The whole shebang. The entire 9 book Sherlock Holmes series by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, featuring arguably the best detective the world has ever seen, in his neverending adventures with his ever faithful companion, Dr. Watson.
Was it worth it? Yes. Would you do it again? No. As much as I’ve enjoyed it, this was not one of my favorite series, and even if it were... Life is too short and TBR too long to read books twice. But anyways, I have my badge of honor now, and nothing can take that away from you.
My work here is done. A door closes and another one opens. And now with perfect peace of mind I can finally move on to Agatha Christie, and back to my Hiatus.

Billy Budd is possibly the best sailor ever, skilled, respectful, athletic, good natured and charismatic; always happy to do his job, and help others with theirs. But his handsome qualities and warmhearted personality frequently shadows his peers, and arises the jealousy and resentment of others; one in particular. Sometimes you can see your enemy coming, but sometimes, your innocence may blind you.
This was one sad story, but overall worthy. Somewhat predictable too; I went in blind and got the feeling where it was going right from the start, and I wasn’t wrong, which I generally am. Must also note Melville is the ultimate expert in divagation and off track narration, taking the trouble to write many extra chapters to ramble about the most inconsequential things; and frequently incurring in tediously long convoluted descriptions like “Billy Budd is, against any ill thoughts anyone may have of him, for is the nature of people to sometimes judge without any well founded reasons, unquestionably and unequivocally, and without a single trace of a doubt, if such thing may even exist, an excellent sailor”, when he could’ve just simply said “Billy Budd is a good sailor.” Which is of course 99% less flowery, but, 200% less annoying. Ultimately I enjoyed the general idea of the book, yet no so much the way it was written. To my experience, so far, Melville has never been an easy read, not in English nor Spanish.
Can’t say I loved this, but I don’t regret reading it. For a used book, and a short one, it was worth it. Can’t really recommend it to anyone though, except maybe to a Melville or classics fan.

Occupied Vienna, 1945. Rollo Martins is a penniless author of cheap western novels barely scraping by, and always getting into incidents, especially with the ladies. His luck seemingly taking a good turn when his friend Harry Lime invites him to Vienna to spend some time. Rollo happily jumps at the opportunity and eagerly travels to meet his long esteemed friend, only to find him dead the day before. Dude can’t catch a break!
This was a fairly neat whodunit mystery. Not mind blowing by a long shot, yet not disappointing either. The Vienna of 1945 occupied by Soviet, American, British and French forces felt wildly contrived, but, to my surprise, bewildering realistic. Intermittently entertaining, occasionally amusing and sporadically funny. The characters and execution were done right, the ending left a bit to be desired. On the whole, just a sufficiently good enough novella to spend the time. Not a bad choice mind you, for a used book. You can always count on good ol’ Greene to give you a solid one.
Viena ocupada, 1945.

Does it sound ridiculous? Well, that’s because it IS; but ridiculously funny, most of the time. The hype is well deserved, undoubtedly for Book #1 at least. Recommendable, for lovers of Humor and Science Fiction.

During the peak of the american secession civil war not even the smallest fault was forgiven, and so called ‘traitors’ were routinely hanged to set the example for the rest. Peyton Farquhar is about to be hanged from a bridge, and accepting his unavoidable fate with moderate grace; but the tiniest of hope still holds strong in him. If only he can lose his bindings in the last minute and jump to the waters below, maybe, just maybe he can escape, and get to his loving wife and children, and embrace them, one last time.
This was a fine horror short story, ten pages quick, and fairly easy to read. Neatly wowing too. Another exemplary work by renowned Ambrose Bierce, and looking forward to reading more of the author someday. I didn’t enjoy it as much as The Damned Thing mind you, but it was Damn close. OH NO! Better not walk that path again. I’m gone. Damn Recommendable. Dang it!
¡OH NO! Dick Sand, young boy of fifteen and apprentice sailor, will rise up to the occasion and try to save the ship and its passengers from certain death.
A fantastic adventure (view spoiler)[ in Africa (hide spoiler)] like only the one and only Jules Verne can deliver. In a way this felt like Verne’s version of Treasure Island, but with much more than just pirates. 1920s, England. Wealthy fifty-one years old Mrs. Clarissa Dalloway walks the streets of London city and thinks about hosting one of her famed parties. Many socialites and part of the English high society are expected to attend. Peter Walsh, an old flame from the past, also arrives.
Man I HATED this with all my heart! This was two hundred pages of continuous ramblings, without any kind of discernible transition whatsoever! In a way it reminded me of that insufferable Faulkner; but the dreadful man at least learned to use chapters, and stuff happened! Boring as hell as he was some ‘memorable’ stuff occurred. Woolf however made this hateful book one never-ending chapter, with utterly unimportant recollections one after the other. I do have to give some credit to the woman and her writing for being much more potable than Faulkner’s though; not that ultimately that made it any more enjoyable.
You’d think a thing or two should happen in a book, but no; the whole story is just random flashbacks, and the ramblings and inner musings of Mrs. Dalloway, and every single person she knows. We get to hear what they like and don’t, who they love and hate, and why. And she ponders. They ALL ponder. (view spoiler)[. Blah blah blah x20. Clarissa walks the streets and thinks about throwing a party. Blah blah blah x20. Peter meets Clarissa. Blah blah blah x20. Now Peter walks. Blah blah blah x40. The party starts. Everyone is unhappy. I must say Woolf is insufferably descriptive too; if there’s a speck of dust on the floor she’s bound to describe it, and most assuredly compare it with other specks of dust, intrinsically beautiful specks of dust that for some reason may or may have not been important for someone in the past; but who are we kidding here? It’s still just a freaking speck of dust!
I recently became aware of the “Stream of Consciousness” concept and apparently Woolf is one of its biggest representatives. And to my surprise so is Faulkner and Joyce. No wonder I hated and 1-starred them all. Must conclude I’m definitely not the ‘Stream of Consciousness’ type of reader. But if you are, or you enjoy those authors, then you might probably enjoy this one too.
For me I wish I could say this is the last I’ll ever see from Woolf in my life, but to my great dismay I also happen to have her ‘Orlando’ book which I also ‘borrowed’ from my parent’s bookcase. It’s at the bottom of the pile now, but it’s still there. And its turn WILL eventually arrive. May God have mercy of my suffering soul.

Reina del Blah blah blah.
1920, Inglaterra.

Flora Belle Buckman is a cynic nerdy kid, fascinated with comics, and especially with her favorites about horrible accidents and amazing superheroes. One normal day like any other, minding her own business, she notices her neighbor cleaning her garden, and accidentally vacuuming a poor innocent squirrel. In the most unexpected turn of events, the little thing somehow survives, and is born anew as Ulysses, mighty super hero squirrel!
This was an awesome little thing, and a fantastic combination of genres, intermittently changing from novella to comic strips. Funny, with a lot of quotable moments, and overall quite memorable; but for reason I can’t quite explain I didn’t love it. Maybe the extracts from “Terrible Things Can Happen To You”, “The Amazing Incandesto” or “The Criminal Element” got too repetitive, maybe Flora’s cynicism or her mother Phyllis’s cruelty became too much, maybe the ending felt a bit unconvincing, and underwhelming. I dunno. I have a whole bunch of highlights and lovelt moments I take with me, many laughs all through, I have the endearing George Buckman and William Spiver, and I have the adorable Ulysses saving the day, and still I didn’t love it, and I just KNOW I should have. Weird. Maybe it just wasn’t the right time, or I was in the wrong one.
But anyway, I’m positive any kid or adult with a child at heart can overlook all that and love this quirky little story quite plenty. DiCamillo really knows her stuff. Easy a four or five stars methinks, for the lucky illuminated ones.

No sé.

This was very weird, the story, the format, and especially the ending. I don’t mind weird but when I’m not sure what I’m reading, weird is not that enjoyable. Having to read an explanation elsewhere to be sure of what you just read is never a good sign. I think the story is good, maybe even very good; but I think it could have used a few more pages to smooth some things over, and more discernible transitions between each diary entry. The ending was also way too abrupt and open ended for my liking.
Overall it's super quick and I think it’s worth the thirty minutes. A powerful take on mental health and early feminism. Quite interested in reading more short stories from the author, already have a collection ready.

Loved it. This book felt like reading a personal diary, or a story being told by a close friend. A very funny, sometimes very self-absorbed, friend. No overly complicated or flowery vocabulary, just something extremely down to earth. Deep, without trying. Masterful in its simplicity. Some parts dragged, especially chapter 20, or when she purposely tries to sound deep, but overall a wonderfully positive experience. An old abandoned house in East London, surrounded by trees and bushes, so long inhabited almost no one remembered it was still out there. But it was. An unwary vagrant enters it, totally oblivious in his own drunkenness, he never made it out. Something festers inside the house, and now, now it won't be long before it starts to spread out into the city, to feed again. And again...
Do you like rats? Well, you are certainly not going to love them more after this one. Nasty, gruesome, gory, just excellent. A few anticlimactic chapters, but other than that. Ratness perfection. It's everything you can expect from a rat horror novel. And then add some!

The Darkness, the evil Black Thing threatens to swallow the Earth and everyone in it, among other worlds and universes already corrupted by its malevolent presence. An enjoyable read, simple, endearing, and weird! Not exactly recommendable, but good enough to hold interest. The first of five moderately short books.
