5 Stars!
I originally gave this book 4 stars for some strange reason. What on earth was I thinking?!?! This is a 5 star book without question. I have read it 3 times and plan to read many more time during my life. It really is that good. This book gives up the moment that we have all been waiting for - you know what I am talking about. Let me just say Chapters 4 and 5 - most fans know exactly what happens in those 2 chapters. I know I will always think of this book whenever I hear Chumbawamba's "Tubthumping" because that is simply put the best scene in a book EVER.

Once again, there is a lot going on in this book. Mac has been through a kind of hell that most people don't come back from. Mac comes back even stronger than she was before. The world is more of mess than it was in previous books and Mac is determined to work to change things. As I was reading the book this time, I did think that maybe Mac doesn't appreciate everything Barrons has done for her. Of course that might be due to the fact that I LOVE Barrons but seriously he keeps saving her and she seems to get mad because of it.
Strength wasn't about being able to do everything alone. Strength was know when to ask for help and not being to proud to do it.
In this book, we get to spend more time with characters we have spent time with in previous books: Dani, V'lane, Rowena, and really just about everyone else. The reasons why I hate Rowena are quite obvious during this book. She really is worse than many of the monsters in my opinion. This book brings us to a couple of new locations as well. We get to go into Ryodan's club which is quite the experience to say the least. Mac even spends some time in fairy.

Once again, I believe that everybody should read these books and they should probably be read more than once but what do I know I am a bit obsessive about it myself. This book does end in a cliffhanger so I do recommend having the whole series lined up once you start the first book. I waited to read this book and I had to wait a whole year to find out what happens with this cliffhanger. This book ended up being worth the wait and I can't wait to see where else Karen Marie Moning takes us. ...more

When I saw that some of my friends on Goodreads were getting a buddy read of this book organized, I jumped at the chance to join. I don't really know why I love this book so much. It actually has a few problems and I see them but I just don't care. I love this book anyway despite all of its flaws. This was actually the 4th time that I have read this book. Any book that I can enjoy after reading 4 times deserves 5 stars in my opinion.
I first started reading these books before the HBO series was produced. When I first saw the show, I remember thinking that many of the actors seemed wrong for the characters that I had created in my mind. I found it amusing on this re-read of the book all I could think about were the television characters. I would like to warn anyone that decides to read these books because they like the television series that they are really two very different things. The first season of the show does follow this book pretty well but after that they really are two different stories that just happen to share the same characters.

As I mentioned earlier, I did see some problems with this book. The writing isn't spectacular by any stretch. The writing seems overly simple to me. I really wished that the book focused on the exciting things going on in Sookie's life not on everyday things like cleaning. I sometimes feel like a total pig as I look around my messy house and read about Sookie cleaning hers. I really don't want to hear about cleaning. I really didn't feel a whole lot of chemistry going on between Bill and Sookie either. When they started saying that they loved each other, I thought it was a bit sudden and to be honest I just didn't see it myself. This book also seemed a bit dated to me. When Sookie is getting ready for Bill to come over, she puts her hair up in a banana clip. I remember wearing a banana clip in my hair during the late 80's and very early 90's but I don't think anyone was wearing them in 2001.
Despite these problems, I still can find so much to love inside of this book. I fell in love with characters a long time ago and I understand that this re-read of the book was probably heavily influence by that. I really like Sookie. I like that she thinks of her telepathy as a disability instead of the superpower most people would consider it to be. As you read the book, you realize how horrible it really would be to be able to read other people's minds. Sookie goes through a lot in this book and I really thought she handled most things quite well. She does require saving from time to time but she isn't afraid to jump into dangerous situations either.

I thought that the scenes with Eric were wonderful in this book. I am very partial to Eric. I can't help it and I really don't want to. Sam was great in this book but I did want to slap him for finally noticing Sookie after Bill shows an interest. I thought it was very realistic because people do this all the time but I still wanted to slap him because I hate it when this happens. I really had a good time reading about all of these characters and just remembering how these books sucked me into their world years ago. I do think that some of the later books in the series are stronger than this one.
I would recommend this book to others with the explanation that they are quite different from the HBO series. This book is really a quick and easy read that can be a lot of fun. This book is really just candy in book form. Nothing serious, nothing substantial, but a whole lot of fun.

My insightful 2011 review: I enjoyed this book. It was a quick, easy, and fun read. I am interested in seeing the HBO series after reading this book....more
Nobody looks good in their darkest hour. But it's those hours that make us what we are.
I have so many feeling associated with this book. When I grabbed it at a yard sale for 25¢, along with Darkfever and Bloodfever, I had absolutely no idea what I was getting myself into. I really had no idea that this series is probably more addictive than most street drugs (or so I have heard - I have no first hand knowledge regarding the addictive quality of street drugs). Once I started the first book in the series, I couldn't stop and I felt the same when I finished this book that first time so I immediately went to purchase the next book in the series.....and it had not yet been released. Anyone starting the series now has no idea what we went through. It was horrible. This book ends in a HUGE cliffhanger and I had to WAIT months to find out what happened.
The whole series is wonderful but this book really felt like a turning point for me. Things get a whole lot darker and Mac no longer resembles a Barbie doll in any way. Pink is no longer a part of her world and she realizes how bad things really are. She spends time with the other sidhe-seers and things go horrible wrong largely due to Rowena. She spends time with V'lane and Christian - Heck, Mac is one popular lady at this point in the book.

Barrons is around quite as much as I would have liked in this book but that's okay. We do get to see him have a great time watching Mac run around with her MacHalo and there is that one incident with a pink frosted birthday cake. I think in this book we see a bit of jealousy or something that looks a whole lot like jealousy out of Barrons regarding the time she spends with V'lane.
"You've mistaken me for someone else. Do not wait on me, Ms. Lane. Do not construct your world around mine. I'm not that man."
Once again I would recommend this book to everybody. I am just amazed by the world that Karen Marie Moning has created and the characters are superb. I really think that this series should be a must read for anyone who likes to read anything that is a bit paranormal. It is just so good. ...more
Question: When you're one of the few people who can do something to fix a problem, just how responsible does that make you for it? Answer: It's how you choose to answer that question that defines you.
I really can't understand why I only gave this book 4 stars the last time that I read it. Basically, I think that any book that I feel compelled to read not once, not twice but 3 times (so far) has to deserve 5 stars...it just has to be that way. I first came across this book at a yard sale along with two other books in the series. I paid 25¢ for it and still feel so lucky that I literally stumbled upon them. This series is an excellent example of why I am a reader. This world is real to be. I daydream about Barrons. When I hear songs mentioned in these books, I think about what was happening in the plot at the time. It really does not get much better than this.
I'd like to tell you that the monster under the bed is rarely as bad as you fear of it, but in my experience it's almost always worse.

Things get even a bit crazier in this book. Mac has had a lot to deal with in such a very short time. She is dealing better with everything she has found out about who and what she is in this installment in the series. She is smart and takes advice when she believes it will help her and really wants to learn. The monsters in this book get scarier and by the end of this book, she encounters some things that are completely frightening but she never gives up.
"What are you, Barrons?" "The one who will never let you die, and that's more, Ms. Lane, than anyone in your life has ever been able to say to you. More than anyone else can do."
I cannot think of a character in a book that I like more than Barrons. He can be an ass and we really don't know that much about who or what he really is but he is the most appealing man that I have ever encountered on the page of a book. When things need to be done, Barrons is there to do them and he always seems to be in control. He is able to save the day even when things look hopeless. He says things that make me laugh, make me think, and sometimes make me want to think mushy thoughts. Barrons is reason enough to read this series.
"One day you may kiss a man you can't breathe without, and find breath is of little consequence."
This book has some of the best lines. If you took some of these lines and shared them with others, they would never believe that it comes from a story like this. It's a different kind of book and makes you think at times. I think everyone should read this series. It is really that good. If you haven't read it yet, I urge you to pick up the first book in the series and get started right away.
I am bumping my rating up a star this time. Any book that makes me want to keep rThis review can also be found at Carole's Random Life.

5 Stars!
I am bumping my rating up a star this time. Any book that makes me want to keep reading it over and over like everyone of the books in this series should probably be rated a full 5 stars. I vividly remember the first time that I encountered this book. It was a Saturday morning during the summer and I had decided to go to a few yard sales. I was the happiest yard sale shopper around when I found a reader's house that had tons books for sale for 25¢ a piece. I left with a lot of great books that day but I found myself drawn to the three books by Karen Marie Moning - Darkfever, Bloodfever, and Faefever. I consumed all three very quickly and immediately looked for the next book in the series but it wasn't released yet. I only had to wait a couple of months until it was released but the wait was horrible. This book started it all and I can honestly say that it is one of the best quarters that I have ever spent.
MacKayla Lane, or Mac, is a southern girl. She's pretty, well loved and is content to live her life close to her family. That is until her sister Alina is murdered in Ireland. She goes to Ireland to try to solve her sister's murder and finds that Ireland is a whole different world than her little town of Ashford, Georgia. She sees things that are impossible in her mind.
"If you can't keep your head down and honor your bloodline, then do us all a favor-go die somewhere else."
After getting lost in Dublin, Mac finds herself at Barron's Books and Baubles. She asks a few questions that quickly spark the owner's attention. This is how we meet Jericho Z. Barrons. Barrons has got to be one of the best, if not the best, alpha male characters created on a page. In this book we see him save the day, act like an ass, kill, and even paint Mac's fingernails. This man can do anything AND he owns a book store. Sign me up as a huge fan.

He didn't just occupy space; he saturated it. The room had been full of books before, now it was full of him.
This book has some of the best world building that I have had the opportunity to read. This is the third time that I have read this book but the first time that I have read it since reading Shadowfever and I am amazed at how much is foreshadowed in this first book. Obviously, Moning had to have had the entire series plotted out before this novel was written and the details are just amazing. We learn with Mac what is going on in our world. I really like Mac a lot even in this first book. I love that we are able to watch her grow from the spoiled southern belle to the girl ready to fight and take risks during this first book in the series.

If you have not already read this series, then you really need to try to work it in....as soon as possible. It really is as good as everyone says - maybe better. This is really the kind of book that you will find yourself going back to again and again. Let me give you one piece of advice before you start Darkfever - get the whole series ready to go. There are some cliffhanger endings and you are going to need the next book as soon as you can get your hands on it. The year that I had to wait for Shadowfever to be released was torture - trust me you don't want to wait between these books. ...more
