Claire Legrand used to be a musician until she realized she couldn’t stop thinking about the stories in her head. Now she is a New York Times bestselling author of darkly magical books.

Her first novel is THE CAVENDISH HOME FOR BOYS AND GIRLS, one of the New York Public Library’s 100 Titles for Reading and Sharing in 2012. She is also the author of THE YEAR OF SHADOWS, a ghost story for middle grade readers; and WINTERSPELL, a young adult re-telling of The Nutcracker. SOME KIND OF HAPPINESS, her middle grade novel about mental illness, family secrets, and the power of storytelling, is a 2017 Edgar Award Nominee. Claire’s latest middle grade novel, FOXHEART, is a classic fantasy-adventure and a 2016 Junior Library Guild selection. The compani

Hi Natasha! Man, sorry it took so long to answer this! I'm so glad you love Winterspell! Wahoo!

Both MG and YA have their challenges, but I think MG probably comes easier to me. I just really connect with the mind and voice of MG characters in this way that resonates all the way through me from head to soul to toes.

I think CAVENDISH was probably the most flat-out enjoyable to write simply because I was writing it 100% for me. I wasn't published yet, I didn't have anything under contract. I didn't have to worry about expectations or marketing or anything like that. I just wrote for the sake of writing! And that was a lot of fun--not to mention very freeing! :)

Thanks for the questions! Happy reading!(less)

P.S. Middle grade books just might be my favorite. No lie.

Wendy Darling Claire! Thanks so much for the friendvite. I somehow missed the announcement for your second and third titles--congratulations! I love the sound of them. Looks like S&S Kids is going to get pretty sick of me pestering them for Claire Legrand titles. ;)

Glad to be in touch here--it's great to snoop the shelves of friends who actually read *gasp* middle grade fiction.
