I don't say this often nor lightly but this book had zero redeeming qualities. Having read and loved Big Little Lies (a bit to my surprise!), I was excited to read Moriarty's newest work.
In BLL, her characters were attaching and made me care about their stories. In this one, I'm assuming she meant for the characters to not be so loveable but damn... I also hated how much shit the "Instagram model" got. We get it, you judge them and their plastic surgeries, no need to mention it every time she appears.
The "twist" that happens at 55% made me put the book down because honestly at this point the book is a fucking mess and I can't see how this will improve.

I loved Dark Matter and the Wayward Pines series so I might be extra salty here but, if I hadn’t read these books before this one, I would have DNFed it after a few pages.
The premise was intriguing. People that saw an aurora borealis go crazy and kill people. Okay. I like post-apocalyptic books… But the premise was the only good thing here. That and the fact that the author is good keeping you at the edge of your seat but… The writing, the characters, the dialogues… were just straight up bad.
I'm not a violent person and I would never wish harm to anyone... but I was hoping the children here would die. There were insufferable.
The ending was not satisfying at all. I wouldn’t recommend this to my worst enemy.
I think I’ll stick to reading his newer books from now on because they were much better....more

I don't need to know that the character's penis is getting hard while staring at the boobs of the woman he's interviewing about the death of her husband (twice in 3 pages!).
I don't need to know he's half-ass masturbating back in his hotel room.
I don't need to know about the boobs of every female characters, especially if you're going to call them "elusive globes".
I don't need a cringy sex scene and all of this before page 120. I just don't.
This was sold to me as a great sci fi book with clones but it read like a bad porn written by a 15yo. Not for me.
I've read a lot of uncomfortable books but I guess this is where I draw the line. If you're into step-parents being in sexual relationships DNF at 60%
I've read a lot of uncomfortable books but I guess this is where I draw the line. If you're into step-parents being in sexual relationships with their step-children, then this is the book for you.
I still recommend his other books, specifically The Kind Worth Killing but this is a hard pass.
Update: Since people can't take a joke. It's not the relationships that are the problem, it's the pace. After 60% barely anything has happened, I'm bored and not at all intrigued. His other books were simply better. The relationships seem to be there just for the shock value and I'm tired of that as much as the alcoholic unreliable wife. I listened to it as an audiobook, so it might have not helped but after raving about his work I'm extra salty about it!...more

The main character is basically described as a “loser”. He's 28, plays D&D, has no social skills, lives with his mom and has never gotten over his high school sweetheart... BUT WAIT he’s actually tall, muscular, hot and has multiple degrees!!!! Right.
I honestly don’t understand the hype. With a few changes it could have easily been a thriller/horror book!...more

I love reading classics but they are often very intimidating so why not read a quick, simple version of it to see how you would like it beforehand? This western fantasy has to be the most confusing book I’ve read in a long time. Some parts were more interesting than others but overall I was very disappointed.
After hearing everyone rave about this series I have a hard time understanding why. I don’t believe it would be this popular if it wasn’t for Stephen King’s name on it. There I said it!
I didn’t like the story very much nor the writing.
I had been warned that the first book wasn’t as great as the others but I’m currently not in a rush to continue....more

The premise was interesting. A girl uses a ouija board with her friend. She wakes up in the hospital not remembering how her best friend died. Paranormal things start happening…
But there were so many bad YA tropes I just couldn’t deal.
Conversations that would never happen between teenagers (come on nobody will quote a few sentences from Lolita just like that). Evil teachers that want nothing else but to torture you. Throwing chalk at you (although I’ve had a math teacher that told us he once threw a dictionary at a student back in the “good old days” when it was a boys only school). Her finding a way to prove how much better she is than said teacher when she becomes fluent in Spanish pretty much overnight… that only happens in your head, not in real life.
The love interest is a stylishly disheveled boy with a British accent that wants nothing else than the plain main character because “she’s not like other girls” (he actually says that out loud!). He wants nothing more than to make her “his”. Possessive and pretty violent. I got flashbacks from Twilight…
Said main character becomes arch enemy with the pretty popular girl just because. Plus she hates the girls wearing “slutty costumes” at the Halloween party…
Towards the end, I could see the potential but it was a complete fail. Part of me was curious to see where the series would go but after the ending, I don’t think it’s enough for me to continue the series....more

I don't mind unlikeable characters, heck I love them but it didn't feel I was supposed to dislike our main snowflake. So tired of the "strong" female character who can kill everyone in a heartbeat but she's tiny and incredibly pretty, she hates all other women and... Oh also everyone wants her... just because.
