TP-Link AC2200 Tri-Band Smart Hub & Whole Home WiFi Mesh System | Coverage up to 4,500 sq. ft | Deco M9 Plus(2-pack)
From the Manufacturer
Deco m9 plus delivers seamless wireless connectivity to the entire home. It improves upon tri-band Wi-Fi systems with TP-Link one mesh, which combines dedicated and dynamic backhaul technology for stronger performance. And it introduces ZigBee and Bluetooth smart home radios for connecting and controlling smart devices without extra hubs. Maximum wireless transmission rates are the physical rates derived from IEEE standard 802.11 Specifications. Range and coverage specifications along with the number of connected devices were defined according to test results under normal usage conditions. Actual wireless transmission rate, wireless coverage, and number of connected devices are not guaranteed, and will vary as a result of 1) environmental factors, including building materials, physical objects and obstacles, 2) network conditions, including local interference, volume and density of traffic, product location, network complexity, and network overhead and 3) client limitations, including rated performance, location, connection quality, and client condition. MU-MIMO capability requires client devices that also support MU-MIMO. TP-Link HomeCareTM powered by trend MicroTM (homecare) is included for 3 years from date of activation at no additional cost, after which would require an opt-in subscription at an additional cost. Opting-Out of this subscription will disable certain features. For a complete list of homecare functionalities go to the homecare page on the TP-Link website.

There was a problem filtering reviews right now. Please try again later.
On my old system, which was a router and a number of satellite access points, things were good but I was experiencing an issue with some slow transmission speeds, persistent troubles with smart switches and plugs losing connectivity, and a number of SSID names to manage. So far, that seems to have disappeared with the Deco mesh system, and it is really nice to have only one SSID to deal with. I also like that the "Guest Network" is now broadcast equally throughout the house.
I am still experimenting with the "Smart Hub" feature of the Deco M9 system. I haven't found a great advantage to this over just managing my smart devices through their various apps, but time will tell.
Not that I seem to need it, but I also want to experiment with using a LAN connection between some of the nodes, and the possibility of adding an access point using an old third party router (or if needed a Deco node) in our pool area. This area is removed from the house and is traditionally hard to service. In the past I have used a network extender that plugged in outside, which was ok but not great.
The only issue that I came across was that my Ecobee3 thermostat would not connect to the Deco wifi. Apparently the Ecobee devices are not compatible with a mesh system. I just connected it to an SSID that I created on my IP router to get it back on line. The only concern here is: 1. Another network SSID shows up 2. The thermostat is not within my home network and thus cannot be controlled using my Google Home, so I just use the Ecobee app. I believe that Nest thermostats are compatible with this mesh system.
Overall, very happy with the Deco system.
WIFI MANAGEMENT and SECURITY: The Deco application is also easy to use and allows you to add parental controls and manage QoS. It also comes with an antivirus and Intrusion prevention systems.
OVERALL: My signal WIFI strength has improved A LOT and most importantly no more dead zones. It's a bit pricey but if you are currently having WIFI issues this will most probably take care of it.

The major points that I decided to buy Deco M9 Plus are:
1) it supports WiFi 5 (but not WiFi 6). My home has Spectrum with 200MB (or maybe 300MB, but it's definitely not 1GB) of speed. So, I didn't think WiFi 6 would increase the network speed dramatically, compared with WiFi 5. The existing router supports WiFi 4 (802.11n) only, so I would definitely need to upgrade to at least WiFi 5.
2) It includes one router & two satellites (these three are identical). My home is relatively small, one floor at around 1500 square feet. So, you wouldn't think you need three devices. However, there were reasons to get three devices. First, in this pandemic era, my wife and I work at home and my son take remote classes where all of us sit at different places. It often happens that three of us are online with video at the same time and I frequently experience my online meeting showing "connection unstable" and being cut off. So, I thought I would need at least two devices one of which would be placed next to the modem in the master bedroom and the other be in the living room where I sometimes work. Also, I recently replaced the old, outdoor deck with a walled deck (though it's not counted as a room as it does not have AC/heater). The deck is located furthest from the existing 5-years-old router and the wifi network didn't reach. So, I thought I would need another satellite placed closest to the deck so that we can watch streaming videos etc on the walled deck!
3) It is a tri-band router. I read a lot of online reviews and I learned the tri-band router would provide faster and more stable network than the dual-band one.
4) It provides nice parental controls. While many mesh routers advertise on parental controls, the features and depth of the controls vary. For example, a mesh router from another brand supports only the filtering by URLs at the network level. Another product supports basic features for free but need to pay a subscription fee for advanced features. Deco M9 Plus provides a reasonable set of features for free. You can register each of family members and choose one of the pre-set filtering rules (e.g. Kid, Pre-teen, Teen etc), which define what services / contents / web sites will be blocked, and adjust the rules if necessary. Then, assign the device(s) to the family members. You can also set length of time to be online and "bed time". So, this is the device-level controls, which I thought is good enough for my family.
While most of the mesh routers currently on sale satisfy #1 and #2 but the selections get fewer when combined with #3 AND #4 at a reasonable price. Or you would have to buy a very expensive mesh router at $400 or more (and you may need to pay a subscription fee for parental controls). Deco M9 Plus covers all 4 points at less than $250 and TP-Link products receive many good reviews. So it was a natural choice for me. I knew that TP-Link would release another product (X90?) soon that supports WiFi 6 with all other decision points of mine covered. But again, I don't think I would need Wifi 6 at least for a near future.
I bought this a week ago (the beginning of March 2021) and set it up very easily. The mobile app was very nice and easy to follow. There were no complicated settings. Just plug it in and wait until the device is found. The important tip for the setup is that you better write down the existing network's SSID (network name) and password before shutting it down. Then, while you set up Deco M9 Plus, you can enter the same network name and password so that your devices (laptops, smartphones etc) do not need to change the wifi network and enter the password to re-connect.
After Deco M9 Plus is set up, I compared the WiFi network speed using an online performance test site. Good news is that at every corner of my house, the connection speed is around 200Mbps, which is around 150% faster than the old router! Even on the walled deck, the speed is close to 200Mbps, around 150 ~ 190 Mbps.
So, I'm very happy to choose Deco M9 Plus. It provides everything I need at a reasonable price. The network speed is amazing, the parental controls provide features good enough for my family's needs, the mobile app is very user-friendly and even the packaging is very nice, impressing me that it would be an expensive product!
While this produce is highly recommended, I have a couple of requests for future improvements. I wanted to have three Ethernet ports at least on the main router that is connected to the modem. I work at home now and brought my work PC at home. So, I have two desktop PCs that I want to wire-connect to the main router. Because each router has only two ports (remember the main router uses one of the two ports to connect to the modem), I can't do that. Instead, my home desktop is connected wirelessly, which is OK but not ideal. Another request is that I want to know the details of filtering rules. I would choose "Kid" level for my son's device that he uses for remote learning. The Kid level blocks "Online Communication", "Social Networking" and "Media" along with others. But there is no detailed information on what services / web sites are actually blocked, so I wonder if I choose this level, the app he uses for the remote learning may be blocked and the web sites including Youtube.com that he needs to access to do homework may be blocked, too. I'm asking this on the TP-Link's user forum but I haven't gotten a clear answer yet. So, for now, I chose "Pre-teen" level for my son. Also, the filtering control may better have a feature for "whitelist" in addition to "blacklist", so you can add particular services / web sites to be allowed.
That being said, again, I'm very pleased with the quality of Deco M9 Plus!!
UPDATE:
I was able to turn the previous router as a switch. So, now my two desktop PCs are wire-connected to the switch which is wire-connected to Deco M9 Plus that works as the main router to the modem. So, the connection looks like:
Two PCs -> Switch -> Deco router -> Modem -> Internet (all wire-connected)
There were a couple of settings I needed to apply to the previous LinkSys router but main setting was to choose "Bridge Mode".

Using this for 8 months now and still rock solid. Most of the negative (or neutral) reviews are due to reviews lack of knowledge, or their disappointment that it's missing some advanced feature that 99.999% of home users could care less about. I'm very tech savvy, 25+ years as a network/telecom systems integrator, designing and configuring business network and telecommunication systems from the ground up. The last think I want to do at home is work on my network.... I just want to plug it in, configure a few settings and it work. That's exactly what this is.
Original Review:
This product was just released and installed, so these are my initial thoughts... I will update this review if/when my experience changes.
First, I can't imagine a router installation being any simpler. The included Quick Start Guide, is a booklet about the size of a business card, with one simple instruction repeated in every language known to man... That instruction is (I'm paraphrasing) "Download the app, and follow the instructions". Anyone who can download an app and read, can have this up and running in no time. I AM NOT EXAGGERATING!
The app is very well done, and makes advanced features like QOS, and Parental Controls simple for anyone to configure and use. With this app, you can manage your network using your mobile device from anywhere in the world, assuming you have an internet connection. I'm not sure if you can configure/manage through other means (web-browser, etc...); I haven't attempted it, because the app is so convenient and includes everything I need (much better than the Linksys app).
Although it's still early in my testing, performance is noticeably improved over my previous router (Linksys AC3200/EA9200 Tri-Band).
I have A LOT of devices on my network... (6-Laptops, 1-PC, 1-NAS, 8-SmartPhones, 3-Tablets, 1-XBOX One, 1-PlayStation 4, 1-Nintendo Switch, 7-Bose SoundTouch Speakers, 5-Arlo Cameras, 4-Tivo's, 1-SmartThings hub, 3-Amazon Echos, an Ecobee thermostat, a Rachio Sprinkler Controller, and some WiFi light switches). In my household (of 6), it's not uncommon to have 2 or 3 online gaming sessions, streaming videos, streaming music, and web surfing all happening simultaneously.
After installing the Deco's, the first thing I noticed was my Bose SoundTouch app and speakers (which have always been flaky) became very responsive and trouble free (again it's still early). Also, there's a noticeable improvement in areas were the WiFi signal begins to drop off. With the Linksys, in areas where my device would indicate a weak signal (25%-50%) the device would be very slow (1-5 Mbps downloads) and unstable, switching between WiFi and LTE. With the Deco, in areas where devices indicate a similar weak signal, it's still very stable, and performance is decent (20-30 Mbps downloads). Also... These areas of degraded signal strength are further out with the Deco's compared to my previous router, as the Deco's do cover more area.
For reference. I live in a single story, brick home (constructed in 1971), with 2800 sq ft of living space, plus an attached 2 car garage, and covered patio. I first connected only a single Deco, and tested coverage. The single unit was able to provide WiFi coverage to my entire living space. It would begin to drop off outdoors and in the garage. The single Deco's coverage was about the same (maybe a little better) as my single Linksys, but was much more stable. Adding the second Deco, increased the coverage and extended it to my outdoor spaces, garage, driveway, etc...
I'm still playing around with placement of the second unit.
I bought these on "Prime Day", and while several other mesh systems were discounted that day (Netgear Orbi, Linksys Velop, etc...) and I could have saved almost $100 with one of those, I choose the TP-Link. The main reasons was the security features offered. This system includes 3 years of Antivirus, Intrusion Prevention, and Content Filtering, in addition to some pretty slick QOS and Parental Control features.
Having these security features on your router doesn't mean you don't need antivirus on your computers. It's meant to be an extra layer of protection and for protecting internet connected devices that can't have antiviurs installed, like smart TV's, WiFi Speakers, and Smart Home Hubs/Devices, etc....
The Deco M9 also has a built in Smart Hub, which allows to to connect zigbee devices such as sensors, light bulbs, light switches, etc... and create automations and notifications based on triggers. I did set up an automation to notify me when a network security threat is detected, but haven't had any triggers yet, so I can't say how well it works. I probably won't use an other automation features, as I already use Samsung SmartThings and I think it has more features and supports more devices than the Deco M9. Although, it can be a great way to introduce your self to this technology without having to invest a smart hub.
So to recap...the system is super easy to install and manage, looks good, performs well, covers a large area, and includes a comprehensive and robust suite of security, QOS, and Parental Control features, plus a built in smart hub. Oh.... and it also has a 2 year warranty (most have 1 year, or worse 90 days). What more do you want?
If there is one negative that I found, it's that the units are not wall mountable without purchasing a third party wall mount kit. Seems like they could have easily included some mounting holes on the bottom to give customers that option.

Some background:
Purchased to replace a single Nighthawk AC1900 Router in our Condo (~1000 sq feet) for a 200Mbps speed internet plan.
While Wi-Fi signal was "good/great" in most areas, the download speeds dropped to about 50% (!00 Mbps or less) as you moved away from the Router.
It had to penetrate a bathroom (lots of pipes), utility closet (furnace, washer/dryer, water heater, etc) and other walls to get to the rest of the place.
Performance:
I placed the main Deco in our master bedroom (where the old single router was), 1 in the second bedroom and 1 in the main living room.
Signal strength is now almost always 100% in each area of our place now and download/upload speeds are nearly 100% (full 200Mbps) constantly. The furthest area in our kitchen does drop a tad (around 170-180 Mbps), but I will take it!
Each deco has 2x1Gig ethernet ports on it for hardwired connections, which work wonderfully, but aren't really needed as the Wi-Fi works wonderfully so far, with 15+ devices connected so far, including 4 phones, 3 gaming systems, 2 PC's, and 3 Fire Sticks
I have ZERO complaints from the family with streaming/gaming/working, etc now. Network has been very stable
Setup:
Easy as can be, I had zero issues with setup once I downloaded the App and setup a TP-Link account.
I have seen some other reviews where people had issues, but I followed the App's instructions step-by=step and was up and running with the first Deco in less than 5 minutes.
Adding the other 2 units took less than 2 mins/each.
The App itself makes it easy to setup profiles with parental controls (adding individual devices to each profile and limiting things like steaming, social media, adult content, time limits, etc).
You can rename each device on the network to give you a better idea of what each one actually is and you can see what actual Deco it is connected to.
You can also see a list of websites visited and block specific ones if needed.
While it is not the most complex set of options, it works as intended and should suffice for most.
Not sure how in-depth or effective the anti-virus portion is, but time will tell.
I believe the Tri-band feature of this Mesh system is what makes this work so well.
While it does not support Wi-Fi 6 (many devices don't support this yet), the Wi-Fi signals it does support work very well (5 and below).
One last thing - it does not clearly state this in any of the advertisements or description, but this is a Deco M9+ system - not to be confused with the Deco M5 which pops up in searches frequently. It was almost impossible to find this on Amazon, but I am glad that I did. It's well worth it for the price and 3 units.
I would definitely recommend this Mesh System for improving coverage, while maintaining speeds, in apartments/condos. I cannot speak for the claim that it will work for 4000+ square feet though.
It has drastically improved our Wi-Fi situation
