What motivates you to work? It’s different for everyone. “Passion shouldn’t be the standard to which everyone is held when we’re asking what they do for their job, and expecting a good answer, says Erin A. Cech, Associate Professor of Sociology at the University of Michigan. “People have a lot of different motivations for why they work hard.” The better question to ask yourself, Cech says, is: “What’s the relationship to paid employment I want to have?” What’s yours? How did Spotify build an algorithm that actually seems to know what music you want to listen to? By consistently pushing to improve the experience for listeners. “We built similarity vectors between songs and playlists,” says Spotify Co-President, CPO & CTO Gustav Söderström. While these similarity vectors offered unique discovery experiences for listeners, the product still had limitations. "We had no genre understanding," says Soderstrom. To solve this challenge, Spotify acquired The Echo Nest, an intelligence company skilled in classifying music. “Then we could start building great sessions where we could actually promise you that this is going to be Swedish pop, or this is going to be this vibe, not just these songs are similar in a vector space," explains Söderström. Which products or companies have you seen leveraging AI in forward-thinking ways? One in ten cars sold in 2023 in the U.S. were electric, according to an analysis by the International Energy Agency (IEA). That means new electric car registrations in the U.S. increased by more than 28% from 2022. What’s more? A new LinkedIn's Economic Graph analysis shows that the electric vehicle- skilled workforce is growing alongside sales. The share of U.S. automotive industry workers with at least one electric vehicle related skill is 4.5%, meaning almost five out of every 100 auto industry workers possess skills like battery management systems and automotive engineering. That’s grown by almost 15% from 2023 to 2024. LinkedIn members who are adding these skills to their profiles are most likely to be based in certain metro areas, including Detroit, San Francisco and Los Angeles. This aligns with where electric vehicle heavyweights are based, including General Motors, Ford Motor Company and Tesla. How can employers best train talent for the EV transition? What EV-related skills should workers prioritize picking up? Weigh in below. ✍️: Taylor Borden 📊: Akash Kaura, LinkedIn's Economic Graph 📸: Getty Images

What’s the best way to measure productivity? “An activity-based definition of productivity is not working anymore,” says author Cal Newport. He believes "a long-term results-oriented definition of productivity" is what we need. “In an outcome-driven productivity world, people can actually be valued for their expertise,” instead of how busy they are. How is productivity defined in your workplace? Tell us in the comments. Try this 5-minute productivity trick 👇🏽 Author and productivity expert Ali Abdaal used to keep a five-minute hourglass on his desk, which he considers “one of the highest ROI purchases” he’s ever made. Whenever he’d find himself procrastinating, he’d turn over the hourglass and say to himself, “I’m just going to do this until the time runs out.” Yet, Abdaal rarely noticed when the five minutes was up—by that point he had become fully engrossed in the task at hand. “The way we overcome inertia is by literally just making it as easy as possible to do the thing for five minutes, says Abdaal. “If we can just do whatever we can to just get started, chances are our productivity will take care of itself.” Listen to Ali Abdaal’s #EverydayBetter episode with Leah Smart here: 🎧 Apple: https://lnkd.in/gbuWtYSt 🎧 Spotify: https://lnkd.in/gSjZBS5S
