She Another case of me struggling to enjoy a book because I don't like the main character. Sera was angry and defensive a lot of the time. I get why. She was treated with disdain and mistrust because of her lowly seventh born status. She was held captive and has scars all over her body as a result of the evil magician draining her of her magic. I'd be angry too. As a Reader though, I need there to be qualities that will provide some balance so I can actually get behind a character. For me there were not. Plus the ratio of inner monologue to action as a way to move the plot forward was off. Others have enjoyed it so just a case of not for me....more

Tallie and Emmett were really difficult to like because their behaviour was a mix of inappropriate, unprofessional, unacceptable and invasive. I probably should have dnf'd at 4% when I could tell I would find Tallie a tad annoying but I pushed through. I went in expecting a more moving story but alas this was not the case.

Well, there were brilliant elements in here but unfortunately they didn't add up to anything great for me.
I'll set the scene for you. A woman fighting to keep her children safe in a dystopian world where her husband has disappeared. She embarks on a perilous journey, evading authorities at every turn, and then sets sail across treacherous oceans to find her husband. Sounds good right!
So why didn't I enjoy this?
It started off by establishing a frighteningly feasible dystopia where everyone is microchipped so their activity and whereabouts can be tracked "for their own safety". Mim is told her husband has gone missing and she sets off with her two young children to find him. What follows is an incredibly boring trek across the country with a main character I did not like whose children were unpleasantly willful. There were only a couple of 'close calls' with police and even then they were pretty non-eventful. This is followed by a long stint at sea where she battles her attraction to the yacht's captain. What a missed opportunity! Why didn't the author keep up the dystopian elements? They ended up serving no point as it didn't feature much in the rest of the story. At 48% I was so close to DNFing but I kept thinking surely something interesting will happen. Alas, aside from one or two tense moments it did not engage me. I will say this though, the writing itself is simply stunning, hence my 2 stars....more
Look, this wasn't a bad book but I really struggled to stay interested. I mean there was a talking zombie Book 17 in my Zombie-a-thon!
CW: Extreme gore
Look, this wasn't a bad book but I really struggled to stay interested. I mean there was a talking zombie collaborating with some dastardly humans. I don't know, it just felt a bit silly. Zombies are considerably less fearsome when they are talking like Tarzan. In addition to this, Jed started calling them "sucker faces", and I am pretty sure he said that about 10 times within about 2 minutes. Now I don't want to disrespect anyone and this is a genuine question - do Marines say 'rah' all the time? Some of the conversations felt like they were saying it so much it was just, "rah", "rah", "rah". I understood the conversation and the context, it just grew very very repetitive. Didn't quite work for me but in the interest of trying to meet my goal of 20 I will be reading book 3....more

"I'd only made it this far because of dumb luck, because of my boobs."
An earthquake causes a zombie apocalypse and also opens up an underground world filled with chisel chested, well-endowed grey men. One of these grey men saves our main character, learns English by listening to steamy audiobooks, and spends the entire book groping her as they make their way through a zombie infested land.
I really wish this novel was not about mermaids and sirens and weird snakey creature things.

The parts that look at racial and gender inequalities in society were really great.
The rest felt...weird. I'm a seasoned reader and I had to work pretty hard to make sense of this world. This is largely because it was quite under developed. It was also because it just didn't hold my attention. There are also some really significant pacing issues. It is so slow and nothing much actually happens. I almost dnf'd when one of them started calling the gargoyle "Gargy". It just got a bit ridiculous to be honest. ...more

Please understand that this wasn’t horrible, it just wasn’t engaging enough for me. I don’t really remember much of what that happened and I only finished it about 40mins ago. It kind of just plodded along while Nandans explored his sexuality. I absolutely loved ‘We Contain Multitudes’ and ‘Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe’ so I might get the tissues out and do some re-reading. ...more
