Setting up a Smart Light

There are a number of ways to start building a connected home. Before you begin, plug in and power on your device, making sure your Echo is within 10 meters. Then say, “Alexa, discover devices.”

You can also add devices through the Alexa app, but first you must complete setup using the manufacturer’s companion app or website. Once completed, follow the steps below to link your device to Alexa:
  1. Open the Alexa app.
  2. Tap More and select Add a Device.
  3. Select the type of smart home device you want to connect.
  4. Select the brand and follow the on-screen instructions.

Learning to use your smart light

Having to get up to flick a light switch is a thing of the past thanks to voice-controlled lights with Alexa. Whether you’re dimming the lights for movie night, unwinding in the bath with mood lighting, or scheduling your porch light to turn on at night, Alexa is on hand to help.

Try saying:
Alexa, turn on the kitchen lights
Alexa, dim the bedroom lights
Alexa, turn the living room lamp blue
Alexa, turn off the porch light at 10pm
Alexa, turn on the office light for 20 minutes
Alexa, wake me up with bedroom lights at 7am

Group your devices

Make your life easier by turning on multiple lights at once. To create a room or device group, follow the steps below:
  1. Open the Alexa app.
  2. Open Devices from the bottom menu.
  3. Select the + sign in the top right hand corner.
  4. Select Add Group and follow the on-screen instructions.
Try saying:
Alexa, turn on the kitchen lights
Alexa, turn on the outside lights at 6pm

Automate actions

With Alexa Routines you can make your home smarter by grouping multiple actions with one single request. You can view existing Routines in the Alexa app by selecting the More tab, Routines and Featured across the top navigation. Alternatively you can try the below:

Automatically turn on your smart light at sunset.
To enable, try saying “Alexa, enable Sunset Lights Routine

Turn your lights off at night and play sleep sounds.
To enable, try saying, “Alexa, enable the Good Night Routine

Turn off your lights when no one is detected in the room for 30 minutes.
To enable, try saying, “Alexa, enable Vacant Lights Routine

Have a great idea for your own Routine?

Create your own automated actions from scratch in the Alexa app. There are endless possibilities!
To get started follow the steps below:
  1. Open the Alexa app.
  2. Select More from the bottom navigation.
  3. Select Routines from the menu.
  4. Hit the + sign in the top right corner.
  5. Name your Routine.
  6. Tap “When this happens” - you can choose the triggers that will initiate the Routine (e.g. by an utterance or at a certain time).
  7. Tap “Add action” - Add the actions you want the Routine to include (e.g. play music, read the news).
  8. Tap Save.

Advanced Tip: Wake-Up Lighting

Wake-Up Lighting is the latest feature introduced to Alexa. With a dimmable smart light, Wake-Up Lighting simulates sunrise before your alarm. To set up Wake-Up Lighting follow the steps below:

Say “Alexa, wake me with bedroom lights at 7AM”* to the Echo device in your bedroom.
OR, open the Alexa app on your phone or tablet and click on More, select Alarms & Timers, select Add Alarm or tap on existing Alarm to edit the settings, enable Wake-Up Lighting.

*Alexa-enabled Smart Lights required. Device name can be set within the Alexa app.

Q: How do I rename my device?
A: To rename devices that have already been set up:

Open the Alexa app.
Open Devices from the bottom menu.
Select the device you’d like to rename.
Select the cog in the right hand corner.
Select Edit Name

Q: What other colours are available for my lights?
A: View the device colour range in the Alexa app.

Once you decide which colour you like, you can say “Alexa, turn the Office light to orange”.

Q: Can I use my FireTV to control my smart devices?
A: To use your FireTV to control your smart devices:

Tap on Smart Home.
Select a device and manage your home.

Expand your Smart Home

Lighting
Smart lights can be controlled through your phone or by voice when paired with Alexa. You can create Timers and Routines to automate your entire Smart Home lighting setup.

Cameras
Smart cameras let you monitor activity inside and around your home. After connecting your cameras to Alexa, you can view footage on compatible Echo devices or in the Amazon Alexa app.

Televisions
Smart TVs let you use your voice to open streaming apps, change the channel, adjust the volume, and more when paired with an Alexa-enabled device. When you're done watching, just say, "Alexa, turn off the TV".
