I love nature and hate humanity. Even more than I did before.
This may be, along with The Velveteen Rabbit, one of the best children’s book I’ve ever read, if not the best period; can’t decide which I love more. This was pure devastating PERFECTION, Wilde style. To achieve so much, in so few pages… simply MAJESTIC. 6 stars, easy.
Equally good for children AND adults. I actually think this is an adult’s book disguised as a children’s; because any child can enjoy it, truly, but ultimately, only a grown seasoned adult can understand its true meaning; and that’s exactly where lies its devastating beauty.
I think anything else said would be spoilerish, so trust me on this and just read it; you can thank me later. Not for nothing it’s considered in many lists as one of the best “Children’s” book ever written.

I’ve read a collection of M.R. James and found several hits and misses with him, but this short was absolutely the best by far; so exceptional that whenever I think examples of the best short stories, this one always comes to mind. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to innocently stare at a painting again; and for that, this tiny gem deserves a place of honor in my shelf for shorts. This little masterpiece of mere 12 pages that you can read in a flash is eeriness perfection.

A very selfish Giant returns home only to find a multitude of children happily playing in his lovely beautiful garden. The nerve of those snotty brats! Swiftly he repairs the borders and raises high walls to stop any children from entering his beautiful garden ever again. But without the candor of the children the garden quickly loses its warmth, and an everlasting winter sets in…
Another brilliant masterpiece by Wilde. Along with "The Nightingale and the Rose.", one of the best works of the author I’ve read. And one of the best short stories I’ve ever read period. Five pages of pure perfection you can finish in a heartbeat. You would think this is a simple tale, and in a way it is… but that ending! Holy Jebus!

Calcutta born narrator travels from India, to England, and lastly United States, in an attempt to study and establish abroad. Barely with enough money to support himself, and struggling to settle and adapt to western customs and way of life. Trying to earn enough so he can finally find his own place, and bring his arranged marriage wife, who he barely knows.
This is part of ”Interpreter of Maladies” and one of those uniquely wonderful examples for which I love short stories. This little gem of mere 19 pages that you can read in a flash makes the word “Splendid” acquire a whole new meaning for me. I had forgotten why I liked this one so much and, rereading it, nearly ten years later, I can now recall the reason. And why this handful of pages truly deserves a place in my best of short literature shelf.

This was just PERFECT! This is exactly why I love short stories. You can invest hours, days, weeks or even months in a long book; and it can either be bad, good, or, if you are lucky enough, a perfect ten. On the other hand, sometimes you can invest as much as ten or twenty minutes in a short story, and be rewarded just the same, or even immensely more! Short stories may not have a detailed setting, a complex plot or unforgettable characters, yet just the same they can sometimes leave you a message that will truly stay with you forever, and just for the price of a couple of minutes. For me, this tiny story is one of those invaluably unique examples. And of course, it had to be Wilde.
So that’s why I’m opening a new shelf and will be adding the most memorable short stories I’ve ever read. Because this tiniest thing of a handful of pages that can be hardly called a book, truly deserves its own review, and my five stars.

I LOVED IT WITH ALL MY HEART. Loved Tiffy right from the start, so sweet, and funny! Took me a little longer to open up to Leon, but maybe because I’m just as reserved as he is. I also can’t explain how much I loved Rachel, she’s like THE perfect bff. Always made me smile or laugh whenever she was around. Mo and Gerty were great. So was Richie. And Holly. On the other hand, totally HATED Justin with every fiber of my being, and my only complaint about this book is that I feel he wasn’t punished enough. I think all the hype and fame as one of the best romcoms is very well deserved. Endless supply of quotes and moments to remember by. Lost track of how many times this book made me smile, laugh and swoon, wholesome like a healing balm to the soul. Painful moments also included along the ride. The post-it thing was simply adorable. The banter was addictive. The slow burn was beyond amazing.
PERFECTION; like few others I’ve ever read. One of those books I would love to re-read like the first time.

Alex Blackwood and Molly Parker are both starting Pitt University. Alex is easy going and kind of a player; trying to rebuild her relationship after a recent break-up with Natalie. Molly is super shy and socially anxious; an introvert in desperate quest for new friends, and hopelessly in love with unattainable Cora. Alex is going to try to help her win her heart, and craziness is going to unfold for everyone involved.
I’m going to start by saying that my experience with rom-com and lgbt novels is near non-existent. That said, THIS WAS AWESOME. The kind of book I would love to reread like the first time. Molly has my winning socially inept personality, and Alex my occasional boldness and snarky humor, so it was no problem relating with them both. This novel shoved my butterflies all over the place and is as sweet as it can possibly get, without ever becoming too much. I lost count of how many times it made me laugh and smile. Swooning is also guaranteed. Perfect chemistry. Endless supply of quotes and moments to remember by.
I think this novel has a pretty easy lovable theme, so if you don't feel the magic by the first third of the book I would suggest to drop it, it won’t happen. The plot offers nothing new, I know I’ve seen something similar before, just can’t exactly pinpoint where. The ending is utterly predictable, I went in with nothing but the title and the skates of the cover, and still already guessed the ending by chapter 5. So this is not a novel about the ending, it’s a novel about the ride. And what a ride it was. Truly unforgettable. A spot in “Perfection” shelf, solid favorite and possible Top 10. Extremely recommendable, for the right audience. And I wouldn’t be surprised if it becomes a movie someday.
----------------------------------------------- PERSONAL NOTE: I had this friend, BFF for so long, so many years. Time and distance eventually drew us apart; but I still remember her from time to time. She loved roller figure skating. Won competitions even, the works. So when I saw the roller skates on the cover I immediately thought of her and simply HAD to read it. This one was for you, Ve.
Wow. I mean WOW!!! I would’ve never imagined this little novella could even stand a chance against Wonder, but man I was wrong! And the fact that a character that I hated SO MUCH, through all of Wonder, and during most of this book… to have my perspective changed SO much, to move me SO deeply, heart-aching and tearing so hard. And accomplishing something like this in so few pages. JUST WOW. Totally speechless. Palacio, you magnificent bastard, you did it again. BEYOND OUTSTANDING.

After barely surviving the deadly Hunger games, days in District 12 turn simple and peaceful; the life of a victor carries Dystopian Perfection +++
After barely surviving the deadly Hunger games, days in District 12 turn simple and peaceful; the life of a victor carries tranquility, fame and well-being. Yet new difficulties don’t take long to appear; being the new celebrity of Panem brings a lot of attention, and of the most dangerous kind. The challenge in the previous tournament does not go unnoticed, and the beginnings of a rebellion start to arise. Under the ever vigilant eye of the Capitol, not even the victors, the strongest among the strong, can escape its power. Katniss and Peeta will have to try to appease the social unrest, and prove their loyalty to the government; or else their loved ones, their district, and even all of Panem may burn for it.
Can you better perfection? Well, all I can say this was for me one of those few examples that plainly proves that you can. This was absolutely engrossing and unputdownable from start to finish; just as good as the first book, but multiplied by 2x, if not more. I couldn’t care less if it felt a bit like a clone, it was just so damn good! Perfectly paced and action packed. Awesomeness brought to a whole new level. The events in District 12, the tour through Panem, the visit to the Capitol, the arena; everything so equally absorbing and compelling. And so many new lovable and hateful characters added to the mix, yet everyone real, different and unique in their way. Mind blowing character development, considering the staggering amount of characters included in this book. A true work of art, and probably one of the best dystopian fiction I’ve ever read, if not the best period. Highly Recommendable.
Team Johanna & Finnick btw.
*** The movie (2013) is another masterful adaptation; highly enjoyable and rewatch worthy as much as the book. The film again bringing the world and characters alive in the most unforgettable way. Some minor things left out, but nothing too relevant to matter or mention, except maybe a few scenes from the book between Katniss and Peeta which I thought were pretty emotional and meaningful. Lawrence and Hutcherson as wonderful as before, yet also many more remarkable performances by a superb supporting cast; my favorites being Jena Malone and Sam Claflin, as Johanna and Finnick, respectively. Although they were not the only ones that captured my heart. Another incredible almost perfect adaptation which I never get tired of rewatching whenever I happen to catch it on TV. Extremely Recommendable.

Extremadamente Recomendable.

19tth century. Karana is a young indian from a small village living in a remote place; San Nicolas, the island of the blue dolphins. A little islet with mountain, forest, animals, fish and birds everywhere. In her community, with her family or alone, Karana learns to survive in a small land secluded from the rest of the world. But even a seemingly paradisiac island, with all its amazing beauties, has its dangers. Mainly, strangers coming from distant lands.
Something like a mixture between “Robinson Crusoe” and “The Blue Lagoon”, but different from either. Simply excellent, perfect in every way. Beautifully heartwarming, and exquisitely heart wrenching. Very easy to read. LOVED Karana and her devotion for all the animals in the island. Amazing character development. And with a powerful message about survival and love for nature. Innumerable moments and quotes to remember by. I keep forever within my heart that beautiful friendship and enmity between Karana and Rontu. Siglo XIX.
1969-93, Kerala, India. Rahel and Estha are two estranged early adult siblings, reunited again after decades apart. Rahel, vivacious, outspoken, and working hard abroad; Estha reclusive, near mute, and never far off home. As they fumblingly attempt to reconnect, flashbacks from the past come back and forth, revealing the history and tragedy of a once united family, that now is not.
This was one weird f*cked up book, and still one of the best I’ve ever read. The God of Small Things weaves the story of two generations, from parents Ammu and Pappachi, to their descendants, Rahel and Esthappen. A family’s history written in tiny glimpses of joy, and ill-fated events; scarred with terrible familiar and societal injustices, and fleeting moments of happiness, in a world prone to swiftly crush them. The story of Pappachi, Ammu, Velutha, Chako and Baby Kochamma taking a major role in the plot progression, and the unfolding chain of events.
To be honest after five years I hardly remember anything at all. It’s not the stuff is forgettable, I actually think it’s pretty memorable, in fact much of it's just atrocious and I wish I could forget it. The story is so f*cked up in so many ways, with heavy TW written all over the place. But tbh I couldn’t care less; what I absolutely LOVE about this book has nothing to do with the plot or its characters, but Arundhati Roy's style of writing. I just fell madly in love with it.
Reading this book was like watching an infinitely intricate spider web connecting every single little detail. Like Pappachi's Moth, and so many other seemingly trivial things. But ordinary things that kept repeating themselves again and again, in so many unique and different ways. Creating a world of new concepts out of thin air, exquisitely recrafting small tiny events, and weaving all of them together in this tragic little universe.
I must confess the idea of becoming a writer has appealed to me once or twice, although doubt it’ll ever happen, since I’m fully aware of my appalling absence of consistency and habit, not to mention maybe the skill lacking. But if I’m ever to become one, this is how I want to do it, or at last attempt to; because what Arundhati Roy did here, her style of writing, was for me divine perfection, and to nail it on her debut novel, beyond exceptional.
1969-93, Kerala, India.
One Christmas morning, little Boy receives many presents, and among them a Velveteen Rabbit. At first he isn’t noticed, but with time Ra Perfection.
One Christmas morning, little Boy receives many presents, and among them a Velveteen Rabbit. At first he isn’t noticed, but with time Rabbit finds a place in little Boy’s heart. Rabbit snuggles with him at night, and plays with him during the day. But Rabbit knows he is not Real, he's wearing out, and one fateful day little Boy becomes ill.
I. LOVED. THIS. WITH. ALL. MY. HEART! I’m dying to go to a store, get a stuffed rabbit and huge it and love it until it becomes real. This is what perfection tastes like, a kind of book I so rarely find. This children’s book is regarded in many lists as one of the best ever written, and very rightfully so. Highly enjoyable as a child for its simplicity, and as an adult for its meaning. Utterly endearing and touching to no end, with an unforgettable lesson on love, and life.
I’ve been wanting to read this ever since I watched that episode in Friends where Chandler gifts this book to Kathy; and it took me nothing less than twenty years to get to it but the day finally arrived. Best day ever.
----------------------------------------------- PERSONAL NOTE: [1922] [40p] [Children’s] [EXTREMELY Recommendable] [“When you are loved, then you become Real.” “Does it hurt?” asked the Rabbit. “Sometimes.” said Skin Horse, for he was always truthful.] [“Once you are loved you can’t be ugly, except to people who don’t understand.”] -----------------------------------------------
----------------------------------------------- NOTA PERSONAL: [1922] [40p] [Niños] [EXTREMADAMENTE Recomendable] [“Cuando eres amado, entonces te vuelves Real.” -----------------------------------------------...more
Charlie Gordon works cleaning the floors in a store, and attends learning classes at Beekman College Center for Retard Sometimes ignorance is bliss.
Charlie Gordon works cleaning the floors in a store, and attends learning classes at Beekman College Center for Retarded Adults. All his life all he ever wanted was to learn, so he could become intelligent and be normal and have lots of friends. An opportunity arises for a revolutionary operation, and he is the first human to be selected. The procedure had amazing results in Algernon, a lab mouse whose intelligence multiplied tenfold. And as Charlie’s IQ increases exponentially, he begins to understand and see everything in a different way. Intelligence opens the doors to a world full of new perceptions and experiences, and not always pleasant ones. But the procedure is not guaranteed to have permanent results. Will his intelligence remain?> And why is Algernon behaving erratically now?
This was BEYOND GOOD, this was PERFECTION. 6 stars. A kind of book I think everyone should read at least once in their lifetime. This is more than an ode to intelligence, it’s about life, and what it means to be a person. This was absolutely riveting, heartwarming and heartbreaking, from the first page to the last, without exception. Innumerable quotes and moments to remember by. LOVED Charlie with all my heart, a character I don’t think I’ll ever forget. SO HUMAN. Also loved Algernon, and Alice, and maybe even Donner and Burt a little. I have mixed feelings regarding Strauss, Nemur, Frank, Joe, Gimpy, Fay, Matt and Norma. Hated Rose. In all, a truly unforgettable journey, a flawless masterpiece, one I would love to reread as the first time. A spot more than rightfully earned in my exclusive Perfection shelf. EXTREMELY RECOMMENDABLE.
WARNING: There are 2 books out there. A short story and a novel. If you ever go for this book I strongly suggest going first for the SHORT STORY (6 stars), as it is virtually impossible to dislike it. Everything moves so fast (100p) there is like literally no time to dislike anything at all. The NOVEL (3.5+ stars) is also great, but as the plot expands (300p+), it is invariably likely some parts may feel like dragging, and one two or more things you might or might not dislike. The novel is basically the same as the short story, but it extends the story with expanded plot (view spoiler)[ about his childhood with his family, incidents with his fellow workers at the store, a trip to a science convention, a brief independent life with Algernon, a relationship with Alice Kinian, the introduction of Fay, and a reunion with his estranged family. (hide spoiler)] Personally I think the novel was almost as good as the short story, but after the first one hundred pages, some parts started to feel like dragging, convoluted and over repetitive. (view spoiler)[ Loved the unfolding relationship with Alice, but didn’t care much at all about the science convention or Fay. (hide spoiler)]
*** Flowers for Algernon (2000) is an exceptionally touching adaptation. The plot is a mixture between the short story and the long novel. The romance with Alice Kinian plays a major part in the film, wonderfully portrayed and the best by far. The science convention was also included, and a brief appearance of Faye and Rose. Matthew Modine plays a superbly endearing version of Charlie, and Kelli Williams a great complement with Alice. Some very powerful moments, two at least that made me tear (view spoiler)[ like the death of Algernon and the farewell with Alice (hide spoiler)]. Some funny scenes, and some awkward ones too. Not the best film ever, but a very memorable one and worthy to watch. Decently faithful to the book, all things considering. Highly Recommendable.
*** Charly (1968) is an acceptable adaptation at best. The plot also a mixture, including the relationship with Alice and the convention, but none of Faye or Rose. The film largely felt extremely detached, the romance with Alice very cringy and flat, as well as the friendship with Algernon and Charlie’s coworkers. None of it moving, or barely at most. Some wildly anticlimactic scenes, embarrassing sometimes, and laughable special effects. Cliff Robertson displaying a weird but powerful performance, worthy of recognition and maybe deserving of the Oscar award. The science convention was the best part of the movie by far, impressive addition and very memorable. A very flawed and somewhat faithful adaptation. Overall watchable, but hardly enjoyable. Not recommendable.
----------------------------------------------- PERSONAL NOTE: [1959 / 1966] [100p / 300p] [Classics] [EXTREMELY Recommendable] [Minnie <3] [“All my life I wantid to be smart and not dumb. But its very hard to be smart.”] [“After the operashun Im gonna try to be smart. Im gonna try awful hard.”] [“I had lots of tests and different kind of races with Algernon. I hate that mouse. He always beats me.”] (view spoiler)[ [“Please… please let me not forget how to read and write.”] (hide spoiler)] -----------------------------------------------
Tengo sentimientos cruzados respecto a Strauss, Nemur, Frank, Joe, Gimpy, Fay, Matt y Norma. Odié a Rose.
No recomendable.
Siempre me gana.”] (hide spoiler)] ----------------------------------------------- ...more
Unnamed MC has enough personal problems as it is, it doesn’t get any easier when he receives a phone call from the hospital. I need another ticket!
Unnamed MC has enough personal problems as it is, it doesn’t get any easier when he receives a phone call from the hospital. Mary, his fiancée, has suffered a major accident, and is agonizing. On her deathbed, Mary just asks him one thing, to go and visit the old Bowman Amusement Park, for her. When he arrives the place looks totally in ruins, and long abandoned since that terrible accident that happened many years ago; but when he walks through the doors, light floods it all, and everything returns to life.
I cannot begin to explain how much I LOVED this thing. This book came just at the right time, more than a decade ago, and left me so many tearing moments I’ll never forget (view spoiler)[ The video message, the ship duel, the strong man, the final notice… (hide spoiler)]. This little story tore me to pieces and disarmed me in ways few books ever did, then put back together a more hopeful version of me before letting me go, and I LOVE it for it. It was simply perfect.
This story is supposed to be a thinly veiled self-help book, so I don’t think this book is for everybody. I’m sure it’s plagued with symbolism, metaphors and whatnot; but as usual I never noticed a thing, and frankly I couldn’t care less. Did I remain at the most basic and obtuse level of understanding? Quite possibly. But often that’s the level where magic happens, and where magic, unexplained, remains magic.
For me this was just a magical tale, and doesn’t need to be anything else. One of the most tearing and uplifting things I’ve ever read, with a shattering ending I can never forget, and strongly wish I could, just so I can reread it, and surprise myself, once again.

¡Necesito otro ticket!

Saint-Exupéry’s plane crashes in the middle of the Sahara desert; with limited supplies and no hopes o “What is essential is invisible to the eyes.”
Saint-Exupéry’s plane crashes in the middle of the Sahara desert; with limited supplies and no hopes of finding help, his time is short to fix his airship. One day after waking up he finds a beautiful young boy playing on the sand, and starts to wonder if he may be losing his mind. Is he dehydrated and the boy a product of his imagination? Who is that little boy and what on earth is he doing in the middle of the desert? And why does he keeps asking to draw him a sheep?
One of the firsts books I picked up from my parent’s bookcase, if not the very first. A book I read during my teens and deeply LOVED, with a soul shattering ending that I never fully recovered from. To this day I think this is the first book I read with a devastating ending.
A book everyone should try to read at least once in their lifetime, but never force it. I think it’s essential for this book to come just at the right invisible time, and very important to keep an open mind about it. Don’t over analyze it too much, and it should be easy to enjoy. I think any kid can love it, or any adult with a healthy child at heart.
A must read in life. Extremely Recommendable.
*** The Little Prince (2015) is a beautifully touching movie that has much and little to do with the original work. This film is more of a modern retelling of what ‘The Little Prince 1 & 2’ would’ve been, if such a sequel existed. Still, of all the adaptations I’ve watched (which is to say the only one in this case ehem), it’s so VERY worth it. An extremely heartfelt animation and something any reader of the Little Prince would probably love. A fantastic film with gorgeous artwork and an amazing voicing cast. Very Recommendable. Just mind it includes a lot more stuff than just a plain adaptation.
