The Energy Program Intern is a key member of the environmental team and the Building and Infrastructure Energy Management Program (BIEMP), bridging between the Sustainability Program Manager, the Engineering Project Manager, real estate property managers, and maintenance staff. The Intern must develop an understanding of Port processes including maintenance, engineering, and real estate functions. The intern assists in monitoring changes in building energy use to determine the effect on greenhouse gas emissions and potential impact to the overall Climate Action Strategy goals. The intern is responsible for ensuring all required reports and supporting documentation are submitted to relevant state and local agencies including the Department of Commerce and PSE. This includes reporting to remain in compliance with the Clean Buildings Act. The Intern assists with the PSE’s Commercial Strategic Energy Management Program (CSEM) to ensure maximum incentives are earned.

Functions
  1. Tracking initial energy use intensity (EUI) assessments and following up on documentation and reports needed for Tier 1 & 2 buildings by the CBPS.
  2. Managing necessary data such as building energy usage analyses and providing recommendations for behavioral changes. Recording the recommendations on a building-by-building basis.
  3. Working with maintenance and facilities staff to prioritize, plan and implement construction projects.
  4. Recommending behavioral changes for the CSEM incentives and working with Port energy efficiency committees for effecting changes.
  5. Reporting to the Department of Commerce for the Tier 1 and 2 buildings for CBPS (e.g. operations and maintenance plans, Energy Management Plans and Washington SAW reporting)
  6. Reporting to PSE on CSEM progress.
  7. Collaborating with utilities (Puget Sound Energy, the City of Blaine, and Cascade Natural Gas) and Port accounting staff and consultants for data management and regular updates.
 Required Qualifications:
  • Strong knowledge of best practices for energy use in a variety of buildings and industrial activities.
  • Coursework in energy management, CEM, or related field.
  • Experience in MS Word, Excel, EnergyCAP and Energy Star Portfolio Manager.
  • Have an understanding of engineering design and technical aspects of HVAC, building controls and/or lighting systems.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Experience in data tracking including gap analyses.

 

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Public outreach experience
  • Experience with HVAC systems
  • Associate’s or Bachelor's degree in energy management, CEM, or related field.
 Skills:
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate across diverse teams to meet objectives and timelines.
  • Possessing excellent software skills and ability to learn new software
  • Ability to link building energy use to climate action goals and targets
