Perfect if you're just getting into streaming...but it has it's limits

Perfect if you're just getting into streaming...but it has it's limits
Capture cards like this are pretty much a necessity if you ever want to stream your console gameplay. While it is not perfect (choices were made and there's a few small details that caught my eye), I think for the money it works pretty well.UNBOXING AND FIRST IMPRESSIONS:The packaging was a bit on the generic side; literally just says Video Capture Card on the front and a quick feature list on the back and no branding to found on the box or the capture card itself (a common characteristic among dropshipped items. Despite that, it did its job and kept the capture card and cable in excellent condition. The capture card itself has an all metal construction, which feels nice in the hand and even when I press down hard on it, there is literally no bending or flexing of the casing. The cable is just your typical generic rubber and hard plastic, but it gets the job done. it's straightforward plug-n-play; the HDMI goes into your console, the single USB-A goes into the capture card, and the USB-A or USB-C goes into your PC running a streaming software of your choice!THE SMALL QUIRKS:I was surprised to find out that it doesn't have an HDMI passthrough or even require it's own power supply via USB. While I wasn't concerned that it would be getting adequate power, I was concerned that the lack of passthrough to an external monitor or display would increase latency (and would be exacerbated by the fact that this is limited to USB 2.0).Going back to the dropshipping claim, my suspicions were confirmed when I pulled out the instructions manual and I noticed that not only are there two different models of this capture card, but that both of them have INPUT/OUTPUT labels on either side, but this capture card does not (as seen in the photo). This probably means that the instructions were definitely made by someone else, outside of wherever they made this capture card. Interesting....STREAMING TEST:Because this particular capture card doesn't have its own software, I decided to use OBS as my software of choice for a quick streaming test (which my dumb self forgot to record lol). Everything was simple plug-n-play, and the video feed of my console (I used my Switch) showed up immediately on my PC.Right off the bat, I noticed quite a bit of lag between my inputs on the Switch controller and my streaming feed on OBS. I hadn't even started a game yet; I was just navigating through the Switch UI. This is probably where the upgrade to USB 3.0 and the inclusion of an HDMI passthrough to a display would've helped, but that would probably jack up the price of this very affordable capture card. However, unless the game your playing requires instantaneous and precise inputs, I don't think the lag I noticed on here will be a big dealbreaker for most.VERDICT:Given how this is pretty much a white label [dropshipped] capture card whose main purpose is to stream your console feed to the Internet, it does succeed in that regard. However, depending on who you are what your needs are, the USB 2.0 limit and the lack of HDMI passthrough to a display for lag-free gameplay might make you look elsewhere and probably spend a bit more. But if you're just getting into streaming and you wanna use what you currently have first, this affordable capture card will definitely help you get started.

Update, the product company contacted me and offered to replaced the defective cable. I received it within 4 days and everything works perfectly now! Updating stars.

Unfortunately the USBC part of the cable is unrecognizable by any device I plug it into. I had a spare USB to USBC adapter that I used with and got it working.

I don't know why there is a "Camera Quality" star rating as this is not a camera so I will use that rating as the construction quality and assume it is somehow marked as a camera on amazon as it's... kind of like a camera..? anyway to the review.

For the price this is a very nice capture card yet as the market for capture cards only recently became inexpensive it is expected that those ones would be the cheep ones. This card is no exception but is on the better side of quality as far as cheep things go.
The frame of it is made of aluminum and the PCB is a compact design. The printing on the back the product includes a QC passed sticker the CE logo the FC logo recycle logo ROHS compliant logo and what I am remembering to be a fair-trade logo? Can’t remember what the two arrows in a circle white and black spiralling around the centre means. The product is also exactly as described including imagery. (a little to literally as you will see down bellow) This product is great for those who are just starting out like me in the YouTube or streaming space specifically for PC-to-PC recording.
However, as a cheep product it has its quirks. (Fortunately, most have workarounds as I will tell you)
They are.
1
Though this capture card has a nice video quality and can do 1080p 60fps it unfortunately struggles to output anything not native (1080p). And yes, I mean resolutions like 720p or 480p. these have visual artificing which makes the footage unacceptable. However, though it struggles with nonnative output resolution, every resolution I have put into the input has had no problems at all and converts 720p and even my laptops 1366x768 in to 1080p without problems. (I have not tried significantly different aspect ratios) on the upside every frame rate I have tried outputting or imputing into it I have not noticed any problems with. (But considering I record at 30fps take that with a grain of salt)
2
Colour balance. Unfortunately, the colour balance of this product I can at most describe as good. And has a greenish hew (the clip is colour corrected with the settings below)
3
The audio output of this device though it is a nice fast 96kh is also mono and this can not be changed. If your system does not like 96kh this also can not be changed.at least the mono is both channels combined and not just one.
4
on some devices I have noticed V Sync problems. This is visible in the clip I have uploaded to this review.
5
It seamed like It died 5 days ago but I found out latter that it had not.
Workarounds
1
Though the native resolution outputting can not be 720p you can send 720p video into it and on the receiving PC Downscale it back to 720p this does have some slight quality loss but overall it is not bad and I have not noticed any.
2
to properly fix the colour balance you would need access to the brightness contrast and gamma of each of the Red the Green and the Blue. However, by using my photo editor and making a CMY RGB palette with different brightness on it and recording on the capture card, by using the colour picker in the photo editor I could record how far off from perfect the colours where and used that data to tune a colour filter to fix it as best as I could.
The settings I used in OBS to fix this with a colour filter were.
Gama -0.07
Contrast 0.08
Brightness -0.0019
Saturation -0.06
Hue Shift 0
Opacity 1
Colour multiply #fff7ff
Colour Add #000000
(Note that your capture card may vary and no I have no idea what these numbers are equivalent to in other programs.)
3
The solution to this problem was actually to use the VBAN protocol though a program. I chose Voice Meter, (I would put a link but that is understandably against Amazon’s review policy as they don’t want people getting scammed though links on there page so you can look it up yourself). Using VBAN was extremely effective and solved my problem completely as it allowed me to have multiple channels of audio with no noise and little delay that can be made up for in recording/streaming software via AV Sync offsets. If you are planning on recording a game console. I would recommend finding a USB Bluetooth audio receiver to connect to your console.
4
This might or might not be a problem with that laptop that I used to record the clip in particular and not the capture card but if it is the capture card the problem happens on some devices and not others.
5
That day I unplugged it from everything for more than 10 seconds and this somehow fixed it so take that how you will. Before that both the Outputting PC and the receiving one were detecting the device there just was no video feed.

So over all especially if you are doing a PC-to-PC setup and if you are just getting into things a little bit of tuning is all you need to make this card work great. 👍

Note that I have no connection with the brands or products that are or own OBS, VBAN, or Voice Meter other than that I use the products.

This is a great HDMI/USB adapter that just works (plug'n'play for Windows*) without any user intervention during driver install. It's able to take 4K@60FPS as input; however, the OUTPUT is only supported at 1080p@60FPS which is considered to be low by today's standard but is still adequate in most cases. Though, it is higher than MANY other budget capture adapters since most of them only support 1080p@30Hz as output. The quality for both video and audio are pretty decent without much degradation for a 1080p video.

The overall physical build seems decent without any visible defects and it's got aluminum alloy casing (that all/most others have as well). However, unlike most others that has USB-A male connector at the USB end, it's has a USB-A female port along with a USB-A/A cable with a past-through USB-C connector which is nice.

Although this might seem odd, it's actually (or at least can be) much more preferable for some IF you have a tight space around the USB ports because this adapter is significantly larger than your ordinary USB drives etc and it might NOT fit well or could block other USB ports if it were to be inserted directly into the USB port on your computer (particularly for laptops where it might have limited space). It eliminates this issue by using an USB cable instead.

≡ Value
All things considered, this is a decent HDMI/USB capture adapter that works as expected with decent video/audio quality and it's reasonably priced at $20 for its usability, overall video/audio quality, and the 2-in-1 cable provided.

This isn't bad per say but if you're looking for a device to record gameplay I think its a better option to go for the AverMedia Mini. This device says 4k 60fps but trying to capture 4k 60 on OBS end up looking choppy, lower than 30 even. For a smooth capture I had to set to 1080p or 720p. Bitrate also seems to be an issue whether set to 4k or 1080p the video capture has visible compression artifacts.
Your use case might differ but for me (someone who wants to record gameplay) this device doesn't capture at a high enough quality for me. The AverMedia (about 100) is a better option for me.

This is a great HDMI to USB capture device. Setup was extremely simple, by simply plugging into my windows based PC the drivers were automatically installed. The only small downside is capture software is not provided however numerous ones can be downloaded for free. I used the Camera software that comes with windows and it instantly found the capture device. As an IT professional this lil well built device is great for me to be able to capture installations or configurations in real time for training or demonstrations.
This is now added to my daily work tool kit and a HUGE time saver for me.

On the other end I connected a USB-C to HDMI cable to my galaxy phone and was able to view Samsung Dex working properly. Their is some very slight latency which is to be expected, but for the price point and convenience, you can use it for a ton of different applications.

I'm giving this three stars because I'm not sure how to use this or for what. There are TWO versions of this card, one with a male input that goes directly into a laptop. Then this one that has TWO female ports. It comes with an HDMI input and has a female output that plugs into a USB that it comes with. However one of the sides of the USB has an extra piece that plugs into my MacBook. I think that's a thunder bolt. I tried hooking up my external monitor to it but it did not work. I'm thinking I don't understand exactly what this is for,
