Tooth and Claw

by Jo Walton

In as few words as possible, the best way to describe Jo Walton's Tooth and Claw (Orb Books, 2009) is to say that although it owes a great deal of its sensibility to the tropes of the Victorian novel, the main characters are all dragons.  This is not in any sense a mash-up (do not, for example, think Abraham Lincoln and vampires), rather it's a melding of two cultures—hu

“If you're 50 years old or younger, give every book about 50 pages before you decide to commit yourself to reading it, or give it up.

If you're over 50, which is when time gets shorter, subtract your age from 100 - the result is the number of pages you should read before deciding whether or not to quit. If you're 100 or over you get to judge the book by its cover, despite the dangers in doing so.”
Nancy Pearl

“I have for a long time felt that our society is becoming more and more fractured and divisive and that you could go a whole day without really talking to another person. If you give people a good book to talk about, you can build a community out of a diverse group. A common language grows out of it.”
Nancy Pearl

“I just said, 'Well, the real people performing miracles every day are librarians,' and we all laughed ourselves off our chairs.”

“People say that life is the thing, but I prefer reading.”
Logan Pearsall Smith

“I opened a book and in I strode.
Now nobody can find me.
I've left my chair, my house, my road,
My town and my world behind me.
I'm wearing the cloak, I've slipped on the ring,
I've swallowed the magic potion.
I've fought with a dragon, dined with a king
And dived in a bottomless ocean.
I opened a book and made some friends.
I shared their tears and laughter
And followed their road with its bumps and bends
To the happily ever after.
I finished my book and out I came.
The cloak can no longer hide me.
My chair and my house are just the same,
But I have a book inside me.”
Julia Donaldson

“Three things in human life are important: the first is to be kind; the second is to be kind; and the third is to be kind.”

Mike Scantlebury Well done, Nancy, Thanks for being my friend. I see you have impeccable taste. If ever we meet on the page, be sure and note my assured way with punctuation.

Nancy Elaine wrote: "Would you have any recommendations for a book by Native American essayists?"

There's a very old collection called I Tell You Now, but I don't think there's anything newer. But there's some great fiction by authors not as well known as Sherman Alexie (I'm assuming you've read his books), including Thomas King's Green Grass, Running Water and Perma Red by Debra Magpie Earling

Elaine Torrence Would you have any recommendations for a book by Native American essayists?
