It was amazing to read the book that inspired other science fiction writers and movie makers and I was literally naming books and movies that I could see may have been inspired by this great novel. I did a little bit of reading about the novel and the time period it was written in, and it was fascinating to see that the invasion storyline was possibly due to feelings of unease in a time of British imperialism, and may have reflected fears that someone could do to Britain what they were doing to other nations. So many themes and ideas to contemplate in this novel. Interesting stuff!...more
Well that was a surprisingly tense read. I haven't seen any of the movie adaptations so didn't know what to expect. I think the ending was a 3.5 Stars
Well that was a surprisingly tense read. I haven't seen any of the movie adaptations so didn't know what to expect. I think the ending was a bit anticlimactic given that Jack had done a brilliant job of creating a growing sense of dread and unease. It all just ended a bit too easily in my opinion. Still a really good book that definitely has a place in a high school library for those who want a less flashy sci-fi mystery....more

Awakenings abound in this fantastic short novel! I loved reading about Lucy's growing conflicting feelings on society's expectations that women are to be protected and informed on how to behave, and her emerging confidence in her own judgement and desire for self determination. I wasn't wooed by the romance in the book. To me, it was Lucy's journey that was captivating. I also absolutely loved the final reveal about a supposedly ‘dreadful frozen Charlotte’. A book filled with sumptuous writing and wonderful symbolism. A must read.
It isn't possible to love and part. You will wish that it was. You can transmute love, ignore it, muddle it, but you can never pull it out of you. I know by experience that the poets are right: love is eternal....more
Well! Time can make a huge difference to how someone responds to a book. I found this to be dull as dishwater when I first read it, but twenty years later I found it engaging and I cannot stress enough how incredible the writing is! I was saying wow a lot because of the way the author captured moments or feelings marvellously. Not a lot happens in this novel as it is more of an exploration of the characters and the dynamics between them, with some meaty themes in there too. I am now going on to read some modern YA reimaginings of this well written novel.
