Motorola changed its strategy a few years ago, by the time it was bought by Lenovo, they would focus on producing fewer phones, one for each segment. First, they released the Moto X as the only phone, which offered an unprecedented amount of customizations of the hardware from their newly released tool called Moto Maker. Then they surprised everyone by launching a phone with decent specs at a very low price for the time called Moto G and later they even introduced a more affordable phone with superior specs than those offered by the competition at that price point. Both of those phones offered customizations by changing a few elements of the hardware, but not to the extent of those of the Moto X. About a year later, we got successors for the Moto X and Moto G and a month later another phone was announced.
That phone had ever higher specs than the Moto X, which is supposed to be the flagship device but it had almost no customizations in its hardware and it was not as widely released. It’s called Droid Turbo and it features a 5.2-inch AMOLED Quad HD display and a battery with the huge capacity of 3900 mAh. It has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 processor and 3 GB of RAM. It offers 32 GB or 64 GB of storage and unfortunately it doesn’t feature a card slot to expand it. The main camera has a 21-megapixel sensor and it can capture 4K video, while the front-facing one has a 2-megapixel resolution. The design is not meant to appeal to everyone and materials like Ballistic Nylon or Metalized Glass Fiber plus the water-repellent coating make it seem like a rugged device.
Now, a report suggests that a new update for the Droid Turbo is on its way, as more users are getting emails inviting them to “participate in an early preview of a new software release”. The phone is currently running Android 4.4, and a very light skin from Motorola at that, so we can only hope (although it is not specified) that the mentioned update is some version of Android Lollipop as some other Motorola devices, even the low-end ones have been updated to this version of the OS. If the soak test is successful, then Motorola will release the update for more devices, so let’s hope this is indeed Android 5.X as the company has promised to update this handset.
