I vowedReading has been more of a lifesaver for me this year than any other in recent memory. I'm so thankful for my books and my Goodreads friends!!
I vowed to read a series from start to finish in 2016 and I managed to pull that off. I read the 'Myron Bolitar' series by Harlan Coben from beginning to end. However, I hope Coben writes more installments in this series.
Unexpectently, I grew a little disenchanted with some genres I usually gravitate towards, and became more socially and politically aware, which drove me toward more non-fiction and literary novels. I see that trend deepening in 2017, and predict I will also dive into more classics. However, I will always read mysteries, thrillers and romance novels.
Overall, my reading year has been surprising, enlightening, and challenging. I've met so many wonderful people on Goodreads who have suggested and recommended books to me I never would have found otherwise. I feel blessed to know you and appreciate your honest reviews and book advice as well as your support and patience with my awkward review writing skills.
My favorite book of the year was 'Home' by Harlan Coben. This was one of the best books in the series and had my head buzzing for days.
My favorite author of the year was Kerrigan Byrne. Historical romance was my second favorite genre at one time. However, I feel more trepidation than excitement these days when I pick one up. Kerrigan Byrne is the exception. Dark, brooding, flawed heroes, plots addressing the darker side of humanity, characters facing real adversity, which builds strength, is something Ms. Byrne does not shy away from and that sets her apart from all the rest. If you are looking for a historical romance with a little backbone for a change, then you will love this author and her books!
Best new discovery- Well, there were three this year that really stand out. First: John Hart- author of 'Redemption Road'. Wow! I love literary prose mixed with my mystery thrillers and John Hart has that mashup down to a science.
Second: Liane Moriarty- This year I finally got around to reading one of her books and was instantly addicted. I hope the pressure to mass produce will not put a damper on her creativity.
Last but not least, is Karen White. Ms. White is a seasoned author but I had never read any of her books until this year. The Tradd Street series is outstanding!!
I managed to meet my reading goal and then some. You never know what curves life will throw you, so I am happy I made it without putting too much pressure on myself.
I hope to become more active in the Goodread groups I am a member of in 2017. I sorely neglected them this past year and am ashamed of myself a little for not being more involved. So, hopefully I can redeem myself this coming year.
Overall, I am happy with my reading year! I wish each one of you a happy, safe, healthy and prosperous new year!! ...more
