Useless as a wired access point. Mediocre wireless performance.

Useless as a wired access point. Mediocre wireless performance.
I'm trying to set up file sharing for my home network across multiple computers, and unfortunately the file sharing performance across Wi-Fi for my current router is very poor, around 20-30mbps (not MB/s).However, when one device is connected via ethernet instead, the file sharing performance is amazing! So, I thought, why not get an extender, just to use as a wired access point, and that way, my router no longer has to both send and receive via wireless. The router can send OR receive via ethernet, and the extender can send/receive via wireless. So, I got this product. Its specs aren't amazing, but based on what the product page says, I should be good to go with my setup. Long story short, while this did help me troubleshoot if my setup would work (it did!), it also made me wish there was more information about this available. Because, nowhere on the product page nor the box of this extender does it state that the ethernet port ONLY does 100mbps. And, even if the port was capable of more, I have doubts that it could reach anywhere near the full potential. Even though the extender was maybe around 10ft closer to my laptop than my current router, my laptop's Wi-Fi card saw more signal from my router than the extender.I could easily see this removing dead-zones where your router is for sure unable to be connected to. But as an access point, it is entirely unusable for anything over 100mbps, which hasn't been the standard for modern networking in a very long time.

Works great, not difficult to setup, extended 2.4 and 5ghz to middle floor and basement (router on top 3rd floor). Now able to get a good signal in the garage as well.

Tether app suggests certain routers of the same to use auto connecting feature (for best signal depending on where you are) but most smart products will automatically detect the best WiFi signal anyways and auto connect regardless.

Years ago, I purchased a wifi extender and had poor results, so I was reluctant to try again. However, I was pleasantly surprised with this one as it was much easier to install and it works perfectly. Our wifi modem is on the other side of the apartment, so there is a wall in between the modem and my office desk. This extender is plugged in beside my desk and consistently holds a strong signal. Sometimes, during weather like strong wind, snow, or heavy rain, it drops to a medium signal, but in my area, it's normal for the internet to go wonky when the weather is kicking up so that is not indicative of the hardware.

I do love the tether app ...makes installation a snap. Most reviews here said that this thing not only worked but made a huge positive difference.
So i can't explain why this device was a total failure for my use case scenario over a few days of trying.

I placed it (re315) 1/2 way from router to devices that have weak coverage (20 feet). The device said it was perfect position and to go ahead. I have a Bell homehub 2000 and just 50 Mbit/s connection. So should have been easy.
in Wifi mode, the signal strength would be 20 percent (or more) less than the router itself. Only right next to the re 315 extender, would the signal be 100 percent .. (router at 95 so the one exception). The re315 device would drop connections after a short time.
So then i rebooted into access point mode ...using a lan cable from the router. I rebooted again to make sure functioning correctly.
Despite being 20 feet physically closer ... the signal was only 2 db higher or just the same as the router (so a slight improvement over wifi mode).
But the speed test was worse (than just from the router) ..in multiple locations.
I bought another surge protector so i could orientate the antennas of the re315 in different directions.
But my results were no better no matter the orientation (well non existent if i pointed one antenna down horizontally and left other vertical while trying from one floor below).

In the end, i have just decided to swallow the eyesore of running ethernet cable all the way to the far devices that have some issues. I will give this device away at some point and report if others have any better success.
One of the advantages of this extender is that it is fairly cheap ... and so the experimentation was worth it.
I now agree with most that wifi extenders are just not worth it.
It is just a mystery why so many people here have had the opposite experience as myself. I am just glad that it has worked for others at least. Unhappy that i am not one.

5.0 out of 5 stars SOOO MUCH BETTER THEN THE NO NAME WIFI EXTENDER I BOUGHT FIRST.
Reviewed in the United States on November 1, 2022
Style: AC1200Verified Purchase
I bought this to replace a cheap, no-name WiFi extender that i bought based off decent reviews. Brand CUU 2022 newest WiFi extender booster repeater 4000 sqft- blah blah blah. It was $2 more than this, the size of a pack of cigarettes, single band (2.4G) and only rated for 300mbps. I’m betting it came right from T e m u or A L I E X P R E S S and someone stateside just ordered a bunch and doubled the price. That was a mistake. The ONLY job the extender needed to do was boost the signal for an Amazon Firestick that’s plugged into the back of my old tv that i brought into the garage i dispatch out of for work. I work for a large utility company, and we garage out of a building thats an old converted airplane hanger. We sit around in the morning waiting for our work, and then again at the end of the day when we do or timesheets - so we wanted to be able to watch the news or whatever else during that downtime while we are waiting. The router is only about 70 feet away, but a hallway also separates it from the TV, so the WiFi signal has to make it through 2 concrete walls. Without an extender the tv would constantly buffer, just stall and lose signal, or the image quality was horrible. Basically it was unusable. We were unable to watch anything without it constantly having issues every few minutes. So not being a tech guy - i bought (what i thought was) a real cheap extender figuring anything would be good enough for ONE or TWO device connections. The difference in build quality and performance (so far) between my first purchase and this model is huge - and this was $2 cheaper. First off this is dual band, so it does both 2.4G and 5G bands. The 1200mbps rating (from what i understand) is the combined signal capacity, but you wont actually get that since you have to pick one of the two network signals its going to provide you with. So to be clear - It actually gives you two different WiFi networks you can connect to (maybe thats beneficial to someone, i have no idea). I know enough to know the 5G should be better. I installed this via TP’s tether app (i think thats what it was called), and even for someone like me, it was painless. The instructions are very clear and self explanatory once you launch the app. All you need is your router’s password, and obviously the name of its WiFi signal. After install and connection, youll get two more new WiFi signals that you can pick from to connect onto. One will say EXT on the end, and the other will say EXT 5G or something similar. I picked the 5G to connect my phone and Firestick to. Hooking up the Firestick to this was just as easy. Whats cool with the app, is you can even monitor and control WHO and WHAT is connected to the extenders network. So if someone else jumps onto it, you can block that device. It’ll show you how many devices are connected to each band (they show up as 2 different WiFi signals on the app), what type of devices they are, and like i said - will let you block individual devices from being able to use the new WiFi signal. If nothing else itll be fun to mess with the other 20 guys i work with if they figure out how to connect to it lol. I can literally sit there with my phone and turn their WiFi connection on and off if they jump onto this. But yea, what you get with this (a name brand unit from what I’m told) is leaps and bounds above what i just returned, and it was basically the same price. I just hooked it up today, so its still early - but so far the Firestick is working fine on a 4K tv. Picture quality is great, nothing is too slow to load, and most important the Firestick hasnt been buffering or had the signal stall out at all. And remember - its extending a signal thats behind 2 cinder block walls with heavy metal doors - so probably a bit more than youll have to deal with in a house. If it starts giving me any issues - i will report back. So far I’m much happier with this then the last purchase. So happy i didnt give up and just keep what i first bought. Its hard these days will all the fake reviews for products - and I promise you this is a completely honest and no BS review.
Not that i tried them all, but youll have 3 different options on how to connect this to your router. I suggest scanning the QR code in the instructions, downloading the app and installing it that way. If nothing else it’s pretty cool to actually be able to SEE who and what is connected to your new signal.

Edit: Ok so its been about a month now. My opinion of this product has not changed. The Firestick/tv has experienced some VERY minor buffering very infrequently, mostly in the morning when everyone is in the building (probably peak traffic for our router) so for me to claim it “never” buffers wouldn’t be accurate. Its most definitely not something that I would even attempt or consider addressing given my particular situation and conditions. Its not like I’m using this for anything important, i just wanna watch tv instead of listen to people complain. Our router is running half of our construction garage with close to a dozen desktops in different rooms just on our side of the building. Every tech has company tablets, so thats at least 20 guys just in my group alone that are splitting their signals between cell service and WiFi when they are close enough to jump on it. Just making the point our router is already handling way more stuff then anyone would experience at home, so some VERY infrequent hiccup on the Tv is easily forgiven in my eyes under these circumstances. The day after thanksgiving we only had about 5 guys in, and we were held back in the garage all day just to respond to any emergency call that might come in. I streamed the News, then John Wick 1 and 2 off Tubi with the Firestick and it was rock solid the entire time. I wouldn’t not hesitate for a second if i needed one of these for home.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works even better with powerline adapter
Reviewed in the United States on August 3, 2021
Style: Wi-Fi 6 | AX1500Verified Purchase
I was surprised by the bonus that if you have a TP-Link powerline adapter already in place (I use a set of 1Gbps adapters to provide internet access to a PC that doesn't have WiFi) then this will use powerline networking instead of WiFi to connect to your router. So I can put this wherever I have a power outlet and get about a bandwidth of around 400Mbps via 5Ghz WiFi.

Also because of the powerline adapter, I can use the extender's network port to get around 550-600Mbps with no latency when I connect my laptop. Your mileage will vary on this, it depends on how many "noisy" electronics are plugged into the circuit and whether you have decent electrical wiring in your home.

Setting up the extender is easy. You might have been told you need a TP-Link WiFi router for this extender - you do not (mine is an Asus RT-AX86U). All you need to do is download the TP-Link tether app on your phone, plug in the extender, wait for its lights to turn on then let the app find it and set it up. The app walks you through connecting the extender to your home WiFi network, then syncs it. Once this is done you can move it and plug it in about 1/2 way between your router and the area in your home that you're having connection problems.

If you want seamless connectivity, you'll need to rename the two networks it creates in the tether app. It creates a new set of 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz SSIDs with _EXT - so you can identify whether you're connecting directly to the router or to the extender. Removing that _EXT from each network will create a continuous network throughout your house. Only thing to remember when you do this, is it creates the same problem you get when you give the same SSID (name) to your 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz networks. Mostly everything is fine, but every now and then a device will hiccup and not know which network to connect to.
