Typical HP Printer
I bought this printer because my old HP printer was no longer working. Like typical HP systems, you need the HP smart app to connect to the printer. Often times, the printer would not process the print because there is a disconnect somewhere. I have tried the trouble shooting steps and eventually I would get to print the 4-5 pages that I needed. The printer is pretty decent and I would recommend to others.

This printer was a good purchase overall, it was easily setup via hardwired, I didn't try Wi-Fi since most were saying it was crap, but also my switch is 5 ft. away so a wire was nothing to run. It prints from our Tablets, smartphones and computers with ease and with the alleged 5000 sheets of printing out of the box I most likely will not need to replace it for many years. Even when I do the replacements are only 30 bucks for another 5k pages. NOTE: The quality it not the best black and white, sometimes it is black, sometimes it seems like gray-scaled, even when printing the same file.

This printer is simply awful. I bought it twice – once when I was living in Europe, but luckily, I didn’t have to use it then, although the low ink cost caught my eye. When I moved to the USA, I didn’t bother bringing it along and bought a new one, the same model (updated version), here. Yes, the ink is indeed cheap, and it comes pre-filled with a large supply, but its performance is abysmal. Setting it up feels like an endless dance, as it often fails at the final step and requires restarting from scratch. After just a month of use, more problems arose – after printing a single page, all the buttons start flashing. I’ve tried troubleshooting as per HP’s website, but it only temporarily fixes the issue for one print job before it reoccurs. Now, I’m stuck at my laptop, sending print jobs while my wife constantly restarts the printer. It’s clear why it’s priced so low. While a new cartridge may be cheap and the cost per page low, once the ink runs out, I’ll be investing in a different brand, not HP

This is kind of a weird printer to review.

You can get a much better printer for the price. You can get a cheaper printer that is almost exactly the same. But those printers require you to buy massively marked up toner cartridges and they have chips to confirm that they are not refilled or third party.

This printer doesn't have a toner cartridge. You get a bottle of toner, and there is a hopper. You put the toner into the hopper. It comes with about 5000 pages worth of toner in the box. While the toner comes in a fancy bottle, there isn't a check to make sure that it is a fresh authentic bottle from the printer manufacturer. The toner is a lot cheaper than most toner cartridges.

And that is why you are paying a premium for the printer - you are buying it upfront, not using it as a "printer as a service" or the handle/blade model (where they sell you the printer cheap, and sell you the ink expensive).

The printer itself is fairly well made. It's not flimsy. The paper tray is a bit finnicky. It's a solid bit of at-home kit, it certainly isn't a workgroup printer by any means. For a mono laser, it is slow. The duplexing slows it down even more. The print quality is good.

All in all, I'm happy with it. It seems to work fine for my uses. I wish that it had a better paper tray, but...

I gave up on printers years ago. Whatever I bought would just stop working, inexplicably. Ink cost tons. The printer took up tons of room. Jams. Wifi problems. And then ultimately the printer would just become unresponsive and refuse to print.

Finally, I got to a point where I wanted to be able to print labels to ship things without going to the post office. I read tons of printer guides and realized that I'd been buying inkjet printers, which will stop working if you don't use them frequently. Their liquid ink system dries up and the whole printer is dead (I swear, there were also wifi issues tho. . . ).
Anyway, laser printers have a much higher cost up front, but it eventually pays off. First, you don't need to use them with any frequency. They are happy to sit around unused for ages. Second, the ink cartridges last a very very long time. Inkjet cartridges need to replaced CONSTANTLY, even if you buy the ones that are supposed to last a long time. It's not true, comparatively. Laser printer's toner last much, much longer.
I had a lot of trouble setting up the wifi at first, and tech support had to troubleshoot a few things. Can't remember what the issue was (this was many months ago), but it worked out after an hour or so of setup time, and hasn't been an issue at all since. Very reliable.

One more note: if you don't need a color printer, then go for a black and white one! This is so much simpler and less expensive in terms of ink/toner. I'm relieved not to have a color printer.

As for the cost . . . I bought this one because it was the cheapest model at the time that fit my needs and would arrive by next day. It's not cheap, but it's been working perfectly without any glitches so I'm thankful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great monochrome printer!

This is a really great monochrome printer. It comes with a full 5000 pg ink cartridge, not a starter cartridge. The instructions were clear and was easy to set up with WIFI. I would purchase this item again.
Unfortunately the carrier selected by the seller was very poor, they had refused to deliver the printer to my address which was extremely disappointing. They had mentioned that it was a non-service area. I had to travel 100 kilometers return to pick this item up. The carriers for the other Amazon orders had no problem delivering to my house. Kudos to them. Aside from the non-delivery by the carrier, Amazon was amazing. Thank-you.

If you want spend 6 hours on the phone talking to tech support and tech supervisors then buy this. It only worked for a few hours. I have 2 other HP products (laptop and inkjet tank printer) I love them both but regrettably had to purchase a Brother printer and it works like a dream

Super happy with this printer so far. Was a little apprehensive to purchase at first bc of the negative reviews at the top, but glad I did. Needed it for my home office to print documents. Set up was easy & fast, absolutely no issues. Compact printer and has a nice clean look.

Obviously, if you are looking for some crazy quality, this isn’t the printer for you. Comparing to the Sharpe printer at the office, I can definitely tell the prints are somewhat more pixelated if looking really closely. But it does the job perfectly for what I need and the toner capacity + refill cost are a huge plus.

Only thing is I was expecting there to be a toner refill in the package & there doesn’t look like there is one. The product description says 5k pages out of the box, and one toner is only 2.5k so not sure how there are 5k pages. Perhaps it takes 2 toners to fill to full capacity — 5k — and I am misunderstanding?

Updated after just over 2,500 pages printed.
Overall good performance. Quality of prints is good. The projected toner yield seems to be on track, which makes it very inexpensive to print. I do wish there were more printer options, such as print density, but it is OK. The only issue so far is that jobs stall or hang in the print queue frequently regardless of what application one is printing from (in Windows 11).
Read the fine print - - I didn't. This printer has a imaging unit (drum) that is NOT end user replaceable (it took me literally 2 full hours to verify this on a HP chat session after the agent at first thought it was possible for end users to replace the imaging drum). The imaging drum is rated for 50,000 pages. In the end, after paying for an authorized technician and the imaging unit, the printer might end up being disposable at 50,000 pages. Do your own math. I am disappointed with that. I realize it may be a marketing strategy, but one I do not appreciate. So, accordingly, my rating is adjusted downward even though I find it does a good job.

The setup with HP's app on a desktop was straightforward, except it did not show a USB option and searched the computer to be installed as a wireless (which I do not want). Connected the USB cable. Checked Control Panel and it was there, ready to go. The guide could be more clear on that point.

First take on printing is good quality and speed. With the savings on toner with this tank printer, I am looking forward to it being a very good fit for what I need.

As for comments about the cover over the paper tray, this design goes back as far as the original HP Desk Jet which came out in 1988, or so.
