While major industries and services around the globe were sidelined by the cybersecurity firm’s glitch, it also derailed the normal to-do lists of tech-dependent residents and local businesses across Greater Boston. “One simple update from CrowdStrike just crippled the entire planet,” said one resident who works at a Kendall Square biotech office.

Any discussion of the housing crisis quickly turns to the culprits: high construction costs, restrictive local zoning laws, and, for the past two years, a sharp spike in mortgage rates. Another pivotal factor is less frequently discussed: just how much rising prices have outstripped earnings growth, putting homeownership further out of reach for even more Americans. In my latest Trendlines column for Boston Globe Media, I explain that while the Federal Reserve appears poised to begin cutting interest rates in September, sky-high property prices mean the corresponding drop in mortgage costs will provide only modest relief to prospective home buyers.

A fake liquor license? It happened to Craft Food Halls at Studio Allston during what supposed to be a routine transfer. Read more 👇 The innovative 🍺 pour-your-own beer-and-wine concept is already up and running in five other locations including Dorchester (Morrissey Hall at the old Globe HQ) as well as in Waltham and Lexington (Revolution Hall). I got a chance to meet Gardy Desrouleaux at his Waltham location to see why so many are excited about his "elevated" beer hall. He and his partners are also planning to open in the Seaport next year at the World Trade Center.

In the latest Trendlines newsletter, Boston Globe Media columnist Larry Edelman highlights how the dream of owning a home will go unrealized for many of us, unless zoning regulations change in the near future. Workers in New England who earn less than the minimum wage can only afford to rent a one-bedroom apartment in just two ZIP codes. Both of those ZIP codes — 04457 and 04462 — are located in Maine, according to newly released data by the National Low Income Housing Coalition. The Coalition’s 2024 Out of Reach report, which was published last week, shows that despite cooling inflation, rising wages, and a low unemployment rate, low-wage workers and other renters continue to struggle with the cost of rent. A populist Republican senator from Ohio who grew up poor and graduated from Yale Law School, JD Vance has made clear in speeches, interviews, and writings that he believe universities are at the root of the country’s divisiveness and inequality. Now poised to become vice president if Donald Trump wins the election, Vance may be in a position to act on those convictions. What exactly that could mean for higher education remains to be seen. But many in academia worry his ascent could usher in a period of heavy-handed government intervention.
