Yet fortune seems to smile them again when their last and fifth daughter is spared the disease and grows lively and healthy.
This was just PERFECT! Or almost! One of the best and shortest horror stories I’ve ever read in my life, deserving a special place among my best of short literature shelf. The horrifying ending scene one shocking image I haven’t been able to erase from my mind since the day I read it, already decades now.
I’m not a fan of Quiroga tbh, over time this author has given me enough duds to be wary of ever picking one of his books again; but this story, along with “El almohadón de plumas” , are two unforgettable short horror masterpieces I’ll always vouch and be grateful for; and can’t recommend them enough.

The infallible all-knowing detective, the faithful companion, the murder mystery, the near useless local police force, the clue gathering, and the inescapable ratiocination info dump at the end. Here’s where it all began. Every fictional detective that followed, just a better or worse modified copy.
Not a fav to be honest; remarkable as it may have been being the first, I ultimately think Dupin pales in comparison to Holmes, Poirot and Marple, to name a few. Dupin is just not that likable, and it just doesn’t measure up with the modernized versions we have today. Still, I find extremely INVALUABLE to know the original first, because it puts everything else into perspective.
It could be said Poe borne the detective, but Doyle made it humane, and Christie super cozy. Recommendable, for the inquisitive one.

El infalible detective sabelotodo, el fiel compañero, el misterio del asesinato, la casi totalmente inútil policial local, la recopilación de pistas, y la ineludible racionalización sobrecarga de información al final. Aquí es donde todo empezó. Todo detective ficcional que siguió, sólo una mejor o peor copia modificada.
No es un favorito para ser honesto; por notable que sea ser el primero de todos, en última instancia creo que Dupin palidece en comparación con Holmes, Poirot y Marple, por nombrar algunos. Dupin simplemente no es tan querible, y lamentablemente no está a la altura de las versiones modernizadas que tenemos hoy. Aún así, encuentro extremadamente INVALUABLE conocer el original y primero, porque pone todo lo demás en perspectiva.

Wow! And I mean WOW! This was excellent! This felt like a fantastic combination of the amazing quality of Hans Christian Andersen children’s stories mixed with the unbridled savagery of Charles Perrault’s fairy tales. A favorite and a place among my best of shorts shelf justly earned.
I read this as part of David G. Hartwell’s “The Dark Descent” best of short horror collection, which is by far one of the best short story collections I’ve ever read methinks. It also states in the introduction this story was a major factor in the inspiration of Neil Gaimans’s Coraline, which I really need to read asap.
I’m not surprised to see this story listed at the top of Lucy Lane Clifford’s page, because it IS THAT GOOD, what surprises me is that it doesn’t have way more ratings; because this tiny horror story of meager twenty pages that you can hardly call a book truly all deserves all the hype it can get. And if I didn’t give it 5 stars is because I think I’m way too judicious.
Well, that or I already forgot wth was that I didn’t like; because I’m writing this review like two weeks after I read it; which is more than enough time for me to forget stuff.

Una madre infinitamente amorosa y sus hermosas hijas viven felizmente sus dichosas vidas en un modesto y acogedor hogar; hasta que un día, los niños haciendo algunos mandados para su adorada madre se encuentran con una niña de aspecto extraño en la calle, con un secreto maravilloso y fascinante para compartir con ellos, pero hay una trampa. Para poder revelarlo, los niños deben portarse horrible y ser malos, ¡muy muy malos!
¡Wow! ¡Y quiero decir WOW! ¡Esto fue excelente! Esto se sintió como una fantástica combinación de la genial calidad de los cuentos infantiles de Hans Christian Andersen mezclada con el salvajismo sin filtro de los cuentos de hadas de Charles Perrault. Un favorito y un lugar en mi estante de los mejores cortos merecidamente ganado.
Leí esto como parte de la colección “El Descenso Oscuro” de David G. Hartwell de lo mejor del horror corto, que es por lejos creo una de las mejores colecciones de cuentos que he leído jamás. I love nature and hate humanity. Even more than I did before.
This may be, along with The Velveteen Rabbit, one of the best children’s book I’ve ever read, if not the best period; can’t decide which I love more. This was pure devastating PERFECTION, Wilde style. To achieve so much, in so few pages… simply MAJESTIC. 6 stars, easy.
Equally good for children AND adults. I actually think this is an adult’s book disguised as a children’s; because any child can enjoy it, truly, but ultimately, only a grown seasoned adult can understand its true meaning; and that’s exactly where lies its devastating beauty.
I think anything else said would be spoilerish, so trust me on this and just read it; you can thank me later. Not for nothing it’s considered in many lists as one of the best “Children’s” book ever written.

Amo la naturaleza y odio la humanidad. Incluso más que antes.
Esto es posiblemente, junto con El Conejo de Pana, uno de los mejores libros para niños que leí jamás, sino es que le mejor punto; no puedo decidir cuál amo más. Esto fue pura y devastadora PERFECCION, bien al estilo Wilde. Lograr tanto, en tan pocas páginas es simplemente… MAJESTUOSO. 6 estrellas, fácil.
Igualmente bueno para niños Y adultos. La verdad creo que este es un libro para adultos disfrazado como uno para niños; porque cualquier niño podría disfrutarlo, cierto, pero en última instancia, sólo un adulto curtido en la vida podría entender su verdadero significado; y es ahí donde radica su devastadora belleza.
Creo que decir cualquier cosa más dicha sería spoiler, así que confíen en mí y sólo léanlo; pueden agradecerme después. No por nada es considerado en muchas listas como uno de los mejores “libros para niños” jamás escritos.

This was a fine surprise and one outstanding collection! I would have never guessed the original fairy tales that birthed the genre and laid the foundation for so many afterwards were so short, and SO easy to read, especially considering its classicness! And of course this may have been aimed to children at the time; but still, more than enjoyable for any curious adult as well.
I’m sure all of us are familiar with many of the titles and themes listed below, either because of general knowledge or by watching one of the many adaptations and modern movies we have today. But getting to know in complete detail the very first and original versions, and considering it only takes 10 pages each at most, is, for me, genuinely amazing, and beyond priceless. Recommendable.
Go for the Best, consider the Good, whatever the Meh.

Locura de Hadas.
Una colección de cuentos cortos por Charles Perrault, padre fundador de los cuentos de hadas.
¡Esto fue una grata sorpresa y una sobresaliente colección! Nunca hubiera imaginado que los cuentos de hadas originales que dieron nacimiento al género y fundaron las bases para tantos después eran tan cortos, y TAN fáciles de leer, ¡especialmente considerando su clasicismo! Y por supuesto esto tal vez estaba dirigido a niños en su tiempo; pero aun así, más que disfrutable para cualquier adulto curioso también.
Estoy seguro que todos nosotros estamos familiarizados con muchos de los títulos y temas listados abajo, ya sea por cultura general o por haber visto una de las muchas adaptaciones y películas modernas que tenemos hoy. Pero conocer en completo detalle las primerísimas versiones originales, y considerando que tan sólo toma 10 páginas cuando mucho cada una, es, para mí, genuinamente espectacular, y más allá de invaluable. Recomendable.
Ir por lo Mejor, considerar lo Bueno, loquesea lo Meh.

Always bent over his microscope, perfecting it, and relentlessly researching every little thing; but to reach the maximum degree of magnification he needs a special kind of lens, an exorbitantly costly diamond lens he wouldn’t be able to afford not even in a million years. But when he finally obtains it, he discovers a whole new realm, an incredible tiny new world, with the most precious beautiful thing.
This was one weird but awesome story! So horrifically memorable, the kind that doesn’t strike you at the beginning, nor even after finishing it, but somehow stays with you nevertheless. It’s like it has some sort of delayed enjoyment, and the more and more I think about it, the more I find myself admiring it, or the general idea of it anyway. It’s the weirdest thing.
Widely considered the best by Fitz-James O'Brien, and for just reasons. And even though I haven’t read anything else by the man, I’m inclined to agree; because I see it quite hard to top this one. Not a fan of the style of writing tbh, but LOVED the idea, and looking forward to reading more of the author someday.

Linley es un científico locamente obsesionado con las investigaciones microscópicas. Siempre inclinado sobre su microscopio, perfeccionándolo, e investigando sin descanso cada pequeño detalle; pero para alcanzar el máximo grado de aumento necesita un tipo de lente especial, una exorbitante costosa lente de diamante que no podría comprar ni siquiera en un millón de años. Pero cuando finalmente la consigue, descubre una realidad completamente nueva, un mundo nuevo increíblemente pequeño, con la cosa más preciosa y hermosa.
Esta fue una historia extraña, ¡pero asombrosa! Tan horriblemente memorable, del tipo que no te llama la atención al principio, y ni siquiera después de terminarla, pero que por algún motivo permanece con vos de todos modos. Es como si tuviera una especie de disfrute con efecto retardado, y cuanto más y más pienso en ella, más me encuentro admirándola, o la idea general de ella al menos. Es de lo más extraño.
Ampliamente considerado lo mejor de Fitz-James O'Brien, y por justas razones. Y aunque no he leído nada más del hombre, me inclino a estar de acuerdo; porque lo veo bastante difícil superar esta. Para ser honestos no soy fanático del estilo de escritura, pero AME la idea, y espero leer más del autor algún día.
Recomendable, para sus escasas cuarenta y tanto páginas.

This was one of my first stories from Poe, and my personal favorite of them all. This little shortie has one of the most horrific endings I’ve ever read, and a chilling last image that for the life of me I don’t think I’ll ever be able to forget.
I don’t think this story is that good tbh, but I’ve had several problems with my teeth all my life so this is sort of my personal nightmare, so don’t mind my overvaluation too much.
Anyway. It’s short, it’s quick, it’s to lick your teeth. Have a try, if you like.

Para ser honestos no creo que esta historia sea tan buena, pero tuve problemas con mis dientes toda mi vida, así que esta es como mi especie de pesadilla personal, así que no le prestés demasiada atención a mi sobrevaloración.
Pero como sea. Es rápido, es corto, es para chuparse los dientes. Inténtalo, si quieres.

As a lover of all things animals, and especially of dogs and cats, I must say this little shortie hit a sensitive spot. So if you are one too, you might consider it a TW. Still, by all accounts, widely regarded as one of the finest stories Poe has ever written, and since it’s my personal second favorite of the man, I guess we agree on that one.
Recommendable; and for meager twenty something pages, just meow be worth checking it out.
Una pareja felizmente casada ama todos los animales y ha tenido muchas mascotas a lo largo de su matrimonio, la última siendo un hermoso gato negro, Pluto. Pero con el paso de los años el dueño se vuelve un poco volátil, y el gato tiene su temperamento propio.
Como amante de todo lo animal, y especialmente de perros y gatos, debo decir que este pequeño cuentito tocó una parte sensible. Así que, si vos también lo sos, tal vez deberías considerarlo como una advertencia. Aún así, a todas cuentas, ampliamente considerado como uno de los mejores cuentos cortos que Poe haya escrito jamás, y dado que es mi segundo favorito personal del hombre, supongo que estamos de acuerdo en eso.
Recomendable; y por escasas veintitantas páginas, puede que valga miaucho echarle un vistazo.
