It’s interesting to revisit old faves because you don’t read things the same way with more life experience, and certainly you have more context to worry over problematic elements in a plot—of which there are a lot.
But still, while adult Wendy is more cynical about this attraction and deeply disapproving of the power imbalance (view spoiler)[ and Damien’s repeatedly sleeping with his ward while pushing her away at the same time (hide spoiler)], the sparks are still leaping off the page, and the story still stirs up genuine anguish and affection for its characters. I’d still very much recommend, with caution to be mindful that this is a historical romance written 30-some years ago, especially if you enjoy stormy, mouthy heroines, rakes who fall in love against their will, and a well done rags-to-riches story....more

Between all of these things:
(view spoiler)[ -- car accident that killed her boyfriend and child -- being in the car with them and surviving -- snobby rich parents who hated that boyfriend because he was poor and Indian -- her family pretending that the accident was just her hallucinating, so they could save face -- her being pressured into dating the "right" rich boy -- her walking in on her sister in bed with that rich boy -- her running away from NY to start all over in a small town -- her sister and ex coming to visit and being jerks -- her getting involved with a guy with a wife who abandoned him and their kid -- the fact that the kid screams with everyone except family and her -- the kid's imaginary friend has THE SAME NAME AS HER DEAD DAUGHTER, SO WHAT DO YOU THINK IS GOING TO HAPPEN HERE -- guy also feels guilty for Reasons. No one one is without baggage, you know. (hide spoiler)]

These characters aren't particularly nuanced, and are slotted into roles as if they're in a play, and I find it disappointing that the mother and Will in particular are so uninteresting and so very predictable.
The twists are also fairly easy to guess (are they not meant to be?), if not the exact circumstances of them, then certainly the possibility that they would happen. No revelatory story arcs or characters here, so coupled with a rather bizarrely self-indulgent last chapter and uneven pacing, this was not a big hit for me....more
