sexual relations can make you infected. As the residents are dying off in rapid numbers, will it stay contained in the city limits?
I found this book interesting because of the rabies angle. While it is pretty good, it is slow moving in some parts. I felt the ending was lacking and rushed. Overall, a good read....more

McCammon came damn close to how I imagine nuclear winter would be like. The story is terrifying, but beautiful. The characters were well written. I could place myself inside the lines with them. This book will leave an impression on your soul. Highly recommend!...more

I know there is supposed to be some hidden message about women learning to use their voice and speak up for themselves. However, when you list your book in the horror genre, I expect horror. Yes, there were some descriptions of how the girls were killed, but that is not enough to throw your book in the horror arena. The relationship between the mother and daughter was horrible. Nothing was resolved in the end. Overall disappointment for me.

Well, that was terrifying. Wallace created one eerie atmosphere. I had no idea what was going to happen next. I loved the two main characters and was holding my breath hoping they would survive. Wonderfully written. Recommend!...more

On the heels of two miscarriages and a suicide attempt, Heather is barely holding on to life. Upon moving in, Alan finds out about a "healing lake" located deep in the woods behind his house. His neighbor warns him that the lake doesn't always heal. It can cause insanity and destruction. Well, you already, know Alan pays little mind to the warning and proceeds to go skinny-dipping. He starts to bring water back for his wife to heal her mental health. Things go good for a hot minute, then Heather finds out she is pregnant again. As Alan descends into madness, the lake waits patiently for its revenge.
Whew that was a wild crazy ride. That is how a horror story is written. I was absolutely terrified for the wife, Heather. The house was creepy as hell. Throw in some determined buzzards, and now we have a party. The ending is tragic, but damn, what a ride to get there!...more

Soon Why did it take me so long to read this wonderful book? It has history, mystery, horror, suspense, creepy cutout dolls, and a silent evil child. Soon as the companions entered the story, I was beyond scared. Why? I hate dolls. I hate anything that resembles dolls. Those weird staring eyes and painted faces. Just no. My oldest daughter terrorized me with her model wooden doll as a teenager until it mysterious caught on fire.
Did I know what was going to happen at the end? Yep, I pretty much guessed it. However, I didn't care. I was so involved in the story and these characters, I wanted more. Poor Anne created a monster that cursed her own family, didn't she? Highly recommend. Seriously go now!...more

Thirty years later all six children now adults are back in town. With the rise of the moon full, the unholy pastor has risen and hellbent on revenge.
This was one horror filled ride from beginning to the end. It is told from different points of view as so much is going on around the town. Especially when Masters arrives on the scene. Recommend!...more

The story is told from two different timelines. One when Stella was a child left by her father at her mother's grandmother door. The second is Stella as a bootlegging adult. I was invested in the Birch women and their history, which all rotated around this mysterious God of the Mountain. Which could have been a weird religion or an actual thing.
