Roque wants to make a go of it in Texas, but what family he has there is not exactly welcoming, nor are the locals who are wary of his northern accent and the way he dresses. But Susanna remembers Roque when he used to visit the area many years ago. She had a big crush on him back then- so, when she sees him struggling to fit in and get on his feet, she takes him under her wing, showing him the ropes, so to speak.
Her strategy pays off in ways neither of them counted on. Susanna gets more clients than she ever could have hoped for, and Roque finds himself getting more work. But the feelings developing between them was not a part of their agreement…
It’s that time of year again… and love is in the air. Many people decide to read a romance novel during the month of February because of Valentine’s Day, but because I read romance novels on a regular basis, I decided to find one with ‘Valentine’ in the title. My library had this one front and center and because it was a ‘heartwarming’ story, I felt I’d found the exact kind of book I was looking for.
As it turns out, it was! This is a very sweet, romantic story. It’s clean and wholesome- with the gentle message of accepting people who are different from us. The story is very light- there’s no super serious subject matter or heavy emotions. It’s just a wonderful, feel-good story- and it will definitely put you in a romantic mood.

As Gray buries his cold, hard hearted father, he vows to embrace the land that is his heritage and avoid becoming the bitter, hateful man his father was.
To that end, he approaches Abby Douglas, a woman who has a heart of gold, and is the polar opposite of his former wife, with a sudden marriage proposal.
Initially insulted by Gray’s version of marriage, eventually he convinces Abby to give it a try. But, once the deal is sealed, Abby’s unrequited love for Gray becomes even more unbearable and Gray’s personality quickly begins to mimic his father’s more than ever.
As Christmas approaches and Gray’s ‘no Christmas celebration’ rule still stands in effect, Abby must face some hard realities about her marriage. Will their marriage ever grow into something deeper or is Abby doomed to a lifetime of loneliness?
This is a heavy, dramatic, story about two people damaged emotionally by a parent who was more concerned about their own needs than that of their children. Gray believes he is incapable of loving someone and is still bitter about this first wife’s extramarital affair's.
Abby, who is dependable, reliable, predictable and practical, is exactly the kind of woman Gray thinks will make a good companion. No frills, no thrills. Just a man and a woman who entered into a partnership and agree to work together to make a home for Gray’s teenage daughter and give Abby the chance to have children of her own. But, Abby has issues with her self -image, believing she is plain and unattractive. While she has loved Gray for so long, never able to find a man to compare with him all these years, his obvious image of her doesn’t exactly make her feel sexy or desired.
Well, it looks like I’m in the minority once again. This book has been enthusiastically well-received with an overwhelming number of five- star ratings and reviews. But, sadly, this one didn’t blow me away. Gray is a guy all us ladies want to feel compassion for, wanting to break through all those walls and barriers he has around his heart. He seemed to know, on an intellectual level, that he wasn’t the warmest guy on earth, but he wanted to love and be loved, he just didn’t know how and didn’t want to admit it.
But, I had hoped Abby would soften up those rough edges. Unfortunately, as the story progressed, I thought Gray was ruling his home with an iron fist. He was the boss and Abby was his employee. It was his way or the highway. He wouldn’t bend, not even the slightest for her. She always had to conform to his wishes.
But, here is the thing. I agree that love is hard, that it can hurt, that we can love people even when they are hard to love. I get that Abby’s disposition was not naturally combative, that she had confidence issues, that she was a ‘good girl’, that she’d made a deal with Gray, but frankly, she was a doormat. She didn’t have much pride in herself. Even when she did rise to the occasion and challenge Gray, she always backed down and eventually became resigned to her fate. Being nice doesn’t mean you can’t stand up for yourself or you should allow people to run all over you.
That said, I had pretty much given up on this couple, when finally, at the eleventh hour- literally- the holiday spirit finally made an appearance- and did so with relish. The ending was almost worth all the torture leading up to it.
While I don’t like the saccharine overdoses in many holiday themed romances, I do like my Christmas stories a bit sweeter than this one was. But, the story did redeem itself nicely in the end. 2.5 rounded up.

Tessa’s date for a wedding she didn’t even want to attend in the first place, stands her up. Before she can get away, though, her boss rings and informs her, she’s been fired, until he realizes she’s at the wedding of the famous hockey player, Rockford James. If she can get a juicy scoop, she will get to keep her job.
Mason James, Rock’s brother, isn’t a hot shot athlete. He’s a rancher, the one keeping the family land up and running. It's in in his blood, but unfortunately, he is often overshadowed and used to get close to his more famous brother.
He’s told over and over again, that someday he’ll meet the right girl, that he'll be the next one to get married. But Mason is fine being single- until he meets Tessa Kane.
You’ve heard of ‘cute meet’ before- but Mason and Tessa’s introduction is more like ‘awkward, beyond embarrassment, meet.” Mason, the gentleman that he is, offers to be Tessa’s date for the wedding. The more they see one another, the deeper they fall, but Tessa isn’t telling Mason the truth about her job, deceiving him, while gathering information for her article.
She's ridden with guilt and shame for her duplicity, but due to the financial straits she and her grandmother are in, she has no choice but to continue with the lie.
Mason is the quintessential cowboy through and through. He’s polite, gentlemanly, and falls head over heels for Tessa. He also seems to live by a certain creed and moral code, which means he loathes liars…
Uh oh.
Yes, trouble is brewing. Love can make us do stupid things, but it can also make us step up and do something we didn’t think we could, which is the best part of the story. Life is full of mistakes and conflicts, but it’s important to fight through it, because that one special person makes it all worthwhile.
I really liked the characters in this one. The momentum and pacing dragged in a few places, but overall this a very solid romance novel. There’s a little something for everyone in this one, from humor, an adorable pet, a few emotional moments, and a little steam, along with all that romance, plus the ending is just too cute!!
Contemporary romance lovers can’t go wrong with this one. ...more

Will Finn and Lane be able to meet halfway to make their relationship work or will one have to move on without the other?
I enjoyed watching Finn and Lane work through their thorny issues and realize the depth of their feelings for each other and the full potential of their relationship. The emotional level is deep, but the banter is mostly light, which made the book well rounded and balanced.
If you are looking for a mature, but fun and sensual contemporary western romance, ‘Slow Burn Cowboy’ should satisfy your craving.

Heart of a Cowboy: Creed’s Honor/Unforgiven by Linda Lael Miller and B.J. Daniels is a 2017 Harlequin Books publication.
For the record, there are twoHeart of a Cowboy: Creed’s Honor/Unforgiven by Linda Lael Miller and B.J. Daniels is a 2017 Harlequin Books publication.
For the record, there are two complete novels here, both of which are reissues.
The first book is ‘Creed’s Honor’ by Linda Lael Miller. This book was originally published in 2011 and the sixth installment in Miller’s wildly popular ‘Montana Creeds’ series.
Tricia is from the city, but has returned to Lonesome Bend, a place she once spent her summers, to sell her dad’s properties after he passed away. Her beloved great grandmother is doing a little sideline matchmaking though, in hopes that Tricia will dump her fiancé and discover what a terrific guy Conner Creed happens to be.
Conner Creed runs a ranch, although it wasn’t exactly what he always wanted to do, while his brother lived the freestyle life on the rodeo circuit. But, when his twin returns home, hoping to take part in running the ranch, old resentments resurface.
But, when Connor meets Tricia, he finds a kindred spirit, but once Tricia finds a buyer for her father’s property, she intends to return to her big city life. Can Connor convince her to stay?
Anyone following my reviews knows I am a huge fan of Miller’s work, but since I only discovered her a few years back, I haven’t come close to reading all her material. But, I try to fit both the old and the new into my reading schedule whenever I can.
Luckily, this book caught my attention in the Overdrive library. Although this is the sixth book in the series, it can be read as a standalone.
This installment is not really the best representation of Miller’s work, it is still enjoyable, with plenty of conflict and family drama to keep you invested in the story.
The romance is a slow burn, with a great deal of build up before the fireworks explode. After that, things felt a little rushed up, so while I liked Connor and Tricia individually, their romance didn’t sparkle and shine quite the way I had hoped.
While any book by Linda Lael Miller is a cut above, in my experience, this one didn’t quite hit the mark, for me.
Still, it wasn’t a bad way to spend a nice quiet afternoon.

The second book is ‘Unforgiven’ by B.J. Daniels
This book was originally published in 2012 and is the first book in the ‘Beartooth, Montana’ series.
This story was an unexpected surprise. I checked this book out of the library without realizing this book was part of the deal. I thought it was would read much the same way Miller’s book had, which was pure contemporary romance, but this story is a mystery/ romantic suspense novel and you know love, love, love romantic suspense.
Destry and Rylan were lovers back in high school and the relationship was serious enough that they planned on having a future together.
But, when Rylan’s sister was killed, Destry’s brother became the prime suspect, it effectively ended their relationship.
Now, Rylan has returned home after years on the rodeo circuit. He has been avoiding Destry, but when new evidence is discovered in his sister’s murder case, they will have to face each other with the truth, not matter what.
Did Destry’s brother commit murder? Will the truth tear Destry and Rylan apart forever or will it set them free?
Wow, this is a really good mystery with a cold case element to it that makes it even more interesting. There is also a fair amount of family drama too.
The romance is a little edgy, since it’s obvious the couple are in love, but the family situation keeps them divided. It’s a little angsty and emotional, but the chemistry is perfect.
I haven’t read many books by this author, but I am certainly going to add more to the TBR pile after reading this one.

Overall, this book is a two for one deal you can’t go wrong with. Obviously, the second book was stronger, in my opinion, but both stories are worth checking out.

Just for the sake of clarity this is the second book in the Mojo Sheepshanks series. This two -book series has been reissued with new titles and new cover art.
I read the first book, originally titled, ‘Deadly Gamble’, several years back and loved it. However, I never got around to reading the second book. When I saw this one on Overdrive, I checked it out without even reading the description because I read everything I can by Linda Lael Miller.
But, when I realized I had the second ‘Mojo’ installment I did a happy dance!! Yay!!
The book starts off on a very somber note, as Mojo attends the funeral of a murdered child. But, the thing is, the child’s ghost is Mojo’s constant companion and will be until her murderer is found out, something the newly minted detective is determined to discover, with or without the help of her boyfriend, Tucker.
To make matters worse, Tucker’s children were friends with the murder victim and are traumatized by her death, prompting him to move back in with this ex-wife temporarily, for the sake of his kids.
If that weren’t bad enough, Mojo’s sister is being blackmailed and her philandering brother-in-law is missing.
I am so happy Mojo is getting a little added time in the spotlight. I would love for Linda add more books to this paranormal romantic suspense series. It is so good!!
Mojo is a terrific character, strong, yet conflicted, determined, but vulnerable, but most of all she’s smart and compassionate and will eventually make a very good detective, especially if she continues to receive help from the other side.
The book is fast-paced, with a touch of screwball humor here and there, as well as a super sexy and steamy romance filled with just the right amount of conflict and angst. The story has heart and emotion as well as suspense and action.
I don’t know why the series stopped suddenly because there is lots of room for character and relationship growth and the ending did hint at future installments which really has my curiosity peaked.
You will want to pick up the first book, ‘Deadly Gamble’ published in 2006, or the newly released digital version of the book, ‘Arizona Wild’, before starting this one.
I highly recommend this series to lovers of paranormal romance and romantic suspense and maybe even to those who enjoy contemporary western romance.
Forever a Hero by Linda Lael Miller is a 2017 HQN Books publication.
This is the third book in the Carsons of Mustang Creek series and because LLM is Forever a Hero by Linda Lael Miller is a 2017 HQN Books publication.
This is the third book in the Carsons of Mustang Creek series and because LLM is one of my favorite authors and I really liked the first two books in this series, I couldn’t wait to dive into this one, especially after seeing the amazing response it was having on Goodreads.
But, for me personally, this one was a rare miss.
This story is centered around the youngest Carson brother, Mace, who runs a winery, and Kelly Wright, a woman from the big city, hoping to do business with Mace.
Mace finds himself coming to Kelly’s rescue for a second time in her life after she has a near fatal car accident. Things quickly escalate from there as the pair discover a chemistry between them which cannot be denied. However, their business dealings are slightly more complicated, and to add even more tension into the mix, an old nemesis is out for revenge.
Naturally, I wanted to like this book, and of course I went into it with a very positive mindset. But, for some reason, the chemistry was flat, without much romantic build-up. The business conflicts were a little mundane, but I liked the way it all worked out in the end. The suspense element was okay, but because it became a primary storyline at one point, I thought it was too predictable.
Kelly’s reluctance to commit to a relationship again was understandable, her concerns about beginning a family was realistic, but a tad generic, since times are always challenging no matter when or where you decide to raise children. However, I admired her willingness to try new things and go off script with her life and her business.
Mace was a little muted, sort of old fashioned, which is nice sometimes, but he rubbed me the wrong way on occasion. He was very good to Kelly, though, and gave her a chance to get away from an awkward career situation, and eased her troubled mind about some big key issues that had caused her to worry overmuch.
I liked the city gal falling in love with the country boy theme, and despite the lukewarm romantic buildup and predictable conflicts, the couple did compliment one another nicely.
I wish I could say I enjoyed this one as much as the first two books in the series, but it was just okay. I see I am in the minority, though, so if you have enjoyed this series so far, by all means, continue on. Linda Lael Miller is always worth the time, even though I can’t say this one was her best effort.

You know what they say about how still waters run deep. That is Drake Carson in a nutshell, so don’t let his quiet nature fool you. He is very passionate, sweet, funny, and brave, with a high moral code, and Luce is one lucky gal. I liked Luce too, and I think this couple will make a great team.
Adding to the romantic backdrop is the beautiful Wyoming scenery, and the realistic, authentic portrayal of ranch living. The adventures Drake and Luce encounter make the story exciting, with both the awe of seeing wild stallions, and facing imminent danger.

Reckless in Texas is an incredibly authentic contemporary western romance. The life on the rodeo circuit, the dangerous, but very important job of a pickup man, and the financial uncertainties, all combine to give readers an up close and personal look at this way of life. It’s very hard work, and is only glamourous for an instant. It can mean hard living, and hard loving, and holding relationships together can be a challenge.
The author captures this so well, while still giving us a sweet and sassy romance between Joe and Violet. When Joe rolls into town, he’s got an arrogance about him, thinking he is doing Violet this big favor, and he behaves so badly. But, watching Violet handle herself, seeing how she is with her son, how seriously she takes her job and how much her family cares for her, makes Joe want to be a better man.
Violet has made her share of mistakes, and is now a single mom, so overworked she meets herself coming and going. Joe has given her that feeling again… the one she needs to watch out for, because Violet tends to find herself attracted to trouble. But, Joe feels the need to show Violet how a real man treats a lady. But, will Violet be able to accept his love or will her fear overrule her heart?
I really liked how Violet was a female ‘pickup man’, and her fierce independence. She owns up to her mistakes, can laugh at herself, was pretty funny too. Her problem is learning to take different types of risks, ones involving her work and of course with her heart.
For Joe, he epitomized the cocky, bad boy cowboy at first. Oh, my goodness, have I seen that exact swagger and attitude a thousand times! So, I loved watching Joe fall for Violet and mature as a person even though he had me worried there for a while. Courting Violet was super sweet and funny, but he was actually pretty good at it. Joe helps Violet see things on a bigger and wider scale, opening up a way for her to achieve her goals and make her dreams come true.
Overall, I enjoyed Joe and Violet’s love story and will definitely read more books by this author.

The ‘Carsons of Mustang Creek’ is centered around the Carson brothers on their Wyoming ranch. The oldest brother, Slater, is a historical documentary filmmaker, with a young daughter, named Daisy. He’s single, not really looking for love, but when he meets Grace, he finds he is missing something in his life, and didn’t know it until now.
Grace is a former cop, now in the hospitality business, and raising her teenage stepson, Ryder, despite being divorced from his father. After the failure of her first marriage, Grace is not looking to make a repeat mistake. But, Slater Carson has her considering a second chance at love.
As with many ‘first in a series’ novels, I had a little trouble getting into the story at first. But, once all the characters were introduced, and the lay of the land was mapped out, the story picked up speed, which is a good thing, except it felt like we went from a slow trot to a full blown gallop, in nothing flat.
I did enjoy this story, though, and should explain that although this is pretty much a standard contemporary western romance, it also has some romantic suspense elements mixed in, as well.
When Grace catches an employee engaging in illegal activities, she must terminate him, but he's not leaving without a little payback, which awakens Slater's protective instincts.
I couldn’t help but laugh as poor Grace was literally swept off her feet, caught up a true whirlwind romance. Slater is a cool guy, not a game player, is honest, straightforward, and stable. He showed Grace how a real man behaves, and proved he is a good father, and will be a positive influence on Ryder, who really needed a steady male presence in his life.
Things do seem to happen very quickly between Slater and Grace, and although Grace fights against the inevitable, she runs out of steam pretty fast. It was so funny watching the Carsons help Slater wear her down, and put her fears to rest, too.
I loved the tight knit family atmosphere in this one and the way they all work together, and support each other. I really liked Slater, who is strong, has a dominant personality, but is not a jerk!! He may move at warp speed, but he treats Grace with respect and understands the challenges she faces and her reluctance to move too quickly, even though he hates cooling his heels or having to step back and let her handle things her way, in her own time.
By contrast, Grace is very special, especially towards Ryder. She doesn’t always like being nudged along by Slater or his family, but she grows to love them and accept them just the way they are, while still maintaining her strong independent personality.
Slater and Grace have a different approach to life’s curveballs, but, they complimented each other nicely.
Ryder’s story is sad, but he has found a nice landing spot, and is better off now than he ever could have thought possible, which really warmed my heart.
I think the Carson family series has gotten off to a pretty good start and Miller’s fans will probably like this one. I’m looking forward to Drake’s story in the upcoming ‘Always a Cowboy.”

The short story has the distinction of featuring a female bull rider, something that as forward thinking as I would like to believe I am, I don't think I would aspire to.
Naturally, Megan takes a lot of heat from the men on the rodeo circuit for daring to ride bulls, but it wasn't the disrespect of the men, or the bull riding competition that has Megan distracted. It was running into her old boyfriend, Pax, that has her struggling to maintain her focus.
Pax broke Megan's heart and never fully explained why. He felt like under the circumstances the kindest thing to do for the woman he loved was to let her go. He would only hold her back from her goals and dreams. But, it never occurred to him that Megan would take the break up so hard, that she would still be nursing a broken heart, or that his feelings for her were as strong as ever. But, the same problems they faced years ago are still staring them in the face. But, is love enough for the relationship to work?
This super short story is enjoyable enough, a nice afternoon diversion or lunch break read. However, there wasn't anything here that hasn't been done a hundred times over. It was really similar to book I just finished a week or so ago, in fact. So, while I did like the statement made that nothing is off limits for women, even the male dominated sport of bull riding, the story itself was just OK. 3 stars...more

What a wonderful heartwarming story by Maggie McGinnis! This book is part of the Whisper Creek series featuring Cole, a good looking cowboy who has walked in the shadow of his super smart brother, and Jess, a yoga instructor, and her two best friends who have married into the Driscoll family or are about to. But, Jess has yet to make the move to Whisper Creek a permanent one... yet.
But right now, Jess is in a bind as long buried secrets from the past threaten to see the light of day after all these years. Hopefully her arrival on the ranch for her friend's wedding will give Jess some time to process and hopefully keep her off the radar of some really nasty people.
But, when she finds herself once more face to face with the devastatingly handsome, Cole, she knows she will have to keep her heart under lock and key or risk, not only a broken heart, but the truth coming out about her past, revealing to everyone she is not who she claims to be.
Cole is on the verge of making a huge decision about his future on the ranch. The dynamic of things has changed since his brother married and now Cole feels like a fifth wheel and can't seem to find his niche... until Jess arrives and suddenly Cole can't seem to envision a future without Jess in it. The trouble is, he's having a very hard time convincing Jess they should be together.
I really enjoyed this sweet romance which dealt with heartbreaking situations, but allowed the past to collide with the present to free Jess up to stop hiding, to embrace her future, no matter what may come, and to make peace with the tragedy that haunts her and keeps her from being able to commit to Cole.
While Cole is strong, supportive, and ready to fight for the lady he loves, I was most proud of Jess for taking the initiative and thus taking control of her life. She has lived in fear long enough and it was time to face the music once and for all. The issues that keep Jess from going all in with Cole are very emotional, but where there is love, there is a way to work out our problems. Things may not always be fairytale perfect, but this strong, mature couple with love in their corner, can make up their own cowboy fairytale and invent their own version of Happy Ever After! I see that many readersCowboy Romance 12 Pack is a Story Ink LLC publication. I was provided a copy for this box set in conjunction with a blog tour.
I see that many readers reviewed one book in this set and that is wise. Writing twelve reviews here is not really feasible so I'm going to leave a review for:
Her Uniform Cowboy by Donna Michaels Brandi is from Pennsylvania and is not well versed on the ways of cowboys and Texans. She rubs the Sheriff, Kade Dalton the wrong way or may it's the other way around. Brandi has vowed to never become involved with a man who is part of the guard because of how her last relationship turned out. But, everyone around them can see the two of them are smitten with one another, and it's only a matter of time before they give in the passion simmering underneath the surface.
I love military heroes and cowboys so the combination of the two in one book is a sure fire winner. Kade carrying around a lot of baggage and guilt in regards to his military service. He doesn't want a relationship with a woman right now because his head isn't one straight. Brandi is still holding a grudge about men in the guard, but soon finds out how fragile life can be. Kade's issues are pretty serious and I love the way Brandi didn't just give up on him. Kade was not easy to live with but with Brandi's love and patience he slowly begins to see the way to getting his life back on track. This couple will still have some hurdles to deal with, but their strong and committed love will see them through. 4 stars
