NOTE: Since these two brief, flippant sentences have gotten so many trolls over the years, I'll just aLoved it. Except for the raging feminist agenda.
NOTE: Since these two brief, flippant sentences have gotten so many trolls over the years, I'll just add that I support the book's feminist ideals 100%.
What I do not like is the way we're hammered over the head with the message. (The "raging" part, if you will.) It's inelegant, tiresome soapboxing that managed to annoy someone who actually agrees with the principles, so I don't know how it's going to persuade anyone who does not. Katsa's views also express the kind of feminism that seem to be extremely critical of other women's choices, which I found off-putting.
There's a lengthy discussion below where I go into my feelings further with people who are discussing in a reasonable manner, although I certainly don't need to justify my opinions to those who are only interested in telling people off on the internet. Nice job on not bothering to do 2 seconds' more research, but hey. Self-righteous outrage is so much easier.
But you know, people who don't agree with the book's feminine philosophy actually do have a right to that opinion, too. Why is it so goddamned difficult to respect that? That doesn't seem to be in the spirit of independent thinking and free will that feminism is purportedly all about.
I've come to realize that I probably shouldn't have used the word "agenda," however. As someone who believes that women are capable of carving out whatever life they want (though, I might add, Katsa is not nearly so tolerant of other women's choices) and not being as aware of how politically charged that word has become in denigrating causes/beliefs, I didn't read the same kinds of negative connotations into it that clearly others have. An unfortunate choice in words that I've come to regret. ...more

This audiobook is fantastic, btw--it includes a fascinating introduction by the author, who explains the rather touching inspiration behind the story. Sissy Spacek's narration is pitch-perfect for this, too!...more

It didn't feel like a YA book except that the main character was so immature, selfish, and self-centered, and nothing gets explored in very much depth. I just didn't get this book, right from the very beginning. You know Meg is supposedly reactionary for a reason, but that reason seemed forced. (view spoiler)[And would the cops really handcuff a girl who has just left her parent's car because she doesn't want treatment for leukemia? To the point of physically holding her down on her father's orders while treatment is administered? (hide spoiler)] I didn't like Meg at all and I thought most of the scenarios were far-fetched and unconvincing.
It also weirded me out our view of John kept switching from a very adult, responsible cop to a 19-year-old boy. The characters I liked best were the secondary ones, so overall this one was just not a success for me....more

And I'm getting tired of the constant break-ups, which seems to happen every few chapters or so. If you're wearing promise rings, vacationing together, and in freaking joint therapy sessions, the relationship should be much further along than this. I thought Gideon's past terrors were really interesting, so it was disappointing so much time was spent on Eva's ex and her stalker.
Still, I really enjoy this series--among the better erotic fiction out there--and I like Eva and Gdeon. I just hope the last book shows more character development and better, less predictable plotting. The characters are so likable and the attraction between Eva and Gideon is so scorching that the rest of it should be easy. ...more
