With around three million day-trippers every year, Heidelberg can boast some of the most impressive visitor statistics in Germany, Europe and probably the world. In some ways this is a shame, because one day really isn't enough. Those who stay just a little longer will discover a host of attractions away from the beaten track and will have more time to soak up the unique atmosphere that sets Heidelberg apart from your average university city. The main attraction for all visitors is, of course, Heidelberg Castle, perched on the slopes of Mount Königstuhl some 70 metres above the Neckar.

Der Oderteich wurde zwischen 1715 und 1722 angelegt.
Gemeinsam mit dem Rehberger Graben versorgte er einst die Bergwerke der nahegelegenen Stadt St. Andreasberg mit Wasser, so dass auch bei Trockenheit immer genug Aufschlagwasser für den Betrieb der so genannten „Künste“ zur Verfügung stand. Heute gehört der Oderteich zum UNESCO Weltkulturerbe Oberharzer Wasserwirtschaft. Noch immer wird sein Wasser zur Stromerzeugung für St. Andreasberg genutzt.
Der berühmteste der Harzer Teichdämme weicht in seiner Konstruktion von den anderen recht einheitlich konstruierten Oberharzer Teichbauten ab.
Statt eines Stützkörpers aus Erdreich und Steinen verdichtet mit Rasenhaupt, besteht der Teichdamm des Oderteichs aus großen Granitsteinen und Granitsand. Gemäß der Harzer Bauweise wurde luft- und wasserseitig aus behauenen Granitquadern ein mächtiges, mörtelloses Zyklopenmauerwerk errichtet. Dazwischen wurde eine Kerndichtung aus festgestampften Granitsand eingebracht. Dieser hat einen hohen Anteil an Kaolinit, einem Tonmineral, das bei der Verwitterung von Feldspat entsteht und Sandkörner bindet. Insbesondere mechanisch festgestampft, entsteht so eine wasserundurchlässige Dichtungsmasse.
Der 166 m lange, 19 m hohe Damm bewährt sich bis heute.

Der Zoo Wuppertal wurde 1881 von der Aktiengesellschaft "Zoologischer Garten" in der damaligen Stadt Elberfeld eröffnet und bot 34 Tiere zur Beobachtung, darunter einen Bären und ein Wolfspaar. Der seit 1937 von der Stadt Wuppertal getragene Zoo umfasst heute 24 Hektar und hält etwa 5000 Tiere. Er ist landschaftlich einer der schönsten in ganz Deutschland und besticht durch weitläufige Wiesenflächen, hohe Hanglagen und flache Talmulden.
The Wuppertal Zoo was opened in 1881 by the "Zoologischer Garten" public limited company in what was then the city of Elberfeld and offered 34 animals to watch, including a bear and a pair of wolves. The zoo, which has been run by the city of Wuppertal since 1937, now covers 24 hectares and has around 5,000 animals. In terms of landscape, it is one of the most beautiful in Germany and impresses with extensive meadow areas, high slopes and flat valley hollows.

The town was founded during the 12th century in several stages: bishop Gebhard von Würzburg consecrated the recently built Michael's church and installed the Michaelis market in 1156. Since the second half of the 12th century, the Heller coins were minted in Hall that were rather inferior yet replaced the better money, becoming a very widespread currency.
A document of 1204 mentions Hall for the first time as a town; since 1280, the immediacy of supremacy remained uncontested that in the years before had been wrestled from the neighbouring Schenk von Limpurg clan. Emperor Ludwig the Bavarian had to intervene into the internal affairs of the town in 1340, and he had to reform the structure of the council, the authoritative committee of the town's politics.
From 1340 to 1512 it would consist now of twelve aristocrats, six middle-class citizens and eight craftsmen. As a result of the Great Discord from 1510 to 1512, the nobility of the town lost its supremacy. Subsequently, the council was dominated by a group of rather bourgeois, increasingly academically educated families that developed into a new upper class.
