Easy to setup and use, but drives can get hot
I bought this to replace two external drives (8 TB and 3TB WD MyBook) that were connected to my server. I had bought two 8 TB WD Gold drives, and needed an enclosure that could house all four of my drives.I decided on the TerraMaster D4-300 as it didn't indicate it had compatibility issues with the WD Gold drives. After using it for several weeks, here are my thoughts:Pros:* The hard drive installation was easy and all four drives were recognized by Windows. In my case it was 8 TB WD Gold x 2, 8 TB WD White Label (shucked from MyBook), 3 TB WD Green (shucked from MyBook).* Single drive speed was 150 - 160 MB/s which is good. Once multiple drives were in use - copying files to two or more drives - the speeds were drop as the drives shared the 150 - 160 MB/s throughput. Each drive speed is also dependent on the drive.* Works with my setup using Stablebit DrivePool and Scanner.* No connection/disconnection issues so far.Cons:* The fans in the back are basically useless - they don't seem to move much air which is the reason I gave this 4 stars instead of 5. Since I came up with a solution (see next point), I decided not to give it 3 stars.* The 8 TB drives became toasty - 48 - 50 degress Celsius. This was the same as when the 8 TB drive was in its enclosure without any fans. Too hot for my liking. To solve this I placed an AC Infinity 80mm fan at the front of the enclosure that is blowing air into the drive bays (see picture). The temps of the 8 TB drives are now 39-42 degress Celsius.Overall, this is a good enclosure that has worked well for me. I had no issues with installing the drives and having Windows detect each one properly. The fans in the rear don't move enough air to cool the drive properly, but a fan in the front solved that issue. Not the best, but it works. If they can provide better fans, then this would be a 5 star enclosure.

I bought this unit because reviews implied that it does not suffer from a bug/limitation that nearly all other 4-bay external USB hard drive enclosures I found did, which is that nearly all others will disconnect all four hard drives every time you hot-plug a single one.

This is very disruptive if you're in the middle of doing stuff with drives in the other slots, and I'm happy to confirm that this TerraMaster unit does NOT suffer from this design flaw. Each drive is treated totally independently, and otherwise it is reliable, quiet (despite having fans, which keep the drives very cool) and does not appear to bottleneck the drive throughput meaningfully. Highly recommended.

I used this to set up a unraid server. Two 1TB drives and two ssd 256 cache drives. Quiet and had all the drives installed in 10 minutes. The case is very solid and the fan is office quiet.

These are my initial impressions after unboxing and trying to set it up. The case feels solid but the trays the two side pieces on each tray are of cheap plastic and feel very flimsy. The two side tray pieces will break easily if pushed with too much force, so be careful.

I installed 2 3.5" HDDs but so far, and both LEDs on the front of the box are it, so I think they're powered up ok. Windows only sees one of the two HDDs in the Disk Management control panel, so not much joy there. They're both Linux filesystems so I'll reboot to Linux and try again.

I installed a 2.5" SSD, which I'm sure has Windows installed, but the LED on the front of the Terramaster isn't lit, so I don't think it's recognised. I'll try rebooting and see if Linux can see it.

So far, minimal progress with accessing the drives, and the build quality of the trays are disappointing.

Will I return it? That depends if I can access the drives or not.

I had a pro box previously and it was OK but it always seem to lag speed wise. It finally started giving me issues and so I upgraded to this hard drive storage container and I have to say it is fantastic it’s great looking solid materials easy install Toolis I know that is an important factor. I have installed two 4 TB drives so far in it one contains all of my work library of music and when I go to access stuff to edit or play there is no lag it’s right there ready to go. I would highly recommend this unit if you don’t need to run reid.

Very easy to install and work with. If you do not need a RAID setup it is a great choice. Perfect for video editing and applications requiring a lot of disk storage. Transfer speed is very good, and the price is right.
