Of course, it´s completely natural to become primitive again within the shortest amounts of time, and not an unintended dark comedy, self satirizing, biased, sexual predator of an author, who finally deus ex machinas out of this mess.
„In a private journal and in a memoir for his wife, Golding said he tried to rape a 15-year-old girl when he was 18 and on his first holiday from Oxford“ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William...
„He had met her when both were taking music lessons in Marlborough, Wiltshire, when he was about 16 and she was 13, but he tried to rape her two years later when he was home during his first year at Oxford. Golding writes that they went for a walk to the common and he 'felt sure she wanted heavy sex, as this was visibly written on her pert, ripe and desirable mouth'. Soon they were 'wrestling like enemies' as he 'tried unhandily to rape her'. She resisted and Golding, years later, wrote that 'he had made such a bad hand at rape' before shaking her and shouting 'I’m not going to hurt you'.“ „A later girlfriend, Mollie, was also treated badly by Golding. She was another local from Marlborough whom he later let down by breaking off their engagement because he had found her frigid.“ https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...
„The attempted rape involved a Marlborough girl, named Dora, who had taken piano lessons with Golding. It happened when he was 18 and on holiday during his first year at Oxford. Carey quotes the memoir as partially excusing the attempted rape on the grounds that Dora was "depraved by nature" and, at 14, was "already sexy as an ape". It reveals that Golding told his wife he had been sure the girl "wanted heavy sex". She fought him off and ran away as he stood there shouting: "I'm not going to hurt you," the memoir said.“ https://www.writerswrite.com/sir-will...
„Golding, who won the Nobel Prize in 1983, three years after bagging the Booker for Rites Of Passage, admitted trying to rape a 15-year-old schoolgirl when he was an 18-year-old student at Oxford, according to a forthcoming biography by John Carey. The schoolgirl put up a fierce resistance. But they had sex two years later, according to Golding, who nevertheless called her “depraved by nature” and “sexy as an ape” in his unpublished memoir, Men, Women & Now. He wrote it for Ann, his wife of 50 years, to explain his “monstrous” character.“ https://readiscovery.com/2009/08/18/w...
Fringe philosophy Downgrading and unintended satirizing of kids´ language from an adult´s perspective to seem capable of writing empathic and emotional, tragic-comic dialogues and characters is a cheap trick that fails epically, if not performed right. But it´s the logical consequence of making kids act as if they were stupid animals to integrate a biased, boring, and one sided plot. If you want real philosophy on an island, read: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...
More bad philosophy on an island, read: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2... This one has everything, racism, glorifying religious extremism, a true, clear picture of our past.
Back to the show, as it´s often the problem with monopolies, the ones in art lead to overrated, hyped, and simply not good wanna be philosophical constructions. I mean, symbolic, metaphysical, allegory metaphor overload for young people who want to be entertained? Honestly? „Don´t try to murder each other kids.“ What a lesson! Of course, kids are so stupid that they immediately establish cultic dictatorships if they are not supervised, what else should logically happen.
If this wouldn´t be a typical forced read to torture school kids and a kind of pre pop psychology Nobel Prize higher literature with meaning drivel, I would say it´s barely average, but because of its excessive misuse, it´s just unacceptable. Possibly the ever so clever bureaucrats of the boards of education all over the world ought think a second about removing all the trash of all the lauded, boring, outdated, obsolete,… literature each country tends to accumulate in a strange mixture of patriotism, cultural imperialism (our writers, literature, tradition) and think about including the great, amazing, wonderful worlds of literature kids and young adults want to read.
The worst classic I´ve ever read One extra star up to 2 could have been given for incompetently trying to be deep, philosophical, and critical and failing to transport the important message about the evil lurking in naked apes. Nice try, William, but just an epic fail, and total bigotry regarding your alcohol and abuse problems you loved to drivel about in your strange diaries of a molester. I was really searching for deeper meaning, any of all the arguments seen in positive reviews, but it´s just unrealistic, the ending is a bad joke, putting as much symbolism and innuendos in it to camouflage the immense flaws doesn´t really help, and it just fuels my opinion that, just as in real life, much of what is idealized and glorified is just bad and rotten. Look at the ratings of Golding´s other books, rated by people who like to read classics! Another achievement in inability.
I know, there are many getting real pleasure out of classic literature, that´s a question of taste and I don´t force them to read my trivial literature. That´s where the tolerance ends, because the problem is that the previously mentioned kids, teens, and young adults don´t deserve to be bored with what elder generations may really enjoy, but has absolutely no worth for them. I did once make the mistake of reading a few dozen classics and most were just average, some really bad, but definitively close to none great. It´s sad, avoidable, and just plain anachronistic to violently keep extremely outdated versions of descriptions of long away pasts in the curriculum and the main reason kids and teens hate to read.
Irony time, there would be old, classic, clever books that could really tell something about human nature, not using placative over the top violence, especially in the classic and new sci-fi and social-sci-fi genre that explore many questions regarding human nature, state, politics, sexuality, economics, faith, but, they would be too extreme, progressive, and subtle. Cause bigoted conservatives don´t want their kids to read really dangerous, meta context, social criticism, stuff, they want some characters far away from any real, imminent problems playing hide and seek with a freaking pigs´ head.
It truly left me speechless, just asking why, what´s wrong with you, humanities, literary critique, Nobel prize, quality literature, higher art, snobs, modern art, don´t you realize that you are satirizing yourself by praising so many works that many avid, lifelong readers, with k reading scores deem bad, arrogant, boring, and worthless? Reminiscences of a past when bigoted, unenlightened people celebrated any trash that could distract from their incredible cognitive biases. It at least also lets me imagine a purgatory library filled with this stuff and dark angels forcing me to read it until I become insane, repair my brain, and restart the process. Forever. Mwahahaha!
Trying to find an explanation, a combination of personal drivel with the biography of a disturbed mind The author had issues, binge drinking and alcoholism were demons haunting him, and he did exactly write this one thing that made him famous and nothing else of importance. What makes one more disgusted is the fact that he, as mentioned, tried to rape a 15 year old girl when he was 18 (how often has he been successful and didn´t write about it, because he was so completely wasted and drunk that he wouldn´t even remember it?), a reason he should at least be retrospectively condemned, as retroactive, time travel castration isn´t really an option. That´s one of the crime areas where I distance myself from restorative justice and go full metal eye for an eye, archaic retributive justice, because I am of the opinion that sex offenders should be incarcerated under terrible conditions, life imprisonment without any chance to ever see the light of the day again (and this rehabilitation thing is complete, psychologic, psychiatric (2 other partly fringe science the humanities unleashed on humanity like a plague) nonsense. Nobody would try to „cure“ someone who is heterosexual, homosexual, or has a different gender identity than physical body, because that´s completely crazy. But hey, someone who is born (seen in babies) or made a pedophile, rapist, necrophile, etc. can of course be healed. And, another very important factor, it´s cheaper for the state to release serial sex killers to save some money and wait if it takes them weeks or months until the next victim is tortured, raped, and eaten. How is it possible that psychiatrists say that they are no danger anymore before and don´t get any problems for their little oopsies?). However, such a tortured, poor soul, someone who raped as bad as he wrote, could become a celebrated highlight of highbrow s*** literature, which makes him worthy of even more fringe Nobel prizes, maybe for voodoo economics.

Machiavelli's first impulse and hope behind the work was to be recognized as a wise strategist and to be reinstated in his lost positions of power. Although this failed, as one of the first teachers and predecessors of the modern spin doctors, he understood it to show the mechanisms behind the rise and fall of well-known historical figures and great empires and the underlying errors of reason minutely. Primarily, he sought examples from Roman and Italian history, hoping for the unification of Italy under a sovereign banner, to be an emotional anchor for the rulers and generals to be won as readers. The economy was a concern to Machiavelli, recognizing the connection between contented subjects and prosperous army and general beings and recommending constant attention to internal development. The state form perceived as an ideal is always autocratic, albeit with the prosperity and contentment of the oppressed in mind to prevent uprisings. From the psychology of the masses, the stimulated procedures are thought through and testify to the author's knowledge of the human psyche. No pathos, no false heroes are endeavored, but drawn by sharp observation correct conclusions and thus made accurate forecasts for the effects. As one of the founders of political science, Machiavelli proceeds systematically and brings his conclusive findings scientifically severe and without any religious or philosophical transfiguration. This pleasantly sets him apart from Greek and Roman thinkers. Their theses, hidden behind tons of glittering accessories, are sometimes difficult to find and internalize. Many conceivable constellations of power relations are entered. Be it the preconditions for the attainment of power, their preservation, and expansion, dealing with enemies, allies and alleged alliances, the importance of linguistic and cultural unity, the establishment of their mercenary-free military system and dealing with their people and their political followers and opponents. It is urgently warned against the choice of false, incompetent advisers and the importance of the eye on moderation and if only supposed justice. Whereby he also encourages manipulation and lies to preserve the outer appearance, to be able to survive in the daily political business and to be sure of the people's balance. The end justifies the means. This formerly religious leading motive runs through the entire work, and nothing is deterred. It was this openness that stifled a more considerable success during his lifetime, as the conservative society had to turn away from such unchristian practices because they were merely well-conditioned. The mechanism for repressing unpleasant facts utilizing denial of reality, selective perception, and a conservative-bigoted worldview has remained the same. As far as the often criticized unscrupulousness, there is no difference to modern think tanks from the military, politics, and business. Surely the encroachments are today even balanced euphemistically by marketing and PR. To be attractive in the sense of better sound quality, political correctness and corporate responsibility, and to portray the hard-nosed approach as concealing and alienating. Only the concern, not only to harm competing states, companies and also persons with all available means, but to undermine, to carry out state bankruptcy and private bankruptcy, remained the same. Nowadays it is even better hidden behind inscrutable contracts, legal clauses, diplomatic jests, and soothing rhetoric. Moreover, consistently violating one of the fundamental rules of making oneself accessible as well as dreaded by one's people. The timeless validity of several regulations testifies both to the far-sightedness of the author and the pervasive attraction of power and the consequences that this work has directly caused and will cause in the future.
...more
Historical initiation of military tactics and power politics, including psychology

You can, but you do not have to look at Tsu's work with the sole focus on optimizing an incipient war of aggression or defiance. It is for the average citizen also a somewhat rare pastime. In, after the translation from Chinese into English and then into German, short chapters, the fundamental foundations of various tactics and essential influencing factors are explained, and the possible applications illustrated by historical examples. Various fundamental aspects of warfare, such as the choice of terrain, tactics, assault, and deception, the essential meaning of enemy espionage and disinformation, the proper handling of subordinates and potential competitors, and the optimization of the combat ability of the troops are alluded to. From a historical point of view, it is striking how often political leaders and generals have committed mistakes that are difficult to classify and as such unrecognizable. On the contrary are cardinal errors, which would have also fallen into the eye of a layman blessed with common sense. Be it military and psychological miscalculations or mistakes owed to incompetence and megalomania, many great personalities of world history would have acted differently by reading and internalizing this work. The chapter on spies deserves particular attention as Sun sees one of the biggest priorities in favoring and rewarding overflown spies. These, as upside-down and hopefully not supposed double agents, have immense strategic value and significant influence both on the recruitment and selection of other agents in the enemy territory and on the development of the war. Although the proper use of the terrain has proven to be a priority in the course of advancing technological event, it is still an essential factor.
Especially the psychological aspect is an important indicator. So it is essential never to let the enemy get into a seemingly hopeless situation, but always to offer him a supposed escape route to prevent the courage of desperation of the enemy in the fight. In contrast, the knowledge of the hopelessness and lack of escape in your army provides a reliable reservoir of courage of the desperate and in case of the defeat of the dead. Such soldiers will give the last and fight to the utmost. Also, the concepts can be converted to economic life or even interpersonal interaction. As cold and calculating as it may be to use original warfare tactics in economic competition or even relationships, it is necessary for practice. Because the prevention of a hostile takeover or the degradation of a quiet, tolerant housewife or the slipper hero corresponds to the principle for the war to equip if you want peace. Although a bit far from the actual context, still valid. Now one can use the tactics depending on their discretion either of prevention, de-escalation, deterrence, mediation or peacemaking. For example, potential invaders or opponents of conflict demonstrate the hopelessness of their sinister endeavors by their superiority. Alternatively, the knowledge is used for the very purpose of being able to manipulate, pressurize and make successful intimidation attempts. Two pages, none of which seems to be undoubtedly desirable or unworthy, it illustrates the complexity of the matter and its consequences. Also, how a state equipped with such successful strategists and highly developed military technology and tactics, at a time when unorganized barbarian hordes clashed in Europe and North America, collapsed again through mismanagement, nepotism, isolationist policies and misjudgments, is one of the most astonishing examples of teaching history.
Treasures, tropical islands, and rum soaked trope creating overkills
Amazingly good, dense, and complex writing for its time I don´t want to say that prTreasures, tropical islands, and rum soaked trope creating overkills
Amazingly good, dense, and complex writing for its time I don´t want to say that professional college course creative writing is what makes US and UK authors so outstanding, but well, which other countries produce so many amazing fictional works? Before, there were a few classic pearls by authors that weren´t just able to write good stories, but understood the most important ingredient of compelling art
Mixing character and plot From the beginning, there are more and more unfolding open questions, mysteries, Chekhovs, and MacGuffins that are always fused with character motivation. This today totally normal thing was outstanding in the old days and is a reason why many classics are average, boring, or just simply bad. Take the terrible other island classics like Robinson Crusoe https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2... or Lord of the Flies https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/7... They both don´t just suck at being mind blowing, but have stupid messages and ideologies integrated the authors want to get into the readers' brains. In contrast,
Stephenson understood that there should be just a high and good entertainment level He creates a complex crew of characters, always throws them in a small territory they can´t escape from, ships, forts, a treasure hunt, and slowly escalates the whole thing. Because I´m a fan of epigenetics and the sociocultural evolution of fictional concepts, I could already search, find, and see the progress of a once spread trope idea in
So many other works inspired by it Be it horror, fantasy, or my favorite genre to rule them all, sci fi, they all developed new ideas about how to find the magic stone, the skull of the necromantic god emperor, or the alien artifact. And what leaves me stunned in even more awe is that, in the other time direction, a few thousand years ago the first ancient storytellers were inspired by the totally forgotten tales of primitive starving stone age artists. Who probably invented the idea of a hero's journey to find the fattest and most delicious mammoth.
Not as awesome as expected A classic, probably a bit overrated book, and one of the rare cases in which I wouldJust leave the Milk Bar to go bonkers
Not as awesome as expected A classic, probably a bit overrated book, and one of the rare cases in which I would say that the movie is better than the book. The most unnecessary thing was to add an extra chapter at the end that took the flow, logic, and atmosphere out of the whole thing. Nice development of an own language, but also not as cool as other examples. The whole dystopic brainwashing idea is one of the best elements.
It reminds me of many overrated classics that form 3 stages or categories of boredom.
Books that for no understandable reason have to be read in school, depending on the country's culture, and are mainly focused on the bad, outdated, old, very long time dead, writers of each country, so that there are individual purgatories for young readers in each state.
Nobel prize, nothing to add, the same with peace and economics, it´s just a bad joke. But many don´t seem to get it and take it seriously.
Be creative without caring about conventions Clockwork Orange is in the third category: Books that use complex, not absolutely logical or even not for the author understandable, unstable plots and inconsistent ideas to be progressive, provocative, and sell more by activating the bite reflexes of conservatives, bigots, and philistines and give nothing on the thousands of years old conventions of writing for the pleasure of the reader. I´ve read much of all 3 categories and must say that it´s the same as with modern art: If there is no recognizable concept, many others could do the same, and if it´s not universally acclaimed a masterpiece, it´s probably average or completely inexplicably overhyped trash.
One hit wonder if average ratings of the author´s other works aren´t that thrilling Clockwork Orange is one of the better ones, but it would be nothing without Kubricks´adaption, and looking at the general ratings and popularity of all of Burgess´other works, one can see the picture of a one hit wonder.
Except that the arguments aren´t direct racism anymore Now it comes with much propaganda of right wing, neoconservNot that much has changed in 90 years
Except that the arguments aren´t direct racism anymore Now it comes with much propaganda of right wing, neoconservative, and neoliberal politicians and news outlets to find ridiculous, unscientific, and sheer stupid and evil explanations of why the US is such a mess. Thereby the instances satirize themselves by trying to be politically correct, objective, and not too obviously hating, trolling, and warmongering against critical race theory, woke, and cancel culture. So the
Accepted racism transformed into things like Not directly lynching black people without a fake trial, but instead giving them fair trials. Black kids could go to each good private school if it wouldn´t be unaffordable. No more redlining, everyone who can effort to live in a gated community, in the countryside, or in a suburb is free to do so And so many other direct and indirect racist societal, governmental, and especially economic reasons. The neoliberal agenda is making it possible to
Change from direct hate speech to subtle, economic terror Because that´s perfectly fine, no matter how many million US citizens and billion people around the world in the Southern hemisphere have to suffer for economic growth. See, the mechanisms behind this are so complex, avoided by close to all news media except for the ones far left, eco social, aka leftist, and thereby stigmatized and unimportant in the US and more in more in the EU too. Instead of the elite friendly, unscientific, and very bad humanities creating pop psychology, sociology, philosophy, and voodoo economy authors like Stephen Pinker https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/3... Hans Rosling https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/3... and all this other, ridiculous trash, one should try Chomsky, Paul Hawken, Silvia Federici, Bill McKibben, Colin Crouch, Klein, William McDonough, Jessica Valenti, Henry David Thoreau, John Perkins, Steward Brand, Rebecca Solnit, George Monbiot, Kendi Ibram X, Yanis Varoufakis, Shiva Vandana, Jonathan Safran Foer, Ziegler, Davis Angela Y, Rachel Carson, Brittney Cooper, Kristof Nicholas D, etc. because that´s what´s really going on at the moment. They are what I love throwing into the faces of ignorant, brainwashed, hypocritical bigots. Because guess what,
The people trying to ban To kill a Mockingbird for decades are the same intolerant haters that truly believe in their emotions and faith instead of science, data, and progressive transformation
And that´s the most disturbing thing about this milestone of enlightening literature One can look wherever one wants in the US and already the obvious problems like mass incarceration https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/6... Sexism and discrimination against black women https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/6... etc. are omnipresent. But especially the Karens and other, pseudo democratic, wanna be progressive, and fringe mind opened people won´t ever touch such a topic with a pitchfork, they prefer to roll like: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/6... https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/4... Better do some demonstrative social work for social media or give a few dollars of the millions made thanks to exploitation. And avoid everything causing cognitive dissonances that could one let question ones´behaviour and its underlying psychopathological illogicality. The suffering of so many people makes them very, very self righteously sad and they don´t like the elephant in the room behind that feeling. So better ignore it.
But, as I tend to say in my profile and to give myself some hope after this pretty downing review: Collective intelligence, networking, and collaborative learning/researching lead to the unleashing of each one's full potential and the most sustainable and progressive transformation of human society. Be an enlightened, mindful, questioning, scrutinizing, emancipated part of it.
I don´t just believe in objective, hard science, but especially in using the amazing technology, we have to unite as freaking social justice warriors of the world.

Living what one writes Some authors have the ability to absorb the mentality of cultures they live in and are fascinated by to create works that are simply impossible to copy because they stand unique in their style, language and deep, hidden messages, references and innuendos. Similar to Arthur Goldens' work Memoirs of a Geisha, Buck´s work integrates key elements of Asian mentality, history, and the authentic life of a hard-working farmer and is close to a real historic description, a great alternative to a history book.
Culture forming behaviour If the setting would be in another culture, the whole behavior of many of the roles of the key characters might the different and the story could develop in a completely different direction. Let´s imagine an author would have lived together with a tribe or studied indigene populations for his whole life or had an interest in an advanced ancient civilization a written a novel about it. There could be more monuments of human history like this one written by historians going the Follett way.
No alternatives It might be difficult to impossible for an author who has no lifelong interest, ten thousands of hours of thinking and reflecting about the culture and the love to finetune a book until total perfection, to create something like this. And to a certain extent this is great too, because in this way works like this will be very difficult to produce in inflationary, mainstream amounts.

One of the most degenerated, misguidedA religious, racist, white supremacy, sexist bigot driveling about how great he is while playing Robinson Crusoe
One of the most degenerated, misguided POVs I´ve ever read That´s more of a narcissistic, egomaniac, even kind of sociopathic, persons´ diary than a novel, and it´s filled with the unreflected, racist, extremely faith-focused, arrogant thoughts of an author who has the amazing gift to write both unilateral and boring.
Compare it with the real stuff from centuries ago and see even more how it sucks Take Jonathan Swift or greek philosophers or hieroglyphics or cave paintings, or, the best example, Robert Louis Stephensons' Treasure island, all examples of less ego-focused works that have a plot, an arc of suspense, other detailed, credible characters that transport no sick pro slavery mentality or anything that differentiates a novel from a trivial travel report.
Skim and scan, you won´t miss anything substantial, wise, or deep. Or just don´t read it, the best option. After quite a while I was just scanning anymore, because except for redundancies, lists, and stupid thoughts there was less to find in this novel. The main character is an unlikeable idiot, he doesn´t even have to be smart or fight to survive to get any suspense into the poor telling, because he has all he needs to survive on the island and saved material from the shipwreck, so he has nothing to do than to think of how superior he and his ever so great faith, culture, and sophistication are in contrast to Fridays´ immense primitivity.
Would be a banned troll hater account nowadays Imagine someone doing it nowadays, no matter if online or in boring meatspace. In any civilized society, the person would be excluded, prosecuted, and flamed or, by friendlier individuals, pitied as the abject individuals that they are. The civilizations, groups, and societies that are still practicing such ideologies and would promote and invite the troll are a few centuries behind sociocultural evolution.
A total not reading suggestion, but I can understand that the society of the 18th century liked this novel because it reflected, celebrated, and confirmed their inhuman and insane mentality.
