Perfect for December lights!
5 out of 5 stars
Perfect for December lights!
I wanted to be able to plug in both my Yule tree, and the lights in the window, and the regular floor lamp we keep in the corner. The Kasa power strip was perfect for that, and with being able to either control it through the app, or my smart speaker I've got the tree and the window on timers, and the floor lamp on voice control. It's great!I did have a hard time connecting at first, but that's because I use Duck Duck Go which installs a VPN on your phone - you've got to turn that off for the first connection. Other than that I was able to connect despite being on a different floor as my router. Great signal strength!

I honestly love this extension cord because it works through Wi-Fi and I can control my devices even if I am not in the house. There is a timer I can set it up. It works with Alexa. The insulation was pretty simple. The size and the shape are good and it actually looks nice. The cord is not very long but for what I needed works pretty good. It’s easy to use easy install and it’s worth it of the money.

I am using this to control a table lamp and floor lamp in our living room, where the switches on the lamps were a bit hard to reach. Connecting to Wi-Fi was easy using the Kasa app. Was also easy to link to Amazon Alexa. Now we can easily turn the lights on or off via voice or smartphone. Looking forward to setting automatic timers when we are on vacation.

This strip was fairly simple to connect to my Wi-Fi although it did take two attempts. Full disclosure, I have it in my garage a little ways from the router. I'm using this with two grow lights that need to be on a schedule. I quickly installed the app, and then started discovery and setup for the strip. The whole process was less than 10 minutes and I was able to name both lights and then enter a schedule. So far this is working great and I'm also able to plug my phone in via USB when I'm working with my plants. A nice feature - having both USB and standard plug options.

This smart power strip continues to do what it's advertised to do ... 99.9% of the time. That 0.1% is the problem, but I'll get to that.

It worked out of the box using the instructions provided. I downloaded the Kasa Smart app onto my phone, and after setup I was able to name and control the power strip's three outlets (I got the version with three outlets) independently, or combine two or all of them together into a group and control them at the same time. I can also control them with Google Home. It's advertised as also being compatible with Alexa, but I don't have anything with Alexa, so I can't test that firsthand.

Each outlet also has a toggle button that allows the user to switch that outlet on or off manually, and each button has an LED that shows whether the outlet is currently supplying power to whatever's plugged into it. This is a bigger deal than one might think at first. Imagine a desk lamp with a chain that can be pulled to turn it on or off, but you can't tell by just looking at it whether that pull-chain switch is on or off. Now imagine that you plug it into this power strip and it doesn't light up. Where's the problem – is the light bulb burned out? Is the lamp turned off? Is the power strip's outlet off? Well, I can eliminate the third question by just looking at this power strip and making sure that the outlet is on, so one pull of the lamp's chain will tell me whether the light bulb is burned out or not.

The thing is, occasionally the power strip will just suddenly stop responding to the network. I don't know what causes this, but it will suddenly and silently disconnect; its power light and connection light will say that it's powered and connected to wi-fi, but the app says it can't contact the device. I can still manually toggle the outlets on and off with the buttons, but I can't control it with the app, or Google Home, etc. I can unplug the device and plug it back in, resetting it, and things work again. But I never know when it's going to glitch again, and that unreliability is what gives this device four stars instead of five for me. It doesn't happen every day – it's been weeks since the last time it happened, in fact – but not knowing what caused it or when it's going to happen again adds just enough uncertainty that I can't quite trust it. I'm not going to plug anything into it that might be disastrous if it couldn't be controlled.

Very well designed other than that shadow of unreliability.

This works well with Alexa - initially I had some issues getting it to work reliably when I re-used the name I had given to a WeMo outlet used for the same lamp. I gave this outlet a new name that had never been used on my network and it has performed flawlessly since then.

As a hardware hacker with a penchant for home automation, Kasa's KP303 piqued my curiosity. Three individually controllable smart outlets, 2.4GHz Wi-Fi connectivity, and ETL-certified surge protection – all in a compact, user-friendly package? Sign me up.

Initial setup was a breeze, the Kasa app guiding me through a painless Wi-Fi handshake. Connectivity remains rock-solid, even on the fringes of my router's reach, thanks to its sensitive 5dBi antennas. Individual outlet control is a boon, letting me power-cycle finicky devices or automate elaborate "movie night" routines through the app's intuitive timer and scheduling features.

Speaking of the app, it's a geek's playground. Granular power monitoring lets me track individual outlet consumption, which is a boon for optimizing energy use. The local API access, a hidden gem, opens doors for custom Raspberry Pi integrations and voice control beyond Alexa and Google Assistant.

However, no tech gem is flawless. The lack of 5GHz Wi-Fi support might irk bandwidth-hungry users, and the app's versatile automation options could benefit from more advanced logic like geofencing or IFTTT compatibility.

The Kasa KP303 is a potent blend of user-friendly convenience and techie delight. Its robust connectivity, individual outlet control, and hidden API access make it a steal for the price. While it won't replace my Frankenstein's monster of custom Pi-powered relays, it's earned a permanent spot on my workbench – and a solid recommendation for tech-savvy tinkerers seeking a smart power upgrade.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Game-Changer for My Creative Studio: Kasa Smart Plug Power Strip by TP-Link (KP303)
Reviewed in Canada on February 19, 2024
As the owner of a bustling jewelry design and production studio, where we juggle everything from 3D design to wax carving, lost wax casting, sand casting, smelting, forging, laser engraving, sublimation, and not to mention our vlogging and streaming activities, managing power efficiently and safely is crucial. That's where the Kasa Smart Plug Power Strip by TP-Link (KP303) has been a game-changer for us.

From the get-go, the KP303 impressed me with its seamless integration into our workflow. The ability to control three outlets and two USB ports via a single app means I can power up my 3D printers, casting equipment, and laser engravers remotely, ensuring that everything is preheated and ready to go the moment I step into the studio. This level of convenience and control has not only streamlined our processes but also significantly boosted our productivity.

The surge protector feature gives me peace of mind, knowing that our valuable equipment is shielded from any unexpected power surges. Moreover, the smart capabilities of the KP303 allow me to monitor energy usage in real-time, which is a boon for managing operational costs more effectively.

But perhaps the most significant impact has been on our vlogging and streaming activities. With the ability to remotely control the power strip, I can easily manage the lighting and camera equipment's power settings from anywhere in the studio, even while live. This flexibility has enhanced the quality of our content, making our sessions more dynamic and engaging for our audience.

In essence, the Kasa Smart Plug Power Strip by TP-Link (KP303) has not just been a tool but a transformative addition to our studio. It's rare to find a product that can make such a substantial difference in so many areas of our business, from the workshop floor to the digital space where we connect with our followers. I couldn't recommend it highly enough to fellow creators and business owners in the creative industry.
