Some features require linking your Amazon account, and downloading the Alexa application or using a compatible Alexa device. Internet connection speeds and availability depend on your internet service provider; if your internet service provider does not provide you with the maximum supported speed, you will not experience that maximum speed. Maximum network speeds, if applicable, reflect combined supported speeds across wired and wireless clients. Maximum wireless signal rates are derived from IEEE 802.11 standard. Specifications assume wired Ethernet connection; your experienced speed may vary when connected to an eero device that is configured as a wireless extender. Coverage estimates are based on normal use conditions. Actual range and performance can vary, and maximum supported speeds may not be available to all customers, due to factors such as local regulations (including power limits), network configuration, interference, connected devices, device usage, building materials, and obstructions. Specifications are based on use of a Wi-Fi 6 or later generation client device that supports 160 MHz. For more information about eero performance, visit support.eero.com. Combining eero 6+ devices with older generation eero devices on the same network may result in reduced performance across the network.

It’s a pass for me

It’s a pass for me
I had high hopes for the eero 6+ - It has 1Gb backhaul ports, 160MHz 802.11ax channels, three base stations, not a ridiculous price when on sale at $190 and integration with other Amazon products I have. Here is a summary of my network:Ubiquiti 10Gb XG-16, 16 mixed 10Gbps port Switch as the backbone, Truenas Core 13, Windows 2012r2, 2 10Gbps QNAPs, a 1Gbps Synology, VMware ESXi 7.u3g on an intel X520 10Gb dual-port NIC. All 10Gbps links are SFP fiber, 2.5Gbps devices at SPF to 2.5Gbase-T. Trendnet RB-TEW-827DRUA 2.0 is the incumbent wifi supplemented by a TP-Link AC1200 in bridge mode on wired 1Gbps ethernet. A Netgear RAX35 is also under test. Each Netgear firmware gets better but it’s not ready for prime-time – no pun intended. The wifi on the Xfinity cable modem has been disabled and it’s in bridge mode. There is MOCA to the bedrooms and my Dell XPS-15 has an Intel AX200 and UGRENN 2.5Gb USB-C NICs.The good:It was just OK with regard to ease of setup. The first node (the gateway) went up easily. Carrier rate is 2402MHz. I saw 850Mbps from my 1.2Gb provisioned internet link from my iPhone 12 Pro MAX. My laptop with an Intel AX160 Wifi card showed the same. Both are faster that the ~700Mbps from the Trendnet router I had in place. Wired using a Realtek 2.5Gbps USB-C adapter showed 950Mbps about the same as the previous router (960Mbps)The badThe second node went in easily but the throughput was only 430Mb on my cell phone, wifi laptop and worryingly my laptop with a Realtek 2.5Gb USB jumping through my 1Gbps MOCA. It looks like there can be only one wifi network and an internet isolated guest network. The wireless bands unique SSIDs can’t be split out – I let my IOT devices slug it out on 2.5GHz and my few high-speed devices run on the 5GHz. So, this was a problem for me. The individual bands also cannot have unique SSIDs but that’s not a deal-breaker. My current router can do that for 4+1 SSIDs but I didn’t expect that much flexibility. The third access point showed out of range during setup, though I had its backhaul directly connected to the backbone switch. The Trendnet is typically visible at that distance. I moved it closes to the gateway and the installation proceeded as normal. That one showed 350Mbps throughput. I upgraded all units to 6.12.2-68 and confirmed client steering is turned on. Dragging files across the network under ATTO and Chrystal Disk Mark showed terrible numbers – very asymetrical. Typically 60MBps peak is what I see in both directionsThere is some talk about 2.5Gb ethernet in the app but no promises. My cable modem has a 2.5Gb interface but the app shows 1Gb. I plugged the third node into a 2.5G port. It’s 1Gb, too. I also can’t control the nodes IP addresses directly though I was able to move them from 192.168.4.x to 192.168.0.x. I like to reserve the bottom 10 IPs for network devices but bunch of devices in my home beat them to it. There’s no control over channels, security type, bandwidth, prioritization. I saw port triggering but didn’t test it.For most people, this solution should be fine. It’s not bad. I mean, it works to extend a network easily but it’s not fast on the remote nodes. In the end – low throughput and 1+1 SSIDs was enough to put me off. My previous config was MUCH faster on AC at about half the price. I’ve installed some of the expensive ASUS AX routers for some people. They work as expected. I’ll keep slugging it out with the RAX35 Netgear. If/when they get the firmware right, I’ll install three of them. Ideally, I would like this solution with 2.5Gb ethernet ports and a 2.402 carrier. That would be a highly compatible wifi network that should beak the Gigabit barrier.

I am extremely happy with my eero 6+ mesh Wi-Fi system. For reference I have a total of 9 throughout my home. Network Room, 5 Bedrooms, Garage, Patio and Office (All are hardwired in via a 24 Port Switch throughout the 6000 sqft house.) Running 1Gig via Spectrum.

Pros:

Excellent Coverage: Eero 6+ mesh technology provides strong Wi-Fi coverage throughout my home and exterior. I am on a 2 acre property and have 0 dead zones and ensuring a reliable connection in every corner.

Fast Speeds: Supporting Wi-Fi 6 it offers faster speeds and better performance, especially in crowded networks with multiple devices.

Ease of Setup: Setting up the Eero 6+ is typically straightforward plug, play and run the software update.

Reliability: The Eero 6+ Mesh system is known for their reliability, as they dynamically optimize network performance by routing traffic through the best path, ensuring stable connectivity.

Smart Home Integration: It can integrate with various smart home devices and systems, allowing you to manage your home network and connected devices conveniently from one place.

Security Features: Eero offers built-in security features such as automatic updates, ad blocking, and advanced threat detection, enhancing the overall security of your network.

Cons:

Cost: The initial cost of purchasing an Eero 6+ system can be higher compared to traditional single-router setups or older mesh systems, especially if you have a large home that requires multiple nodes.

Subscription for Advanced Features: Some advanced features, such as Eero Secure (which provides additional security and parental controls), require a subscription fee, adding to the ongoing cost of ownership.

Limited Ethernet Ports: Each 6+ Eero node typically has 2 Ethernet ports, which may not be sufficient for users who need to connect multiple wired devices directly to the network. I corrected this by hardwiring from my ethernet drops and then connecting it to a small 5 port switch for anything in the individual rooms that may need to be hardwired

Dependence on Internet Connectivity: Mesh systems like Eero 6+ rely heavily on internet connectivity. If your internet service goes down, your entire network could be affected, even for local communication between devices. I combat this by having power ran on my solar system, but if Spectrum is down, so is everything else.

Privacy Concerns: Being a cloud-managed system, there may be concerns about data privacy and security, although Eero has implemented measures to address these concerns.

Limited Advanced Configuration Options: While Eero is praised for its simplicity, it may not offer as many advanced customization options for users who prefer to fine-tune their network settings extensively.

This is a revelation. Laugh at me, but I had two NETGEAR WNAP310 (sophisticated but dated Wireless N business-class PoE APs) for a two story 2500sf 1920s era home. I ran them off of a GS108TP Gb PoE switch with one in the center of the 2nd story and one in a backyard office building, about 100ft apart. The APs were connected to Cat5e back to the switch. Comcast gives me 100Mbps cable service (fluctuates) and both the modem and the Unifi EdgeRouter were rated for Gigabit. Devices included 2 PCs, 4 Apple phones/tablets, 2 Geeni smart outlets, 2 Nest cameras and 2 smoke alarms, and Amazon Echo family devices.

Performance was fine near the APs, but mobile devices did not transfer across APs well, the performance in the backyard/outbuildings suffered because the devices were constantly confused about which AP to use, and there were dead spots in the corners of the house. In essence, I was overprovisioned from the ISP and gated at the edge due to the Wireless N technolgoy with no smarts about 2.4 or 5Ghz, delivering mostly 10Mbs performance more than 50 ft away from the APs.

After increasingly strident feedback from my internal customers began exploring options. Standardizing on Unifi gear meant more cost and network management (and evenings tinkering) than I want any more. The eero products looked good, brought mesh tech, worked with Alexa and smart home devices.

Immense performance difference with just 2 eeros (one replacing the router and the outbuilding AP and one replacing the upstairs AP). 100Mbps speeds from everywhere. Simple UI in the app; not as customizable (no router CLI) but does enough - like custom DNS - with everything I wanted.

Lessons learned:
1. Using the wired network for backhaul was a good idea. Get the traffic off of the wireless by using the eero routers if you can plug them in.
2. Use the Beacons if you need to reach farther and have a power outlet but DON'T have an RJ45 port.
3. The coverage is a lot better than I expected (YMMV). My house is on a 6500sf lot (65x100) and with two eero routers roughly inline with the long axis, I have coverage for 80%. Another in the last third of the lot would be ideal but I don't need to cover the street and the sidewalk.
4. I expect eero 6 (500Mbps) would probably produce the same results, but the 6+ (900Mbps) means I'm ready for Gigabit ISP package.

For me, it means a MUCH faster LAN, lots less tinkering, and less hardware required than I planned.

I bought a 3-pack of 6+ routers to use the Cat5e as backhaul. This was a good idea

The Performance, connectivity and easy set up are great. I bought this Router to replace my ASUS router that stopped working after 6 months. The Value and overall quality and performance beat my old router. I have better speeds and reliability to all my devices, I was pleasantly surprised and I plan on getting a couple more extenders for my set up. Plus the size and appearance are nice and sleek.
