Edith and Hans Nelson are a newlywed couple settling in Alaska, working the land and searching for gold. Along with Harkey, Dennin and Dutchy they form a hard-working and efficient partnership, gaining plenty of riches in very successful season. Then the unexpected occurs.
This was a great Gold Rush short story and one of the finest I’ve read by Jack London. I especially enjoyed the discourse about life and living by the expected and unexpected. Also cool learning about Alaska’s involvement during the Klondike Gold Rush era. The plot was decently plotted and well carried out. Never saw the unexpected coming; and enjoyed plenty all the buildup tension between Edith, Hans and Dennin until the final resolution.
Overall a fine short story, with memorable quotes and moments. An almost-fav. Recommendable.
Recomendable.

Quite good for a short story. I particularly enjoyed Benny and Ellen, I think they made a cute couple; and Ted too, poor bastard. The ending was solid gold, or uhm, maybe silver.
This horror shortie is marked as the best of Harlan Ellison, and even though I did not love it, I can truly vouch for it. For meager 16 pages, I think it’s definitely worth the time. I mean it’s not wow; but it’s good, really good, for what it is. Looking forward to reading more of the author. Someday.

A short story collection by renowned Ambrose Bierce, classical master of ghost and civil war stories.
A fairly good collection overall; some outstanding stories, and a few duds too. Can’t never seem to escape the mixed bag rule; but tbh, the more and more I read of Bierce, the more I find him to be my preferred choice for short horror stories, even over Poe. His classicness is way more approachable, and even though they both deliver duds from time to time, Bierce’s I can live with; while on the contrary I really HATED some of Poe’s, to the point I sometimes wish I could unread them.

A man marries beautiful intellectual raven-haired Ligeia; and they live happily for a time, until she suddenly falls ill and eventually dies, some years later. When he remarrries, some time later, with Lady Rowena of Tremaine, the same thing seems to start happening again.
Not one of my favorites but still good. Whether it's Ligeia, Morella, Berenice, or Eleonora, Poe sure knows how to deliver a good tragic shortie with a beautiful lady and a killer blow at the end. Oh Ligeia!
¡Oh Ligeia!

William Legrand comes into possession of a very curious gold-colored bug that may or may not point to some lost secret treasure.
This was mostly ok; in a way this felt like Poe's version of Treasure Island. This wasn't necessarily bad, in fact it was intermitently captivating and interesting at times; yet, all in all, for my taste it did feel quite boring and extensively drawn out, even for a so called short story. Poe's "ratiocination" style works well with his Detective Dupin trilogy but it didn't feel right here. All the puzzle and deciphering stuff was pretty much a bore and totally skimmable for me. However, I did particularly enjoyed all the tidbits about Captain Kidd and his 'friends', and the piratey ending.
This wasn't my cup of tea but I still think this could have great appeal for the detective or Poe fan.

Mazzini and Ferraz have been married for a long time and work very hard to provide for all their children, but fate hasn’t been kind to them when a serious outbreak of meningitis leaves their four sons frail and mentally impaired. Yet fortune seems to smile them again when their last and fifth daughter is spared the disease and grows lively and healthy.
This was just PERFECT! Or almost! One of the best and shortest horror stories I’ve ever read in my life, deserving a special place among my best of short literature shelf. The horrifying ending scene one shocking image I haven’t been able to erase from my mind since the day I read it, already decades now.
I’m not a fan of Quiroga tbh, over time this author has given me enough duds to be wary of ever picking one of his books again; but this story, along with “El almohadón de plumas” , are two unforgettable short horror masterpieces I’ll always vouch and be grateful for; and can’t recommend them enough.

The best nonsensical series ever written by Lewis Carroll that immortalized Little Alice and her wonderfully crazy partners, like the White Rabbit, the Caterpillar, the Duchess, the Cheshire Cat, the Mad Hatter, the March Mare, the Red and White Queen, Tweedledum and Tweedledee, the Queen of Hearts, Humpty Dumpty and the Red and White Knights, among others.

Extremely Recommendable for lovers of this beloved childhood classic, or mentally disturbed readers who enjoy reading utter Nonsense.

Eveline’s brothers are gone, and so is her mom. At home, she only receives mistreatment from her father. An opportunity suddenly arises to leave dock for Buenos Aires with her lover, Frank, but she’s unsure. How to abandon everything you know?
As bad as Dublin may have been at the time I can understand her hesitation coming here, I mean I’m from Buenos Aires myself and all I ever wanted is to leave! But seriously, this story was mostly OK, which is practically high praise coming from me, since I heavily disliked almost everything Joyce ever wrote.

Marie Rogêt, a French young woman soon to be married, is found dead floating in the middle of the river Seine; possibly the product of a jealous party, or the evil doing of a band of ruffians. It’s up to Detective Dupin and his companion to try to determine the bottom of the truth.
This is the first murder mystery written based on true events! The murder case of Mary Cecilia Rogers, in 1841. Poe ever the pioneer.
This could’ve been a good story if it had included any action at all; rather than just conjectures, hypotheses, and ruminations over the falsehood and validity of a number of facts published in a bunch of newspaper articles. Dupin sure is an expert at putting every little thing into question, and that’s pretty much all he does in this fifty page story, that doesn’t even have a real resolution. Sigh. Can’t recommend it really, but it’s always a unique experience to know the very first of the first.

A deceitful Minister steals an important secret letter from the royal’s family, the police force, unable to retrieve it, no matter how hard they try. In their despair, and fearing time running short, they contact the great Detective Dupin in hopes of finding it, and catch the elusive thief.
A sufficiently good detective story; short, straight to the point and with a cool ending twist. This was as good as any average Sherlock Holmes story; in fact, in many ways it heavily resembles Doyle’s “Scandal in Bohemia”, and I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s where Doyle got his inspiration from. No Irene Adler here though :(.
All in all, a nice short conclusion to the series; I mean not great, but it could’ve been worse, much worse; like #2.
Aunque aquí no hubo Irene Adler :(.
In a Paris apartment, a lady is found dead, brutally slashed, not far the corpse of her daughter, stuck in the chimney; a The First Ever Detective!
In a Paris apartment, a lady is found dead, brutally slashed, not far the corpse of her daughter, stuck in the chimney; a seemingly unfathomable mystery to resolve, with a suspect and a murderer on the loose. It’s up to C. Auguste Dupin, an astonishingly intelligent amateur detective, and his reliable companion, to try solve the case, before the murderer escapes.
Can you believe this is the first modern detective story ever? AMAZING! Regardless of what one may think of the man or the genre, we owe it all to Poe. The inspiration for Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes, Christie’s Marple and Poirot, and countless others...
The infallible all-knowing detective, the faithful companion, the murder mystery, the near useless local police force, the clue gathering, and the inescapable ratiocination info dump at the end. Here’s where it all began. Every fictional detective that followed, just a better or worse modified copy.
Not a fav to be honest; remarkable as it may have been being the first, I ultimately think Dupin pales in comparison to Holmes, Poirot and Marple, to name a few. Dupin is just not that likable, and it just doesn’t measure up with the modernized versions we have today. Still, I find extremely INVALUABLE to know the original first, because it puts everything else into perspective.
It could be said Poe borne the detective, but Doyle made it humane, and Christie super cozy. Recommendable, for the inquisitive one.

Wow! And I mean WOW! This was excellent! This felt like a fantastic combination of the amazing quality of Hans Christian Andersen children’s stories mixed with the unbridled savagery of Charles Perrault’s fairy tales. A favorite and a place among my best of shorts shelf justly earned.
I read this as part of David G. Hartwell’s “The Dark Descent” best of short horror collection, which is by far one of the best short story collections I’ve ever read methinks. It also states in the introduction this story was a major factor in the inspiration of Neil Gaimans’s Coraline, which I really need to read asap.
I’m not surprised to see this story listed at the top of Lucy Lane Clifford’s page, because it IS THAT GOOD, what surprises me is that it doesn’t have way more ratings; because this tiny horror story of meager twenty pages that you can hardly call a book truly all deserves all the hype it can get. And if I didn’t give it 5 stars is because I think I’m way too judicious.
Well, that or I already forgot wth was that I didn’t like; because I’m writing this review like two weeks after I read it; which is more than enough time for me to forget stuff.
