Set up a Smart Device

There are a number of ways to start building a connected home. Before you begin, plug in and power on your device, making sure your Echo is within 10 metres. Then say, “Alexa, discover devices”.

You can also add devices through the Alexa app, but first you must complete setup using the manufacturer’s companion app or website. Once completed, follow the steps below to link your device to Alexa:
  1. Open the Alexa app.
  2. Tap More and select Add a Device.
  3. Select the type of smart home device you want to connect.
  4. Select the brand and follow the on-screen instructions.

Learning to use your smart camera

Alexa compatible Smart cameras offer peace of mind that the things that matter most to you are safe and secure. Use your Echo Show device or the Alexa app to keep an eye on your sleeping bub, see who’s at the door, or check on your pet when you’re away from home.

Get notified in real-time

Want to be notified if there is motion is detected at the front door, or back garden? Simply follow the below steps for Alexa to keep you informed.
  1. Open the Alexa app.
  2. Open Devices from the bottom menu.
  3. Select Cameras and choose your device.
  4. Select the Cog in the top right corner.
  5. Toggle on Motion Announcements.

Combine your Smart Camera and Lights

With Alexa Routines you can make your home smarter by automating actions with one single request. You can view existing Routines in the Alexa app by selecting the More tab, Routines and Featured across the top navigation. Alternatively you can try the below:

Automatically turn on your lights when a person is detected on camera. To enable, try saying:

Create your own automated actions from scratch in the Alexa app. There are endless possibilities!
To get started follow the steps below:
  1. Open the Alexa app.
  2. Select More from the bottom navigation.
  3. Select Routines from the menu.
  4. Hit the + button in the top right corner.
  5. Name your Routine.
  6. Tap “When this happens” - you can choose the triggers that will initiate the Routine (e.g. by an utterance or at a certain time).
  7. Tap “Add action” - Add the actions you want the Routine to include (e.g. play music, read the news).
  8. Tap Save.

Don’t have a Smart Camera?

You can use the camera on your Echo Show to monitor your home. On your device follow the steps below:
  1. Swipe down on the screen and select Settings.
  2. Go to Camera.
  3. Toggle on Home Monitoring.
To view your camera live in the Alexa app:
  1. Open the Alexa app.
  2. Open Devices from the bottom menu
  3. Select Cameras and choose your device
To receive real-time alerts when motion is detected:
  1. Open the Alexa app.
  2. Open Devices from the bottom menu
  3. Select Cameras and choose your device
  4. Select the Cog in the top right corner
  5. Toggle on Motion Announcements.

A: To rename devices that have already been set up:

Open the Alexa app.
Open Devices from the bottom menu.
Select the device you’d like to rename.
Select the cog in the right hand corner.
Select Edit Name.

Expand your Smart Home

Lighting
Smart lights can be controlled through your phone or by voice when paired with Alexa. You can create Timers and Routines to automate your entire Smart Home lighting setup.

Cameras
Smart cameras let you monitor activity inside and around your home. After connecting your cameras to Alexa, you can view footage on compatible Echo devices or in the Amazon Alexa app.

Televisions
