1955, Caribbean Sea. Twenty years old soldier Luis Alejandro Velasco is part of the crew on board destroyer Caldas, traveling from the United States to Colombia. His life unexpectedly turning when a giant wave sent him and several of his mates flying to the sea, where he remained lost with little hope of being rescued.
A wondrous tale of survival based on true events, of how Velasco managed to survive lost at sea without food or water, in a poor state raft. Finally getting to safety when he reached beach shores ten days later, barely alive. A grand personality in his time, Velasco’s later life as much bleak as this fantastic tale, that launched Gabriel Garcia Marquez into stardom, and exile.
Another all-time classic by the immortal Gabo. A book probably every kid in Argentina had to read it at some point in school. After re-skimming it again decades later I can say that, although highly memorable, this is not one of my most favs of Marquez. Still, I’ll never forget how Velasco (view spoiler)[ had to watch several of his friends die, only few meters away and still unable to help them (hide spoiler)]; the two encounters with the seagulls were both endearing and tearing. and also I'll never be able forget how he tried (view spoiler)[to eat a shoe in order to survive.
Juan Pablo Castel is a lonesome painter obsessed with his paintings, and especially one with a tiny little window that nobody notices. Critics praise him, yet no one understands him. And when during an exhibition María Iribarne remains stunned watching the little window, Juan convinces himself that for the first time in his life he has finally found someone who can understand him, and save him. This diary is the chronicle of his 'love' ravings, his 'infallible' postulations, and his maddening obsession with his beloved María; and why he killed her.
This was pretty good. Very interesting to interiorize into the mind of a murderer, and experience from first person perspective his twisted machinations. The first third of the novel was masterful and even funny at times, five-star worth. The crazy thoughts and spontaneous outbursts of Juan were truly amazing. Nevertheless, once he meets María everything turns much somber and difficult to digest. Juan progressively becoming tedious, posesive and extremely toxic, and most of that original magic gone. But even after losing that marvelous initial impulse, it still keeps interesting enough and moderately gripping until the tragic ending, which by the way I found too abrupt for my liking.
A pretty brief novel, but unique, and very intense. Recommendable. I may read more of the author someday.

¡Esa maldita ventanita!

Annie Ernaux, daughter, student, aspiring author and mother, dissects the personality of her father, that loving and scary figure many of us had and someday might even become. From childhood to old age, trying to find a place in a society he belongs and doesn’t. And in doing so, taking him part by part, we discover everything that made him be, parent’s parts we may even recognize, in ours.
You have to admire Ernaux skill to write in a so detached and emotionless way, like an anchor reporting the news. Still, I for one need to have emotion in my readings, either be love or hate, but something at least, otherwise I might as well feel more inclined to read a pamphlet of trending furniture instead.
Also I must note memoirs have never been my thing. and this one was no exception. But at least Ernaux’s are very short. Some interesting quotes here and there, but nothing memorable that will truly stay, at least for me.

France, 1963. Annie Duchesne, university student, 23, suddenly realizes she’s pregnant. What follows is a desperate quest for a place and someone to perform an abortion, in a country where it’s illegal, and the chances of infection and other health risks very high. A harrowing little memoir about the dangers of clandestine abortion, in a time when such topic was only whispered with fear and secrecy.
I’m probably not the right audience for this type of book, I generally dislike memoirs; and I suppose Ernaux is a great author, being the receiver of the 2022 Nobel in Literature; however, I can’t say I enjoyed this at all. Some good quotes and very powerful paragraphs here and there, but hardly worth it when you have to endure so much rambling and being utterly dull when she tries to convey some supposedly deep insight.
I really tried to sympathize with her situation, but it’s very hard to like a person when she makes so many merits to greatly dislike her (view spoiler)[, like being toxic with many people around her; deceiving her parents and proud of being an excellent liar; being extremely detached, caring only about herself and little else; taking a trip and going skiing blowing part of the money generously given by a friend for her costly operation; the list goes on (hide spoiler)]. Points for treading a touchy subject with honesty and moderate grace, and a gruesome depiction of clandestine abortion and after effects; still, far from easy to read, and not recommendable, unless you happen to be very interested in the subject.
*** The movie (2021) is a great adaptation, vastly superior to the book imo. No artificially profound insights, and an Annie not exactly endearing, but most of what made her unlikable gone. Some small and big changes regarding the plot, but nothing that felt out of place, except maybe the shower scenes. Unlike the book, the movie has a lot of heart, you can connect with the character, and share her pain. Some very nice moments, and gruesome ones. Recommendable, maybe very. Forget the book, watch the movie.

No es para mí.
Francia, 1963.
Recomendable, tal vez mucho. Olvidate del libro, mirá la película.

Young Amélie-san, recently returned to Japan, through great pains secures a one-year job contract as a translator at the prestigious Yumimoto Corporation. What follows is a mildly rocky start to a full speed spiral down the corporate ladder to the worst experience of her life.
An amazingly engaging and hilarious start, five star worth. Around the middle however, as events start turning for the worse, it became a bit difficult to read and highly exasperating sometimes. All the characters, like Ms. Fubuki Mori, and especially Mr. Omochi, were extremely unlikable. Mr. Tenshi was the only redeemable one, yet sadly his protagonism was too short lived. One is left to wonder how someone like President Haneda got to the top.
This was greatly enlightening about certain aspects of the Japanese work life, and especially about a western trying to accommodate to their customs. I think the inability to defend yourself, or others, is a free pass to a world of mistreatment. Some very excruciating moments, and a few ones way over the top. Some of it may be overly exaggerated of course, yet sadly I’ve watched certain movies, heard several things, and even read enough news to know the harsh reality described in this book is partly true, if not completely.
I find the Japanese culture fascinating, although the corporate side, if it resembles anything like this, is one aspect I truly wish I never EVER have to face. Still, good enough to spend the time, fun, and valuable. Could greatly appeal to someone interested in the subject.
*** Fear and Trembling (2003) is THE perfect adaptation. I mean except for a few aerial shots, a few childhood flashbacks and the music score, everything is 100% the book, without any deviations whatsoever. I don’t think there was a single dialog line not extracted directly from the book. Amazingly, Fubuki, Omochi, Tenshi and Haneda were exactly as I had pictured them. Not necessarily a great film, 7/10, but by far the most faithful adaptation I’ve ever seen methinks.

Loved it. This book felt like reading a personal diary, or a story being told by a close friend. A very funny, sometimes very self-absorbed, friend. No overly complicated or flowery vocabulary, just something extremely down to earth. Deep, without trying. Masterful in its simplicity. Some parts dragged, especially chapter 20, or when she purposely tries to sound deep, but overall a wonderfully positive experience. I start to think memoirs are not my thing, didn't care much for Poehler's, Fey's or Barrymore's. I've found them all somewhat interesting, yet not really enjoyable. I've never watched SNL. I know it's there, I know it's cool, I know I should watch it, but it doesn't really air over here so. Anyway, I'm positive this would totally hit it with any SNL fan. Amy Poehler is one badass dudess, you can tell even if it is your first time hearing her, and she's probably gonna make you smile or laugh in many chapters, specially if you are fond of her.

Sometimes for some unexplainable reason an earworm plagues your mind. You set on a quest to find an unknown song with only a few lines you barely understood from the lyrics. You find a band you never heard of, and a beautiful song, with a heartbreaking story behind it.
This song is Pandora's Box. This is the story of Louise Brooks.
A haphazardly organized memoir about the not so shiny side of Hollywood: sex, drugs, alcohol, celebrities, opulence, jealousy, falseness, the costs of stardom. A wonderfully captivating beginning, a hardly interesting development and a more than acceptable ending. Ephemeral flashes of superb writing sprinkled within mind-numbingly quantities of boredom. Maybe this book is better suited for someone who actually knows at least some of the celebrities mentioned here, or is interested in the history of the early days of Hollywood. Not my case though, now I realize, I just liked the song. I am yet to find a memoir that I truly like.
*** I can count the silent films I've watched with only only one hand so my opinion is very partial. All I can say is that, considering 1929, the movie appears to be very well thought and decently made. And Louise Brooks clearly steals the show.

I started th Every now and then you hear an Audiobook to mix things up a bit, and what could be better than the voice of a major celebrity to do it?
I started thinking this was a novel but it turned out to be a random and non sequential autobiography of Drew Barrymore's life. Going through a childhood with a dissimilar mother and a distant father; ET and the explosion of fame; the court emancipation and the turbulent teenage years; her relationship with Señor Spielbergo, Adam Sandler and Cameron Diaz; the family, the husband, the children. And a variety of anecdotes, projects and personal opinions, among other things.
It's interesting to know the backstage of a celebrity's life, but in this case it turned out to be sooo tedious. It's one thing to read AARRGGHHHH in text, and quite a different one having Drew literally screaming AARRGGHHHH to your ear. Repeatedly! Also, I don't mind some good swearing, as long as it is done with style and wit, but there seemed to be an abundance of 'f*ck this' or 'f*ck that' without much reason. Lastly, according to Drew everything and everyone is lovely and the best in the world. Now I'm as much optimistic as the world allows me to be, but it is one thing to be optimistic and a very different one to paint everything pink. It is easy to talk about the things we like, but a lot harder to talk about the things that affect us most. Maybe an opportunity was lost to explore more deeply all those dark parts of her life; there were certainly several major scandals along through it.
Overall, very cute, but not really recommendable. Maybe just reading the book could have been better. I enjoyed the novelty and some anecdotes here and there. I love the actress, but no so much the author. And I'm sure I will keep seeing her around. '50 First Dates' is still one of my all-time favorites.<3.

"Bossypants" is a little memoir about the joys and setbacks through Tina Fey’s life. From childhood to adulthood; and her crazy family life. From her first jobs to SNL and 30 Rock; and her beginnings in comedy. Tina goes through a variety of serious and not so serious subjects, sometimes even random; but almost always through humor. It was a very nice touch to have this on Audiobook and hear it from Tina herself.
Certainly entertaining and funny, to an extent. I knew Fey to be a comedian, writer in SNL, and creator of Mean Girls. This memoir would have probably been a lot nicer if I had ever watched at least an episode of SNL or 30 Rock, something still not happening to this day. I’m also not a fan of political humor, which is abundant in many occasions. I think this would totally hit it with any SNL fan, so if that’s your case, you may want to check this one out, or Amy Pohler’s “Yes Please”.
Overall I liked it, but it is not one of my most memorable reads. I cherish some very funny bits, some tips about professional and family life, and some very interesting knowledge about the hardships of the comedian’s life. And maybe a thing or two more.

Last book, posthumous, of the great Cousteau, legendary marine explorer, ecologist, scientist and activist for the protection of the oceans and all its living creatures. This book contains a description of his life, the adventures of its famed ship Calypso, and a detailed explanation of his admirable philosophy; going through various subjects such as: the risks of marine exploration, sea plunder and devastation of marine fauna, nuclear contamination, the links with religion, philosophy, politics, statistics and science methodology when dealing with oceanography; the future of the Earth, and the beautiful miracle of life, amongst many other things.
This book is a passionate cry for conscience about the terrible and massive destruction carried by humankind over the oceans. A desperate request to protect the Earth, the seas, and all its beautiful forms of life; to create hope, for future generations. A call to take action, before it’s too late.
I specially loved the last two chapters, “Life in a Billion Years” and “The Human, the Orchid and the Octopus”.
Still remaining, his most famous book: “The Silent World” (1953), and the documentary that followed (1956).

"Amo a Jacques Cousteau!"

Nazi occupation of Netherlands, 1942. Hidden in the secret upper annex of an office building with several oth Possibly the best personal diary ever.
Nazi occupation of Netherlands, 1942. Hidden in the secret upper annex of an office building with several other jewish people, Annelies Marie Frank was thirteen years old when she started writing Kitty, her personal diary. In it, she poured all her thoughts about life, love, and the daily life with her family and other refugees. The diary coming abruptly to an end in 1944, when everyone was discovered and sent to concentration camps, where she died of typhoid fever in 1945 at the tender age of fifteen.
I don't think this is a literary masterpiece by itselft, but it can very rightfully be considered one of the most historically relevant of its time. Through the simple and loving words of Anne Frank we get to know how she and her sister Margot, her parents Otto and Edith, Mr. Pfeffer and neighbors Hermann, Petronella and Peter Van Daan survived years of hunger, hardships and strained relationships hidden in precariously small living quarters with the constant threat of discovery and subsequent arrest or death. Vivid, thoughtful, tearing and touching words of a promising young lady that had much to say and live for and whose life was tragically cut short.
Anne can come off as a bit childish, and even bratty sometimes. But considering the circumstances, who wouldn’t feel a bit emotionally edgy after a few years of forceful confinement? (I’m looking at you Lockdown!). I remember Miep Gies very fondly, and my heart also goes strongly for Margot, who didn’t get to be as lucky as Anne, circumstances considering.
By all accounts, one of those visits one must make at least once in a lifetime. A powerful message on the resilience of the unbreakable human spirit, despite a world of cruelties and horrors happening all around it. Extremely Recommendable.
*** The Diary of Anne Frank (1959) is a fantastic adaptation. The plot more than reasonably faithful to the book. Aesthetic, acting and pacing very good. A little bit too long on the length for my taste, but the extra time is more than worth it. Millie Perkins playing possibly the most memorable version of Anne. Shelley Winters also gaining some very well deserved praise. And the ending! Gosh! That. Effing. Ending. Better have a pair of tissues ready. Highly Recommendable.
*** Anne Frank: The Whole Story (2001) is a great adaptation, with adequate pacing and decent acting. A very memorable performance by Ben Kingsley as Otto Frank and Lili Taylor as Miep Gies. This two-episode miniseries goes beyond the scope of the original book and adds some very powerful and heart wrenching scenes of the days of Anne and Margot at the concentration camp. Maybe not the most accurate or faithful to the book, but very interesting nonetheless, and terribly heartbreaking.
*** The Diary of Anne Frank (2009). I know I watched this adaptation but for some reason I don’t remember anything specific about it. I rated it 7/10 on my IMDB account so I’m assuming it must be good. Not very memorable though, apparently. I guess after watching more than three thousand movies sometimes memory gaps start to appear and this is clearly one of them. I’m not looking forward to rewatch it, pick at own risk.

(¡Te estoy viendo a vos Cuarentena!).
Elegir a riesgo propio.

The rise and fall of Bruna Surfistinha, a brazilan call girl that rose to spectacular fame after publishing candid and explic An interesting choice.
The rise and fall of Bruna Surfistinha, a brazilan call girl that rose to spectacular fame after publishing candid and explicit details of her daily sex life with her clients on her blog. But fame without a plan is short lived, and it doesn’t take a lot for a celebrity to fall down from grace.
This was a short memoir I received in a book exchange with a work colleague. I gave her Jonathan Livingston Seagull and she lent me this one, more than a decade and half ago. I think this was my first ‘spice’ book.
It’s an honest, direct and raw depiction of the pros and cons of working as a middle class prostitute in downtown Brazil, without any sugarcoating whatsoever. Hardly at all a literary masterpiece, you can tell at first glance it was written by an amateur blogger rather than a professional author; yet truth be told I found it interesting enough nevertheless, and I appreciated its straightforwardness, and the novelty.
*** Confessions of a Brazilian Call Girl (2011) is an acceptable adaptation, fairly faithful to the original work, all things considering, and with some nice improvements too. Deborah Secco plays a convincing Bruna, and I appreciated the artistic indie vibe. Not a great film at all, but good enough to watch and complement the book.

An assembled collection of private letters by famed Truman Capote that he sent to his friends and colleges over the decades; all This was no Treat!
An assembled collection of private letters by famed Truman Capote that he sent to his friends and colleges over the decades; all brought together, creating a sort of personal diary that allows us to take a peek into the private life of the good man and appreciate the lauded author in a much more intimate way.
Are you a fan of Capote and enjoy his works? Good! Then this book may be just for you! Me on the other hand, I HATED it. Capote may be a superlative acclaimed author but dang the man can be insufferable as hell sometimes. Most of the letters is just gossip of who did this and who was that. I HATE gossip, and even more, BORING gossip. This is one of my most hated books ever, and I’d have never read this but it was a gift, and I’m stupid enough to read anything that is given to me.
On a personal note I must admit I lost a good friend soon after I trashed this book on FB, where I used to post reviews for my irl friends before knowing about GR; it wasn’t a close friend mind you but, still a friend. Oh well; live and learn.
I still want to read his so called masterpiece “In Cold Blood”; but it’s not currently on my priority list and I’ve already watched the film so, I’ll get there, someday. “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” too, that one soon.
