So by all accounts I should have disliked this book. I did not. I loved it. Deeply.
At the risk of embarrassing myself, I don't 100% know what parts of the science were real or fiction or hypothetically true (aside from what felt glaringly obvious...well I sincerely hope the parts that I thought were fiction actually are fiction or we are munted). In the end it didn't matter because I completely understood the Science as it was presented in this book. Oddly, I also enjoyed and understood the mathsy type stuff as well. Anyone who has watched me count knows I still use my fingers...
It was such an entertaining story and I thought the two main characters were absolutely brilliant.
In and among the science there was humour. Exactly my type of humour.
"I penetrated the outer cell membrane with a nano syringe." "You poked it with a stick?" "No!" I said. "Well. Yes. But it was a scientific poke with a very scientific stick”
The audiobook was amazing and it was so well narrated. The 17 hours flew by!
This superb book is a must for science fiction lovers!
Well that was a thoroughly entertaining zombie romp! Plenty of terrifying undead gorging on screaming humans. A couple of central characters that are engaging, especially little Peter. Some isolated soldiers trying to find a safe location to defend, and hordes of the walking dead (and the odd scary running ones) sweeping over the country and tearing apart any living creatures in their path. A good example of classic, mindless zombie fiction. I am moving to book 2 immediately because I need to know what happens to Peter!...more

"I'd only made it this far because of dumb luck, because of my boobs."
An earthquake causes a zombie apocalypse and also opens up an underground world filled with chisel chested, well-endowed grey men. One of these grey men saves our main character, learns English by listening to steamy audiobooks, and spends the entire book groping her as they make their way through a zombie infested land.

However, I have a feeling that all the middle-schoolers I know might like a little bit more action in their survival stories. I liked the friendships that developed and the strength of the sibling relationships. Some rather tame ‘bad guys’ with a ‘dog eat dog’ attitude made a couple of appearances. They weren’t too scary which is appropriate for this text level.
A piece of advice for Readers. Just like when you are reading Neal Shusterman’s book ‘Dry’, you should have a bottle of water with you. It appears I am quite suggestible and spent large parts of the book guzzling water in response to the bone quenching thirst that was well described in the book. I would give this 3 stars with my middle school reader hat on, but in reality it was a 2 star read for me....more

Well that was a pretty great YA survival story!
Although the writing is very simple, the story itself is incredibly engaging. Alex faces numerous threats as he makes his way to his family after a volcanic eruption has spewed ash throughout parts of the US. It is very much a plot based story which is great if you are looking for a straight up action survival story. I think this will be popular with teens and I will order a couple for the library....more

Book 19 in my Zombie-a-thon!
CW: (view spoiler)[described suicides of people who do not want to turn into zombies after being infected, gore, loss of loved ones, death (hide spoiler)]
Well that was a mixed bag but overall a very engaging book. Some of the people interviewed told brilliantly frightening stories of zombie hordes sweeping through their towns. On the other hand, the interviews with authority figures whilst necessary for context, were dull as dishwater. I listened to this as an audiobook so appreciated the use of voice actors to reflect the international nature of the apocalypse. Very entertaining!...more
