A short story collection by renowned Ambrose Bierce, classical master of ghost and civil war stories.
A fairly good collection overall; some outstanding stories, and a few duds too. Can’t never seem to escape the mixed bag rule; but tbh, the more and more I read of Bierce, the more I find him to be my preferred choice for short horror stories, even over Poe. His classicness is way more approachable, and even though they both deliver duds from time to time, Bierce’s I can live with; while on the contrary I really HATED some of Poe’s, to the point I sometimes wish I could unread them.

A somewhat disappointing collection to be honest. I rarely know or even remember where authors are from, so I was kinda looking forward getting to know some Cuban literature, but later now I rather feel this tiny used book is hardly the best place to start with. "Time has Descended" by Humberto Arenal was really good, emotionally crushing, and the best by far. "This Long Task of Learning to Die" by Ezequiel Vieta wasn’t exactly great, but it inspired me enough to write the layout for a short story of my own. I suppose "Che and Death" by Félix Pita Rodriguez is awesome if you enjoy fictional non-fiction (I do not) and/or you are fan of Che (also no). And the rest well, I’d rather forget, and probably will.

A short story collection by renowned Horacio Quiroga, master of classic Uruguayan horror.
It’s no secret Horacio Quiroga is frequently regarded as the latin american Edgar Allan Poe, and so far, from what I read, I would have to agree. Like Poe, Quiroga certainly has some amazing horror winners; nothing will ever erase from my mind the utter shock from reading the “The feather pillow”, or “The decapitated chicken”. Advised by his doctor, an ailing wounded Scottish soldier travels to the Spanish altitudes to relax, get some fresh air and recover. After some inquiries a family is found to house-guest him into their isolated mountain castle, but on the explicit condition that he always keeps a neutral distance. However, it all changes when he meets the wildly eccentric noble family living within. The curiously unstable son Felipe, the ever slothful carefree Mother, and her mysterious daughter, Olalla.
On the whole, this was a fairly decent Gothic horror story with all the feels of Le Fanu’s “Carmilla”, or Poe’s “House of Usher”. The kind that surprises you in quality, and leaves you wanting for more; more story, and more gothic. Although truth be told I have my reservations; Stevenson tends to extremely philosophical and religious sometimes. The classical style of writing a bit challenging, with a not so easy beginning, and a somewhat underwhelming ending, not to mention insta-lovey. The middle stuff was gold though!
Still, despite all of its shortcomings, all in all, this was quite an entertaining reading, memorable, and overall worthy; or very worthy, considering its meager forty something pages.

In Prehistoric times, after decades of hardships barely scrapping by, a handful of men ventured into the wilds trying to find a better home for their tribe. After years travelling the unknown, their prayers are finally answered when they manage to find a small piece of paradise in a faraway land. Years later, it’s now up to Rhôor “The Nimble”, a young teenage caveman, and his faithful companion cheetah “Tâa”, to return to their ancestral land, and guide its people to their new haven. A perilous adventure through unknown lands full of terrible dangers, hostile tribes, and no few amount of ferocious predators.
This was a decently entertaining reading; nothing out of this world, but fairly enjoyable on the whole. Rhôor, or Rhôor “The Invincible”, as he likes to call himself later, is quite a decent chap, for an illiterate caveman. He only kills when he has to, and dutifully respects the natural wildlife. Tâa was a lovely and fearsome companion, naturally wild, but faithful; their friendship endearing, and necessary, for both.
On their travels we get to know some amicable and hostile tribesmen, like Adar and the Tzeegs, Ktal and the Kowls, Asoo and the Asines (the former); and Ogra and the Fishermen, and Furious Bison and the Mountain People (the latter); and frightening beasts too, like unnaturally big bears, madly feral tigers and spine-chilling all powerful lions.
Not bad at all, for one of the cheapest used books I’ve ever bought; and it’s always a unique special pleasure when you seem to be the only one in the world to have ever read it. I wish there was a bit more of Nouk though, but I guess that was something that was left for the sequel, which I doubt will ever come across.

This was a reasonably acceptable collection, with some very nice winners, and its fair share of stinkers. Not exactly good, but better than ok I guess. Always so very grateful of finding 4 and 5 stars, even if the rest of it is crap, which in this case is nearly half.
Most of these stories share a common theme, which is life, and death; with just the tiniest touch of supernatural element. I think this is speculative fiction, but since it’s my first time encountering the genre I’m not really sure, could be magical realism, or maybe low fantasy? I remember some time ago reading “The Outcasts of Poker Flat” in a Classics Collection, which was rather good; not great, but Good. Sadly, can’t say the same about this collection; these stories felt way too similar to each other, all taking place in some remote foggy mountainous place in coastal San Francisco, with an unremarkable protagonist, and the appearance of some random mysterious stranger, usually bringing some sort of spooky mischief with him.
Although mostly Meh, this wasn’t necessarily a bad read. It was just too average for my taste, and very unimpactful, most of the time.
