Celestron - NexStar 6SE Telescope - Computerized Telescope for Beginners and Advanced Users - Fully-Automated GoTo Mount - SkyAlign Technology - 40,000 Plus Celestial Objects - 6-Inch Primary MirrorI am a newb. I bought this out of an abundance of reviews/research before buying. The usage of this telescope is mainly viewing through a scope with my kids. My kids have gotten enthralled with the stars and planets and came to the limits of star gazing via basic phone app maps and looking up at the sky with bare eyes at night, identifying the constellations etc etc. After a year of that -- i felt it was a good time to get them to the next level --- a telescope is the next step. This review is from a total nonexpert newb with the attitude of "i'm doing this for my kids" point of view. After having the 4" version and 6" version in my cart for a while, i finally I purchased a 6SE version because of a nice "warehouse" deal here that made it cost effective compared to a new 4se. Aside CSB: My kids pitched in some of their birthday money to help pay for this --- got them invested into this hobby if anything.Despite watching you-tube vids of "Setup" and reviews, i was still a bit overwhelmed -- keep in mind, i'm a total newb here. My main hobbies are photography / musician -- i'm fairly tech-savvy as well. The unit does come with a "quick setup" poster as well as a fairly mundane manual that assumes a bit too much fore-knowledge imo. In terms of physical setup though, all i needed was a that quick setup poster.... it also helped i saw a tonne of setup videos online as well. Putting it together was pretty easy. The part I was overwhelmed with is actually going outside and aligning/calibrating for first time.Calibration/Alignment:I was overwhelmed a bit tbh! It also doesnt help that it had to be done at night time, in a dark area with some flashlights. Also though at the time of setup it was "spring" , it was still around 1-5c so a bit chilly. With that environment, i felt a bit frustrated already, dealing with this complex setup in that environment. I did everything i could inside (setup, reading manual, etc). Setting this up AS IS without ANY other addon's is a mess. Fiddling with GPS coordinates, UTC time entry, FRUSTRATING first-time star alignment, actually finding a star with a finder and trying to get that into your eyepiece view.... This process for anyone who's never had any experience with a telescope, is daunting. The biggest annoyance for me was not knowing if the focus was in line to actually see anything in the first place, since i have no frame of reference to where in the "focus dial" i should approximate to be able to see anything -- should it be infinity? or what... all i see was black space with this telescope; keep in mind, i DID trial this Indoors and managed to get stuff into focus inside to get used to how the focusing work. Doing this at the sky, where most of it is black darkness-- is HARD. Randomly i dialed around looking around in eyepiece with approximation of the red dot finder... and found a "blob" that isnt just black space.... then i dialed around focus knob until it was a big huge circle with a black dot --> this isnt the star...... you have to dial focus BACK until the star actually is in focus (wherein, the star looks like a small spec of light...) --- then finally i saw Capella and some neighboring stars with the given 25mm eyepiece..... That was brutal. Once you finally get this thing setup, the "goto" was working OK and we were able to locate and view stars and the cluster of stars on a clear sky day. Quite impressive the tech once you get over the setup.I was NOT satisfied with this kit alone. It was really frustrating for me to fiddle a round with the hand set telephone controller, get this alignment done and mess around for a while until then the kids are bored. I bought this not because i wanted to become some kind of enthusiast hobby astronomy observer. I simply wanted this to give my kids next level of star gazing enjoyment. It's NOT easy for my 11yo to just "set it up and do it on her own". No way.Enter add-ons:After a few outings i decided to "upgrade" a bit. I went a bit overboard here. I bought starsense autoalign, celestron focus motor upgrade, wifi upgrade and the standalone gps. All of these were found locally , used, so it was quite cost effective -- buying these new is actually quite cost inhibitive. I DID have to buy a third party 4-1 aux splitter here on amazon to power and control these celestron addons. The 6SE only has a single AUX port. I also bought the A/C adapter and a portable power bank to plug into. Also bought dew shield which i needed in my climate.Order of usefulness of add-ons:1. A/C adapter is a MUST. i roll my eyes here that it was not included WITH the telescope. Burning through AA batteries is just not ideal at all... especially if your climate is cooler.2. I'm not a fan of dragging around extension cables to the yard where we are observing, I bought a small 80$ power bank plug to plug the a/c adapter into.... this is a MUST. I can also use this power bank when i'm throwing the scope in the trunk and going to a less light polluted area. Using AA x8 batteries is just not great but i'm glad the option exists in a pinch3. WIFI adapter -- this unlocks your ability to use phone app to 1) put your gps coord and utc time automatically via your phone's gps so you dont have to enter it in every time. 2) unlocks ability to perform starsense autoalign via a more intuitive interface 3) unlocks ability to "goto" stars via a nice star gazing celestron app... makes it a lot more visual and quick, as opposed to scrolling thru old school telephone handset interface. I had some issues with this connectivity though -- uses direct wifi to phone and often would disconnect from phone. Had to reset things often. Eventually i ended up "forgetting" my existing wifi connections, and only allowing this celestron accesspoint to work... had more stability doing that. Ultimately though, i brought out a laptop and used celestron's software instead of phone app --- used my laptop to connect to the wifi adapter SSID and the windows pc app was much more convenient to use, and much more solid connection without any drop outs. (bigger screen was nice too). You DO have the option to connect the telescope via USB hard wired to a laptop too -- this was 100% stable but inconvenient because of the long usb cable connected to the handset and you run into cordwrap issues. This is an inexpensive option and i think is a must have. Frankly? this should have been built-into the telescope OR at minimum , imo, celestron shouldve included this adapter at this price point.4. Starsense autoalign -- this made everything "simple" This was the add-on that really really worthy of this telescope being called "plug and play". I found that with this accessory, although pricey, just lets my kid "let the computer do its job to align" and then "goto" any star/planet and simply ENJOY. The initial setup was a bit tricky for me but after calibrating camera to scope, subsequent power ups was a matter of 3 minutes..... It doesnt setup things "dead on" all the time but close enough that you can see stars in view and move around to pinpoint. If your use case is like me, i highly recommend costing this out in your budget if youre about to buy a celestron SCT. I think "advanced" users likely scoff at this accessory but perhaps that really isnt the customer base for this option. For newbs though? i love it! I would say not TOTALLY mandatory but I heavily recommend it. With this option , my 11yo can go out and get going in 5 minutes.5. Dew shield. Celestron sells a dew shield for specifically this scope. Its just a wrapper with velcro. IT prevents dew in the air from settling onto the scope glass, assuming youre not observing straight up all the time lol. Depending on your climant you may find that you need this. There are third party stuff you can buy and obviously this is easy to DIY one yourself as well. So i wouldnt call this a must-have because it totally depends on your climate situation. I bought it because i was using my scope in the cold. Dew heaters also exist but then youre talking about additional spending on a controller etc etc...6. Celestron focus motor. I wasnt going to get this at all. the "manual dial" works OK. I wouldnt call this a mandatory upgrade especially if youre just star gazing. It's super easy to "dial in" your focus with the basic knob. I will say that when focusing, the unit shakes so it gets tricky to dial in the focus since the image is moving around. In any case, i ended up finding a focus motor used.... tried it anyway. Install is a bit tricky to get the right tension otherwise things snag. You DO lose the ability to manual focus though, and so require the telescope to be ON, and use the handset OR the app OR the laptop program to dial in the focus. Gives you ability to dial focus at 3 levels of speed -- 1, being VERY slow moving for most accurate focusing, and 3 being fastest. If youre going to get into some entry level photography, i think you will eventually buy this. Getting into photography puts you in another ballgame of accessories and learning and software.... beware.7. Celestron GPS. This is the least useful upgrade. Its expensive and only for people who refuse to use wifi adapter and connect to phone.. The nice thing though is, it acquires gps fix pretty darn fast, faster than your phone connecting to the wifi adapter. So when you turn on the telescope, it will already set coordinates and time before you get into app. Its a "nice to have" but not necessary at all imo. If youre barebones , no phone, no laptop, just scope, then perhaps this will be really handy to get that fix in right away without fiddling with handset manual entry.------------OK so after rigging the scope up to the max .. The telescope is finally something "easy to use". I would honestly say the add-ons above, 1-4, really let my kids and i, enjoy star gazing quick and easy. options 5+7 above, are "nice to haves" depending on your situation. My opinion, the MINIMUM recommended upgrades though, is 1-3 which are not that costly but give you a wayyyy easier first experience. After going out a few weeks now we realised we need more magnification. The scope comes with a basic 25mm eyepiece -- its actually a decent starter piece but ones you get the hang of things, you will definitely want to get a more powerful scope to see things closer (moon/planets). Whatever you do, I highly recommend finding eyepieces with a generous 20mm++ eye relief (a must if you wear glasses but also for non glasses wearers, it just makes viewing easier). That should be your priority. We ended up with an 8mm and a 32mm.... I think we need to play around with this a bit more before we invest in more pieces. Also using 1.25" filters to help increase contrast --- but that stuff comes later after we have a bit more experience. The tripod that comes with this scope is ROCK solid. I've heard folks complain about it with 8se users but with a 6se scope, i think its perfect. Once leveled, i found zero issues keeping this 6se balanced and stable even with all the addons.Carrying this around the car and getting things setup is easy but i think I should buy a padded bag soon. IS it heavy? for an adult its OK.. but it isnt "light". My 11 yo cannot carry this thing fully setup though. In the house i keep it all setup at the door next to the backyard and i have to help bring stuff outside. But for travel, when you disassemble things, individual pieces are light.I really enjoy using this scope now and would love to give it full 5 stars but i will not. It is definitely a fantastic "beginner" telescope, and surely the GOTO system is awesome once configured/aligned -- but I felt like it needed a bit more newb friendly instructions standalone WITHOUT any add-ons. As a beginner, i felt it also should have come with AC adapter and WIFI adapter WITH the kit at this price point. This would have really helped a newb A LOT and i think would have allowed me to give it full 5 stars. I do understand why the starsense option is pricey and optional but in my opinion, if youre like me, with kids, and want to really remove the fuss of setup, i recommend adding this to your budget. It truly is awesome tech.Last point i will mention... as i mentioned i was in the market for 4" or 6" version of this telescope. After experiencing the light gathering ability of this 6", I actually cant imagine enjoying the skies with a smaller telescope with less light gathering capability. So i'm glad to have gotten 6se instead of 4se.This is hopefully useful and helpful feedback for people in my situation. This wasnt meant to be a technical review (lots of videos out there already). Bottom line is, if you are getting into this star gazing business, be prepared to budget in a bit more money to get useful upgrades mentioned above, and eyepieces.clear skies!(note: I didnt add many pictures since there are many out there already but the picture i did share, was with starsense and wifi options installed)

This is my second scope. The first was a Bushnell 4.5 inch reflector of disputable quality. The mirror was good, but I had to replace the flimzy tripod and get better eyepieces to even attempt to see anything clearly. This telescope is superior a hundred fold . The image of jupiter, for instance, is crisp and clear with the included 25mm eyepiece, Seeing hasn't been very good here, in Quebec City, these last few days, but I was able to observe the king of planets with a 10mm eyepiece and enjoy details impossible to discern with my old reflector. Allignement of the go to is relatively simple. The hand controller has a red backlight to preserve night vision. However, with the backlight on during allignement, the scrolling of instructions on the hand controller display is unreadable. Tracking is good, but I have noticed that occasionaly, the scope seems to loose track of the object, which makes it necessary to use the hand controller to bring things back on track.
One of the reasons I purchased this scope was because it can be easily transported and assembled. The tube need not be removed from the mount. It can be rotated vertically to align with the mount arm into a neat compact package easily storable in my OTA bag. The tripod is also compact and light. Contrary to other comments, I find the tripod and mount well built and sturdy enough for the nexstar. A question of opinion, I suppose.
I purchased the 18774 power tank with this scope, which I think is essential. The tracking motor will eat through the required AA batteries in no time. I also burchased the AC adapter.
There is only one 25mm eyepiece included with the scope. The purchase of a few more of different magnification, a barlow and a few filters such as a lunar filter is a good idea. However, the nexstar is highly usable with the included accessory.
There are many resources on the web which are helpful in the use of this SCT. Michael Swanson's Nexstar site, for one, has a lot of good info, although some of it seems outdated. Youtube is also a good source of valuable information.
Included in the box: Scope and tripod (obviously) , tripod accessory tray, level for the tripod, 25mm eyepiece, 1.25 inch Star diagonal, Starpointer finderscope, The Sky Level 1 Astronomy Software, NexRemote telescope control software, RS232 Cable (you'll need an RS232 to USB adapter for newer computers)
The good:
Crisp image
Easy assembly
Easily transportable and storable
Sturdy enough tripod
Easy alignement with the hand controller
The Bad:
Scrolling text on the hand controller is unreadable when backlight is on.
Tracking sometimes lost.

To conclude, I have so far no regrets with my purchase. And although I have only a few hours of observations with the scope, I am quite satisfied. With mars and saturn soon to be in opposition, I believe the next few weeks will bring loads of astronomical fun.

***After a couple months of use, I thought it would be a good idea to share my experience with this scope. I had mentionned in my initial review that the scrolling text on the hand controller (HC) was unreadable at night, with the red backlight on. As I navigated through the numerous menus on the HC, I realized that I could set the speed of the scrolling, which pretty well solved that problem. So scratch that from the "Bad".
The gears in this scope produce some backlash. This problem is well documented on the web and must be taken into consideration when attempting to do a proper star alignement and expect the scope to center on planets. Without some ajustements in the settings of the HC, planets will never align properly in your eye piece once the star alignement has been performed. I've found some very helpful astronomy forums with valuable info regarding different settings to minimize the impact of this backlash. I've added a spotting scope which makes the optical tube back heavy. I had no idea that this could have an impact on the the alignement, but it does. Call that a newb's mistake, I suppose . All in all, my experience with this telescopes has greatly improved with the knowledge collected on the web. So, the second point on my "bad" list still applies, but it can be remedied. My allignements are still not perfect. I still have to test some settings, but I'm getting very close. It's only a matter of time.
But all this does not minimize the fact that this great telescope has enabled me to observe the marvels of our solar system and beyond with a clarity that truly amazes me. It's easy to set up, light and transportable. A great buy for a beginner like myself, and certainly for more experienced amateur astronomers. And worthy of its fifth star.
(PS. The celestron GPS for this scope is a very helpful addition, by the way.)

From ordering and shipping process to delivery, unpacking and first use, everything was seamless. The scope arrived in one single big box, not so heavy, that contains several box, one for each component: OTA, motorized base, tripod and accessories. All the parts were properly packed and in perfect condition. I'm impressed by the clarity of the provided 25mm plossl eyepiece. As soon as the day started to dim, 6:30pm or so, I aimed the scope at that beautiful bright star named Jupiter :-) and there it was in all its majesty, that impressive disk of colored stripes and its 4 moons against the still bluish darkening sky behind. I thought that Jupiter would be much smaller given the 25mm but it was big enough to observe its features. And the seeing was not that great that evening. So I can't imagine what it will be with the Baader Hyperion 8to24mm zoom on the way and 4/5 - 5/5 seeing conditions. Saturn was pretty nice to look at too. Everything is so clear. My first test was to look at tree leaves a 100 meters away and, wow, the clarity of details is just outstanding. I strongly recommend to order the Skyportal wifi module, a 12v power supply and maybe a variable polarizing 1-40% filter in order to start fully enjoying the possibilities of this system. Running the scope from AA batteries is just a non-sense. This Nexstar scope system would have been perfect if the battery compartment was made for Li-Ion 18650 batteries. But I guess this is the trade-off to get such a high quality system for less than 2K$. Fortunately I had a 12V 3amp external harddrive power supply in my warehouse that happened to have the right 5mm plug. So I could use that instead of ordering the 40$ power supply from Celestron. A piece of advice, especially to beginners, and I can't stress it enough: be extra vigilant when installing the tube's (OTA) rail into the clamp of the motorized base in order to avoid the tube from falling on the ground. Make sure that the locking nut is properly tightened and that there's no wiggling. There's no security feature/blocking device on the arm's attachment mechanism nor the tube's rail to impede an eventual fall of the tube if it is not properly secured. The tube's rail can easily slip off the clamp if it is not tighten strongly enough. That is a little flaw from the mount design. There should have been some sort of blocking mechanism on the rail in order to avoid the tube from sliding down. When I installed the tube I made sure that the arm's clamp was horizontal and the tightening nut pointing down. Don't turn the clamp manually, use the hand controller to rotate on altitude axis. The kit comes with the clamp oriented vertically. Some will rotate it by hand but I do not recommend it since it puts stress on the gear clutch and cause wear and slack. You then use your 2 arms to maintain the OTA and tighten the clamp. Don't let go until it is 100% secure. Triple check your installation before starting your astronomy journey, otherwise it might start on a very bad note! If you want the perfect astronomy companion at a reasonable price, look no further, the 8SE is the perfect choice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic fist telescope. If you want to begin with astronomy, this is a great way to start.

The Celestron NexStar 6 SE is an incredible first telescope. I wanted to avoid cheaper scopes and get something that will last a lifetime. This is it. The optics are very good, nice crisp images. The motorized GoTo mount is fantastic for beginners as it makes it very easy for you to find objects quickly and enjoy observing without needing to find them yourself, and it tracks the objects as they move across the sky so you don't need to. It's not difficult to use at all as long as you read the manual and follow the on-screen prompts to align the scope, and once it is aligned, you're off to the races. I've seen absolutely stunning views of the Orion Nebula through this, even in my light polluted city back yard. It can be used anywhere, even in a city - you'll still see a great deal of objects like the planets, moon, star clusters, double stars, and bright nebulae, even a galaxy or two, like Andromeda. Outside of a city, in a real dark site, this scope will reveal so much. I found Neptune, very hard to see, on my second night with the scope. Truly stunning.

A few notes: get a power bank to power the telescope. The AA batteries do not last long. I only keep the batteries in to move the scope back into storage position after it has dried out (it will collect dew) and come to room temperature inside. I recommend the Celestron power banks, despite the price, because they are made for this. Get a dew shield (the Celestron portable roll-up shield is just fine) because SCT scopes are dew magnets, you will need it. And get a couple more eyepieces - the 25mm that's included is okay, but if you want to see more, I recommend getting a 32mm plossl and an 8-24mm Celestron zoom lens. Both are reasonably priced and will open up what you can see in this scope. Zoom lenses are especially great for beginners to "dial in" the right magnification and get the best views. The included star finder is alright, a little cheap, but it doesn't matter as long as you align it properly. You only need it for a few minutes to do the initial alignment for GoTo, then you shut it off for the rest of the night, so it's really not worth the cost of replacement. A couple of filters can help too - Orion Ultrablock for looking at nebulae, and some inexpensive color filters may help with bringing out details with the moon and planets.

Regarding shipping: I suspect this package was mishandled at some point by Amazon. Not long after receiving it, the altitude motor started making strange sounds, and the focuser knob (not the focuser itself) was slightly bent, so I suspect it was dropped. The box even showed a little damage, the visual back of the scope was likely pushed into the cardboard. But Celestron took care of fixing it quickly, for free under warranty, and now it's perfectly fine.

For beginners considering a more "serious" telescope that 1) is easy to use, 2) will last a very long time, and 3) is portable to travel to dark sites or do quick observing sessions in your back yard, this is a great one to start with. It's portable enough (with a carrying case) to take almost anywhere, and not too heavy. It's a quick setup and if you're following the instructions, it aligns quickly. The hand controller is intuitive and very easy to use as it guides you through every step. If you want more feedback on this scope, check out the Cloudy Nights forum where you can read reviews and first-hand experiences of using it, along with common FAQ.

Highly recommend this telescope. Inspect it when you get it to make sure there are no problems regarding mishandling during shipping. Otherwise, I love it, it really opened my mind to the wonders of amateur astronomy, got me started with a powerful yet easy-to-use telescope, and gave me a great hobby to get outside and enjoy the beauty of the night sky. Just be sure to use it on good, clear, calm nights for stargazing and you'll get the most out of it.

This is a good product. But it came with 25mm eye piece and you have to purchase alot of additional stuff to view or gaze. It should have at least two eye pieces like 25 and atleast 9mm with it. And there is no tutorial to teach you how to do it. It may become frustrating for customer company should provide easy installation help one time to customer or easy guide video which shows what a each thing is doing like allignment process is very kinda of seems hard. But it's a overall good product not to mention the seller is amazing I would suggest go for 6se or 8se is best of right budget 127slt is better than 4se

Yes it’s a brilliant product but it needs a lot of dedication to set it up and running. Telescopy is way more complicated and expensive than I anticipated. I finally got there after 3 months. I can now control the telescope with my laptop and make it swivel to the moon and Jupiter and the Pleiades. I got beautiful haunting images. But I’m still struggling to master the camera.
On top of this telescope I have spent £300 on the Celestron eyepiece camera, £300 on a padded carrying case for the telescope, £90 for a case for the tripod. Because I need to transport the telescope to a dark sky location 40 miles away. I also had to purchase various usb cables and batteries. The manual is very hard to follow and there are many YouTube tutorials to watch. On top of that we have had the cloudiest 4 months in UK history, and I can only work this on the rare clear nights. That’s why it takes me so long to learn this.
