This bittersweet story takes fans of this series back to 1974 when LoveBeach House Memories by Mary Alice Monroe is a 2012 Gallery Books publication.
This bittersweet story takes fans of this series back to 1974 when Lovey and her two children spend the summer at her beloved cottage on Isle of Palm. Lovey, known as ‘The Turtle Lady,’ takes part in an official study of the Loggerhead turtles with a man named Russell Bennett. With a philandering husband leaving her for long periods of time, Lovey finds a strong connection with Bennett tempting her to risk the life she has built for the type of passionate love her soul is starving for….
As the story begins, we are reminded of Lovey’s ‘current day’ situation, as her memories sweep her away to the past as she awaits the chance to reunite with the love of her life.
Nearly every summer for some time now, I have enjoyed a book by Mary Alice Monroe. It’s a tradition and while the author has other series, this is my very favorite. This year, she did not a release a book in this series. But, as luck would have it, for some reason, as I was reading through the series, I skipped over this one, thinking that because the storyline didn’t involve Cara’s adult dramas, I could always come back and read it later without missing out on anything. Though I have been chided occasionally for ‘reading out of order’- I’m glad I held back on this one.
As always, the turtles play a big role in the story, and it is always a pleasure to be reminded of the great miracle of these fascinating creatures that brought Lovey so much joy. The author captures perfectly the time and place and struggles of women who carried the burden of appearances, duty, and expectations, who suffered and bent under the pressure, but was forced to relent and conform in a time where choices were still very limited.
I was aware, due to reading later installments in this series, that Lovey had known true love in her life, and it added yet another layer of attachment to the cottage and the time she spent there. Yet, I was not prepared for such a gripping emotional story that left tears standing in my eyes.
It is strange that of all the wonderful Rutledge family stories I’ve read nearly every summer for a while now, this one, that has spent years gathering virtual dust on my Kindle, is the one that may have left the biggest emotional imprint on my heart.
The mind often dictates the heart. Yet, I believe that the heart is the truer guide
While the Beach House series may have run its course, or is at my most optimistic, simply on hiatus, this story has reminded me of all the beloved characters that brought me my own wonderful summer memories. I do hope we meet them all again someday…...more

While providing refreshments for a Willow Creek homeless shelter fundraiser, Daisy learns of a fertility clinic disaster, which dashed the hopes a young couple hoping depending on it to start a family.
Before she can learn more, masked protesters, who oppose opening the shelter arrive on the scene. One of those involved is Eli, a young man who left his Amish community, with some advice from Hiram, his attorney.
It comes to light that Hiram also represents the fertility clinic in question. When Hiram is found dead, Eli becomes a suspect, as do those hurt by the fertility clinic. Despite Daisy’s reluctance to get involved, she is slowly drawn into the investigation.
Meanwhile, Daisy’s family life is as busy as ever, but at a most satisfying stage- as her relationships seem to have stabilized a little- giving her more time to help others, and apply her detecting skills.
This is one of my favorite cozy mystery series. It is always nice to drop in and see what my old friends have up to, and see how everyone is doing. Often times, I would get more caught up in the family saga than in the mystery, but in this installment the mystery was more front and center- and what a mystery it was!!
Briskly paced, fraught with emotion and tension, the dual threads of Eli, and the fertility clinic, kept me engaged and on my toes at the same time.
I enjoyed how the Amish was prominently featured in the story, and as always, the wonderful teas and food. Once more, my affection for the characters have deepened, which is one of the main draws to this series.
I think the mysteries are becoming more complex as the series progresses, and are as deeply compelling as the lives of the recurring characters.
This is another stellar chapter in this beloved series! Can’t wait for the next one!...more

Good old-fashioned southern comfort!
The Coronavirus has the whole country is its grip, that includes the Rutgledge family.
Because of the virus, the aquarium is closed, so Linnea has been laid off. Because of the financial hit, she's temporarily moved into the beach house- rent free.
Sadly, her boyfriend, Gordon, is stuck in England and can’t travel to the US because of the virus lockdowns, and what’s worse, her former lover, John, is back in town, quarantining at his mother’s house.
Linnea really wishes she could avoid John, but that turns out to be next to impossible, forcing her lingering feelings for him to resurface.
Despite the challenges she faces, Linnea has family and friends to lean on as she navigates her tumultuous feelings for both, Gordon and John. Faced with a difficult choice, Linnea ponders her future, while carving her own path towards personal independence.
It’s not summer without an installment in the ‘Beach House’ series by Mary Alice Monroe!!
This is the first novel I’ve read, miraculously, that incorporated Covid into the plot, making it a part of the landscape the characters had to navigate.
The sobering challenges of job loss, financial strain, family distance, quarantines, and sickness proved that the Rutledge clan still has the temerity to rise to any and all occasions. The characters make mistakes, but as always, they grow stronger through adversity.
Linnea’s personal journey is now the main focus of the series, as Cara moves into more of a secondary character role. I really loved the way Linnea came to understand how she needed to proceed with her personal life. I'm not sure what others will make of her decision, but I thought she did the right thing.
There were, as always, laughter and tears, and heartwarming moments as these characters lives continue to evolve over time. I always look forward, with eager anticipation, to catching up with these beloved characters, both the younger and older generations of the family, the turtles, and the charming beach house that serves as an anchor in challenging times…
Overall, I’m sure writing a book set during the early days of the pandemic, and dealing with some transitional character development, must have been daunting. MAM did a fabulous job with integrating the changes and giving voice to the fears we faced during 2020, spoken through the strong southern Rutledge women, and their commitment to each other, their family, and to their own true selves as well.

Another beautiful love story by Mary Balogh!
When her cousin, Abigail, who is more like a sister to her, got married, Lady Jane Steel felt a little let down. Although, she no longer believes she will find true love for herself, she feels it is time for her to get married, regardless.
While considering her options, Lady Jane encounters Gabriel Thorne, a mystery man who has returned to his home country after spending many years in America. Gabriel, as it so happens, is looking for a wife- no love match required. Learning of Lady Jane’s heritage, he decides she will fit his needs exactly, and intends to pursue her.
He finds himself in competition with the very man who hopes to steal Gabriel’s inheritance. Not only that, but Lady Jane puts up more resistance to his plans than he anticipated, by insisting she be ‘romanced’!!
Time is of the essence for Gabriel, but he ultimately decides Lady Jane is worth the extra time and effort. Will she accept his proposal or fall under the spell of his more charismatic nemesis?
This is the lone Historical Romance series I try to keep up with. I may fall a few chapters behind- but I never totally lose track of this author or whatever series she is currently writing. While I will admit the series was initially hard to get into, I slowly fell in love with it, more and more as it went along. This one, though, is exceptionally good!! I loved the setup, which includes a mystery, and a tender story about a special relative of Gabriel’s.
The romance is also delightful, as Lady Jane realizes how her experience and class would be a huge asset to Gabriel, but also wishes to be appreciated for the woman behind the title and her public persona.
Overall, this was just wonderful story all the way around. I’m very much looking forward to the next book in this lovely series....more

An absorbing page turner!
In troubling times, it is often comforting to turn to something familiar. Some folks binge watch favorite series, others are re-reading favorite books instead of searching for something that will hold their divided, distracted attention. For me, I have found reading new installments in my favorite mystery series to be very calming and cathartic.
This book happens to be the latest chapter in one of my favorite series, and is also an upcoming release- a win-win! I am also happy to report this book not only held my attention, it kept me guessing from beginning to end!
In this fifth installment, Daisy accepts a catering job for Margaret Vaughn, who is hosting a tea for her theatre group. Margaret has recently moved back to Pennsylvania after pursuing a career in acting in New York. Now she is residing, with her millionaire husband, in her historic farmhouse.
Margaret isn’t exactly the warmest person, but when Daisy finds her body in the pantry, covered in clotted cream, she is shocked to the core- believing she might 'never view clotted cream the same way again'…
One of the great things about cozies is that they are 100% pure 'whodunits'. Trying to figure out who the culprit is and what the motive might be amongst the suspects is always challenging and fun. But the other great thing about cozies is checking in on the personal lives of the recurring characters, who over time begin to feel like old friends.
In this episode, Daisy is experiencing some anxiety due to the impending birth of her first grandchild, her mother’s odd behavior, and the prospect of her younger daughter’s first visit with her birth mother and her family.
The author does a magnificent job with balancing the mystery with the family drama. Both threads are interesting and compelling and kept me turning pages past my bedtime. I also appreciate the depth and maturity of this installment, which addresses some important mental health issues, without becoming too heavy. In fact, the writing here is so good, I’d go so far as to say this book would appeal to a broader audience, including those who enjoy contemporary or women's fiction.
The story has a few nice twists and some big surprises you won't want to miss out on.
Of course, it goes without saying, there are some delicious recipes included and I want to try all of them!!
Overall, this is another great addition to what has quickly become one of my very favorite cozy series. You can bet I will be the first in line for the next chapter! I can hardly wait!!

“Meg, something’s wrong with Santa.”
Meg has volunteered to organize the Christmas parade-a chore she didn’t realize required so much effort. But whatever helps Michael gain tenure…
The theme for the parade is The Twelve Days of Christmas, and like all good holiday parades, Santa will be there to hear the children’s Christmas requests.
Naturally, things go horribly awry when ‘Santa’ is found murdered!!
As you know, I am slowly reading through this series, in order. With so many installments, I got a little mixed up on which book came next in the series and accidentally skipped this one. I realized my mistake immediately, and corrected the issue, but was a little disappointed when I realized the next book in line had a Christmas theme because after my holiday reading marathon in December, I’m pretty burned out on Christmas stories.
But because it has been a long time since I touched base with Meg, and because I needed to read a book that was sure to make me laugh, I decided to suck it up.
Turns out, I made the right decision! Meg is, as always, hysterically funny. The holiday parade was outrageously madcap, and as always, the characters are quirky and comical. The mystery is also an exceptional whodunit, but of course, the holiday theme adds just a dash of extra magic and charm to this installment in the series.

When Madison, a popular, well recognized movie star, discovers she was switched at birth, she needs time to process and adjust. She moves to Valentine Bay to be near the Bravos, but she keeps her distance from them, trying to screw up the courage to meet them face to face.
Meanwhile, Madison takes every precaution to keep her identity a secret. She also lusts after her buff neighbor, Sten Larson. She even devises clever ways get him to come over to her place. But, as nice and protective as Sten is, he keeps Madison at arm’s length, knowing that under the circumstances they couldn’t possibly have a future together.
I’ve been tapping my feet impatiently waiting for Madison’s story. I was curious to see how she would respond to the information about her birth family. This part of the story was handled beautifully, as most anyone would have felt intimidated by the Bravo’s and meeting a family you never knew you had. Sten’s gentle encouragement helps Madison make those first tentative steps towards her new family, which she definitely needed.
The romance is very light, sensual, and sweet. The chemistry between Madison and Sten is palpable, slowly building as they spend time together. The romance between an ‘ordinary guy’, with a blue-collar occupation, and the glamorous movie star might seem destined to fail in the long term- but when there is a will, there’s a way, and true love always conquers all.
This is a truly romantic story, but part of what makes this story so special, is the beautiful HEA, which has a touching long-term love story quality to it. I closed the book with a dreamy sigh and a big smile on my face.

The ‘Beach House’ series has been a favorite summer treat of mine for years. Unfortunately, last summer, I couldn’t manage to squeeze this book into my schedule, despite my very best intentions.
With the weather being especially cold and gloomy this past week, the thought of a nice, warm, ‘beach read’ sounded good- which reminded me I had a Mary Alice Monroe novel I had never gotten around to reading.
I was really looking forward to touching base with the characters I have grown to care for and checking in on those wonderful turtles. However, this book was not at all like the previous installments. For starters, there is a hurricane threatening the coast and everyone is headed inland, which could have been an interesting story line, but…
Cara Rutledge, the main protagonist of the entire series, is barely present in this story at all. Instead, we meet an entirely new group of people whose lives are centered around the equestrian world.
Unfortunately, the characters and all their dramas just did not resonate with me in the slightest. I can’t name one thread that struck a chord with me or touched me emotionally.
I finished the book just to see who ended up with whom, just out of curiosity, but overall the book was dull and uninspiring to me. This is the first book of the series that fell flat, but I will stick with the series if Monroe decides to continue with it- provided the story is once again centered around Cara and the beach house. I sincerely hope this series hasn’t run its course.

A lovely story about how three adorable little girls and a pregnant cat brought two people together to create one big happy family-‘Fur-ever’!!
When Pippa, Penny, and Paris find a pregnant cat, their father, Dan Sutton, takes her to an animal shelter. There, they meet a shelter volunteer named Emma Alvarez. As a single father with a demanding career, Dan doesn’t think he can take on the responsibility of a caring for a pet, especially one expecting a litter of kittens.
However, he and his girls do check in with Emma to see how “Fiesta” the cat is doing. As Dan and the “Three P’s’” get to know Emma, Dan sees how well the girls respond to her. So, he offers her a job as their Nanny and she accepts the position. There are a few misunderstandings, and the girls are still coping with the way their mother left them, but things are working out very well…
Well, except that Dan and Emma are finding it hard not to give in to their mutual attraction to one another!
The cover of this book caught my attention right away! A basket full of kittens!! I love books that spotlight rescue pets in the story, so I had a good feeling about this book right from the start. The children featured in the story are also a big part of why the book is so sweet- and aren’t their names adorable??
But with all the pets, kids, and family dramas, it might sound like Emma and Dan would have a hard time finding sexy time, but the chemistry between them is just right and their feelings and sensuality develop in a healthy way.
The story is quite charming, and I was really enjoying the progress the family was making when – uh oh! A surprise twist came along- and it was a doozy!!
Can Emma and Dan accept these new developments and put old hurts behind them, or will circumstances force them to take a different path?
This is a gentle, heartwarming story, the kind that is good for your mind and heart, reminding us that in an imperfect world, love can provide the strength to forgive, and can find a way to heal broken hearts, bringing people together who are a purr-fect fit.

A fun, fast paced, and very special addition to the Caprice De Luca Mystery Series!
I have been eagerly anticipating this installment, knowing that finally Caprice will tie the knot with the love of her life. But, of course, as with any wedding, there is bound to be a last- minute snafu or two. But, for Caprice, a murder investigation could put a serious damper on all her wedding plans.
Caprice is planning to have her wedding reception at the Rambling Vines Winery, but when one of the owners is found murdered, it looks as though all her carefully laid plans were for naught. To make matters worse, the widow of the murdered man, who once had a dalliance with Caprice’s brother Vince, asks him to represent her, should she need legal counsel.
This puts a strain on Vince’s relationship with Roz, one of Caprice’s best friends. In order to save her wedding plans and to help ease tensions between Vince and Roz, Caprice steps in to help investigate the murder, hoping to find the killer before her big day.
I read this book in one sitting! I really did want to savor it a bit longer, but I couldn’t put it down!!
As always, the adorable pets featured in previous installments make an appearance, and they deserve an honorable mention, especially since they add so much charm to this wonderful series.
However, the mystery and family drama is what we came for, and Smith delivers a slam dunk. I was riveted to the pages, caught up in the emotions the featured couples were experiencing. Pre-wedding stress led to flared tempers and second thoughts. The mystery kept me on my toes, with several clever red herrings tossed in. I never came close to figuring out whodunit.
Overall, this is a well- constructed cozy mystery, is fast paced, will real depth. This is a wonderful and fun series, filled with love, family, and adorable fur babies. Caprice is a terrific character!! With each new chapter in this series, I feel like I’m visiting old friends I’ve really come to care about. So, what’s not to love? 4.5 stars...more

Entertaining thrill ride-
Rye, a ‘freight dog’ pilot has agreed to fly time sensitive cargo in pea soup fog. But, just as he sees the runway, he’s blinded by a laser and crashes. Thankfully, he’s not injured and the mystery box on-board is undamaged.
When he meets the doctor to which the box is to be delivered to, they get off to a rocky start. But, when Rye learns the package was given, not to Dr. Lambert, as agreed, but to a different doctor, Brynn O’Neal, his suspicions are raised. So he sticks around to make sure the box makes it to the correct receiver. He doesn’t trust Brynn and it’s his reputation on the line.
Brynn is an enigma, a woman with a troubled past, which only magnifies Rye’s distrust of her. But, she intrigues him, tempting him to stick around, not only to protect his reputation, and satisfy his curiosity about the mysterious box Brynn is so protective of, but to keep an eye on the beautiful Dr. O’Neal.
This story starts off like any standard romantic suspense novel- Brynn and Rye collide, literally. Then intrigue develops amid the mistrust and mystery surrounding Brynn and that valuable box everyone is so determined to get their hands on. There’s a lot of sexual tension in the air and some snappy dialogue between the two main characters.
However, the story is slow moving and doesn’t really hit its stride until well over the half way mark. There was enough going on to keep me turning pages, but I wasn’t particularly impressed until the second half got underway. From that point forward, the twists come at you at a rapid- fire pace, and the story takes on a new dimension entirely.
While this plot was not exactly plausible, there were some very real moral dilemmas that were entirely too probable. Big money and greed should not enter into such an equation, but of course it does, and always will. This thought -provoking element gave the story more depth and deepened the character study and growth.
Rye could be a jerk sometimes and his reasoning for sticking around was a little thin, but by the last quarter of the book, he’d redeemed himself and had begun to earn my respect.
Brynn remained a mystery for a long time, but I did feel she was judged harshly, based on her upbringing, without taking into consideration all the accomplishments she had made as an adult. Jeez.
However, at the end of the day, it’s morally bankrupt villains, the danger, action and suspense that propel the story forward as well as the tantalizing romantic elements.
Although, I wouldn’t call this one of Brown’s most impressive stories, it did eventually develop nicely and kept me entertained, which is good enough for me.

Frank Guidry, is one of Marcello’s best guys, but Frank, unknowingly became a part of the assassination plan, which means he has become a loose end, meaning his days are numbered.
Making a run for it, Frank encounters, Charlotte, a young mother who decided to leave her ne’er do well husband. Charlotte is having some car trouble, and winds up at the same motel as Frank. The two strike up a conversation and before long, the wheels in Frank’s mind start turning. Anyone searching for him would not be looking for a man traveling with a family. So, he offers Charlotte and her children a ride to her aunt’s home in LA. It is the perfect set up for Frank, until he realizes he’s put this young mother and her children in grave danger, and his once hardened heart, can’t bear the thought of that.
As the couple spends more time together, Charlotte starts to care for Frank as well, and although, deep down, she senses something about him isn’t entirely on the up and up, she still puts her faith in him, remaining completely ignorant of her precarious situation. Frank’s time with Charlotte, under the strain of life on the run, facing his own mortality, has him contemplating a different kind of life, one where he could have a family of his own.
Lou Berney certainly has a way with words. He also perfectly captures the shocked and grief- stricken mood of the country, building rich, dark, and conflicted characterizations, while keeping the reader on the edge of their seats with a palpable atmosphere of foreboding.
This is another amazing story by Berney. I don't know how he manages to capture time in a perfect freeze frame, holding the characters still, right in that moment, where the entire world seemed to shift with JFK’s murder. The story is chilling, yet, has its moments of genuine pleasure. The road trip, the fraught romantic entanglements, and the inner thoughts of the characters, as they each reach a life changing fork in the road- as does the country is a stunning combination.
There’s a new door opening on the one just closed, pitting the feeling of hope against the feeling of dread.
“With every decision we create a new future. We destroy all other futures.”
Once more, for me, here is a mob figure I find myself liking, despite everything I know about it him and the actions I’ve seen him take. Watching him transform was maybe a little bittersweet, under the circumstances, but it was also a big part of why this book ticks all the boxes.
Charlotte is braver that she may appear to some readers, as in the early sixties, divorce was still a stigma. I admired her tenacity, and the way her resolve strengthened, the more empowered she feels by the possibility of controlling her own destiny.
This book is riveting, suspenseful, and so eloquently written, at times I thought my heart might skip a beat.

As the early reviews for this book started to trickle in, I was concerned by too many opening lines that began with: ‘I love Kate Morton’s books, she is one of my favorite authors, but…’
In a year where I’ve been very disappointed in some of my favorite authors, I was terrified it was about to happen again. However, I was determined to keep an open mind, and still eagerly anticipated reading this one. But, by the time the book made it to the top of the heap, I also felt a great deal of trepidation.
The writing, as always, is simply mesmerizing. Morton’s prose is eloquent and often a thing of beauty. But, the story, this time around, failed to draw me in. I even put the book aside for a while and picked it back up in October hoping the ghostly theme would fit into my fall and Halloween frame of mind.
Sadly, I still struggled with it, mightily. For one thing, the pacing is too slow, and there is that large cast of characters, something I tend to struggle with, even under the best of circumstances. I often complain I'm not receiving enough of a challenge in my books. I feel authors often dumb things down for mass consumption, but in this case, I had to work entirely too hard to piece the puzzle together. As embarrassing as it is to admit, when I finished the book I was just plain confused. I had to go back and re-read large portions of the story before it finally came together for me. After all that labor, the ending was very anticlimactic, unsatisfactory, and literally limped across the finish line.
I’ve put off writing this review because I just didn’t feel up to the grueling exercise of trying to articulate my thoughts, especially since, like so many others, Morton is one my all -time favorite writers. Her talent is still quite evident, but with Morton, who is the opposite of prolific, I will have the taste of this book in my mouth for a long time before she provides me with an opportunity to rinse it out.
However, I do think I may still have one of her back-listed titles languishing in my TBR pile, so maybe that will help cleanse the palate until Morton offers more sustenance- hopefully, sooner, rather than later.

Cassie owns an inn/ bed and breakfast style establishment in the Avant- garde city of Austin, Texas. But, foremost, in her heart, she is an artist and uses her talent to give art lessons on top of her responsibilities at the inn.
Nash Tremont is a guest at Cassie’s Inn. He’s originally from Oklahoma but is in town doing a little private investigating off the clock, working a case that has personal ramifications for him.
But, as he and Cassie spend more time together they begin to realize they really enjoy one another’s company, and are very attracted to each other, despite the fact both of them are harboring big whopping secrets.
However, Nash finds Cassie very easy to talk to and as his feelings for her develop into something deeper he finds himself opening up to her a little more each day. But, Cassie’s secrets could change Nash’s opinion of her and send him packing. Will Cassie take a chance and trust Nash with the secrets of her troubling past?
Everyone has secrets, some more complicated than others, and we all have a right to those secrets, but in Nash and Cassie’s case, they both end up living a lie to protect themselves from getting hurt. While they may have good reasons it wasn’t healthy for them individually, much less as a couple. This means that if they want their relationship to work, they'll have to lay all their cards on the table.
I love reading stories that feature characters with strength and depth, who struggle with situations beyond their control, and fight to maintain their own integrity, while refusing to allow the circumstances to define them. I enjoy watching couples face conflict, but learn to work through their fears, doubts, and trust issues, while learning to accept and forgive in the process.
This is one of those types of stories. Wonderful characters, heartwarming gestures, combined with a little sensuality made this a satisfying contemporary romance, all the way around. 4 stars ...more

With her sister and brother-in-law by her side, Carly may need to accept the reality that her child will die soon after she is born.
Hunter, a physicist, has a tough decision to make. Upon hearing of his sister-in-law’s prognosis, he knows he can save her child. How? By traveling back to the future.
As it happens, Hunter is from 2018, but he traveled back in time after his wife dies, meets Carly, then her sister, whom he marries, and starts a family with. He’s carved out a nice life for himself and is content. But, he is willing to risk it all for Carly and her baby. Will she believe he is from the future? Is she brave enough to travel into the future? Will she be able to return to 1970? How will the truth effect Hunter’s marriage to Carly's sister?
I’ve been sitting on this book for a while. I knew it would be good because Diane Chamberlain has never disappointed me. The early reviews were amazing. But, I still procrastinated, waiting for the day the book called out to me.
After I finished the book, I just couldn’t find the words to write a review. So, I procrastinated some more. I hope I can do the book justice, especially after reading so many wonderful reviews of this amazing book!
As I have said many times, time travel is a hard sell for me. But, this may be the most realistic and believable depiction of time travel possibilities I have ever read. However, it is the mother’s love for her child that resonates, that makes the risks worth it.
The story is also one of the most suspenseful novels of its kind I’ve ever read. The emotions are raw, tangible, almost physical. I was riveted, held captive by this story, the suspense nearly intolerable, but I was simply unable to tear myself away from it.
The characters are eclectic, Carly is obviously the most sympathetic, while others are an enigma. The twists and turns are breathtaking, surreal, and pulse pounding, holding me on the edge of my seat, with my heart in my throat.
This novel is so well constructed, so thought provoking, poignant and soul- stirring!! I don’t think I’ve read anything quite like it before. Chamberlain’s novels always leave an impression on me, but this one captured my imagination, and left me reeling with emotions. I loved it! Loved it! This one is imprinted on my brain and in my heart and I promise it will not fade from my consciousness for a long time to come!!

Backman continues to amaze-
Every year there are a handful of holiday themed novels I never managed to read before the season was over, and this one falls into that category.
If I had been able to get my hands on a copy before Christmas, I wouldn't have had any problems working it into my schedule. In fact, I would have pushed it to the top of the pile, no matter how short or long it was. But, I missed any and all ad campaigns for this book, somehow, so by the time it cropped up on my radar the wait time at the library was so long I thought it might be NEXT Christmas before I got a copy.
Well, I obviously didn’t have to wait quite long- but the story was worth waiting for-
This is a very, very short story, and the plot line is written in such a way that to expound upon it, even briefly, would give too much away.
So, let me just say, this is a very thought- provoking story that prompts the reader to take stock, to cherish the small moments, to live life to its fullest, and to keep your priorities straight, and remember what is truly important in this life.
Although the story is a fantasy, it is very emotional, a little dark, and very atmospheric. As the holidays are often a time of reflection, Christmas was a perfect backdrop for this story to unfold.
But, despite the big Christmas tree on the cover, which clearly suggests this is a Christmas-themed story- it is one that can, and should be read and reflected upon all year round.

When Murder with Lemon Tea Cakes by Karen Rose Smith is a 2017 Kensington publication.
A fantastic start to a new and refreshing cozy mystery series!
When Daisy’s Aunt Iris finds herself under investigation for the death of her boyfriend, Harvey Fitz, who was murdered right there in the garden of their lovely tea shop, Daisy must rise to the occasion and find the real killer before her aunt is arrested.
Meanwhile, Daisy is dealing with her adopted teenage daughter’s desire to meet her birth mother, and wrestling with the possibility of dating again after the death of her husband.
Although this is the first book in a new series, I felt as though Daisy and I were old friends. I immediately bonded with her and really enjoyed the tea shop setting. The tea servings and all the various flavors of tea were described so beautifully, and the shop seemed truly delightful, even if it was a crime scene- and oh my- I could almost taste those lemon tea cakes! Having all the female characters named after flowers is a nice touch, as well.
The town square is picturesque, featuring other small businesses, and the characters are all very interesting and maybe a bit quirky at times. All these elements are very important with a cozy mystery of this nature and is part of the charm. The author did a very good job setting the stage for future installments.
The murder mystery is also connected to a coin collection that Aunt Iris has inadvertently found herself involved in and is not quite sure how she should proceed, which complicates an already tense situation. The mystery was cleverly planned out, with plenty of viable suspects, which kept me guessing from start to finish.
I am very much looking forward to more adventures with Daisy and am curious to see how her love life develops, as well.
I picked this book out on a cold, wet day and it was the perfect cure for a gray, dreary day. I love the bright yellow cover, too!
This is a very solid introduction to this new series, which also includes a few of the yummy recipes featured in the book!

A wonderful story of family, forgiveness, traditions, and personal growth-
Luz is tormented by grief and feelings of guilt about not agreeing to accompany her beloved grandmother, Abuela, to Angangueo, Mexico on a quest to follow the monarch butterfly, after Abuela passed away suddenly. Abuela's death prompts Luz to follow through on the pilgrimage her grandmother had so desperately wanted them to take. Despite, her boyfriend’s misgivings, Luz, with her grandmother’s ashes in tow, climbs into her VW bug for what will turn out to be one long, and very eventful road trip…
I discovered Mary Alice Monroe several years back when I fell in love with her ‘Lowcountry Summer’ series. Since then, I have become an enormous fan of the ‘Beach House’ series, too. I’ve always wanted to go back and read some of her older titles too- well, I really want to read All her books, actually, so I decided to hunker down and make that happen.
This title is a decade old, but it has Monroe’s signature style stamped all over it. The author includes a wealth of information about Monarch butterflies in the same way she spotlights Dolphins in the ‘Lowcountry’ series, and Turtles in the ‘Beach’ series.
A few things in the novel are already slightly dated, and this one is not quite as polished as Monroe’s later series, but the story is one that still resonates today. It features four different women who make important life choices, create new bonds and friendships, and begin new chapters in their lives by shaking off the parts of themselves that have been holding them back, as they find the courage to move forward with renewed hope and purpose.
Overall, I enjoyed this ‘oldie but goodie’ from one of my favorite authors. I’m looking forward to reading more of her older titles as well as her new novel due out this coming May!

I fell in love with Mary Alice Monroe’s ‘Lowcountry series’, and couldn’t wait to read more of her books.
I decided to start with the ‘Beach House’ series when I found out there will be a new chapter released this coming June. If I hurry, maybe I can catch up before the new book is published!
This story centers around Caretta Rutledge, a high powered, fiercely independent, career woman, who receives a phone call from her mother asking her to return home, just as her well-orchestrated life goes belly up.
Caretta had left home twenty years ago to escape a tense family life, but now that she is at loose ends, her mother’s plea stirs her emotions enough to accept the invitation to visit.
Olivia, “Lovie” Rutledge is known as the ‘turtle lady’ because of her dedication to the loggerhead turtles. Lovie has moved out of her nice home and into her beloved beach house, which holds her most treasured memories.
The resentment Cara holds in her heart must finally be faced as her mother makes a shocking revelation, and Cara’s brother, Palmer, connives, manipulates, and attempts to control every aspect of his mother’s life.
I loved the interesting information each chapter opened with, concerning the loggerhead turtles. This was so fascinating. I could understand why Lovie was so attached and how it became so important to her.
It’s also a little jarring how this book, published in 2002, seemed to capture a generation gap I found familiar.
It’s hard to believe now, but I knew people like Lovie, women of a certain era, who endured years of quiet suffering due to an overbearing and controlling spouse. But, she also allowed it to continue, never finding the courage to call the bully’s bluff.
Lovie, was of that time where men made the decisions, and everyone fell into line, or else. Lovie was ‘taken care of’, never learning how to fully stand on her own two feet, even after her husband passed away, because she then allowed her son to step into his father’s shoes and boy, was he a chip off the old block.
Cara represents the strong, independent woman who saw her mother’s life for what it was and knew she had to escape, thus breaking a chain, that may have continued for generations. Yet, at this turning point in her life, the resentments that threaten to boil over, must take a back seat, as she fights bigger battles. She also begins to wonder if maybe there is room in her life for more than her important career, something she’s never seriously considered before.
A secondary thread running through the story involved a young, unwed pregnant girl, trying to break the chain of abuse, who Lovie took in and forged a bond with. This is a very strong storyline that is equally important to the novel’s theme.
Sometimes a good southern contemporary novel is just what I need to soothe my troubled heart and mind. This book is just what the doctor ordered!
The book deals with some heavier subject matter, specifically that of abusive relationships, whether they be physical, mental, verbal or emotional, or between siblings, parent/ child, or husband/wife. Abuse comes in many forms, some being quite obvious, while others are very subtle.
But, the story is also about healing, forgiveness, and second chances, family and relationships, and redemption. It’s about strong women who face adversity with grace and fortitude, and who love, support, and lift each other up.
I think this series is perfect for summer beach reading and I’m already looking forward to catching up with these characters again real...more
