Won't fit in 2 gang box with regular cover
This review is specifically for single pole smart switchEasy to wire, easy to set up with Alexa. However it is thicker than a regular switch and the standard decora cover plate won't sit flush to the wall. I'll need to use this switch in another location and buy a 2-gang smart switch.Edit: I was able to use a Dremel to grind out the ribs on the back of the cover plate and achieve a satisfactory fit.

I must admit, I approached the Amazon Basics Three-Way Smart Switch with a hint of skepticism, but it turned out to be a delightful surprise. As a master electrician, I hold my gadgets to high standards, and this switch delivered in spades.

The pairing process was a breeze, taking minimal time and effort. But what truly impressed me was the build quality. I was initially taken aback by-all plastic construction and how the chassis is thicker than the all metal counterparts on other switches. To my delight the switch sat flat on the box and the thickness still allowed the switch plate to lay flat.

After a week of use, I can confidently say it's a game-changer. Seamless integration with Alexa adds a touch of sophistication to my home. The switch feels durable and capable of standing the test of time. As a master electrician, I give it my seal of approval without any hesitation. Alexa integration at its finest.

Amazon Basics, you've got a winner with this one!

A little tricky to install since you have to test which 3-way switch in your home is closest to the fixture. Also wiring can be tricky since load wire on device is red, but load and 120V line in most homes in Canada are black or grey so it can seem weird connecting a red wire to black/grey wire, but only takes a basic understanding of home electrical wiring to install DIY. Note that the electronics takes up some space. I was able to install 2 within a 3-gang box, but I think 3 would have been near impossible to push all the wires behind. The switch also doesn't rocker like a normal toggle switch so it takes a bit of getting used to by just tapping anywhere on the switch.

3-way switch: I am not an electrician but have a lot of experience with wiring and always passed inspection. I am not responsible for anything you do after reading this. Many have indicated this switch does not work or does not give true 3-way function. That is not true.

This switch is not as straight forward as the standard switch single pole switch (review below). In my installation the "line" (black hot wire from the power source) wire and the load (black wire to the light) were not in the same switch box. I would have liked to put the smart switch in the box with the "line" wire but that is not possible with this switch. For a little more money you can get the TreatLife brand which does allow you to choose the location for the 3-way smart switch (you can place it in either end of the circuit).

When your hot wire is in the box other than the load wire, you will have to get a live hot wire to the box where you are placing the smart switch. This can be done using one of the two traveler wires. I recommend using the black traveler just to make this easy on yourself. When you start this process, you will have only one live wire in the two boxes. This will likely be the box furthest from the light. The box closest to the light should have the "load" wire in it (the wire that goes directly to the light). If this is not your scenario, you can stop reading now.

I removed all three wires from both "dumb" switches with the power off. Once you have all 6 wires free and definitely not touching ANYTHING and nobody around who may touch them (best to do when house is empty), turn the power back on and check all six wires with a voltage tester (non-contact) or a multimeter to make sure you have one, and only one, of the six wires (3 hanging from each box - 2 black and one red typically) live...this should be a black wire. Turn off the power and mark the wire as "line" with the supplied sticker. This is the box where we will put back an original "dumb" 3-way switch. This box should now have a black "line" wire, another black "traveler" wire and a red "traveler" wire hanging out of it. Look at the "line" wire in the and determine where it is coming from. It may be tied to other black wires with a wire nut or may have come straight into the box.

Now you need to get a live "line" to the box where the smart switch will go (this has to be where the "load" line is with this switch). Use the black traveler for this by tying it at the dumb switch box into the "line" wire you marked with the sticker (you still need the live "line" to connect to the dumb switch, so proceed in a manner that leaves a live pigtail to use with the dumb switch i.e. connect to the wires already connected by a wire nut at the other end of the existing pigtail if that is what you have, or connect the traveler directly to the live "line" coming in and tie this to a new pigtail to use on the dumb switch). Now you will have FIVE wires hanging out of the two boxes (2 at the "dumb" switch end, one of which is live when you turn on the power (the "line"), and 3 at the smart switch end, again one of which is live when the power is on). So now you have a hot "line" at both boxes. Test this to confirm, then turn the power off again.

Now you can start hooking everything up.
At the dumb end:
- black "line" you marked with sticker connects to dark/black screw of original dumb 3-way
- red traveler goes to one of bright brass screws (doesn't matter which one)
- don't forget to hook up ground, then this switch is done and can be put back in the box.
- (the original black traveler has been turned into a live line so not used at this end)

Smart switch end:
- connect the black "line" of the switch to the newly made hot wire that used to be a traveler (black wire)
- connect the "load" line of the switch to the line that goes directly to the light (this is a black line that comes into the box with a white wire and ground wire and that had NO voltage when you tested all the lines for voltage with everything unhooked and the power on)
- connect the "neutral" of the switch to the white wires in the box (there should be at least two of these already twisted together in the box, you will be adding the smart switch neutral to these)
- connect the switches traveler wire (brown) to the red traveler wire that is connected to the dumb switch at the other box
- finally, ground the smart switch ground wire

Wired this way, you will be able to turn on or off the light at either end, regardless of whether or not you have previously turned it on or off using voice or manually. Profit!

Std switch: Straight forward to install. Need a live wire sensor to make sure you have the right wire identified as "line" (this is the wire that is live when the breaker is on), and you need a neutral wire (in modern day North American wiring this is typically the white wire). As long as you understand those two things, this is pretty basic installation. Fit easily in switch box.

Hooking up to Alexa was very easy. App picked up switches immediately and a new gen Alexa Dot had no problem controlling the switch. Perfect upgrade to our voice automated home theater (previously lights were controlled by an IR based switch).

The switches work great too when they’re working. They work fine and then for no apparent reason they stop working. I’ve had them installed for two weeks and have had to reset them twice. This is the third time and they don’t seem to want to reset. I keep getting a message on my phone saying switch unresponsive. My bad. It was a wiring problem with the router. They’re working good now.

I have been using smart switches for about 10 years and this one was comparatively very easy to install and connect to Alexa. As with all smart switches, the size of the unit is bigger than a basic switch so they are a bit harder to fit inside the electrical box but this one was no better or worse than the others (I've used Wemo and TP-Link before). I didn't need to read the paper instructions but they seemed easy to follow. My only complaint is that as a dimmer switch (which works by adjusting the voltage) there should be a way to set the minimum voltage. What can happen is that the lowest voltage can cause lights to flicker (even dimmable lights). There should be a way to set the minimum voltage (in my case I need 3% instead of 1%). This would be a simple software fix.

Otherwise I would have given it 5 stars since it is on par with all the other smart switches out there and obviously has Alexa integration to create routines, etc. I will be buying more!

Nov 13, 2022 Update: the firmware seems to have been updated and I no longer get the flickering problem. Changed to 5 stars

5.0 out of 5 stars Love it.

Style: 3-Way DimmerVerified Purchase
I recently purchased the Amazon Basics 3-Way Smart Dimmer Switch and I have been extremely impressed with its functionality and ease of use. As someone who has been slowly converting my home into a smart home, I have tried out various brands and products, but this switch from Amazon Basics stands out as one of the best.

First and foremost, the installation process was surprisingly simple. I was worried that I would have to hire an electrician to install the switch, but with the help of the detailed instructions provided, I was able to do it myself in just a few minutes. The switch does require a neutral wire, so make sure to check your wiring before purchasing.

Once installed, I was able to connect the switch to my WiFi network and link it to my Alexa device without any issues. The 2.4 Ghz WiFi connection is strong and reliable, and I haven't experienced any connectivity problems or delays in controlling the switch with my voice commands.

The dimming function is one of the standout features of this switch. I love being able to adjust the brightness of my lights with just a simple voice command or through the Amazon Alexa app. It's a small but convenient feature that adds a touch of luxury to my home.

Another great aspect of this switch is its sleek design. The white color blends in seamlessly with my home decor, and the compact size (2.91 x 4.65 x 1.62 inches) means it fits in standard wall box. It also has a soft LED indicator light that is not too bright or distracting.

Overall, I am extremely satisfied with my purchase of the Amazon Basics 3-Way Smart Dimmer Switch. It's a high-quality product at an affordable price point, and the fact that it's from Amazon Basics gives me peace of mind in terms of its reliability and customer service. I would highly recommend this switch to anyone looking to make their home a little smarter and more convenient.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works well with LED lights
Reviewed in the United States on December 22, 2023
Style: Single Pole DimmerVerified Purchase
Bought this to control our under cabinet LED lighting. Works great! So nice to fluctuate brightness to have lights automatically dim when going to bed and bright when waking. Plus, the voice control is great. Installer was as easy as any dimmer device you’d buy from a store. Competitor products have the same limits. I like that one reviewer pointed out that a white wire must be present to use. Some wiring will leave white wires near the lights and then only have the black wires go down the wall into the switch. In those situations, this switch won’t work. It needs constant power to maintain connection. Without that white wire, that’s not possible.

Great product! Thankful a product on the market is finally at a more reasonable price and is still reliable.
