🚭 Smoking kills! But not for the reason you might think… 🔋 Ever heard of "Vapcells"? We hadn't. But when we saw that these 2170 cells used in vape pens were packing a whooping 5.6Ah 😮, we got curious. So we bought a couple dozen and CT scanned them. 😱 Check out what we saw on the Glimpse Portal (link below). Most of them showed buckled jellyrolls! Just like electrode overhang violations - see our previous post -, jellyroll buckling can lead to lithium plating, which in turn can lead to the creation of an internal short in the cell ⚡❗. Trying to cram too much energy in battery cells can lead to internal mechanical failures. Jellyroll buckling is one example of such failures, in which energy-dense electrodes swell over life and build up so much pressure that the jellyroll ends up folding in on itself. ⚖ Great example of the constant tension between cell performance - here, energy density - and cell quality - here, mechanical failure. https://lnkd.in/d7VkWgcv
