Their mom takes a turn and gets sick and that divides them but eventually their way back. I was extremely happy with this book. I couldn't put it down! I love books that depict real life situations and this one took one of the hardest situations and made you look through the eyes of the victim. I cried and laughed and then sighed at the end. I was happy with the ending. When I think about what Gina had to go through in her life with the man that she loved with all her heart, I cry. I think about before and how I dealt with my daughter's father and the abuse that he put me through. Eventually you wake up and see the light and walk away but some people can't. Those are the people that need help. But to find these people is hard. You won't see any bruises because they wear their abuse in their hearts and souls. They cry out to you but shy away when you answer. Most of the time they never make it out and sometimes they die far too soon. So if you read this book and notice anyone that shows signs, help them. They may be your family members, neighbors, friends. Don't walk away even if they tell you to. Help from the shadows if needed, they will thank you eventually....more

Car is gone, phone and wallet are home. Something isn't right. Karen, Tom's wife is found with her car wrapped around a pole in a neighborhood that just doesn't make sense as to what she was doing there. Seriously hurt, she is brought to the hospital. Tom's informed that his wife has been found and rushes to see her at the hospital. Questions fly, what happened, why, how did this happen. None of those questions could be answered because Karen can't remember anything from the whole night. Dead body is found murdered not far from where Karen was speeding away from. Detectives and Tom want answers. But Karen has none. Strange things are occurring in the home, things appearing where they weren't before. Items moved. Who is doing this or is Karen loosing her mind? Nosey neighbor who's completely engrossed in Karen and Tom's life. An ending that gives you all the answers you are looking for and then more. Then when you're about to be through it, good twist!
I really enjoyed this book. I'm loving Shari Lapena! I didn't love this one like I did the last but that doesn't mean it was really good. The pace was pretty fast. Started off immediately and kept going. The suspense is what was killing me. I had to know what happened and who did it? Was it really Karen or could it have been her husband? I kept getting thrown breadcrumbs to the possibilities of what it could've been. Then when the book starts wrapping up you get all the answers you were looking for and then some. Twisty.....turny..... suspenseful....loved it...more

What can I say, I love Freida, I love how her books dive right into it and keep me in anticipation of the craziness and the some of the best plot twists I've ever read.
I've always gravitated to the historical fiction genre. Every time I read one I'm humbled but what I just read.

This book, well, this book has me speechless. I've read a chunk of the reviews and can agree and disagree with a little bit of everything that I read. But here's my personal feelings...
This book was hard, it was sad, it was humbling. The story of Cora and her journey toward freedom is all those things and so much more. It's hard to really criticize good or bad because knowing that even though the story of "Cora" was fictional. There were many "Cora's" during this time that were not. That's where my heart went in reading this, knowing that Cora was many women, knowing that this was reality for them during slavery. I saw many faces in my mind that could've been Cora.
I pushed through reading this book, not because it wasn't good, because it was really good. I pushed through it because of the horror it brought front and center. I would have to collect myself to come back to read some more.
I spent the entire book stuck inside the head of the main character. Suspense... some Satisfaction from the suspense.. I didn't like it... Not for me....

Not much of a story in this book. Just a bunch of maybes and what ifs
An entire book of build ups for a not so satisfying climax.
I like the idea of what the story could be. I just wish there were more to it....more

What I didn't like about it was, I'm still not quite sure what the story was. Maeve finds her grandmother who happens to be a Hollywood royalty. A few flash backs and you get a glimpse into their relationship but not too much. The grandmother who is old and in a coma like state is at home and being cared for by home care worker. Maeve works for the happiest place on earth with her best friend Kate. Through Kate she meets her brother Gideon. Maeve and Gideon end up forming some sort of understanding together, I wouldn't call it a relationship. A few intimate scenes, some intense happen. A lot of walking around and thinking. A few scenes from work as well, nothing to really jump up about. Then about 3/4 of the way through the book crazy murders start happening and grow with intensity for the remainder of the story, which isn't much left. The ending isn't a big jump and doesn't leave you with much closure. I mean yeah, she kills people, yeah she's crazy but what else? What is the result?
Now this is only my opinion as I know that this book has some good reviews, It's just not the book for me. If you like gore, then you got it in here. The book is a fairly quick read and goes quicker once you clear the halfway point of the book.
Good luck on your adventure through this one;) ...more
