I guess that was the part that made it more forgiving?
At any rate...despite this personal battle in my mind given this knowledge of the book's main theme...it was definitely a fun ride!
The hero, Lachlain:
Is Scottish...which you can immediately tell from the author's many uses of "doona" s and "ken"s within his dialogue, and also one of the last remaining Lykae AKA werewolves...though don't call him that because apparently the lore is just all completely wrong about them! I actually LIKE the lore of them turning into an actual wolf and not something that more sounded like the hybrid from Underworld: [image]
But he's been asleep for hundreds of years and in search of a mate, who of course happens to be our heroine. After all these years she finally comes about and then she happens to be from the species of his arch nemesis, the vampires! Dun, dun, dun!
Our heroine, Emmaline: [image]
Which I imagine having that face, for most of the story. She was a little whiny for my taste but at least she ends up kicking some arse on occasion through the story. So Emma is a vampire but she also happens to be from the Valkyrie line, which is different and cool and makes for some interesting developments!
Creepy forcefulness on the hero's part all aside, their relationship was dare I say it a bit...sweet? They truly start to care for each other after Emma gets over the whole, I am going to be forced into this no matter what aspect. Honestly, she had the hots for him the moment she laid eyes on him so the feeling of, "I found my mate." seemed to run strong on BOTH sides of the coin.
It is just a really fun book, with a unique love story and supernatural glee and the parts where Emma feeds off Lachlain are pretty freaking hot!

I mean vampires that wield katanas that are trained by sorcerers and they can eat normal food and...whaaaa. But, I took a step back and made myself realize that not EVERY vampire book can be like the Vampire Chronicles and that at least these vamps DO NOT sparkle. :) After I had this revelation, I actually very much enjoyed this story and actually feel a need to continue the series!! (that's rare for me)
So we have Merit: [image] Who is attacked on her college campus by a vampire and is saved by another vampire turning her into a vampire before she dies. I LOVE Merit. She's the perfect heroine to me. Intelligent, confident, and doesn't take crap from anyone but can still be loyal and strong! The vampire that turns her is...
Ethan (who I seriously just could NOT, not think of Alex Skarsgard for him because Ethan reminds me a lot of Eric Northman, blonde hair and all.): [image]
Ethan, oh Ethan...Ethan. I LOVED his character. Yes he is arrogant and yes he can be crass but that makes him all the more interesting because just like Eric Northman I feel like there's FAR more to his character then we get to know from the first book alone. So it is no wonder that Merit hates Ethan at first meeting but at the same time feels this unwanted attraction towards him.
There is Ethan but then there is also another vamp beau - Morgan: [image] Who Merit meets in a club and is quite smitten for, etc. etc. which then creates a parallel between the three characters, BUT no spoilers here!
The book explores her becoming used to vampirey things like drinking blood, living in the night, her keener sense, etc etc and her training to become an ultimate fighter WITH a katana mind you by the sorcerer, Catcher. All vampires are separated into houses in this book and its no wonder because of this division there will arise confrontations.

Parts of the book are predictable but it is just a fun ride, in my honest opinion. I LOVE the banter between Merit and Ethan, and I hope that this continues in the remaining books because HONESTLY - though I loved the story what is compelling me to read that next book soon is to see the developments that take place with those two. Definitely give it a go if you like vampires or supernatural romances in general!

I have a very clear understanding of what Anita Blake is like as a person simply due to Hamilton's engaging writing skills. I can tell this series is unique to other vampire stories and that is never an easy feat to pull off. I would've given it five stars but I SO wanted more of Jean Claude, and felt incredibly teased in the little we got to see him. One can assume that he's more prevalent in other books, but I wanted more NOW. :)
Great read for any vampire fans out there and quite frankly a breath of fresh air coupled with not being cheesy or over the top!...more

I was also forewarnSO I will start by saying that I was recommended this series by so many people it was just impossible for me NOT to give it a try. I was also forewarned by several people that the first one isn't as good as a lot of the others in the series, and if they know me the "instal-love/lust" in this first book could be a larger factor as to why this wasn't a full 5 stars for me. With that being said the vampiric environment that J.R. Ward has created deserves an applause from me because prior to this I had been faithful to Anne Rice's and Charlaine Harris's world of vampires and have not ran across storylines that I have liked and accepted as much as those!
The first in this series centers are the all around "King" of the Black Dagger Brotherhood named Wrath (I couldn't accept envisioning his hair coming to a widow's peak so I pictured this instead): [image]
Wrath was a likable character he's loyal, somewhat arrogant, ruthless, and will not kill a human unless they pretty much deserve it. My only issue is that he went from hardened warrior to lovesick puppy dog just a little TOO fast for my taste, but the ride was still enjoyable (pun possibly intended.)
Then you have your heroine, Elizabeth or as she is more commonly called in the book, "Beth". Who is a half human/half vampire hybrid that may or may not have to go through the "transition" of becoming a true vampire.
Beth is resistant to Wrath's advances for well you know a few pages so at least she has that bit of respect from me, but all of the sudden she's spreading her legs faster for him then you can say, "I vahnt to suck your blood."
Now why did I forgive this, smile and read on? Because in this vampire world those that could be good potential "mates" seem to have this electric attraction one another and you know I can dig that. Its a new vampire realm and they all have their quirks which makes them unique and enjoyable!
Overall I enjoyed this book but if I can be honest I am definitely more looking forward to the next book that revolves around "Rhage" as it sounds like the chase will not be as instant as Wrath/Beth was. All in all I can tell that I am going to love this series, the love scenes are steamy, all of the banter between the vampires within the brotherhood is quite fun, and the vampire lore is refreshing and something to look forward to. If you are a fan of vampires that hunt humans however this is not that type of vampire book these vampires survive off of the blood of the opposite gender of vampire, which is also different and yet accepting!

I am a stickler with my vampire stories as I compare them to Anne Rice style of vampires as it has been my favorite thus far. Though this doesn't drop to the atrocities I find in the Twilight series I only wish that her version of an "Immortal" couldn't walk in the daylight. I believe that any vampire like creature should at least not be able to walk in the sunlight, it makes mortality seem more worthy. ...more
