Older versions (8.2) will run trouble free one day and lock up every few minutes another. It is extremely frustrating. All the newer versions, without exception, are even worse. The last one we tried, version 8.10.4 is, somehow, the worse to date. It doesn't seem to pick-up the cameras that the previous version was connected to, nor is it able to recognize cameras that offer right-left and up-down capabilities.
Just to be clear, whether the computer is running Windows 10, or another totally different and newer computer is running Windows 11, the result is the same. Reolink's software locks up randomly; not great if the person monitoring the video feed fails to notice that the displayed time from the cameras stopped some time ago.
While I can understand, and excuse teething pains in a new company, this Windows software situation, considering that Microsoft has the biggest share of the Operating System market, is ridiculous.
Reolink, it's time to step up your game.
Revised on November 30 2023.
I recently installed Reolink's newest software for Windows. What a change! This new version v8.14.2 is stable and works reliably. If installing it, make to uninstall ANY previous version. And we are now running 16 Reolink cameras. Take that as a vote of confidence.
The main drawback is the pan and tilt. it works great and tracks well but after it tracks motion a few times, it loses it's monitoring point and stays stuck facing to the extreme right (or left) and won't return to the monitoring point, at which time you need to go into the app and reset the monitoring point again. This happens very regularly. Not sure if it is a firmware issue or a mechanical issue.
EDIT: Reolink customer service was fantastic and responded quickly to the issue, sent me a new camera that is working very well with no issues and refunded me the shipping cost to send the old camera back. Upgrading the rating from a 3 star to a 5 star.
It does detect and follow a person, however it seems to lag/blur if the person is moving fast. On occasion it swivels too far and faces the wall for a bit. I need to check if I can set how far it swivels maybe set to 270 Degrees. Setup with the Synology NAS was easy and both Reolink and Synology provides setup instructions. (The Synology NAS comes with 2 licenses). So far the only other complaint I have is it loses connection for about 30 secs occasionally. I do have it set to reboot nightly. A good product overall.
I moved the other Reolink elsewhere where a more static view is ideal.
First the cheap-out ... this thing can only PAN or TILT but not both at same time... WOW i have some old off brand chinese ones that can pan / tilt simultaneously .. shame on you Reolink !!
Next: Picture quality especially the focus is also a bad design... at night this thing was pulsing in & out of focus both in color and black & white modes... auto focus problems! IF ise it to manual focus, then if daytime was clear, night was a total useless blur. OR if i focused for night, then daytime was a total blur. Firmware was latest, so no help that way.
Motion tracking.... it was so so BUT with a big problem... when io saw it tracking me i just ducked down lower and it it did NOT tilt down to follow me... VERY EASY to get past it.
SO returned this one too.
"Please kindly allow me to explain that the guard point issue is related to the hardware design, thus the occasional position drift-off is hard to avoid 100 percent.
But our teams are working on this to optimize the guard point function."
The camera has good video and everything functions well except the camera does not return to the correct guard position. This makes the auto tracking feature useless. Reolink is aware of the problem and claims the problem will be fixed in future firmware up grades. Researching I see people have been reporting the problem since the camera's has been introduced.
Just to describe the problem in basic terms. The camera will detect a moving object and follow it but after the motion stops the camera is suppose to return to to its original position (guard point) it does not. Where it ends up pointing is random in some cases it ended up pointing at a wall instead of down the driveway. The camera is still useable if you disable the tracking (meaning the camera remains stationary).
I like the product and will certainly update this review if ever the problem is corrected.
However, it does not return to the "monitor point" you set after it moves. Very annoying. Googling the problem seems this is a common issue with this camera.

Local storage without a subscription. The camera can take a 256GB micro SD card and holds recordings for days and days. I have been using for a week and it's not even half full. You can go back to specific days and check the events by watching or downloading. Once the card is full it overwrites. What's nice is, because of the smart detection. I can filter out videos based on if it's a motion, vehicle, person, or animal event.
Constant power. I didn't want battery. This comes with its own power supply and a long extension cord. The extension cord is about 14 feet long with a few extra feet of cord on the power supply.
Wifi and Network capability. The Wifi connection is good. Able to connect on a 2.4ghz or 5ghz band. It also has an ethernet adapter. Also has the ability to connect with Alexa via a skills app. The Reolink app for alexa works great. I can ask Alexa to show me the camera on my Echo Show or Fire Tablet and it pulls it up with no problem
Setup was really simple. I connected it to my network via ethernet for the initial setup. Installed the app on my phone and went through the process. One thing I will stress. **UPDATE THE FIRMWARE** Not the app update. Go to the website and follow the instructions on how to download the latest firmware and how to update it. This solved some initial issues that I was having.
The Reolink phone app is great. Lots of different options to fiddle with. For example. Being able to setup non-detection zones (in my case blocking out the road so passing traffic doesn't trigger a recording), Night vision, motion tracking, color/black and white options, smart detection.... These are things that are fun to mess around with and decide what is right for you. Overall the app is very easy to use.
There are other things as well. Setting up a PC client, Accessing from a browser, using an FTP server, Remote monitoring, and the use of an NVR system.
And... the picture quality is great. Overall I am extremely happy with this purchase.

I currently own and use an Amcrest IP2M, a Wyze v2, and 3 Foscam R2C cameras. They all work more or less, but they are all very finnicky (especially when using WiFi). So, when I wanted to add another camera outside my house, I wanted to try a different manufacturer.
My specific needs were/are:
1. An outdoor camera
2. PTZ control
3. Has RTSP so I can monitor/record all my cameras from a computer on my network
4. Has 5Ghz WiFi since I don't want to run an Ethernet cable to the location this camera is at and 2.4Ghz hasn't been reliable for my outdoor cameras.
This camera seemed to fit the bill, so when it went on sale recently, I bought one. Boy, am I glad I did. This camera is leaps and bounds better than all my other cameras. I had no trouble setting it up, unlike the Foscam cameras. I also have had no problems with keeping a good connection on WiFi like all my other cameras.
I initially didn't know how to get the RTSP working and, based on other reviews, was worried that maybe this camera didn't have working RTSP. But, the missing piece of info from these reviews is you have to access the camera via your browser by using the camera's IP address. This gets you access to all the settings for the camera that you can't get from the Reolink phone app. The RTSP toggle is in Settings > Network Settings > Advanced > Port Settings (Set Up).
Not only does this camera have everything I needed, but it also has some really useful extras I wasn't expecting I would find useful. Things like FTP uploading, on-camera person and car detection, and auto return to position. There's also a Home Assistant custom integration for Reolink cameras that works with this camera so I can have notifications from Home Assistant when motion is detected.
The only downside of this camera that I can think of is that if you have the camera hanging up really high (like > 10 feet) it probably wouldn't be able to see directly below it. The camera can't look down all the way, so if you have it up high, you might have to reorient the camera sideways or something to see straight down from a high distance.
Anyway, this is already way too long, but I'm just really excited about how solid this camera is compared to all my other cameras. I'm definitely going to be replacing the other cameras with this model in the future.
