Okay I am convinced that there are truly not that many good Viking themed books out there. Or they CLAIM to be about Vikings and then all it is is the man kidnapping the woman saying he wanted her the minuted he saw her and then forces her to marry him and then somehow eventually the woman falls for him. Yeah that was this book...again.
I gave it three stars because unlike other Viking books I've tried to read, this author at least did some research with some of the customs and names involved with the Vikings, so kudos for that.
I ended up skimming the last 20% of the book because I was just losing complete interest and hoping the book would magically transform into something that it wasn't.

I don't know if it is because Outlander has just soiled all other stories of Highlanders for me or if I am just truly not "into" the Highlander genre as it is written normally.
I have never been into the types of novels that come across as a "romancey" soap opera type book with the painted covers, etc. and anymore a lot of these highlander books feel like that to me with this one not being an exception. I just wasn't entertained, despite the fact that I listened to it on audio and heard the Scottish accent the entire time. The characters were rather one dimensional and I just couldn't believe that lead up to their eventual romance. Honestly I didn't even listen to the last hour of the book, but rather read to see what happened.
Eh, I think Outlander and Jamie Fraser DID ruin Highlander books for me. Can you BLAME me?

Honestly, you could have put ANY type of character in place of this Viking and it would have been the same. That is my only gripe...yes there were mentions of Odin and pointed hats, etc. etc. but I hoped for a bit more of the Viking culture. No I didn't want him forcing her against her will but a Viking worried about bathing her in scented oils and all that jazz? Don't think so, just saying!
I enjoyed it for what it was! Some well written smutty smut with a Viking undertone!...more

Seriously though! If you are a fan of the highlander romance category this particular novel should NOT pass you up! This story centers around highlander hunk, Drustan MacKeltar and Irish American smarty science nerd Gwen Cassidy. Does it tend to be a bit cheesy here and there? Of course...as any highlander romance is going to be but that's why we like them so much right? And this is also not an insta-lust type situation...well partially anyway, the burn was slow enough for me to like it and that's saying a lot!
So Gwen... [image]
Travels to Scotland to find her "cherry picker" and that does mean exactly what you think it might mean...she wants to lose her virginity and a Scottish lad sounds like JUST the right plan! (this is that cheese factor I mentioned) and at one point or another she goes off on a hike completely by herself...falls into a cave and discovers our slumbering highlander...how he came to be there, you'll have to read for yourself, but that scene itself is definitely funny and I enjoyed it! It is always fun to see a 16th century, kilt wearing, dagger assorted highlander walking through a modern day Scotland setting as well! Well really any kilt mentionings are always nice...
[image] The author also gives just enough Scottish accent writing to not make you wanna gouge your eyes out trying to "translate" what the characters are even saying. I clearly get the concept of "doona" now...and knew what bairn and laird could be from the context clues, so we're good! Also I like purple...but not sure if I like THAT much...Prince would be proud though, that is all!
I cannot get into TOO much detail as to not give away the plots and surprises and turns that the book takes but the sex scenes are spicy, "true love" attempts to conquer all and Drustan MacKeltar is definitely an alpha hero to be contended with. This highlander novel had just the right amount of cheese and made the heroine respectable enough to forgive her silly plans to lose her virginity to a complete stranger in another country...I'll forgive her just this once!
