Definitely the most interesting book in the series. Look, it's a good trilogy but not amazing. Something was missing throughout the entire series and I think it was any lasting emotional attachment. The characters were interesting and I liked the relationships but nothing hooked me and had me thinking of name mash-ups if you know what I mean. The focus seemed to be the story moving forward and things happening but nothing that had you gasping or swooning or feeling outraged. But I didn't at any point feel like I wasn't going to finish the series. Does that make sense? I liked it but also meh...Confusing.

A good follow up in which Kell and Lila compete in a pretty cool magical tournament. The magical battles were well written. What I found it i3.5 Stars
A good follow up in which Kell and Lila compete in a pretty cool magical tournament. The magical battles were well written. What I found it interesting slash weird is that in book 1 I honestly thought Lila was quite young. Suddenly in book 2 she is written a lot older and as a love interest. Maybe I wasn't paying enough attention in book 1? Holland is probably the most interesting character in this book. I found this book a lot more engaging than book 1 but still, something was missing that I've yet to identify.

I can say that because I finished the three books in the series back to back. I really enjoyed the characters and the different worlds but the plot lacked any complexity. It just moved from one event to another. I can say that it is absolutely worth continuing on with the series though as things got waaaay more interesting in books 2 and 3!

Well that was a glorious, weird and wonderful oddity of a book.
Firstly the writing is beautiful and bewitching. However, it is the children that had me hurting and smiling. The cast is a collection of young people who don't quite fit in this world for various reasons. Whether by chance or fate they went through secret doorways and found homes in other strange and wonderful lands. After being cast out of these lands and back into ill-fitting homes they were sent to Eleanor West’s Home for Wayward Children to adjust to life back in our world. This story is very much about being seen, being understood, and being loved for exactly who we are. Family and society's expectations of who we should be, or how we should be can create standards and norms that are prescriptive and restrictive. I absolutely loved this book about endearing children trying to be their authentic beautiful selves....more
