Pros:- Good image and video quality for the cost, excellent night vision- Can install MicroSD card for 24/7 video recording without paying a subscription fee- Small camera that is easy to install- App loads faster than other camera apps like Ring or Skybell- Can display camera on a TV using Alexa and devices like a Fire TV stickCons:- Must pay subscription for cloud-based storage- Video can stutter with moving objects- The Wyze Cam V3 Pro is not worth the extra money over the standard Wyze Cam V3Review:Wyze cameras are a low-cost option to add security cameras to your home both indoors and outdoors. I also use Ring and Skybell cameras which cost over two hundred dollars each, but purchased multiple Wyze cameras to cover additional locations for a lower cost. Installation does not require professional help as it can be as simple as sitting it against a window and plugging it into power to view outside your home (as opposed to hard wiring it outside or buying a camera that requires replacing a battery).The software allows the image to be rotated 180 degrees if hung upside down but does not include any other rotation options (e.g. for side-mounting). However, the camera comes with a built-in swivel mount to attach it in different orientations (including side-mounting). It can be secured with screws, adhesive, or through the built in magnet in the base.Image and video quality are good, especially for the price. The video quality is not as good as my wired Ring Floodlight Cam, but it still does a reasonable job. For example, the video can sometimes stutter or become pixelated with moving objects (e.g. moving car or person). Night vision is excellent and is better than my first-generation Ring Floodlight Cam (2017) and on par with my Ring Floodlight Cam Wired Plus (2021) but at a quarter the price. In low light conditions I see colour and can read my license plate in the dark with the street lights behind my car. In very dark conditions, I can see everything in black and white (even details like the bark on a tree). I can even see objects 50 feet away in the dark.The Wyze camera requires a subscription to save videos to the cloud ($3.55 CAD / month, or $24.99 / year per camera). In comparison, Ring costs $5.99 / month or $59.99 / year per camera. One advantage Wyze has over Ring is it allows you to install a MicroSD card (not included) to record and play back videos 24/7 without paying for a subscription. It also captures thumbnails to show when motion is detected which you can then playback through the app by viewing the MicroSD. I installed a SanDisk 128GB High Endurance microSDHC and it worked right out of the box without special formatting.Through the app, you can select which areas in the camera’s field of view to detect and notify you of motion. Unfortunately, I still get too many notifications even while using the Cam Plus paid service. Although I excluded the sidewalk and street in front of my house in my detection zone, the camera is still triggered by shadows (e.g. from cars or people) or sudden light changes (e.g. headlights). I use my cameras indoors to look outdoors through a window. This picks up a lot of light reflection from my room (I can see my own reflection) even when the camera is pressed right against the window. There is an optional Window Mount ($17.99), but I do not like the idea of sticking my camera to my window as I can no longer move it. Instead, I used electrical tape on my window to surround my camera by about 1 inch. This eliminated the reflection. Also be sure to disable your spotlight and Night Vision IR lights in very dark conditions as it can blind your camera due to reflection on the glass.There is no switch to disable the mic on the camera for privacy. You can disable it in the app to prevent sound from recording, but in reality, it can still pick up sound. For example, when I used my Fire TV Stick to display my camera on my TV, I could hear the sound in the room my camera was installed. To get around this, I put electrical tape over the mic hole which physically prevents the camera from picking up sound. I tested this by placing a radio beside my camera and turning my phone volume up to maximum. I could not hear the radio at all through the app once the mic hole was covered.Comparing the Wyze Cam V3 and the Wyze Cam V3 Pro:The review I wrote above applies to both the Wyze Cam V3 and the Wyze Cam V3 Pro. The differences are listed below.- Cost at time of writing: $44.99 (V3) vs $69.99 (V3 Pro)- Resolution: 1920 x 1080 (V3) vs 2560 x 1440 (V3 Pro)- Dimensions: Virtually identical (approximately 2 x 2 x 2” excluding the stand)- Spotlight: V3 sold separately ($24.99), V3 Pro built inAlthough the Pro has a higher resolution, from a practical standpoint it is difficult to see any real improvement in image quality over the standard V3 (see included picture comparison). In the app, the V3 actually operates faster than the Pro. For example, it takes an average of 0.96 s to skip 30 seconds backwards or forwards in the video for the V3 and 2.9s for the Pro. This is noticeable when you are trying to quickly skip through a video by pressing the skip button multiple times. This may vary with the speed of your MicroSD.The biggest disadvantage the Pro has over the standard V3 is that it does not work with Cam Plus Lite. Wyze confirmed that Cam Plus Lite will only work with cameras released before 2/1/2021. Cam Plus Lite is the original cloud-based video storage Wyze offered customers for free. It provided 12 seconds of video storage on the cloud per event. The Pro model only provides low resolution thumbnails (640 x 360) for motion events. This may not be an issue for some users as you can still use the thumbnail to playback video from the microSD. However, a thief can simply steal your camera to prevent you from accessing your videos making cloud based storage important if you want video evidence of a theft. Unfortunately, the thumbnails are too low resolution to make out details which limits its effectiveness as a security camera.Why buy the Wyze Cam V3 Pro over the standard V3?- You want a built-in spotlight- You plan to pay for the subscription and prefer the slightly better resolution- You have an extra $25 you’d like to donate to WyzeOverall, I gave the Wyze Cam V3 five out of five stars as it is an excellent option at a low-cost point. I gave the Wyze Cam V3 Pro three out of five. It is still an excellent camera, but not worth the extra money over the standard V3.
