Challenging and Fun Install!
Before I write my review here are my thoughts. This install was hella fun and challenging, as someone that loves taking apart electronics and putting them back together I had an absolute BLAST doing this, seeing all the components and just how the Steam Deck was put together was a uniquely fun experience. Now to the review:Taking apart the steamdeck is not difficult, eXtremeRate has a video guide for removing all the components and reassembling the steam deck with your new shell, which is INCREDIBLY helpful, 100% you should be watching that video.Like I mentioned taking apart the steam deck isnt difficult you just need to be cautious and attentive as to not damage any of the components. While disassembling my steam deck I noticed that naturally the screws internally are screwed on incredibly tight and I was worried about putting too much pressure on the components initially and later on when I'd need to screw them back in again. But the components that gave me problems were the:- Touch pads- Screen- And the battery (weird I know but Ill get into that later)Touchpads:The touch pads arent difficult to remove but reassembling them was a challenge. (I didnt swap out my touch pads, not because it was tedious, but because I like the contrast of the black with the Atomic purple) The touch pads are screwed in to a certain amount so that they are functional, my first time screwing them in I tightened them too much and the touch pad wouldnt even click or move, and when too lose they just shake around like crazy, so finding that balance is key. Also remember how your touch pads "feel" so that you can refer to that when re-assembling.Screen:The screen was the ONLY component I was initially worried about, my best advice is TAKE YOUR TIME, and be VERY gentle when prying it out from original shell, even with the screen heated up it is difficult to pry apart, so repetitively heating up one or two sides of the scree and inserting the plastic pick they give you and running it throughout the screen is basically your best friend, you'll be doing that a lot. However I did encounter a problem, I didnt heat up the screen to the ideal temperature and bent one of the ends of the tip which scratched away the paint on the outer area of the screen which left it being see-through. If this happens to you I found using a sharpie helped a lot in filling in scratched paint. The battery:Im not sure if this a universal Steam Deck problem, but at the end of my install my Steam Deck wouldnt boot, I took everything apart and put it back together thinking it was a lose connection or something, and the same thing happened. I ended up plugging my steamdeck to its charger and it booted after 5 minutes and proceeded to do that EVERY SINGLE TIME, I took apart the steam deck one last time and noticed that there is a "sweet" spot for the cable from the battery that connects to the motherboard. So when reassembling either take note of how your power cable to the motherboard is connected, or when reassembling plug in the cable slowly until your power LED light turns on, when I did this method, the steam deck booted up instantly, being the anxious dude I am, I ended up plugging the power cable till it barley touched the end, and it still functioned as normal. Now that we have the install out of the way lets get to the actual shell.- The feel - The plastic of the shell feels premium, its definitely different from the original case in terms of feel, but if you've had any old nintendo device it feels very similar.- Build quality - the shell is a little flimsy without any components in it, but once you have it assembled it feels solid. (This was not intentional but I dropped my steam deck over 5 feet and the it survived with barley any scuffs, so I can attest that it can hold up.)- Build Accuracy:Now I have some complaints about the shell but this is more of me being a perfectionist. While assembling the steam deck with its new shell, I noticed that the Power Button, LED, Volume Button's did not align perfectly. Now this doesn't interfere with performance, nor did I force anything into place, but the LED is slightly off center, while the power button and volume buttons are a little wobbly, I hardly notice it while im playing, I cant even hear them moving around but they do.Final Thoughts:Overall, this project was incredibly fun! I loved every bit of it, and felt very rewarded at the end. I would say anyone can do this, you just need to be steady enough to remove the screws without damaging the components with the screwdriver. This entire install took me 5 hours, this includes the dissasembly, organizing components, cleaning all the components, re-applying new thermal paste, assembling everything into the new case and trouble shooting at the end.

The quality is great but I wouldn't recommend this to anyone the steam deck is extremely fragile and breaks if you look at it funny and this swap is a monolithic nightmare of complexity and things to go wrong. If you successfully shell swap the device buy a lottery ticket and thank God because you are clearly blessed by the Lord above but if not you wasted about 550 dollars because you wanted a fancy color and trust me you can't do the shell swap consistently. I take stuff apart as a hobby and it is completely impossible for me.

This install was hella fun and challenging, as someone that loves taking apart electronics and putting them back together I had an absolute BLAST doing this, seeing all the components and just how the Steam Deck was put together was a uniquely fun experience.

Now to the review:

Taking apart the steamdeck is not difficult, eXtremeRate has a video guide for removing all the components and reassembling the steam deck with your new shell, which is INCREDIBLY helpful, 100% you should be watching that video.

Like I mentioned taking apart the steam deck isnt difficult you just need to be cautious and attentive as to not damage any of the components. Touchpads:
The touch pads arent difficult to remove but reassembling them was a challenge. Overall, I've used ExtremeRate kits before to mod some controllers and found them to be extremely high quality. Finding out they had a clear blue shell for my Steam deck was an instant buy for me, especially on sale on Prime Days!

The whole process took me just ender 3 hours and looks awesome. However, I do have some gripes.

#1. There needs to be some kind of legend showing how many of each type of screw there is. They come in two baggies all mixed together, and while the pictures in the video tutorial show differences between some of them (flat vs rounded head), actually telling them apart was frustrating. In the end, I used a bunch of the original screws that came out of the stock case as there didn't seem to be enough of the midsize black ones.

#2 The paddle buttons. The buttons themselves aren't the issue, their screws are. The lower three screws on each paddle assembly work perfectly fine, but at the top screw the shell is much narrower. This resulted is white stress marks at each one, despite not being tightened right up. (Pictures 3 and 4 on my review.). This is not the end of the world by any means, but I feel these screws should probably be about 1 mm shorter to avoid this.

Overall, I feel the case is fantastic, and maybe it's wishful thinking, but it does seem more sturdy than the stock shell. I opted to use the original track pads and buttons in lieu of the included transparent ones, but to each their own. As other review have mentioned, use a plastic guitar pick to loosen up the screen when you get to that step. Do NOT use the metal one unless you are very careful about how far under you put it, especially on the right side of the screen where there is a lot less clearance between you and the fragile bits. Just a few improvements to make the process smoother for customers would be appreciated, and you've got a killer piece of kit!

Sure it looks cool, but believe me when i say that the plastic quality is extremely cheap… once it’s on, NEVER think of taking it off for whatever reasons. The plastic thread will tear out as you pull the screw out and the safety clip will bend and break. It’s a wow effect made cheaply.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very nice shell, but a complicated swapping process

Very impressed with the quality and fit of this shell. Everything is molded exactly the same size and dimensions as the Valve shell originally. It looks great, has a fantastic feel and surface finish, the buttons all fit together perfectly and work as expected, the instructional video is *very* thorough and good.

I'm particularly impressed with the detail of the shell, it includes replacement and color correct pieces for every single button, including the power/volume buttons, trackpad covers, the shoulder buttons, etc. Most of the time I've seen console replacement shells they usually only replace the "main" parts they can get away with. This is a super thorough kit!

My only complaints, if any, are that the screws given with the kit are just jumbled together in a single bag and it's very difficult to tell which ones are supposed to be used where.

That said - and this is absolutely no fault of the replacement shell - this is a *really* intricate process to totally disassemble the Deck. Valve made the thing pretty repair friendly, the entire console can be disassembled with screws, *except* the screen. The screen is adhesion-ed on to the console, removing it is a stressful and frustrating process, and you risk damaging/breaking the screen in a couple ways. There's also quite a few fragile ribbon cables inside with very small and finicky latches, pay attention to how the latches are flipped up and the cables removed, don't yank on them too hard!

The instructional video included with the kit is REALLY good, it's also REALLY long, don't skip it, don't try and find some shortcut, spend the time to sit down and follow along.

A few tips from my swap:
- Keep your screws really organized, I have a magnetic screw organizer mat, but some small bowls or piece of cardboard with some tape on it also works great. Don't mix the screws up!
- When you remove the screen, be VERY careful not to stick the guitar pick/spudger too far under the screen, the instruction video says "don't do more than 3mm" but doesn't explain _why_ - the ribbon cable connecting the screen's panel to it's controller is very close to one of the side edges, it's very easy to damage especially when you're jabbing in there with a metal pick to try and pry the screen loose. Damage that cable and you'll need a whole new screen!!!
- Replacing the trackpad covers is the only other really difficult part, the trackpad sits on a funky wavy spring along with it's vibration motor for the haptics feedback, then the cover with the actual "tracking" part is snapped on top, there's several ribbon cables and sensitive springs around it, so go slow and take your time! Use a hair dryer or heat gun to warm up the top of the trackpad before removing it from the adhesive
- Highly recommend getting a couple nicer spudgers or guitar picks for disassembly, the ones included in the kit are pretty cheap

Pictures don't make justice, this shell is beautiful!
It is really painful to do the swap, it took me like 3 hours and all the time I regretted what I was doing, telling to myself "why I'm doing this, I had a working steam deck, I don't know if I can put it back together"
Follow the video, keep the order of pieces, take your time, be extra careful with the connectors.
I see in other reviews that they provide a metal pick to remove the screen, I got a plastic one and I recommend you using a plastic one, otherwise you could scratch the screen.
I kept the same screws and the same buttons, pads and triggers, I like them better.
One thing that happened to me is that when I was done and tested it, no control was working. I went over all the connections and found out a couple of ribbons that I had to push in completely. After that everything worked as before.
Another thing is that the left trigger was scratching something inside. I thought that the case was not perfect. I loosened the base plate that holds the trigger, pushed it to the center and tightened the screws again, the scratching was gone.
Now it looks amazing and also feels better in my hands. The finish is glossy.

It was a really fun project to switch the shells
The replacement she'll had an awesome feel and the color is great. It has all the replacement screws in case you strip any during change
I kept some of the original buttons as I feel they match better, provide a greater contrast.

So far I purchased two shells. Translucent black and gradient blue/purple. Both have a weak point above the screen. The crack happened when I first opened the box, when I had to separate both back and front shell. I won't install it incase I waste my time
