In the midst of the women’s liberation movement, a little town in Connecticut seems to show an inexplicable regression. Independent women are turning into cleaning maniacs and dedicated housewives. What the hell is happening? Something in the air? The water? Is it a disease? Is it contagious? Walter, Joanna Eberhart and their kids are new in Stepford, but when she realizes something fishy going on, it all becomes a desperate quest for answers, before it’s too late.
For some reason this is marketed as a horror novel, but I found it to be much closer to a psychological thriller, and a very good one. Fast paced, and packing quite a punch. Very short, but extremely gripping. Everything moving so fast it’s over before you even know it. A somewhat too open ending for my taste, but a welcomed one overall. Joanna plays a wonderful heroine, and Bobbie a lovely and hilarious sidekick. Quite a bunch of feminist references too, which will be duly investigated at the appropriate time. Recommendable.
*** The movie (1975) is a great adaptation. Katharine Ross plays a convincing Joanna, but Paula Prentiss perfectly nails Bobbie and is the absolute best of the movie by far; so crazy, and utterly adorable. Not nearly as good as the book, but very faithful, several direct quotes can be found all through the film. An ending that goes a bit beyond the original work, and possibly gives a more satisfying answer to the mystery.
*** The remake (2004) is a terrible adaptation, and is critically panned for good reasons. Beside the protagonists and some general idea of the plot, everything else has been changed, and not really in a good way. No direct quotes, and lot of things added that doesn't make justice to Levin’s work. Not even a cast including stars like Kidman, Broderick, Midler, Close and Walken can save it. Points for some very funny moments, but very unfaithful to the book, and quite cheesy sometimes.

En el medio del movimiento de liberación de las mujeres, un pequeño pueblo en Connecticut parece mostrar una inexplicable regresión. Mujeres independientes se vuelven maniáticas de la limpieza y dedicadas amas de casa. ¿Qué demonios está pasando? ¿Es algo en el aire? ¿El agua? ��Es una enfermedad? ¿Es contagiosa? Walter, Joanna Eberhart y sus hijos son nuevos en Stepford, pero cuando se da cuenta de que algo raro está sucediendo, todo se vuelve en una desesperada búsqueda por la verdad, antes de que sea demasiado tarde.
Por alguna razón esto está identificado como una novela de terror, pero yo lo encontré mucho más cercano a un thriller psicológico, y uno muy bueno. De ritmo muy rápido, y con un golpe directo y certero. Muy corto, pero extremadamente atrapante. Todo transcurre tan rápido que termina antes de que te des cuenta. Un final algo demasiado abierto para mi gusto, pero dentro de todo bienvenido. Joanna hace una estupenda heroína, y Bobbie una adorable e hilarante compañera. Un montón de referencias feministas también, que serán debidamente investigadas a su tiempo. Recomendable.
*** La película (1975) es una excelente adaptación. Katharine Ross hace una convincente Joanna, pero Paula Prentiss acierta perfectamente a Bobbie y es absolutamente lo mejor de toda la película; tan alocada, y terriblemente adorable. No tan buena como el libro, pero muy fiel, varias citas directas pueden ser encontradas a lo largo del film. Y un final que va un poco más allá de la obra original, y posiblemente brinda una respuesta más satisfactoria al misterio.
*** El remake (2004) es una terrible adaptación, y duramente criticada por buenas razones. Más allá de las protagonistas y una idea general de la trama, todo lo demás fue cambiado, y no realmente de una buena forma. No hay citas directas, y muchas cosas fueron agregadas que no le hacen justicia a la obra de Levin. Ni siquiera un elenco incluyendo estrellas como Kidman, Broderick, Midler, Close y Walken lo puede salvar. Puntos por algunos momentos muy graciosos, pero muy desleal al libro, y bastante artificial a veces.

Ever since a child, Toby Temple always wanted to please a crowd, with his antics, jokes and his huge talent. He is going to be a big star, his mother said so. Toby is determined to climb his way from the lowest clubs to the top of Hollywood, making several friends along the way. On a parallel timeline, Jill Castle also trying to reach the stars, using her sensuality and acting skills, making several enemies instead. There is no limit to where these two can reach, what they can do, or what could happen if they ever cross each other’s paths.
This was simply AWESOME. Terribly amusing at times, incredibly f*cked up the next. Consistently engrossing. Equally entertaining and twisty. So utterly dark, possibly the most twisted book I’ve ever read. One unique read I don’t think I’ll ever forget. A plethora of quotes and moments to remember by.
This was my first Sydney Sheldon, and it’s certainly not going to be my last. You can easily see why he has such a following. I don’t know if all his books are as good as this one, but I’m sure more than willing to find out. Best used book ever.

Una desesperada búsqueda de estrellato.
Desde niño, Toby Temple quiso siempre complacer a un público; con sus mañas, bromas y su enorme talento. El va a ser una gran estrella, su madre lo dijo. Toby está determinado en escalar su camino desde el más bajo de los clubes hasta lo más alto de Hollywood, haciendo varios amigos en el viaje. En una línea temporal paralela, Jill Castle también tratando de alcanzar las estrellas, usando su sensualidad y sus habilidades de actriz, haciendo varios enemigos en vez. No hay límite hasta dónde éstos dos pueden alcanzar, qué pueden hacer, o qué podría pasar si alguna vez llegan a cruzarse en sus caminos.
Esto fue simplemente ASOMBROSO. Terriblemente emotivo de a ratos, increíblemente jodido al siguiente. Consistentemente fascinante. Igualmente entretenido y retorcido. Tan enormemente oscuro, posiblemente el más retorcido libro que he leído jamás. Una lectura única que creo nunca voy a olvidar. Una plétora de citas y momentos para el recuerdo.
Este fue mi primer Sydney Sheldon, y seguramente no va a ser el último. Se puede ver a simple vista por qué tiene tantos seguidores. No sé si todos sus libros son tan Buenos como éste, pero estoy más que seguro interesado en averiguarlo. El mejor libro usado por lejos.

An open door and a big mess is the only thing that is left in her place. Nick, her beloved and dearest husband, will be left perplexed with doubt about if it is a kidnapping, the scene of a terrible crime... or something else.
Several similarities with "The Girl on the Train" by Paula Hawkins. The diachronic style, the constant coming and going between the views of the different characters, and, to a certain extent, even the theme. And, like the aforementioned book, as gripping as few others. It creates that delicious addiction of wanting to know what is going to happen next, and several surprises that guarantee more than one plot twist. Highly recommendable.
Amy is certainly a character that one can hardly ever forget in a lifetime. She is in many ways, for very different reasons, plainly and simply: "Amazing". Disturbingly Amazing.
**** The movie is an excellent adaptation of the book, capturing much of its spirit. Most of the praising goes to the brilliant performance of Rosamund Pike, that got almost to the letter the "Amazing Amy" personality. Still, even so, the book felt superior. Certain differences, although minuscule, were noticed. But in the world of book-to-film adaptations, Gone Girl holds a very prestigious place. And very well deserved.

En esta novela conocemos la historia de "Asombrosa Amy". Una extraordinaria mujer que por razones desconocidas desaparece de su muy querido y acogedor hogar. Una puerta abierta y un gran desorden es lo único que queda en su lugar. Nick, su amado y preciado esposo, quedará perplejo ante la duda de si trata de un secuestro, la escena de algún terrible crimen... o algo más.
Varias semejanzas con "La chica del tren" de Paula Hawkins. El estilo diacrónico, el constante ir y venir entre las vidas de los distintos personajes, y en cierta medida hasta la temática. Y al igual que el mencionado libro, es atrapante como pocos. Genera esa deliciosa adicción de querer saber que es lo va a suceder después y varias sorpresas que aseguran darte vuelta la trama más de una vez. Muy recomendable.
Amy es ciertamente un personaje que probablemente uno jamás en la vida puede llegar a olvidar. Es de varias formas, por muy diversas razones, lisa y llanamente: "Asombrosa". Perturbadoramente Asombrosa.
**** La película es una excelente adaptación del libro, capturando mucho de su espíritu. Los laureles principalmente se los lleva la brillante actuación de Rosamund Pike, que capturó casi a la letra la personalidad de "Asombrosa Amy". Por supuesto, aún así el libro se sintió superior. Ciertas diferencias, aunque minúsculas, se notaron. Pero dentro del mundo de las adaptaciones de libros llevados al cine, Gone Girl ocupa un lugar prestigiado. Y muy bien merecido.

In this novel we learn the story of Rachel Watson, a young englishwoman, divorced and part time alcoholic. Everyday she travels by train, enjoying its harmonic pace, its unhurried sounds and the everyday regular people that she already feels she knows, but, above everything, she loves to watch the house number fifteen on Blenheim street, where lives her imaginary perfect couple, Jess and Jason.
Until one day her dreamy beautiful couple, for reasons we are not going to spoil, ceases to be. Something happens and nothing will ever be the same. Something happens and her already problematic life will change forever; her future, and the past she once thought she knew.
Starts somewhat slow but in short time becomes very gripping, and as the story progresses, it becomes even grippier still, maintaining that spectacular atmosphere from beginning to end. A certified good thriller. Hardly difficult to disappoint.
**** The movie is a faithful adaptation of the book. Emily Blunt delivers a remarkable performance, really worthy of recognition. However, due to several shortcomings, the movie is quite far to being as gripping or captivating as the book. A bad guy you can see coming from the very beginning, and several important omissions. Still, interestingly enough to complement the reading.

A veces la gente no es mala, a veces sólo simplemente toma una infinidad de malas decisiones.
En esta novela conocemos la historia de Rachel Watson, una joven inglesa, divorciada y alcohólica part time. Todos los días viaja en tren, disfrutando de su armónico andar, su parsimonioso sonido y la gente habitué que de tanto ver ya cree conocer; pero, por sobre todas las cosas, ama ver la casa número quince de la calle Blenheim, donde habita su imaginada pareja perfecta, Jess y Jason.
Hasta que un día su soñada maravillosa pareja, por razones que no queremos spoilear, deja de serlo. Algo sucede y nada volverá a ser igual. Algo sucede y su ya problemática vida cambiará para siempre, tanto su futuro, como el pasado que una vez creía conocer.
Empieza algo lento pero en poco tiempo se vuelve muy atrapante, y mientras más avanza más cautivante aún, manteniendo ese espectacular clima desde el principio hasta el final. Un buen thriller asegurado. Recomendable. Dificilmente capaz de decepcionar.
**** La película es una adaptación fiel a la obra. Emily Blunt hace un papel destacado, realmente digno de reconocimiento. Sin embargo, por algunas falencias la película está bastante lejos de ser tan atrapante y cautivante como el libro. Un malo que se ve llegar desde el principio y ciertas omisiones importantes. Aunque igualmente lo suficientemente interesante como para complementar la lectura.

This was in all honesty a solid 3 star fast paced thriller, the extra star being for the wildly unpredictable ending which absolutely blew my mind and would’ve never saw it coming not in a gazillion years. Both main characters were ok, likable, yet not lovable. The depicting of Africa and its people was highly compelling. And I really loved the ending twist and the new dimension it gave to the *romance*. I wouldn’t say this is recommendable, but it was close; highly enjoyable, pretty gripping and well worth the time.

Esto fue en toda honestidad un sólido thriller de 3 estrellas de ritmo rápido, la estrella extra siendo por el increíblemente impredecible final que absolutamente me voló la cabeza y que nunca hubiera podido ver venir ni en un millón de años. Ambos personajes principales estuvieron bien, agradables, pero no entrañables. Las descripciones de Africa y su gente muy atrapante. Y realmente amé ese giro de trama final y la nueva dimensión que le dio al *romance*. No diría que esto es recomendable, pero estuvo cerca; altamente disfrutable, bastante atrapante y bien valido el tiempo.

Several years after “Child 44”, Leo Demidov is the head of the newly created Homicide Department. Abandoning his old job at MGB, Leo is trying to leave his dark past behind as officer of the secret police to build a better future with Raisa and their two adopted daughters. However, the precarious stability doesn’t last long. After Stalin’s death, Khrushchev succeeds him with a speech full of reforms that will create that much chaos as the one intended to leave behind with the old Stalinist regime. The secret police were criminals, and the criminals were innocent. With an oppressed society for so much time under the reign of terror, everything will turn, giving away to hunt and vengeance to settle old scores. Leo’s past will haunt him again, and though he intends to protect them, him and his whole family will pay for it.
This was a very good sequel, although not as good as the unforgettable Child 44. Leo and Raisa two characters as complex and resilient as ever. The conflict with Zoya felt perfectly portrayed and real. The suffocating atmosphere and the danger at every corner making each page a potential tragedy waiting to happen. All the backstory behind Fraera was fascinating and her antagonism was masterful. An excellent continuation, fast paced, action packed, dark, gripping, harrowing, and memorable. Recommendable.

Abandonado su antiguo empleo en MGB, Leo intenta dejar atrá su oscuro pasado como agente de la policía secreta para forjar un futuro mejor con Raisa y sus dos hijas adoptadas. Sin embargo, la precaria estabilidad dura poco. A la muerte de Stalin, le sucede Khrushchev con un discurso lleno de reformas que creará tanto caos como el que se intentaba dejar atrás con el viejo régimen stalinista. La policía secreta eran criminales, y los criminales eran inocentes. Con una sociedad oprimida por tanto tiempo bajo el yugo del terror, todo se dará vuelta, dando lugar a la caza y la venganza para saldar viejas cuentas. El pasado de Leo vuelve a perseguirlo, y aunque intente protegerlos, él y toda su familia pagarán por ello.
Esta fue una muy buena secuela, aunque no tan buena como el inolvidable Niño 44. Leo y Raisa dos personajes tan complejos y resilientes como siempre. El conflicto con Zoya se sintió perfectamente retratado y real. La atmósfera asfixiante y el peligro en cada esquina haciendo cada página una potencial tragedia esperando suceder. Toda la historia detrás de Fraera resutó fascinante y su antagonismo fue magistral. Una excelente continuación, de ritmo rápido, con mucha acción, oscura, atrapante, angustiante, y memorable. Recomendable.

A physicist murdered in strange circumstances in Paris, a deadly innovative technology changing hands in Malaysia, an uncommon type of submarine released in the waters in Vancouver; everything points to an underground eco-terrorist organization and a massive worldwide conspiracy brewing from the shadows. Peter Evans, a lawyer investigating NERF, and Sarah Jones, a billionaire’s assistant, and a few others, the only people on earth that may be able to uncover the whole truth behind it and, if possible, stop it, before the world is torn asunder.
From Paris to Iceland and Antarctica, from Arizona desert to Los Angeles and the jungles of Solomon Islands. A massively scoped techno-thriller, blending science and fiction, like only a consummated author can deliver. Truth be told the protagonists are barely memorable at all, but the story more than certainly is, and by a longshot. This was my first and only Crichton so far and at first glance you can easily tell why the author has amassed such fan base and cult following. This was more than a decade ago and the chills of it still resonating strong with me.
This was a never ending nail-biting global rollercoaster from beginning to end, without stops. A globe spanning adventure and thought-provoking novel about the unavoidable dangers of global warming. Truly fantastic. Looking forward to reading much more of the author, someday.

La verdad que es que los protagonistas son bastante olvidables, pero la historia es ciertamente más que memorable, y por mucho. Este fue mi primer y único Crichton hasta el momento y a primera vista se puede apreciar fácilmente por qué el autor amasó semejante cantidad de fans y calidad de culto. Esto fue más de una década atrás y los escalofríos todavía siguen resonando fuerte en mí.
Esto fue una interminable montaña rusa para morderse las uñas desde el principio hasta el final, sin paradas. Una aventura de alcance global y novela provocadoramente reflexiva sobre los peligros inevitables del calentamiento global. Verdaderamente fantástica. Con grandes ansías de leer mucho más del autor, algún día.

When a child is found dead at some abandoned rail tracks, he is tasked to question the neighbors and close the incident. When evidence suggests a possible child murder spree, he finds himself in an impossible situation that will test the system and everything he believes in. Soviet Russia is a perfect society where everyone is happy; by default crime doesn’t exist, murders can’t happen, and serial killers even less. And to even dare investigate further would mean treason, putting his own life in danger, not to mention his wife, parents and everyone he loves. Meanwhile, the murders continue…
This is the best thriller I’ve ever read. I remember being so wowed at the time. Every chapter a new development, each chapter a new thrilling surprise. A terribly suffocating atmosphere of oppression, hopelessness at every turn, and yet also a never ending veiled fight against the impossible. Things spiraling so out of hand you thought there’s no possible way out of it, and yet there was. Dictatorships bring out the worst in people, and the best in those who try to fight it. So overwhelmingly gripping, unputdownable even. Leo and Raisa so simple and complex multi-layered characters. The theme was brutal, the events atrocious, and yet there was always the tiniest ray of hope to keep things forward. Few times I felt so invested in rooting for the win. So captivating and beautifully tragic. This is one of those books I always wish I could reread as the first time, and never dare to because I fear in my soul not liking it as much a second time around. For me this was a flawless masterpiece. Extremely Recommendable.
*** Child 44 (2015) is a lousy adaptation, and barely faithful to the book. A lot of scenes were added that had nothing to do with the plot, and most of the best stuff of the book was cut off. Gary Oldman and Noomi Rapace are two of my most favorite movie stars ever and even they couldn’t help me like the movie better. It was SO dull and boring I think I doze off a couple of times and didn’t even bother to rewind, which I normally do because I don’t like to miss a thing. This is seriously not worth watching, not even for curiosity’s sake. I sincerely wish I hadn’t. So please. DON’T. You’ll only regret it.

Este es el mejor thriller que jamás leí. Recuerdo haber estado tan maravillado en su tiempo. Cada capítulo un nuevo acontecimiento, cada capítulo una nueva sorpresa alucinante. Una terriblemente sofocante atmósfera de opresión, desesperanza en cada esquina, y aun así una encubierta lucha sin final contra lo imposible. Las cosas saliéndose tanto de control que pensás que no existe forma alguna de escapar de ellas, y sin embargo había. Las dictaduras sacan lo peor de la gente, y lo mejor en aquellos que tratan de combatirla. Tan arrolladoramente atrapante, sin poder dejar de leer. Leo y Raisa tan simples y complejos personajes a varios niveles. La temática fue brutal, los eventos atroces, y aun así había siempre una diminuta luz de esperanza para seguir adelante. Pocas veces me sentí tan entregado en alentar para que ganen. Tan cautivadora y hermosamente trágica. Este es uno de esos libros que siempre desearía poder releer como la primera vez, y que nunca me atrevo porque temo hasta el alma que no llegue a gustarme tanto en una segunda ocasión. Para mí esto fue una impecable obra maestra. Extremadamente Recomendable.
*** El Niño 44 (2015) es una mediocre adaptación, y apenas fiel al libro. Un montón de escenas fueron añadidas que no tenían nada que ver con la trama original, y lo mejor del libro dejado afuera. Gary Oldman y Noomi Rapace son dos de mis más favoritas estrellas de cine jamás y ni siquiera ellas pudieron hacerme gustar la película más. Esto fue TAN soso y aburrido que creo que dormité en un par de ocasiones y ni siquiera me molesté en rebobinar, lo cual normalmente hago ya que no me gusta perderme nada. Seriamente no vale la pena verla, ni siquiera por curiosidad. Sinceramente desearía no haberlo hecho. Así que por favor, NO LO HAGAS. Sólo vas a lamentarlo.

1999, year of reckoning. Massive climate catastrophes happening through all the face of the Earth. Three strangers born at the same time, but in different places, united by a cosmic bond. American Meryl, french Antoine, and chinese Sun Hon. Cosmic twins. Their fate depending on finding each other before it’s too late, not to mention the rest of the world.
This was a solid 2.5, something between good and ok. This novel had a lousy beginning, which was greatly compensated by a more than acceptable middle; much to my surprise it became quite gripping and thrilling, until it finished with a pretty disappointing ending. This was barely good enough to be worth the time. I don’t regret reading it, but I don’t recommend it. This one is going straight to the used book store, where it’ll become someone else’s pleasure problem.

Tres extraños nacidos en el mismo tiempo, pero en distintos lugares, unidos por vínculo cósmico. La americana Mery, el francés Antoine, y el chino Sun Hon. Gemélos cósmicos. Su destino dependiendo de encontrarse antes de que sea demasiado tarde, sin mencionar el resto del mundo.
Esto fue un sólido 2.5, algo entre bueno y ok. Esta novela tiene un comienzo bastante malo, que fue grandemente compensado por un más que aceptable desarrollo; muy para mi sorpresa se vuelve bastante atrapante y emocionante, hasta que termina con un muy decepcionante final. Esto apenas fue lo suficientemente bueno como para valer el tiempo. No me arrepiento de leerlo, pero no lo recomiendo. Este libro va directamente a la librería de usados, donde se convertirá en el placer problema de otro.
