With this Nokia phone, from fully off: time to switch on and make a call - 15 seconds! I struggled to do the same in under 2 minutes once my software-laden smartphone had 'got out of bed'. Leave it on standby then? Battery goes flat within a day, so one is constantly plugging it in. Plus I can hardly see the screen in bright sunlight. These basic phones with physical keypads win hands down to make calls. They better not stop making them! Smartphones, in my opinion, should be renamed 'mini tablets'.

A note on PAYG tariffs which vary wildly: some network's sim cards do not work with this simple type of phone. The cheap 3 network's PAYG sim is an example. Go to mobile networks comparison table websites to see similar cheap tariffs, usually on 'virtual networks'. I am Delighted by the cheap PAYG rate sim I'm now using.
