I read the synopsis of this book, which adequately sets the stage and entices the reader to play along, but it didn't truly prepare me for the experience or the journey I was about to embark on.
Lighthouses are fascinating to me. As they stand tall and regal against the isolated, lonely waves, the backdrop tempts the imagination and is the source of countless works of art, sketches and coffee table books, and calendars. But, we rarely think of the lighthouse keeper up there performing such a solitary job.
This book takes the reader exactly to that location, on the coast of New England, on an especially cold, bitter night, where our vigilant keeper discovers a pack of letters left behind by his predecessor.
Reading these letters, written by Enoch S. Soule, the keeper realizes they are the author’s written recordings, addressed to his wife, of his somnambulist dreams, which happen to be amazing, fantastical, and mind blowing, prompting the keeper to question Soule's sanity.
Upon closer inspection, the reader will no doubt find a world of symbolism, creativity, and vivid imagery and a wide- open imagination, as you travel along inside Soule’s world of… dreams? Hallucinations? Dementia? …. Or something even more incredible… something metaphysical perhaps?
I have to confess, I loved reading the dream sequences. I especially latched onto the raven, who appears on more than one occasion, but I did not miss other timeless pointers which traveled through pop culture, music, art, as well as other profound and influential works of literature.
The current keeper, is the solid base the story is built around, but he remains enigmatic, since we are totally locked out of his inner thought processes. The other constant is the lighthouse, the sturdy edifice that houses the keeper, insulatating him from any distraction, holding him hostage inside his palpable loneliness, while he immerses himself in Enoch’s travels, because without that atmospheric setting, the focus and effect would have suffered.
I was incredibly impressed with the imaginative, and mesmerizing prose of the author whose writing is extraordinarily eloquent. He certainly captures the spirit and essence of Poe, among others, but Poe’s influence is the most prominent. This is a very unconventional novel, which leaves much room for various interpretations.
The dreams are like vignettes, in a way, and are individual stories in and unto themselves, some of which really make quite an impression.
I think each person who reads this book will come away with a feeling unique only to them, but can also share the same opinions and experiences that others enjoyed, and could make for some lively debate. speculation, or commentary.
Overall, this is an impressive, imaginative, novel that will challenge your mind and senses, leaving you with much to think about. I think this is one of those novels that you’ll want to keep on your bookshelf to experience and savor again another day.

This latest installment in the ‘Bravo’ series starts off with a bang… literally!
Are there real shotgun weddings anymore? James Bravo discovers the answer to that question the hard way after he is tied to a chair and held at gunpoint by Addie Kenwright’s grandfather, a man who is tired of seeing the women in his family abandoned by men, left to raise their babies alone. So when he notices Addie experiencing the symptoms of pregnancy he aims to make sure the father steps up and does the right thing by Addie and the baby.
But, is the James the baby daddy?
Addie has sworn off men forever after having her heart broken too many times. But, with her PawPaw dying, she has to do whatever it takes to get him to fight for his life. So, although James is not the father of her child she agrees to marry him, but will they will only be together long enough for grandfather to fully recover.
Will that be long enough for James to convince Addie to give love one more try?
This story is a terrific addition to this series. It’s cute, sweet, with just the right amount of spice. I loved James from start to finish. He is SO nice, patient, kind, and absolutely dreamy! Addie? Well, if her grandfather was stubborn, then Addie was cut from the same cloth. She was so obstinate at times, I wondered how James managed to stay so calm. But… love is patient, right?
PawPaw was a hoot, a great character with a big heart, who loved his granddaughters, and only wanted them to be happy, even if his methods of helping them were a little… unorthodox.
The moral to the story is a good one- never give up on love. Everybody plays the fool sometimes, but the right person is out there. Sometimes you have to have a little more faith, but love will always find you.
Overall, I really enjoyed this one, and I think it’s one of the best books in the series that I have read.

The topic of this book comes at a timely fashion, since many of us have politics in our minds at the moment. In this case, the author explores the notorious opposition between the Tories and the Whigs.
The intelligent and beautiful Lady Margaret supports her father’s Tory party and her hosting duties have not gone unnoticed. She enjoys her role, which keeps her busy and her mind off the tragic loss of her husband. She has no intention of remarrying, but feels restless. The chance meeting with a political rival, Giles Hadley, awakens Margaret’s senses, which have lain dormant for far too long.
Giles is a Viscount, who will eventually inherit his father’s title, but, doesn’t believe marriage is for him due to the immense scandal surrounding his parent’s marriage, which was very sad. However, when the Lady Margaret suggests they enter into a liaison, Giles finds himself rethinking his position on that subject.
However, Giles’ half-brother is more suited to Lady Margaret due to their like-minded political stance, and he is aggressively pursuing her. Can Giles win the lady’s heart despite their differences? Can he convince her their torrid affair has deeper possibilities?
This story starts off on a slightly humorous and charming note, with the sudden and unexpected introduction Giles and Margaret have to one another, and the instant sparks that fly between them. I loved Margaret’s attitude and her refusal to obey certain protocol when it came to entering into a dalliance with Giles. She knew what she wanted and she pursued it, while most ladies in this time period would never have even entertained such a thought. Although, Margaret is a delightful and gregarious character, in the beginning she has an aura of sadness surrounding her. However, Giles will soon have her feeling the strength to heal and will give her a reason to want to move forward at long last.
Giles’ story was very sad, indeed, and I was happy to see him finally receive the validation he deserves. It was so fun watching him react to Margaret and seeing him fall completely under her spell. He never knew what hit him.
Often times I find that in the beginning of a book, I struggle with one or sometimes both the protagonist, but in this case, I loved them both immediately and only grew to like them more as the story progressed. However, this story has a bit of a bite to it, with a romantic suspense element tossed into the mix. I found myself holding my breath as things got a little intense a time or two.
I don’t know if it was just me, but I think this story is just a little saucier that some I’ve read from this author, but I thought it worked in this case because we aren’t dealing with an innocent virgin, but with two consenting adults who agree to a ‘no strings attached’ arrangement. However, the tension does build a little at a time, tantalizing and teasing the reader.
Overall, this an easy read, moving at a steady pace, with a few heart pounding moments, and a healing and heartwarming family side story, and of course the unlikely romance between two people with opposing views who wind up falling in love, giving us a sweet and spicy romance that will leave you smiling at the end.

A Kindled Winter is a poignant tale set against the backdrop of the Christmas season, which can be one of the most difficult times of the year for some people, but can also be the most uplifting and heartwarming.
This story will take you on a journey with one couple who go from the depths of despair to finding a new beginning, faith, hope and love.
This story begins with a near tragedy, with Jeseca wrecking her car and finding herself stranded during a winter storm.
Dr. David Drake finds himself sheltering Jeseca after she comes across his cottage seeking refuge and help. With the lines down, and the storm showing no signs of letting up, Jeseca becomes his unexpected Christmas guest.
In a short frame of time these two lost and lonely souls will open up a whole new world for one another. But, before they can move forward the past must be laid to rest so that real healing can begin.
No doubt, Jeseca has suffered hardships and heartbreak in her life, but while still carrying around great burdens and sadness, her approach to life is a far cry from the way David has chosen to deal with his pain. This difference in personalities could create conflict, but instead Jeseca's openness and acceptance of him helps to bring David out of his self imposed exile.
This story is very emotional and deals with some very tragic situations. David's pain, literally jumps off the page and squeezes your heart. I was drawn to him right away, but I also dreaded the details that have to come out about his life because I knew I'd probably do the ugly cry.
Jeseca's story was equally compelling and her loss is just as deep, and very complex. Still, she shows an inner strength that keeps her moving onward with a lively and mischievous personality. I really liked her, (and not just because she likes Jane Eyre), and felt she was perfect for the insular David.
Despite the intense feelings of sadness and loss, the chemistry between David and Jeseca is pitch perfect. They complement one another wonderfully, and what starts off as an oppressive and gloomy atmosphere, slowly changes to one of hope and healing. Before you know it, you will find your heart filled with warmth and peace and happiness for this couple who miraculously found one another on a dark and stormy night.
This is a unique romantic tale, filled with a well of powerful emotions that sets it apart from the usual holiday fare. ...more

“Where now is the warrior? Where is the warhorse? Bestowal of treasure, and sharing of feast? Alas! The bright ale-cup, the mail-clad warrior, The prince in his splendor---- those days are long sped In the night of the past, as if they had never been!”
From the Anglo- Saxon poem: The Wanderer
Rouge Knight is the second book in the Medieval Warriors series, and gets off to a rousing start and builds upward to a stunning and epic conclusion.
Emma is outraged over the carnage and cruelty she has witnessed from the Normans, fully backing her father's alliance with the Danes, who have begun an uprising against King William.
But, it is a French Knight that will come to Emma's aid on more than one occasion, and therefore finds herself in the most heart wrenching and precarious situations one could possibly imagine.
Geoffroi is loyal to William, but sees the same over the top cruelty Emma does. But, he never suspects that Emma is caught in the cross hairs, and her secret could tear apart all the love and trust between them if it ever came to light. Eventually, Emma will have to take a stand. But, which side will she take?
Emma is a strong female protagonist, loyal to her family, but in love with a man who, while very honorable, plays for the other side. I am sure that this happens in real life in any war. It's often a 'no win' situation, and at times, Geoffroi, detested what his fellow warriors did in the name of the king.
So, we have a little bit of forbidden love, a fierce uprising, and divided loyalties, mixed with intrigue and adventure, that makes this a deeply layered tale, one that will stir up your emotions, have your heart racing and then melting.
When historical romance novelist these days use the excuse of “I'm a romance writer, not a historian”, to push aside any inaccuracies or expansive liberties they take, I say “Bah!”
I challenge them to read any novel written by Regan Walker, to get an idea of how to write a great romance within the historical fiction context. Great and epic romances are often told amid the backdrop of real events or are based on real people.
A historical romance can be every bit as sensual, romantic, and filled with passion, and still have accuracy, authenticity, and realistic historical details, without offending the sensibilities of the modern reader.
Regan Walker always goes the extra mile to bring her stories to life, igniting the imagination, transporting you into a long ago era that is endlessly fascinating and absolutely riveting. The writing is excellent, the research impeccable, and the love story is epic. You can't ask for more than that. ...more

Wow, Christine really added some red hot spices to the recipe in this one!
Quinn Bravo was the guy with a 'bad boy' reputation and Chloe was burdened with the 'good girl' image. Because of these perceptions and the expectations from others, Chloe kept her attraction to Quinn a secret while they were teenagers.
Now both Quinn and Chloe have returned home, Quinn as a single father, and Chloe is trying to put her life back in order after escaping an abusive marriage. One evening, they discovered they were neighbors and the sparks flew, leading to a heated night of passion. However, Chloe is determined to leave it as a one and done situation, but Quinn would like nothing more than to date Chloe properly and would not object to a long term relationship with her. But, even if he can talk Chloe into giving him a chance, outside forces seem determined to drive a wedge between them.
The chemistry between Chloe and Quinn is never in doubt. They went from zero to a hundred in no time flat! Usually, when this happens in a romance novel I'm a little let down. I'm one of those slow burn types who enjoy a titillating build up. It's part of what keeps me turning the pages, so when Chloe and Quinn hit the sheets in record time, I wondered what the author was thinking.
As it turns out, most of this story is centered around Chloe and her struggle to snatch control of her life away from her domineering and manipulative mother and ex-husband. On the surface, it would appear Chloe has everything a woman could want, but nothing could be further from the truth. Her mother likes to gloat and brag about how her daughter turned out, how well she had married, and what a charmed life she led. She was so entrenched in this make believe world, she couldn't accept that it wasn't the fairytale she made it out to be.
Now, Chloe is dating Quinn, a man who doesn't measure up to her mother's high standards. To complicate matters more, Chloe'e ex-husband, now re-married, has suddenly decided he wants to make contact with Chloe again. Obviously, the man is dangerous, so Quinn wants to step in and protect Chloe. This is the only real conflict between the couple, since Chloe would rather handle the situation with her ex on her own terms.
Quinn's character isn't as fleshed out and the back story with his daughter is glossed over a great deal. Still, it would seem Quinn's role here is to be a stable influence while Chloe's life is in all this turmoil. The couple is already committed to one another by the half way mark in the book, but they still have lots of sexy time moments, this being one of the steamiest novels from the author I have read in a while.
The author took a bit of an unconventional approach with this one, and I will admit to being a little taken aback by it initially. But, now that I've mulled it over a while, I think I understand what the author was trying to achieve. This book could very easily fall into the chick-lit or women's fiction genre, despite the explicit sex. Although Chloe and her mother have a good long heart to heart, I think some real professional help would be in order, and that situation will not be an easy fix, even if some progress is made.
The most important thing, in the end ,though, was that Quinn and Chloe are together and will finally have their HEA.

When Nic arrives in Paradise Island on an acquisitions assignment he encounters a dirty dog running lose and in need of rescue. Arriving at the Paradise Animal clinic, Nic meets Jillian, the vet technician and the two become acquainted.
But, the sweet connection they made was shattered in an instant when Jillian finds out Nic is about to buy the Sandpiper Inn and her small town community will never be the same again.
I love stories that feature animals or pets, and that is what drew me to this book initially. Murphy is a border collie with an elderly owner, and is in need of some special help, which Jillian and Nic are more than happy to give him, and he returns the favor with panache.
While the small town girl pitted against the rich powerful city boy is not exactly a unique trope, exploring the themes of family, friends, big businesses moving into small communities and wiping out all the charm and close knit sense of family one feels in that environment, gives this one a little more depth. I cheered Jillian on, was firmly in her corner, even though at times I thought she became a little overwrought. I liked her fight and determination and how she stuck to her principles, even if it came at a very high price.
Nic is the character who, while nice enough, was the one who has the most to learn and must make some pretty difficult choices. While it's hard to feel sorry for people in Nic's situation, I did understand the huge risk he was taking, but it was good to see him make a stand and be his own man, not to mention doing what is right. So, although I didn't dislike him, he did have to grow on me a little, but as his character developed so did my respect for him.
The steam level in this one is very low, but it seemed to fit this couple perfectly and so I was fine with it.
If I have my facts straight, this is a debut novel for this author and if that's correct then she is off to a solid start. The characters were defined, even Murphy, who of course is the star of the whole show!
I believe this book was intended to be a sweet, light and fun read and it does what is set out to accomplish. This is a quick, easy read, that will lift your spirits and leave you smiling!

“A Lover's Lemonade”, a “Blushing Bride” are just a few of the offerings on a special drink menu at the fantasy island resort that Laney should have been enjoying on her honeymoon, which turned out to be a vacation for one.
Laney, an ER trauma doctor, is going through a very difficult period in her life after breaking up with her fiance, and losing her job. So, she arrives at Fantasy Island alone, but is a little bit clueless about what goes one there. Wink. Wink. Until she meets the resort's Massuer , Gray.
Gray, a SEAL, is at the resort on an undercover mission. The last thing he expected was to find himself very attracted to one of his clients. The ethical issues are in a gray area, but when one of his colleagues, Ashley, pushes him to toward the very attractive doctor, for a little short term fantasy sharing, he puts aside any reservations he may have had.
“It's sex...not rocket science. If you're interested, you tell the guy. Or, better yet, you show him. Most of them need the dots connected for them and that's where the drinks menu comes in. You point him toward your fantasy du jour and skip the awkward stage where he's trying to figure out what you like, and you're tying to figure out to politely tell him it takes a little more for you than a little breast groping and rub-a dub-dub.”
A little fun in the sun at fantasy island is just what Laney needs, but once her time at the resort is up she and Gray will go their separate ways because fantasies are just that… fantasies , right???
The SEAL storyline and the undercover mission thing was a wee bit outlandish, but in my opinion the story was supposed to fun, not taken too seriously, nor weighted down with heavy drama or high emotional intensity. This is a light, escapist type read, for adults only, and taken in the right context, the book is very entertaining and was fun read. This one falls somewhere in between spicy and erotic and is all about acting out one's fantasies, but of course, that could be a dangerous game, because like Laney and Gray soon discovered, those pesky feelings could complicate things, giving them ideas about playing out those fantasies for a lifetime.

A High seas adventure with romance at the ship's helm!
It as been a very, very long time since I have read a romance set at sea and I must admit I have missed these highly entertaining tales of romantic adventure.
Claire Donet was once an adventurous, lively, mischievous, and spirited girl until a tragic event at her convent school doused the fire in her soul. Now Claire is much more serious, ridden by guilt, and determined to become a nun.
However, if her father has any say in the matter, he will see to it she marries the man he has chosen for her. But, before either step can be taken, Simon Powell thwarts them both by kidnapping the innocent Claire and declaring he will hold her captive until he gets back what is his.
Simon is a British Privateer whose schooner was taken by Claire's father, a notorious pirate. Having been sent away to convent school after her mother's death, Claire is totally oblivious about her father's life.
Soon she finds herself torn between her French heritage, her father, and Simon, “The Golden One” as the revolutionary war continues to rage. With each passing day she gains more and more respect for Simon and begins to fall in love with him, despite the circumstances.
Simon's one objective is to get back his schooner and once that goal is accomplished he will turn Claire back over to her father. But, he will do so reluctantly, for he will miss her terribly. However, his feelings for her are forbidden and Claire has already committed herself to the convent.
Are Claire and Simon really two ships that pass in the night? Star crossed lovers? Will Claire really join the convent or will she marry the man her father has picked for her? Or… will Simon refuse to let her go?
The revolutionary war presented from the British and France perspective was a unique spin, and looking at it from that angle gave me a new outlook and made for some titillating suspense.
I loved Simon! He is the perfect romantic hero, protecting Claire by honoring her with his respect, and being the perfect gentleman, most of the time. () He is fierce, but kind and loyal and knows his mind.
Claire is a lady, highly principled, sympathetic, but strong, and sensitive. She is a bit more conflicted, but her character develops very nicely as the story progresses, and I was proud to see some of her fire rekindled by Simon.
One thing I really appreciate about Regan Walker is her dedicated research and attention to detail. How I wish all historical romance authors took the time to do this! There is no substitute for authenticity when reading historical fiction, because the dress, the conduct, vernacular and dialogue is what sweeps me into the past, literally bringing the pages to life.
What fun it is to follow along on the high seas, with swashbuckling adventure, danger, epic romance, intrigue, action and suspense! I loved every minute of this fast paced novel. This story was full of surprises and the secondary characters were well drawn adding another layer of depth. This was a romantic, exciting and fun read!
As always Regan Walker has gone all out for her readers by putting together maps, a list of characters for reference, and she has put together a Pinterest board dedicated to this novel, which you simply must see to believe. ( https://www.pinterest.com/reganwalker...)

Emily is in love iEarth to Emily by Pamela Fagan Hutchins is a 2015 publication. I was provided a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Emily is in love in her boss, Jack, but it's complicated. Emily is also in love with Betsy, a young girl she has set her heart and hopes on adopting, but it's complicated.
So, as the second book in the “Emily” series launches, we see Emily working her buns off trying to get all her ducks in a row so she can give Betsy her forever home. But, naturally life is erratic and more than one obstacle stands in her way.... things like two runaway kids, a murder, and Betsy's foster parents, who are intent on making Emily look bad. Then there are her feelings for the handsome defense attorney she works for. While things got kind of weird between them at one time, Betsy still harbors hope they can overcome the past, and work things out.
First of all I have to confess I have not gotten around to reading the first book in this series- “Heaven to Betsy”. ( I do have the book, and it's embarrassing to admit it's been lingering on my top twenty list for quite some time, but my review deadlines have been brutal, so I kept having to put it aside)
So, I have to say I highly recommend reading the first book before starting this one, but it's not absolutely necessary, since you can easily grasp the situation. I do intend to go back and get caught up, so I know all the particulars about how Emily met Betsy and learn all the specifics about Jack leading up this point.
Having said all that, I found this book to be a very fast paced read, with every element you need to make up a good story. We have mystery and suspense, romance and humor all mixed together with a few heart tugging emotional moments to top things off.
There is never a dull moment in this book with several plot lines going on at once. The characters are charming, real, funny, and at times an enigma. Jack is a guy who apparently likes to keep information close to his vest, and I never quite knew what he was thinking or how he was feeling.
Emily however, was quite forthcoming with her feelings and emotions and of course this makes her character easy for us ladies to relate to and sympathize with. She is optimistic, with a strong moral code she lives by, but underneath her quiet strength, there is a palpable yearning that broke my heart.
Naturally, any time we deal with children who are need, the emotions run high and Emily finds herself in between a rock and a hard place trying to help two teens without ruining her own chance of becoming a parent. I also felt outrage at Betsy's foster parents and the below the belt tactics they pulled on Emily who will undoubtedly make a great mom.
Then there is the romance. Again, Jack drops hints along the way, here and there, that he would like to settle some things between himself and Emily, but there are huge revelations they will have to tackle and come to terms with before they can move forward. Thankfully, we see some real progress before all is said and done.
The dialogue is crisp, sharp, poignant at times, with all the characters, even the minor ones, being well defined.
Overall, this is a fast and easy read, a solid action packed romantic suspense novel with a little something in it for everyone. This one gets 4 stars. ...more

When we last touched base Bad Medicine by Caroline Fardig is a 2015 publication. I was provided a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
When we last touched base with Lizzie Hart, she managed to survive after being drawn into an investigation involving a Wicca coven, and made a few life long friends in the process, but sadly, she lost her boyfriend, Blake, when he discovers she kept vital information from him.
Now, Lizzie is trying to move on with her life as an investigative reporter, in the small town of Liberty, which is hard because she still has to work with Blake, who is kind of hostile towards her now, not to mention the other comical work place issues she has always had to deal with.
But, when she is out with the girls one night, she sees her chiropractor, Lydia, who is new in town, out with Jason, a married man whose wife just had a baby. Not long after that, Jason is found dead, allegedly overdosing on pills. But, Jason's death is only the beginning as it seems any man who rubs elbows with Lydia dies, which is bad enough, but it seems Blake could be the next guy on Lydia's radar. Can Lizzie keep Blake from becoming the next victim?
Caroline Fardig is really hitting her stride now, as each installment in this series has gotten better. She does an outstanding job on this one in particular. Lizzie once more finds herself in a love triangle, as Blake finally opens up about their break up, but a super sexy detective, Brody Callahan, expresses interest in becoming involved with Lizzie on a personal level, all while warning her off the investigation surrounding the mysterious deaths of several men recently, which of course she ignores.
“Wait. What am I doing? My brain finally decides to join the party, and it's not amused. I can't be kissing Brody Callahan! He's mean, and he arrested me. And he took my clothes off without my permission. Maybe if I'm lucky I can get him to do it again. No! I can't think that. Must. Quit. Kissing. Him.”
The mystery isn't exactly a mystery since it's plain from the get go who our culprit is, it's just a matter of proving it, and understanding the motive behind the killings, and preventing more deaths. However, that knowledge does nothing to dampen the suspense level in the story and there are a few stunning big reveals and plot twist before all is said and done, and of course there is plenty of action as well.
The dialogue is super sharp, crisp, witty, and laugh out loud funny at times. Lizzie's character grows and learns with each new installment, but never loses her edge. Blake's character growth really stands out in this one, and while I was super ticked off at him after the way he ended things with Lizzie, he does impress me in this story and I had to grudgingly admit he was a pretty good guy at the end of the day.
I'm not sure, it's just a vibe I picked up on, but this could be the last book in this series or trilogy. If so, I will truly miss Lizzie Hart, and I do hope she will be back to solve more mysteries and prevent more crime in Liberty, but if this is the last one, I can say it ended on solid footing with the knowledge that things may not always be perfect for Lizzie, but the important things in her life are in place and I feel confident her future will be bright.
If you love light romantic comedy, or cozy mysteries, or a combination of the two you really need to check out this series. While the mystery is always compelling, it's Lizzie's personal relationships that draws the reader in, and with that in mind I would strong recommend reading the books in order, so you can fully appreciate the character's growth and feel the satisfaction in seeing things turn out the way the way you hoped.

In this Madison's Song by Christine Amsden is a 2015 Twilight Books publication. I was provided a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
In this all new book by the author of the Cassie Scot YA Paranormal detective series, we explore the aftermath of Madison's discovery of her true parentage, her break up with Nicolas, various betrayals, and her adjustment to being half sister to Evan.
If that weren't bad enough, she is having nightmares regarding a close encounter with a werewolf named Scott. Things go from bad to worse when her brother Clinton is bitten by a werewolf, and Madison must do whatever is necessary to save him, even it means another face to face encounter with Scott.
I loved the paranormal spin on the shapeshifter/werewolf trope because of the science fiction tint the author added into it. It makes perfect sense that if a pack of werewolves were outed someone would get the bright idea of trying to create that phenomenon in lab. What could possibly go wrong? Sadly, Clinton, an innocent in all of this, will find out all the ways such an experiment could go awry.
The only good thing to come out of such a situation was Madison's forced contact with Scott and Evan which will lead her to address some repressed emotions, admit to some feelings and fears she has been holding onto, and opening the door for a possible romance.
Madison is a strong young lady, but suffers from insecurities and self doubt, which makes her easy to relate to. She is loyal and honorable and even brings out the best in Evan, who is still a conflicted man. Scott is also a person who will show deep character development and will face his guilt while maintaining his role as pack leader, often having to make very difficult choices.
The story has lots of action-adventure, some tense suspenseful moments, and a sweet romance, equally balanced, is fast paced and easy to read.
For those of you who are familiar with the Cassie Scot series, you will find a few familiar faces here which was fun, and of course you know Madison is Cassie's good friend. If you haven't read the first series, no worries, this book is a stand alone, but it is connected to previous series and could be defined as a companion to the it, and does explore the aftermath of events previously explored. So, I do strongly recommend reading the Cassie Scot series in order to understand how Madison got to this point, but it's not absolutely necessary in order to enjoy this book.
This book is a little edgier than what I am used from this author, and I really liked the darker tone this one had, and while still YA /NA, it has an adult feel to it making this one enjoyable for anyone of any age group.
I loved how everything was wrapped up! This book could either stand on it's own or be the start of a new series. Christine's writing style and the atmosphere she creates in her books is unique and draws the reader into the story and hold them there. If you enjoy paranormal romance and shifters you will certainly want to invest in this series. ...more

If you follow my reviews you have heard me say time again how much I love friends to lovers stories and I never grow tired of them. This one, though, has a unique spin on it when Jordyn and Will meet one another at a wedding after years of separation. Jordyn has now grown into a beautiful young lady and Will has recently built a ranch at Rust Creek Falls. But, when they imbibe some really strong punch at the reception, they wake up the next morning horrified to discover they are married, with a license to prove it. So, of course they get legal advice only to discover it won't be as easy to dissolve the marriage as one might think. So, there's nothing they can really do except stay married for a few months, which proves to be more of a challenge than they bargained for.
This is a delightful story, and it was so fun to watch these two trying to convince everyone the marriage took place by mutual consent and they were in love. Will fights his very real attraction to Jordyn hard and to keep from ruining her innocence he could be rather abrupt and kind of mean. But, what started off as a pack of lies, soon began to develop into something else. So, Will finally stops fighting his feelings, but Jordyn has plans and being married will prevent her from pursuing her dreams. Can Will convince her to stay married or will he have to bow out gracefully?
You will love watching this couple fall in love, struggle to accept that reality, then finally give in to what has been there all along. I loved the push/ pull in the relationship, the banter, the dialogue and the chemistry sizzles between this couple. The HEA was just right and left me with a smile on my face. If you like contemporary western, with super sexy ranchers, friends to lovers stories and pure romance, this one will not disappoint. 4 stars...more

This is the secoLady Faith Takes a Leap by Maggi Anderson is a 2015 publication. I was provided a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This is the second story in the Baxendale Sisters series and can be read as a stand alone.
Now that her half sister, Honor, has married and settled down, Lady Faith is now being pressured by her father to find a husband. But, Faith has only ever loved one man...Vaughn Winborne. The problem is, Vaughn is a rogue, a man with a cash flow problem and a bad reputation. So, this puts him off the table as far as Faith's father is concerned. While Faith is loathe to marry a man she does not love, it appears she may have no other choice because her father has run out of patience with her constantly turning away suitors. Are Faith and Vaughn destined to be star crossed lovers or will fate intervene and save the day?
This is a novella length story, so it would be a great book to read on your lunch break. The set up was a bit lengthy and the story started to drag around the midway point, and I was starting to wonder if anything more interesting was going to happen and if so, could we please get on with it. I have to say I was surprised by the developments that took place in the last few chapters. Suddenly, the predictable tried and true historical romance trope changed over to one of fast paced danger and intrigue.
The underlying theme is “love at first sight” and even if you don't think it's real, this story may give you pause, because Lady Faith has loved Vaughn since she first laid eyes on him and even though she tried to put him out of her mind and convince herself her feelings for him were just “a crush”, the heart clearly thought otherwise.
I enjoyed the banter between Faith and Vaughn, which was sharp, witty and at times poignant. These two have a wonderful chemistry between them, and I loved their unconventional HEA.
Overall, this is a delightful and fun romance and a pleasant light read. 3.5 stars ...more

Cynthia Courtland is a business professional being plagued by dark erotic dreams to the point of distraction. Who is the man she thinks of as “Old World Man” and why has he invaded her sleep?
Dream walkers are always fascinating to read about, and while it seems kind of disturbingly intrusive, it also has as an erotic pull, but also a way for otherworldly beings to communicate to people when needed. This dream walker, we will later learn, has good reason for stalking, for lack of a better term, Cynthia in her dreams. She could be in danger and as her protector he needs to keep her up to speed. But, an unexpected development causes Gabe's plans to go awry. and now Cynthia doesn't know what or who is real or a part of her dream. Is Gabe a real person? Her guardian angel? Or something else entirely?
I thought this story got off to a good start, but I got a bit confused by the switch from dream to reality and then the sudden plot twist that changed the dynamic yet again. It was too short of a story for all these abrupt changes that took place without much explanation. Cynthia does a great job of rolling with the punches and accepting that some kind of paranormal occurrence is taking place in her life, and it's for her safety. Her character does show growth and I was happy to see things work out for her career wise. Gabe was a mystery since he did the complete opposite of what we would want to see happen in a character, by starting off strong, but instead of growth, he actually becomes someone I didn't trust and I didn't like his distracting Cynthia to avoid telling her the truth, because she had trusted him and deserved better than a relationship built on a lie.
There were some problems with the outline of the story making it unclear at times if Cynthia was still dreaming or if the scene was actually taking place. There were several loose ends and the mystery was never explained to my satisfaction.
The explanation for Gabe's hot and cold treatment of Cynthia was weak, and the explanation of his new job, if you will was so rushed through I didn't quite understand it. So, the story ended up on a uneven note for me since I felt Cynthia deserved more of an explanation than she got, and Gabe was underestimating a woman who has proven herself to be quite capable and open to paranormal events.
So, hopefully, the author will perhaps tighten up this novella just a little bit, and then use it as an introduction to a full length novel at some point or perhaps make into an e-series, which sounds like fun.
Overall the author did create a fantasy dreamlike state that was atmospheric, slightly erotic and sensual, which shows skill as a writer. A firmer outline, some organization, and perhaps a little more stability with the characters would go a long way toward firming the story up and making read more smoothly. This is not a bad little lunch break read, and if you like paranormal romance with some steamy bits included, you might find this one to your liking. 2.5 stars ...more

I have read books by this author in the past, and was always impressed with her work, which is often literary in nature, with a more serious tone to them. So, as I began this book, I could tell right way the author had decided to branch out and show another side of her personality... humor, allegory, wit and tongue in cheek sarcasm are peppered all through this dark psychological super hero style novel. This is one of the most unique stories I have read in a long while and I was utterly mesmerized by it.
Just like Bruce Wayne, in the Batman graphic novels, Billie's parents were killed in a senseless crime, which has remained unsolved, and Billie, only eleven years old at the time, lost a leg in the melee. As an adult, Billie works as a proofreader, but aspires to become a book editor. While wielding her red pen, both literally and figuratively, Billie fantasizes about retribution and vigilante justice. But, somehow, someway, Billie's imaginary edits are becoming a reality. Billie will have to figure out how this unknown personal crusader of vigilante justice is pulling this off , and in the process may very well find a way to make peace with the past once and for all.
If you have any kind of working knowledge of the publishing world, editing or proofreading, you will find yourself laughing out loud at Billie's musings. The writing here is crisp, sharp, and spot on. This story is very multi-layered and since I have a thing for dark humor and quirky characters this one was right up my alley.
Obvious parallels between Batman are woven inside Billie's story as she could truly relate to this tale of an unsolved crime involving her parents and the drive to find the killer and see justice done. But, Billie's tale is just a little bit more twisted, and while Batman is pretty dark stuff, this story takes it a step further, or maybe several steps further. I will admit I don't read graphic novels and other than being a big Batman fan myself, and having a son who is a HUGE Dark Knight enthusiast, I really am not a fan of any of the other superhero comics or big budget movies. However, I will go out on a limb and say I do think if you like graphic novels you will certainly enjoy the homage to the superhero genre and the imaginative way it is presented.
I only have one complaint and I hate to even bring it up, but I feel I should advise you that if graphic violence is something you have a hard time with you should know up front there are a few disturbing scenes and one scene for me was just a bit too descriptive for my taste.
For me this book was quite different from my usual fare and I hope I have gleaned from it what the author was hoping for, but it could be open to various interpretations. I think it's one of those books you can read more than once and pick up something new from it every time you read it. In fact, I've left this one in my 'favorite' folder because I want to read it more leisurely and really absorb all the various nuances of it I may have missed the first time around. ( If my schedule ever permits me to, that is)
Once again, I was impressed with Julie Frayn's ability to weave so many elements together into one cohesive story that is sure to capture your imagination and challenge your senses, and is a testament to her skill and talent as an author.
I recommend this novel to those who enjoy a good crime novel, psychological thriller, graphic novels with superhero elements, maybe even those who read fantasy novels or enjoy whimsical tales, and those who enjoy dark humor as well. 4.5 stars ...more

I was provided a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This is the first book I have read by this author so I had no idea what to expect when I got started on this one. But, the more I read, the more I liked the story and the author's style.
When bored sixteen year old Amy Boxer leaves her mother, Mercy, a note explaining she is running away from home she proudly proclaims: “You will never find me”.
Mercy and Charles are divorced, she is from Africa, and he is from London, but the bond they share because of Amy draws them back together as they search frantically for their daughter. Mercy is a cop and Charles is a kidnap specialist, so finding people is something Charles is fairly good at. So, while he combs through Madrid, the last place Amy was seen, Mercy takes on a child abduction case.
This is a riveting and fast paced thriller preying on every parent's worst nightmare. Blending that in with the drug trade and a the Russian Secret Service made the usual runaway and abduction trope very interesting and edgy indeed. The author deftly intertwines the personal lives of Charles and Mercy into the story as each cope with the situation in their own way and as is the case so often in this type of situation, long held secrets rise to the surface adding yet another tense element to the story.
While this is a “Charles Boxer” mystery, it was Mercy I found to be the most compelling and curious character in the book. She is driven by her career, is still in love with Charles and makes no secret of the fact she would like another chance with him, although he is now involved with someone else. She is also in that special tumultuous place many mothers find themselves in when their daughters hit their teen years and morph into someone they don't even recognize. Amy is the typical teen in many ways, filled with disdain for no good reason, secretive and haughty, thinking she knows more than her parents. But, when she runs away from home, something opens in Mercy causing her to behave in an uncharacteristic way, I would never have imagined from a cop. But, when she is on the job, she is focused, in her element, sharp and alert, excelling here in ways she does not in her personal life.
Charles also goes off script, tossing the proverbial book out the window, in order to find and save his daughter. Both he and Amy will find themselves pawns in a deadly scheme and this is where things got so tense I couldn't book the book down.
I do believe I will be looking for more of the the Charles Boxer mysteries in the future. This story is a unique thriller, well plotted and paced, with interesting and compelling characters. Overall this one gets 4 stars...more

This fourtMuch Ado about Miners by Jacquie Rogers is a 2013 Melange Publication. I was provided a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This fourth installment in the Owyhee Series centers around a mining community where four resourceful and smart ladies form their own company. Iris is the main female protagonist, a clerk at the local bank, who in the opening sequence attempts to foil a robbery attempt, only to shoot Kade McKinnon, the great love of her life, a man she hasn't seen in some time.
The legend goes that all the male victims of Iris's gun, wind up being married soon. If that is true, then Kade would be the next in line. But, he swears that will never happen. He is there to do a job, end of story. Kade is a notorious gunman, but is in town to escort a bullion shipment. What he doesn't know is that Iris and her suffragette group are the owners of the company who hired him.
What a delightful western historical romance! Seriously, this story is just good old fashioned fun. The tone is set with the robbery at the bank, and Iris shooting Kade. From there the story just gets better with laugh out loud hilarity, all sorts of mix ups and misunderstandings, and a couple of sweet romances to cap it off.
I loved the suffragette movement and how these women outsmarted and outwitted everyone proving that women were just as capable as men. These ladies were willing to try anything in order to achieve a level of independence, proving there was huge distinction between wanting a man, and needing a man. They may not have always gotten things right on the first try, but they certainly gave it their best, and were an inspiration.
The romance with Iris and Kade was a rocky one, with Iris deeply in love with Kade and Kade making it crystal clear he would never marry, despite the superstition surrounding Iris' gun slinging. Kade isn't immune to Iris, by any means, but he feels marriage would be unfair to her because his job would keep him away from home most of the time. So, Iris begins to make other arrangements thinking a future with Kade will never happen.
In the meantime robbers are on the loose and Kade will have a time of it keeping the shipment safe.
Add the rescue of a darling cat into the mix and you have a mad cap adventure set in the old west that is full of surprises, action and adventure, humor and romance. This is a western historical but not quite what comes to mind when I think of this genre. This could be a romantic comedy if it was set in present day, if that gives you an idea of what to expect, but the story and the characters are authentic to the time period and the genre, which is a huge thing for me, since I can get testy when modern phrases and actions creep into historical novels no matter what time frame they are set in.
So, overall I highly recommend this book if you are a fan of western historical novels or if you just like to be entertained and want to escape into another time a place for awhile. I don't think you will be disappointed. ...more

I really enjoyed this story which featured Clara Bravo, a character we have met in previous installments in this series.
Clara is pregnant, so as she enters the last trimester of pregnancy, she makes contact with the baby's father, Dalton Ames. The two had an intense affair while on vacation, but after a failed marriage, Dalton felt seeking a relationship with Clara was not a great idea, so they went their separate ways. Now, after being informed he is about to be a father, he virtually takes over Clara's life.
He wants to do the right thing by Clara and the child, which is admirable and responsible, but for Dalton that means getting married. But Clara doesn't think that is the best way to go. In the meantime, Dalton insist on helping Clara out during the last months of her pregnancy after she experiences a few complications, which means moving in with her until the baby is born.
I for one applaud Clara for her wise choice to avoid marrying Dalton because of her pregnancy. I am a firm believer in the “two wrongs don't make a right” adage. An unplanned pregnancy is not a good reason to get married, although many think it's the right thing to do. I understood why Clara was so reluctant. She wanted the whole show- to be in love, to have her husband reciprocate those feelings, to go into marriage for all the right reasons, and not because “it was the right thing to do”. But, is Dalton the right man for her? Does her love her or is he just there because of the child?
While this story is standard fair in many ways, with a conflict a couple must overcome in order to find their HEA, this story delves a little deeper by showing a couple grow individually and together, each giving and taking in order to make the relationship work. Dalton is hard to take sometimes, but he his character develops slowly until he finally sees he must love Clara the way she is and take what she is able to give. Love is patient, love is kind and Dalton had some adjustments to make in that area. As for Clara, her character developed nicely as well. I just thought she was person that didn't do so well under the kind of pressure Dalton was putting on her. She does learn to let go of her fears and can finally see she has all she ever wanted.
This is a mature contemporary romance, and obviously with a very pregnant character the heated romance/sex is little more muted, and the focus is more on the actual relationship development. In the end this was an enjoyable read and I am looking forward to more Bravo family stories. 4 stars ...more

Well, with a title like this7 Years Bad Sex by Nicky Wells is a 2015 publication. I was provided a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Well, with a title like this, one simply can not help but be curious, because this is the stuff nightmares are made of. The thought of it alone is enough to make a person break out in a cold sweat. But, for Alex and Casey, the nightmare is a terrifying, and as you can imagine, frustrating reality.
Alex, a rock musician and Casey, a singer, are the perfect couple. They are deeply in love, compatible in every way, including in the bedroom, until they get married and take off on a three week honeymoon vacation. All of sudden Alex is unable to perform sexually, and no matter what they do nothing seems to help. Initially, they make light of it, but as time passes, desperation sets in. Casey and Alex then embark on a hilarious quest to restore their once sizzling sex life.
I have said this on several occasions, but it is worth mentioning again, I have a love/hate relationship with romantic comedy novels, mainly because what passes as comedy in many cases, is just plain silly to me. Then there are RomComs like this one. Laugh out loud funny, but cohesive, and underneath it all a wonderful love story. The lengths Casey and Alex go to and the things they are willing to try, which often leads to “epic fails” are hilarious, and sometimes cringe worthy. But, there is also the the mounting frustration, then the desperation, then the sadness as the situation begins to take it's toll on the relationship. Can the marriage be saved? Is there really curse? Will Alex get his Mojo back?
If you enjoy contemporary romance, and romantic comedy, you really should check this one out. It 's a super fun read, and I definitely recommend it....more
