Nice monitor but QC concerns and not good for consoles
I was using a larger Samsung G8 monitor when I was offered this G7 for review. I initally thought the biggest differences between the two would be screen size, different chassis style/color, and bumping down to a 120Hz refresh rate from 240, and the G7 ships with a remote whereas the G8 does not. None of these I considered a big deal because I planned to use the G7 with an Xbox series X and use the G8 with my gaming PC. The Xbox max refresh is 120Hz, so it works out. Assembly of the G7 is simple and is designed to be completed with the monitor still inside the box.Performance is where the G7 is somewhat disappointing overall, at least for console use. Actual gameplay performance on console is good although much like the G8, the HDR seems washed out and leaves a lot to be desired. The monitor had no issues keeping up with the comparatively modest demands of the console. Gaming video was tack sharp, smooth, and flicker free. Lighting effects were excellent and rendered beautifully. The G7 functions much like a smart TV home entertainment hub, whereas the G8 feels more like a dedicated gaming monitor. I had to agree to Samsung’s privacy and streaming policies before using the wifi enabled G7. Once connected, the G7 can stream live video and other content. The home screen can be customized with widgets for quick access to common streaming services. The G7 has a gaming mode but it has a lot of flicker and seemingly indecisiveness while trying to engage. It wouldn’t be too bad if it only happened at the beginning and end of gaming sessions but it also occurs on certain in-game pause and static menus and whenever I invoke the Xbox overlay to record or watch replays. It gets highly annoying at times. Another reason the G7 isn’t optimal for consoles is because whenever any display settings get hosed, like for example when the HDR somehow got disabled, it’s more difficult to troubleshoot and resolve than on PC. Lastly, the XBox app is among the numerous apps pre installed on the G7. Clicking the Xbox app panel instead of the Xbox Series X panel opens the same Xbox app that I have on my smart devices. It’s useful for cloud gaming but does not really support console gaming and isn’t really necessary on a console. The G7 is much more suitable for a PC than a console. It’s a good option for dorms or smaller rooms where it can pull double duty as a streaming smart TV in addition to PC and gaming monitor duties. One other concern I have though is quality. The first G7 I ordered developed a persistent thin green vertical line near the center of the screen within the first hour of use. I included a pic of the line. The replacement has been good so far but I do worry about quality overall compared to the G8. If on the fence deciding between the G7 and G8, the G8 is the better choice despite being more expensive.

This monitor does 4K resolution at 144hz. My current pc has an i7 11700K and an RTX 3080TI. I obviously cannot do 4k max settings at that frame rate, but I do like the fact that this monitor has G-Sync and Free-Sync meaning I'm future proofed in case I switch to AMD in the future. It does have smart features, but I do not use them because I have my desktop hooked up to it. It has rgb lighting in the front and back that is customizable and can react to which game you are playing. The remote is USB-C rechargeable and works on other newer Samsung monitors and TVs. It comes with a stand and a plate that has the standard VESA mount support in case you have a monitor mount. The speakers are okay, but I still prefer to use my headset or sound system. It's nice to have them though. The ultrawide is interesting because you can force 21:9 aspect ratio at the cost of a lower resolution. The IPS screen is nice as well. I have tested Red Dead Redemption 2 and Cyberpunk 2077 and this monitor looks amazing with them on 4k max settings. I get about 55-70 fps with no screen tearing. Which is nice. All around I'd say this monitor is worth getting if you have a rig that can utilize it or are thinking about upgrading. However, even 4090s are still said to struggle with 4K max settings at 144hz right now.

    TLDR;

o Great picture... when it worked.
o 60% of the time the monitor would wake up from the video signal, tell me it couldn't find a video signal, then power off after 60 seconds
o 100% of the time I could not get a picture outside of "Game Mode", limiting its usefulness outside of games since you lose access to many options in "Game Mode."
o The monitor's menu interface is horrific. It feels like I paid money to get tortured. Not my kink, sorry!
o Comes with a useless remote control that feels cheap poorly designed. Why does the button to access the menu change depending on what mode you're in!?
o Poorly designed streaming user interface slapped onto an already bad monitor configuration menu.
o Samsung's support site is just as frustrating as the monitor UI. It doesn't recognize the official model number as a valid product.
o Cost me nearly $100 in new HDMI cables trying to troubleshoot...

Avoid this monitor. Probably best to avoid all Samsung monitors to be safe...

Samsung has produced a beautiful looking monitor that is severely hampered by its user interface, support experience, and various other bugs.. When I could get it to work, it looked amazing! Sadly, I could never get it to work consistently. Wiggling my mouse would wake the monitor, but it would often present me with a screen claiming there was no signal, and a 60 second count down before powering off. Clearly it detected an HDMI signal, since it woke up, but then it would fail to lock on to that signal.

I replaced the HDMI cable three times with various "ultra speed" 8K HDMI 2.1 certified cables, but the effect was the same. I tried with multiple computers and they all experienced the same issue. Frustratingly, I could never reproduce the issue consistently. It was just a roll of the dice as to whether it would work this time or not. I could wiggle the mouse after the screen had been off for a minute or a day and there was a 60% chance the monitor would come on, then tell me there was no signal. (THEN HOW DID YOU KNOW TO TURN ON!?)

In addition to multiple HDMI cables, I attempted a firmware update. This was also an exercise in frustration, if you haven't allowed the monitor to access your WiFi. If you go to Samsung's website, find the support section where it makes you type in the model number, then type in the model number exactly as it appears in the monitor's support menu, the site claims that no such monitor exists. REALLY SAMSUMG!? Are you really that incompetent? Oh wait, you made this crap-fest of a monitor, so clearly the answer is yes. I managed to find the monitor support page via bing, after wading through a ton of useless pages. That allowed me to update the monitor with a USB drive. Sadly, that had no effect on my HDMI sync issues.

I seem to get burned every time I buy a Samsung product. I took a risk and bought this monitor, and yup, got burned again.

    Report
Reviewed in the United States on April 6, 2022
    Size: 28-inchStyle: G70ASet: MonitorVerified Purchase
As a 10-year old DVI secondary monitor decided that it was time to go, I did my research to buy this screen. After checking many professional reviews and user reviews on different sites, I did decide to buy the Odyssee G7.

I had seen the negative reviews - where people described their issues in technical detail - but also heard all the positive feedback.

First of all, my decision for this screen was: I use it for work and gaming. I use it for photography post-production and UI design for work, and after work, I use it as my main gaming monitor.

    The good:
I already used another 4K UHD screen as my main monitor. So I was used to the quality of the screen resolution. Still, this screen impressed me right out of the box with its picture quality and color intensity. The colors are vibrant, the screen is razor-sharp and the blacks are really dark, and light areas really clear - even on lower brightness levels.
And that is just using it while working. It really shines when you start up a game.

    The bad:
This screen requires fine-tuning to get it how you want it. Even though it looks amazing right out of the box, you will notice that the default settings will not suffice, and you will want to dive into what kind of ICC profiles you would like to use. If you want to use a simple plug-and-play monitor without tweaking, this might not be your monitor.
And let's be honest... this is an expensive screen. I love it. I had the money to spend... but if you don't need G-SYNC, there might be better alternatives.

Issues described in other critical reviews:

    - The stand is unstable:
I did not experience this. When correctly assembled the stand I received with the monitor is absolutely sturdy and easy to adjust.

    - Vertical Light bands on dark/black screens:
Absolutely! I saw this in some of the reviews, and yes, I have seen this as well. This happens when the screen turns off the LEDs for areas the screen is not using. It is annoying - but you can turn this off. Once done, it still shows the deep dark of black pixels, but without those bands showing.

    - G-SYNC issues:
I did not experience this. As I have read in other reviews, this might have been related to the latest firmware of the screen or the latest graphics card drivers. Having them both updated worked perfectly fine. However, I am using this on an RTX 3080-Ti card, so I cannot speak for other GPUs.
I also have the G-SYNC turned on for both windowed and full-screen without any issues.

    A final note:
The LED/Core Lighting. It is fun to have, and it has an impact when playing games in a dark room. However, it did not really change the color, only the intensity of the LED brightness based on what is going on on-screen. Don't let the Core lighting be your deciding factor for this screen.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great top of the line gaming monitor

Got it on sale for 799.99 CAD. Colours are fantastic, 144hz 4K HDMI 2.1 is great for next gen consoles like my PS5. The only flaw I see is the failure for the monitor to recognize a new input and switch between HDMI 1 and 2 accordingly. However if left in standby it will power on by itself when the console turns on. Overall, this monitor is great, leave HDR off as HDR 400 is “fake” HDR and hurts visuals. Shouldn’t even be allowed honestly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Monitor con características impresionantes, al precio adecuado.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning visuals and colors HDR actually works

I bought this product open box due to cheaper cost however it came with no screws in the box. Amazon helped me find the screw at my nearest store and refunded me 10% of the purchase price so it wasn’t a huge issue for me .

This monitor works great the colors are amazing and I’m running this with a 3080ti so 4K visuals are great and have no screen tearing. The hdr dynamic mode is actually bright enough to be hdr and works well with the windows auto hdr mode when gaming. I used to own a 5120x1440 49” Samsung Odyssey before this monitor and I didn’t think the hdr on that monitor was as good as this 4k monitor despite being rated as “HDR 1000”.
